Don’t watch your weight! It’s that time of year again. “Lose weight now” messages from the $60 BILLION diet industry are everywhere! This diet industry thrives because none of their products works for more than a few weeks. The entire industry is a wash, rinse, repeat--endlessly-profit center. But the biggest problem is that weight is the wrong thing to change and the wrong thing to want to lose! Instead, we should be changing Body Composition. Body Composition is the sum of 2 things: the amount of your Body Fat + the amount of Lean Body Mass (muscle, tissue, bones, skin, everything else). To best explain the distinction, let’s look at two people, both 5 foot 10 inches tall, both weighing 200 lbs. Imagine what they each look like with this Body Composition: Person 1: 22% Body Fat + 78% LBM (44lbs fat + 156lbs LBM)
Person 2: 44% Body Fat + 56% LBM (88lbs fat + 112lbs LBM) Not only do they look different, but also, their endocrine systems will be very different. Person 2 will be at much higher risk for Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease, cancer, depression, asthma, migraines, gout, degenerative joint disease--and just won’t feel good. Person 2 will suffer with low energy, headaches, bad knees or back or both, and poor sleep quality. What if by using the correct eating and exercise program, Person 2 changed his/her body composition to 34% Body Fat + 66% lean mass (down to 68lbs fat + 132lbs LBM) but still weighed 200 lbs? The result would be improved health, increased strength and endurance, a longer life expectancy—and a drop of at least 2 clothing sizes! Person 2 could keep on the program until the
correct composition is reached—and that doesn’t come from an insurance table compiled in the 1950s, like the weight/age numbers everyone thinks of as targets. The goal is an individual ratio, determined by your own body.
What can you do this Diet Season? Stop watching your weight! Worry about how much body fat you’re carrying instead. And give us a call at CoreMatters (404) 435-6367. Changing Body Composition is what we do!

Finding the right mix of “peace of mind” and economic value for the services rendered to a frail loved one can be a difficult situation. January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month With the new year upon us, and resolutions made, it is a wonderful time to talk about cervical cancer prevention. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 13,000 new cases of cervical cancer are expected to be diagnosed this year. While much less common than breast cancer, it still affects a significant number of women. In the past, cervical cancer was one of the most common causes of cancer death in women. Thankfully, over the last half-century, the death rate from cervical cancer has decreased signifi-

cantly due to improved screening and detection methods. Today, most of the cases of cervical cancer are seen in women who have not had routine Pap smears. The Pap smear is able to detect abnorstegall mal cells, making it an essential part of any woman’s preventative health plan. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, women
ages 21-29 should have a Pap smear every 3 years. Women ages 30-65 should have a Pap smear every 5 years along with testing for Human Papillomavirus (HPV). I highly encourage women to have regular appointments with their OBGYN for the appropriate cervical cancer screening tests, as it is one of the easiest cancers to prevent but one of the most difficult to treat once it occurs. Improve your sleep and watch your life get better (NAPSI)—Here’s eye-opening news: One simple lifestyle change can improve your cognitive functioning; decrease anxiety, depression, anger and irritability; and even improve your libido! Just one change and you’ll have more energy, be more productive and likely improve the quality of your personal relationships. You could even improve your immune system and decrease your risk for weight gain, obesity, diabetes and heart disease, doctor visits and hospitalizations, leading to lower medical bills. Seem like a lot of work? Relax! The way to get all these benefits is simple. You just need to get more sleep. For many Americans, that may seem easier said than done. Richard Shane, Ph.D., developer of the Sleep Easily All-in-One Sleep Kit, notes that behavior changes known as sleep hygiene can help. For occasional or moderate sleep problems, try these steps first: First, follow a regular sleep schedule. That helps regulate your body clock so you can sleep. Next, try to avoid stimulating substances like caffeine, including chocolate and caffeinated sodas, six hours
before bedtime. Less obvious than caffeine is smoking and alcohol. If you smoke (don’t!), avoid it close to bedtime, since nicotine is also a stimulant. Limit your alcohol consumption to one to two drinks per day or less, and avoid alcohol altogether within three hours of bedtime. When you drink right before bed, the alcohol wears off in the middle of the night, causing you to wake up. Remember to drink enough water during the day, so you’re not very thirsty at bedtime. If you need to drink before bed or in the middle of the night, drink small sips instead of gulping. This way, you won’t have to get up again to use the bathroom, further interrupting your sleep. Give your body several hours to digest your last meal before bed. And during dinner or evening snacks, avoid any spicy foods or foods that can upset your stomach, especially close to bedtime. During the day, try to nap less and exercise more, especially outdoors. Being out in the sunlight for at least 15 minutes a day can help you sleep better that night. Sunlight is especially important during the winter, when days are shorter.
When you do go to bed, keep these tips in mind to optimize your ability to get a good night’s sleep. • Make sure your mattress is comfortable and less than eight years old. • Keep the room dark and cool— about 67 degrees is comfortable for most people. Keep computers, TVs and work materials out of your bedroom so you mostly associate the place with sleep. Televisions, computers, cell phones and tablets emit a blue-white light that interferes with your brain’s production of the sleep hormone melatonin. Stop using them half an hour or so before bed, wherever you keep them.
• Instead, slow down an hour before bed with a bath, a relaxing read or a little stretching to ease yourself into rest. • Dimmer switches can help, too, to keep your house lights soft and low in the evening. Worth the effort? Of course! One study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that car crashes resulting in injuries were 1.9 times more likely if the driver missed two hours of sleep! Acne affects all ages By May River Dermatology So, you’re well past your teen years but the face in the mirror with its red angry skin eruptions says otherwise. What do you do when you’re experiencing adult acne? Although not a welcome sight, acne is a pretty common occurrence during times of hormonal imbalance, which in adolescence is expected but as adults can often come as an unwelcome surprise. According to Bonaccorsi, hormonal and genetic factors can contribute to the development of acne. “Mild acne can be easily controlled with cosmeceuticals, or over-the-counter medication,” she said. “However, more severe acne or acne that does not respond to common first-line treatments needs to be addressed by a dermatologist. “There are aggressive forms of acne that can be very disfiguring and leave permanent scarring,” said Bonaccorsi. “Fortunately we have great medications that, if started in a timely fashion, can cure these patients and prevent longterm damage.” In adults, hormonal imbalance may just be a matter of milestones–preg-
nancy or menopause for example in women; or increased stressors, which can disrupt the endocrine system in both men and women. “In my experience, each acne patient is different and requires a personalized approach,” Bonaccorsi said. Beyond treating acne for the health of the skin, Bonaccorsi also refers to its potential negative social repercussions. “Acne can also affect a person’s self esteem. And, especially in teenagers, can lead to depression and self-image issues.” Visiting your dermatologist early can help you, or your child, lessen further skin damage or social anxiety, and with a medical professional’s guidance on best treatment and home care options, help keep those unwelcome blemishes at bay. Dr. Paola Bonaccorsi M.D., Ph.D. and the May River Dermatology team provides high-quality, patient-focused medical care and professional cosmetic services to adults and families from their practicelocated at 10680 Medlock Bridge Rd., Suite 204 in Johns Creek. Gaining control over your fitness and your life For many people, aging equals lower metabolism, weight gain and less energy for activities you enjoy. This is directly related to loss of lean muscle. While you can’t avoid getting older, there are some steps you can take to stop the process of muscle loss and start rebuilding healthy, lean muscle. It doesn’t matter how old you are or whether you haven’t exercised in years. You can still regain lean muscle that improves your shape and increases your metabolism. Our downfall is inactivity. Too much sitting is the new smoking. Our bodies were meant to be active, stay active and be strong. When we stop doing meaningful exercise, we lose ground. Al Taylor at age 73 says, “Since my retirement in 1998, I had let myself go. I gained weight and developed arthritis in my hips and knees. I realized that if I didn’t make some significant life style changes my quality of life would be miserable.” “SuperSlow Zone provided me exactly what I was looking for. My objective was to increase core strength, improve balance, and strengthen my skeletal muscle to take stress off my knee and hip joints. As a surprise bonus, every-
one at SuperSlow Zone is extremely well versed in metabolism control and nutrition.” “As a result I’ve taken off more than 35 lbs., my body fat is down 7%, visceral fat down 5% and muscle density up 3.5%. In addition my doctor has taken me off of my blood pressure medication and my blood sugar is now down to normal. Life is good.” What is meaningful exercise? A critical component of stimulating the improvements we seek from exercise is the achievement of momentary muscular failure in each exercise performed. With steady-state activities, like walking on a treadmill or biking, there is no momentary muscular failure involved. Unless activity is demanding, it is practically worthless from an exercise perspective. However, if an activity is sufficiently demanding to take the targeted muscles to momentary failure, then it qualifies as meaningful exercise. Muscle failure should be viewed as a means of signaling the body that it needs to get stronger in order to meet the demands being placed upon it. What is the SuperSlow Zone solution?
“Doctors trust us to care for them and their families.”

A “traditional” philosophy One of your New Year resolutions may be to stay healthy. A healthy mouth leads to a healthy body and overall well-being. What triggers your medical upkeep? Do you have certain times of the year that you plan your routine visits to your family doctor, gynecologist, and dentist? Are you reactive, only seeing a medical professional when you think something is wrong? Or do you keep a regular maintenance schedule for yourself and your family? Hopefully, the latter. It is my philosophy that preventative care is absolutely the most essential way to take charge of your health. I focus on the overall well-being of my patients and, with the help of modern science. I can actually foresee dental issues and circumvent most of them before they become a bigger and more costly problem. Why is this important? Three reasons: Your comfort. Your time. Your money. That’s right. Preventative care is first and foremost, more comfortable for patients. Heading off problems before they begin saves patients from larger more costly
dental procedures such as crowns or root canals. And they take more time in the office to address and fix. While medical techniques allow me to perform these procedures with a higher level of comfort like Sedation Dentistry for my patients, most people would still prefer to avoid them altogether, if possible. With just two visits per year for a typical dental patient, I can keep you in preventative mode over the course of your lifetime. We can head off problems before they start and keep more money in your wallet, increase the overall health of your body and help you spend less time at the dentist. My philosophy is simple: See us on a regular basis to avoid seeing us even more often than you’d like! What system do you have in place for preventative care? Please remember to schedule those routine appointments for you and your family before your body triggers an issue for you that could have been entirely prevented! Call 770-884-7151 to reserve your appointment or visit us on the web at www.HiTechSmiles.com for more information. Most dental benefits reset Jan 1, so don’t wait to use them till the end of the year when it is too late.

A healthy, fun social life doesn’t need to end at the retirement threshold By: Brooke Wall, Sales Manager, Celebration Village There’s no denying that as you age, social interactions can decline. If you're not heading to an office or getting out and about each day, you may be missing out on important social interaction that keep you sharp, healthy, and maybe even ward off looming medical risks or dementia. Research has proven the many benefits that social interaction offers older adults. Staying socially engaged and maintaining interpersonal relationships can help you sustain good physical and emotional health, and cognitive function. By continuing close friendships and finding ways to interact socially helps people—especially older adults—to live longer than those who are isolated. Relationships and social interactions can even help protect against illness by boosting your immune system. There are far too many benefits of being in community with other people than can be listed, but a short list includes reduction in the risk of cardiovascular problems, some cancers, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, high blood pressure and depression. It helps keep your brain from getting rusty, but it's most effective when coupled with an overall healthy lifestyle, including a nutritious diet and physical activity. So rather than shedding family, friends and hobbies as you age—which can hurt our mental and physical health— why not find a retirement community designed to facilitate social connections? A local example of this type of community is Celebration Village, a stateof-the-art, full-service independent living community being built in Forsyth and Acworth. With the foundation built on promoting an upbeat lifestyle, independence, optimism and successful aging for seniors, these communities are definitely worth taking a second glance. The most unique feature is The Celebration Club, the heart of activity and lifestyle that houses all Village services, offerings and amenities in one central location. The club-style amenities with distinctive, innovative design features creates an upscale, inspiring social environment for both their residents and non-residents alike. If you’ve taken a cruise before, you’ll definitely enjoy The Celebration Club’s cruise ship-like epicenter

Whether it’s a cooking class at the Chef’s Corner, a game of billiards or Wii tournament at Frank’s Game Parlor, a watercolor class in the Art Studio or just the stimulating sights, sounds and tastes this central hub will evoke, the social engagement is a proven factor to successful and healthful aging. Every day at Celebration Village will focus on “CELEBRATING LIFE,” allowing residents to remember the life they have been blessed with as well as the life they are living today. Find ways to stay young at heart, stimulated, busy—and out and about in your community because a healthy, fun social life doesn’t need to end at the retirement threshold. Opening in Forsyth County and Acworth Spring 2017, Celebration Village is proud to be built and managed with the founders of Masterpiece Living, and embodies the findings of successful aging to help residents age successfully, and ultimately celebrate living longer, healthier, happier lives. Celebration Village, developed by Active Senior Concepts (ASC) and AgeWell Living, has professionally designed and programmed an extensive variety of environments and services that promote continued physical, intellectual, social and spiritual growth, proven to dramatically slow the inevitable deterioration and depression associated with older age. The entire master-planned village from the resident homes, to the shopping shuttle express buses to the Celebration “Social” Club provides an abundance of positive, upbeat and stimulating environments designed to empower seniors to remain optimistic and in control of their own lives.
