Former assistant chief takes over Fire Department JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — “Ever since I started in the fire service at 20 years old — which is frightening — I’ve wanted to be the fire chief,” said Chris Coons, whose dream cam true this month when he was promoted to Johns Creek Fire Chief. Coons has served in Johns Creek’s Fire Department since 2008 and as assistant fire chief since 2012. He brings more than 26 years of professional experience to the position. “Many times when you go through a search for a leader it is assumed that the inside person gets the job,” Mayor Mike Bodker said. “That was not the case. Chief Coons was among some very,
very, very qualified finalists, but the decision was overwhelming.” Coons has served as the department’s interim fire chief since January 2019, when former chief Jeff Hogan was appointed State Fire Marshal. “The people who I answer to are the people who live, work, play, visit the city of Johns Creek,” Coons said. “Our performance is key to their safety, and as long as they’re happy, I’m happy. We will do the best we can do to serve the citizens here, especially from here on out.” — Carson Cook
