Woman reports extortion via graphic text message ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police were dispatched to Summerwood Lane early Sept. 2 after an immigration worker reportedly received a threatening message. The victim told officers someone sent her the text message from an unknown number threatening to hurt her and her family if she didn’t pay $2,900. The victim told officers she handles several large immigration cases. The suspect claimed to be part of a criminal organization called “MY GIRLS” and claimed they had located the victim and her family. “It will be better if we reach an agreement before things get worse, the

PUBLIC SAFETY agreement is to pay a fine of $2,900,” the text stated. “If you don`t pay the fine, this is what will happen to you and everyone in your family.” The message was accompanied with a graphic picture of an apparent murder victim along with photos of several people posing with rifles.

Police save dog from house fire ROSWELL, Ga. — Police responded to a Sept. 5 structure fire along Tree Ridge Parkway and rescued a dog that was trapped inside the burning home. The residence was smoking by the time police arrived on scene and heard a dog barking inside the house. An officer kicked the front door open and the dog ran out. Firefighters arrived on scene later and worked to extinguish the blaze. The dog was reunited with its owner.

Son sought in murder of parents in Roswell found dead By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The search for a suspect of a double homicide ended Sept. 4, when detectives were notified that Duane Hall had been found dead in the driver’s seat of a stolen vehicle in Henry County. Police had been searching for the 30-year-old man since early August. He was wanted for two counts of murder for allegedly stabbing his parents, Delroy and Murline-Gregory Hall, to death. Police spokesman Tim Lupo said the Toyota Camry stolen from the scene of the murders — believed to have belonged to the victims — was in the woods near a reservoir off Indian Creek Road. The

deceased male inside the vehicle was positively identified as Duane Hall. “At this time, there is no information on Duane Hall’s cause of death,” Lupo said. “However, there is no indication of suspicious activity, and detectives are not searching for any other involved individuals.” On Aug. 2, officers responded to a home on the 1000 block of Barrington Landing Court, where they found Delroy and Murline-Gregory Hall dead in their home. The motive behind the murders is unknown. Fulton County jail records show Duane Hall had previously dealt with Roswell police. Anyone with additional information about this case is asked to contact the

‘Swatting’ far from harmless pranks, police say By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — There have been several “swatting calls” throughout North Atlanta this year, but although local law enforcement say they are still rare, they do not consider them “harmless pranks” and will continue to crack down on them. Swatting is the act of intentionally reporting false emergencies to provoke a Special Weapons and Tactics team response. Locally, officers from the Roswell, Alpharetta and Milton police departments make up the North Fulton SWAT team. And officers from the Johns Creek, Sandy Springs and Dunwoody police departments make up the North Metro SWAT team. Each has approved manpower of approximately 50 members. The SWAT teams are trained to perform high-risk operations that fall outside of the training of other police officers in their respective jurisdictions. Highrisk operations may include hostage rescues, counter-terrorism operations, serving high-risk arrest and search warrants, subduing barricaded subjects and engaging heavily-armed criminals. These officers are often equipped with weapons ranging from handguns to submachine guns or rifles, as well as tools like body armor, helmets, ballistic shields, entry tools, communication equipment and chemical agent protective masks. Milton Police Capt. Charles Barstow said he is not familiar with any swatting incidents ever occurring in his city in at least the past five years. However, all members of the North Fulton SWAT Team, including Milton officers, are on call 24/7, 365 days a year. The North

Police probe series of vehicle break-ins ROSWELL, Ga. — Police investigated at least 10 auto break-ins reported near the Country Club of Roswell on Aug. 31. The thefts reportedly occurred before dawn when suspects broke into vehicles along Fairway Village Drive, Roxburgh

Metro SWAT team works the same way. “If a decision is made to activate the SWAT Team,” Barstow said, “all members are notified of the call and those that are available to respond will indicate so and respond to the location they are requested at.” Recent cases Last month, the Roswell Police Department responded to three false reports at a single home along Old Course Drive. One of those reports was from someone claiming to be there who called 911 and said they heard arguing and gunshots upstairs, but when armed officers arrived, they found nothing wrong. The next day, someone at the same home allegedly called 911 and the Georgia Crisis Line threatening to commit suicide. Again, the report was false. The victims told officers they believed someone was pranking them. As of Sept. 9, no one has been charged for the false reports. Roswell police spokesman Tim Lupo said he does not consider them “pranks.” “Thankfully, these events are rare, [but] they are taken exceedingly seriously because of the threat they pose both to the resident victims and to responding officers,” Lupo said. “We … will continue to investigate and seek prosecution of those involved in these types of incidents.” Lupo said swatting calls are frequently over significant violence or threats and often involve weapons, so when a SWAT team responds accordingly, victims are often scared or confused to see officers swarming their homes. “Not only that, but all of the resources pulled to the address of a swatting call are unable to respond to other emergencies in the city until they can determine Lane and Turner Road. According to police, the thieves ransacked multiple vehicles and stole a designer purse, credit cards, loose change, sunglasses, golf clubs at least $807 in cash and a bottle of bourbon. Several of the vehicles were reportedly unlocked. Officers found some of the stolen items tossed into bushes near the break-ins. One of the victims on Roxburgh Drive had camera footage that showed two suspects rifling through vehicles in his driveway around 4:15 a.m.

what they are actually dealing with,” Lupo said. “This behavior is far from a harmless ‘prank.’” In Alpharetta, police spokesman Jeffrey Ross said officers responded to at least two swatting calls in 2012, 2019 and 2020, and just one in 2018. He said officers are required to respond to SWAT calls just like any other 911 call. “SWAT does their best to acquire any intel on the incident and location prior to responding to see if there’s any previous history of swatting,” Ross said. “If we do respond and it turns out to be a swatting call, we would do our best to determine who the individual was who placed the call and we would be able to take appropriate action once they’re identified.” Dunwoody police spokesman Mark Stevens said he is not aware of any swatting calls that have occurred in the city and is not certain if there have ever been any. Meanwhile, police spokesman Salvador Ortega said he can recall only a few swatting calls in the City of Sandy Springs over the years. “I know we had one a month or two ago where we chased down a vehicle only to find out the occupants had done nothing wrong and the call was the result of a swatting incident,” Ortega said. “We had others that I can remember where we received information that a shooting had taken place inside a residence. We get there, surround it, only to find out the occupants did nothing wrong.” Tracking challenges There is no code in Georgia law for “swatting.” It wasn’t until the 2019 Anti-Swatting Act that the state legislature broadened its definition to include most of the elements of swatting under the charge of false public alarm, meaning the ability

to tally the number of swatting calls will vary from department to department. For example, Barstow said, most agencies in North Fulton have a crime analyst who can delve into their respective departments’ records management system, but because swatting calls are listed as false public alarm, the crime analyst will have to determine if the incident was truly a swatting call or some other violation of creating a false public alarm such as a bomb threat. This is also the case elsewhere such as in Forsyth County, where Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Stacie Miller said it would take 7.5 hours to read through 94 reports from the past five years that coincide with swatting to determine how many are legitimate swatting calls. Swatting is an aggravated misdemeanor in Georgia punishable by up to a year in jail in most cases. If it threatens critical infrastructure or results in someone’s death, the offender(s) could be sentenced to as much as 10 years in prison, according to state law.

Man dies in Roswell crash after laying drag, fleeing By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — A police chase early Sunday morning, Sept. 12, ended with the death of a man after crashing and being ejected from a vehicle in the area of Holcomb Bridge Road and Scott Road. The male’s identity has not been released pending notification of his next of kin. A female involved in the crash was also transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. While Roswell police, in partnership with the Georgia State Patrol, is investigating the fatal crash, it is unclear at this time who was the driver of the vehicle. Police spokesperson Tim Lupo said the Alpharetta Police Department said to lookout for a group of vehicles traveling together and “engaging in reckless driving behavior,” when a Roswell police officer saw them traveling eastbound on Holcomb Bridge Road shortly after midnight. Lupo said the officer allegedly witnessed an Infiniti G37 laying drag at the intersection with Ga. 400. According to Georgia Law, laying drag is when a driver intentionally and unnecessarily causes the vehicle to move in a zigzag or circular course or to gyrate or spin around, creating a danger to persons or property. It is a

misdemeanor in Georgia. When the officer tried to stop the vehicle, Lupo said, it immediately fled from the scene and continued eastbound “at a high rate of speed.” Responding officers located the wrecked vehicle shortly thereafter. Both individuals were transported to the hospital, where the male later died. Lupo said two other individuals were seen exiting the vehicle before getting into another vehicle and fleeing from the scene. The Roswell Police Department contacted Georgia State Patrol and their Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team responded to investigate. Police all over metro Atlanta are attempting to crack down on street racing. Just this month, on Sept. 1, Dekalb County police arrested and charged Mahmood Edwards, 18, of Stone Mountain, with three counts of promoting drag racing and two counts of obstructing streets, according to online jail records. Edwards is suspected of organizing street races and intersection takeovers around metro Atlanta. DeKalb County police also announced Sept. 7 they arrested three men who were laying drag in the North DeKalb Mall parking lot. Ezekiel Gladmon, 26, of Decatur; Eduardo Martinez, 18, of Lawrenceville; and Brandon Smith, 35, also of Lawrenceville, were charged with laying drag and reckless stunt driving, and their vehicles were impounded.

Metro Atlanta YMCA hires Roswell resident with ‘heart for service’ By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Stan Kubis, a Roswell resident since 2013, is one of three new additions to the leadership team at the YMCA of Metro Atlanta. Kubis has been settling into his new role as the organization’s chief technology officer for the past four months. He said he feels honored and privileged for the opportunity to join the Y. “Working in a nonprofit, missiondriven culture has been very good to me and my family, and I look at working at the Y as a way to give back to my community every day,” Kubis said. As the Y’s chief technology officer, Kubis leads the organization’s technology strategy and daily operations. Under his leadership, the technology will continue to innovate and leverage current and new technologies to support the organization and attract, engage and retain members. Kubis previously held IT leadership roles at consumer products and manufacturing companies and served for about six years as senior vice president and chief information officer for the Boys and Girls Club of America. He said what attracted him to the Y was its 2025 Strategic Plan, core values and especially the nonprofit missiondriven culture, which he described as “a feeling you can’t beat.” “I had been watching the Y for a while, and we began a dialog well before the pandemic started,” Kubis said. “So, it was interesting to see how they responded to it by closing some of the branches and distributing food to those in need. It all happened overnight, and I decided then it was a team I wanted to be a part of.” Lauren Koontz, president and CEO of the YMCA of Metro Atlanta, said in a statement Aug. 25 she is excited to wel-

come Kubis to the Y’s leadership team. “Stan has an ambitious vision and a true heart for service,” Koontz said. When he’s not at the Y, Kubis said he’s walking his dog with his wife along the Chattahoochee River. He said his goal is to keep his neighborhoods in the best shape possible, including mind, body and spirit, and making everyone feel like they belong. The YMCA of Metro Atlanta also hired Paul Nguyen as chief financial officer and Marey Wagner as vice president of major giving. Koontz said Nguyen has a proven track record of driving better business outcomes through thoughtful leadership and actionable insights, and Wagner has a dynamic fundraising experience, which will bolster the Y’s work around major giving. “These roles will be instrumental in helping our organization continue to meet the needs of our community,” Koontz said.

Alpharetta to move ahead with local road projects in face of express lane delay By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta officials are watching closely as the Georgia DOT regroups from a setback on its plan to add express lanes along Ga. 400 through North Fulton County. The project, which was scheduled to begin late next year, hit a snag last month when the State Transportation Board rejected the only qualified bid for the work. MW 400 Partners’ proposal came in far higher than the $1.7 billion GDOT had budgeted. GDOT Commissioner Russell McMurry says the project remains active despite the setback. Plans call for two toll lanes in each direction running 16 miles from the North Springs MARTA station in Sandy Springs north to McGinnis Ferry Road in Alpharetta. The project has major ramifications for Alpharetta where two Ga. 400 overpasses will be replaced, and the city will inherit a new interchange where none existed before. Roswell also will be affected. GDOT plans to add an express lanes interchange at Grimes Bridge Road allowing northbound vehicles to exit and southbound vehicles to enter the express lanes. It also will construct a new bridge over Holcomb Bridge Road that could accommodate a future bus rapid transit station. Alpharetta Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard said the city has made no formal moves to postpone or shift priorities on its own set of road projects because of the delay. “Until they announce a new schedule, we don’t

know what to adjust to,” Drinkard said. While most big-ticket transportation projects on tap in Alpharetta were planned long before the express lane initiative kicked off in earnest two years ago, some do have significant tie-ins. In the current 2022 budget, the city has set aside $23 million in transportation sales tax dollars to widen Webb Bridge Road to create wider sidewalks along both sides of the road, adding bike lanes and a roundabout at Webb Bridge Way. The GDOT plans to add a new interchange just north of Webb Bridge Road for exclusive use by Ga. 400 express lane traffic. City officials anticipate the exchange will add to traffic in the area, although neither the state nor the city can predict how much. Alpharetta has two other major transportation initiatives it plans to launch if the transportation sales tax is extended for another five-year term in this November’s referendum vote. The city is estimated to receive $61 million in funding over five years if the ballot measure passes. It’s top-tier projects include: Webb Bridge Road improvements — $13 million: The project focuses on the section of Webb Bridge Road between Morris Road and the Big Creek Greenway and would continue design elements to be constructed to the east that are being funded by the 2016 TSPLOST. Tradewinds Parkway ripple effect — $6.5 million: The project is meant to address possible congestion problems created by the new Tradewinds interchange for express lane travelers. The city plans to construct a series of improvements on North point Parkway, Westside parkway, Morris Road and Webb Bridge Road/

Academy Street. Alpharetta Mayor Jim Gilvin said the city has its own timetables set for its road projects, but the express lane delay is disappointing. ““It’s disappointing that the first round of trying to work out that business model wasn’t successful, but I think when you try something new, especially on a project this large, you’re going to have some challenges along the way,” he said. Everyone involved in the process, he said, understood from the beginning that the Department of Transportation has been working on this for more than a decade, and that this was a business model – a public/private partnership – the agency had never attempted before. “I think GDOT is continuing to try to figure out how they can get this done in a timely manner and in a way that’s respectful of the taxpayers,” Gilvin said.

Alpharetta commemorates lives lost in September 11 attacks BY TIFFANY MORGAN newsroom@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – “Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?” Local radio personality and podcast host Cadillac Jack (real name William Choate) shared these words, originally written by Georgia native and country singer Alan Jackson, in Alpharetta Sept. 11 at the city’s 9/11 memorial service. Produced by the Alpharetta Rotary Club, the service marked the 20th anniversary of the largest foreign terrorist attack on American soil. Dozens of attendees came to the Town Green to honor the lives lost and Alpharetta first responders. Jack served as the emcee of the event which featured remarks from Alpharetta City Councilman John Hipes and Director of Public Safety John Robison. In the days following the 9/11 attacks, Jack said, the true American spirit was revealed. “As the workers untangled the debris, the American people went through a process of untangling the answers to challenging questions about

how we would respond as a nation,” Jack said. “We had lost a little bit of our innocence but what we discovered is we were still capable of being a united nation.” Jack led the assembled crowd in recognizing the daily efforts of Alpharetta first responders. “Of all the sacrifices that we acknowledge, let us never forget the selflessness reflected in the oath that is taken by our firefighters and our police officers,” Jack said. During his remarks, Robison talked about firefighter Capt. Patrick Brown who was in the North Tower that day, climbing up to the 35th floor. Robison said that as others were fleeing, Brown continued to climb up, saving lives along the way. “It’s a perfect example of that old adage that when there’s chaos and destruction and evil as we saw that day, people run away from that,” Robison said. “And yet, first responders run toward it.” Jack concluded by reminding attendees of their shared promise. “Remember, 20 years ago you said you’d never forget,” Jack said.

The company’s move into the hospitality sector is a return to its roots. NORMAN RADOW, CEO of RADCO 8 | Alpharetta-Roswell Herald | September 16, 2021

Upgrades coming to Roswell DoubleTree after $13 million acquisition By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — An Atlanta real estate investment company has purchased the DoubleTree by Hilton Atlanta Roswell hotel for $13.75 million. RADCO Companies is planning to modernize and upgrade the hotel for an additional cost of about $6.25 million. These plans will largely focus on the hotel’s guestrooms and guest bathrooms, common areas, mechanicals and technology. The property, located on Holcomb Bridge Road, is currently the only full-service hotel between the Perimeter and Alpharetta. It was constructed in 1985 and sits in a prime location adjacent to Ga. 400. The DoubleTree by Hilton Atlanta Roswell hotel consists of 76 double-double and 98 king rooms, more than 7,800 square feet of meeting space, a full-service restaurant and bar, fitness center, mini market and outdoor pool. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospitality sector, in general, saw a major decline, resulting in drastically reduced occupancy and average daily rates. In response, RADCO launched a hotel division in early 2021. The deal is the division’s first acquisition. Andy Williams, executive director of the Roswell Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, said although the acquisition is interesting, it is not unexpected, as RADCO

is taking advantage of an opportunity to add an asset to their portfolio. “Investment in hotel product that elevates the guest experience, whether in exterior aesthetics, interior spaces, meeting spaces or onsite amenities, is generally going to net a positive result and create a higher demand for that property,” Williams said. Should RADCO move forward with its plans to invest in improvements to the hotel, Williams said, it would only make it better. “Since our destination attracts leisure travelers, business travelers, weddings and other types of group business, we would expect this to have a positive impact on our community and the transient business we are able to attract to the city,” Williams said. The Ga. 400 corridor is growing rapidly. It is home to major employers such as State Farm, Mercedes-Benz, UPS, Kimberly Clark, Verizon and more than 700 tech companies based in Alpharetta. Norman Radow, CEO of RADCO, said the company’s move into the hospitality sector is a return to its roots. “We seek to invest in assets with a compelling acquisition story, and RADCO’s purchase of the DoubleTree by Hilton in suburban Atlanta employs all of RADCO’s investment criteria, representing an attractive opportunity in an excellent location,” Radow said. On Aug. 23, the Roswell City Council approved site plan changes to allow for the city’s first boutique hotel in

historic downtown to move forward. The project has been in the works for about five years and is estimated to be a $90 million investment for Roswell. The developer, West Alley LLC, expects to begin construction of the boutique hotel in 2022 or 2023. Once built, the boutique hotel and DoubleTree by Hilton Atlanta Roswell hotel will sit less than three miles apart from each other.

Fourth grade student featured for basketball talents BY ADAM DARBY adam@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — It takes years for many athletes have their talents celebrated publicly. But for 9-yearold Jackson Phoenix, that is already checked off his list. The Manning Oaks Elementary student received the opportunity to put his skills to the test for a halftime performance at a Pro Am basketball game for the Atlanta Entertainment Basketball League (AEBL). “I am happy that Jackson has found something he is good at and enjoys at such an early age,” said Julius Teal, his father. “I am in support of whatever he chooses to do that will keep him mentally, physically, and spiritually fit.” At age 6, Phoenix developed an interest in “any sport requiring a ball” with an emphasis on basketball. When his family moved to Alpharetta, he began working on his game with his father five days a week. Once the schedule became too much for him, Teal enrolled him into a youth basketball league and an individualized training program at the YMCA. It was there where he worked with a professional coach along with his father. “I’ve played sports collegiately [local] and professionally in Europe,” Julius Teal

said. “So, he has heard many stories from other family members and friends as well as seen photos and videos, or what he was able to find in old cardboard boxes, since he has been able to comprehend them.” As Jackson’s skills gradually improved, his father placed him into a NIKE basketball camp as one of the youngest players among more than 70 campers. He was then brought over to the AEBL youth camp. It was there, one of the coaches suggested that he perform with the team for the halftime performance. The crowd cheered him on during the show, and he was posted on the AEBL’s Instagram page for his plays. While performing, he caught the attention of NBA Legend Isaiah Thomas with whom he received a photo opportunity. After years of working diligently with his father and coaches, it seems his efforts paid off. “In guiding Jackson in his athletic endeavors, my involvement is to make sure he is thankful for the opportunity to attend camps, personal trainings, etc., and to provide age-appropriate athletic opportunities where he can thrive,” Julius said. Jackson is continuing his efforts on the court playing in after-school programs and summer camps. To view photos from his performance, view his posts on AEBL’s Instagram page at #jraeblhoops.

Alpharetta, Milton residents to save on football registration fees By CHAMIAN CRUZ chamian@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — Residents in Alpharetta and Milton will no longer have to pay non-resident fees to play youth football at each other’s parks, effective this season. The Milton City Council approved a memorandum of understanding Sept. 8 with the City of Alpharetta to waive non-resident fees associated with football programming. Milton Parks and Recreation Manager Tom McKIveen said he approached the Milton City Council in May with a memorandum of understanding that included football, softball and therapeutic recreation camps, but at that time he had not presented it to Alpharetta. Then in June and July, both cities applied the agreement only to special needs summer camps — Milton’s City Joyful Soles and Alpharetta’s Camp Happy Hearts. They have not applied it to youth softball. More than two years ago, the cities split on their original parks agreement that waived all nonresident fees in a reciprocal arrangement. Since then, Alpharetta youth who are registered to play in Milton are charged a non-resident fee and vice versa despite both cities using the same football provider — North Atlanta Football League. With this new agreement, all players will be considered “residents” regardless of where they play, allowing the North Atlanta Football League to operate

FILE PHOTO

more seamlessly and at a higher quality, McKIveen said. But the change does have a minimal fiscal impact on the City of Milton.

McKIveen said 32 Alpharetta residents registered to play in Milton in 2020, meaning the City of Milton collected $2,880 in non-resident fees. The city will now lose out on those fees collected.

SCHOOLS

Innovation Academy welcomes students to new campus By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. —After nearly a decade, five superintendents, a recession and a pandemic, the area’s first STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) high school opened its doors to students in August. Fulton County Schools’ Innovation Academy hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony Aug. 31 attended by local dignitaries and school officials who gathered at the campus in downtown Alpharetta. The magnet high school opened with a full enrollment of 900 students in grades 9 through 11, selected by a lottery from students across the North Fulton region. Next year the school will have all four grades. A similar STEM high school also opened in August serving students in the South Fulton region. Fulton Schools’ Innovation Academy is located on the site of the original Milton High School, which stood for nearly 80 years. Only the athletic fields remain from the original campus after it was rebuilt in 2005 on a new site in Milton. Principal Tim Duncan said the process from drawing board to opening bell was worth the wait for the new school.

“Based on the feedback, our prework and research paid off as the students all showed up and had an amazing first week,” Duncan said. “Beyond just entering a new environment with new concepts, our students had to adjust to all new friends.” He noted the transition during the first week was made easier with many collaborative activities, such as a design-thinking potable water project and the first IA Olympics that helped accelerate the bonding process of students. Closer bonding may have to wait a little while, as the school opened in the midst of a resurging COVID-19 pandemic. Duncan said the school has had a very low rate of positive COVID cases in the first month. He attributed that to good adherence to safety protocols like washing hands and wearing face coverings. “Every day I say, ‘stay apart to stay together,’” Duncan said. “They seem to all really want to be at school, so they are willing to make these small sacrifices to be with their friends in face-toface learning. He said he wants to focus energy on relationship building and establishing routines, as students see increasing

rigor in the classroom. “We are constantly looking at how to add additional supports,” Duncan said. “We are excited to announce our mascot, school colors, and launch our clubs this month.” September is also “wellness month” with a focus on everyday activities to build a healthy mind, body and spirit, he added. Fulton Schools’ Innovation Academy provides another learning option for students outside a traditional high school. The curriculum focuses on

building “creators and problem solvers,” Duncan said, with students on career paths of healthcare sciences, engineering or informational technology. The school is supported by a long list of community partners including WellStar and Emory health systems, Children’s Hospital, Georgia Tech and Georgia State universities, Southern Company, AT&T and Microsoft. Mentors from all sectors of area business and civic organizations will also lend their expertise and guidance to students.

OPINION

Let me tell you a story Along time ago - it feels like a hundred years - when I was in college, I took karate classes. The style - Cuong Nhu was a relatively new style - a mix of other styles both “hard” and “soft” and the RAY APPEN founder, O’Sensei Publisher Emeritus Ngo Dong, lived and ray@appenmedia.com taught in Gainesville, Florida where he was a PhD student of Entomology. After returning to Vietnam in 1973, he became president of a community college and local organizer. Towards the end of the war in the early 70’s the Viet Cong had his family under house arrest. They fled Vietnam and were one of “the boat people” who left Vietnam in a small boat to escape. After immigrating to the United States, Sensei Dong continued teaching his style of martial arts which has spread across the United States and in other parts of the world. My sister Allyson took up the style when she went

to UF and, unlike me, she continued her training until this day and is now one of the highest-ranking women in the style. She still teaches and tests the black belts around the country and has been my conduit to keeping touch with my karate friends from way back then. One thing that I will never forget about Cuong Nhu was meeting the founder. O’Sensei Dong was a not a large man and probably never weighed more than 160 pounds, if that. He held elite black belt rankings in multiple styles - Wing Chun, Vovinam, Shotokan, and Judo. Later in life, he took up distance running and completed 23 marathons, 8 ultra-marathons (of 50 miles), and 14 100 mile ultras. That is, this man was not like you or me; he was more like some superhero from Marvel, but in real life. He feared no man. When he began declining from early onset Alzheimer’s Disease, his son Quynh took over the leadership of Cuong Nhu. I only met his son Quynh a couple times. Like his father, Quynh was not a big guy. Think of someone a cross between Bruce Lee, Mohammad Ali, and

Roger Federer - lightening fast, fearless, intense, and intimidating —someone who walks into the room and takes all the air from it. And you know, Ali used to brag that he could turn out the lights and get into bed under the blankets before the lights went out. Of course, that was an exaggeration because no one could be that fast. Except Quynh. In less than the blink of an eye he could be behind an opponent or to the side or planting a kick at head level or higher before the other guy even saw him move. He was that good, that strong, that fast. I feel safe in saying that he was probably the most fit human I have ever seen or met. So, on with the story. Yesterday, my sister called me. “Quynh is dead,” she said. He was 57 years old and left behind a wife, three children and a stepson, many professional colleagues, neighbors, a world-wide school of martial arts with thousands of students, and his father’s mission. Dead at 57 just made no sense when I heard the news. No way. Afterall, he was too strong, too fit, and too special for anything like a virus

called Covid-19 to catch up with him, much less kill him in less than a few weeks. He died like so many others, struggling for each breath. Imagine that for yourself. Yes, even the mighty Quynh (pronounced “Quin”) was a weakling compared to this insidious virus and, yes, his number did come up, didn’t it? I can forgive him for leaving us at such a young age. But I cannot forgive him for completely missing what this whole thing is about and that it wasn’t all about him — in fact it had almost nothing to do with him. Getting vaccinated is all about everyone else - Quynh’s family, his children who may have been infected or their school mates or their teachers who may have infected or ultimately killed. I can’t forgive him for possibly infecting the people he worked with in the office, or the clerk he talked to at the grocery store, or the next-door neighbor’s kid who came over to speak with him. I can’t forgive him for possibly infecting and killing the waitress at the restaurant he dined in or his neighbor’s mother who he greeted. Why did this amazing, talented, disciplined, intelligent man think that vaccinations have anything at all to do with just him? How is that possible? It’s not all about you. It is about respect for everyone around you - for humanity. And, it’s not about your “rights.” In relative terms, you don’t have this right. It’s not about who you vote for or who you are. It’s about the fact that you don’t have the right to potentially infect and kill other people because you think you have the right not to get vaccinated. You don’t have that right, sorry. I am so sorry. We all are. Maybe Quynh’s legacy will be that his death at 57 will inspire some of the almost 40% who are not vaccinated, to wake up and go do the right thing — and get vaccinated. Rest in peace Grandmaster Quynh.

THE INVESTMENT COACH

OPINION

The green energy quest and reality In 1849, Abraham Lincoln invented a device to lift boats over shoals, and he remains the only American president to be granted a patent. Lincoln also was LEWIS J. WALKER, CFP intrigued with wind power. In a lecture on inventions and discoveries in 1860 he ruminated, “As yet, the wind is an untamed and unharnessed

force; and quite possibly one the greatest discoveries hereafter to be made, will be the taming, and harnessing of it.” Fast-forward 161 years. We’re still trumpeting wind power and other renewable energy resources as “the future.” Speculative enthusiasm has pushed green energy stocks to stratospheric valuations. Anything “green” volatile stocks like Tesla, special purpose acquisition companies (SPACS), clean energy ETFs, etc. is attracting gobs of money. Realize that a dose of reality

may bring some prices back to terra firma as failures and setbacks plague the market. Electric cars (EVs) currently comprise 3 percent of total vehicle sales nationwide. The Wall Street Journal, 7/26/21, reported that the Electric Highway Coalition seeks to build an EV “fast charging” network spanning a large portion of America. One charging unit and stall costs about $110,000 to build, and we’d need stations about every 50 miles on popular highways. A 50-unit recharging station on a busy interstate highway would cost $5.5 million. President Biden proposes spending billions for charging stations as part of his infrastructure plan. But until charging stations are as ubiqui-

tous as gas stations, the Great American Road Trip will be confined largely to gas-powered vehicles. However, gas-powered vehicles represent the single largest source of America’s greenhouse gases, producing more than 25 percent of emissions. (New York Times (8/6/21). Obviously, increasing EV use is a desirable goal. President Biden has said that by 2030, half of all vehicle sales should be electric. That’s an ambitious target for less than nine years away. EVs are powered by energy intensive lithium-ion batteries, and a tremendous amount of energy goes into just manufacturing the batteries. That fact points to other

Walker: Continued from Page 20 challenges. One major issue involves the sourcing of critical materials. A report from the International Energy Agency (IEA), May, 2021, notes, “Wind, solar, and battery technologies are built from an array of ‘energy transition minerals’ (ETMs) that must be mined and processed.” Demand for lithium, nickel, graphite and rare-earth minerals is set to explode by 2035-2040. However, declares energy expert Mark Mills, there are no current plans to fund and build the needed mines and refineries. “The supply of ETMs is entirely aspirational,” says he. (WSJ, “Biden’s Not-So-Clean Energy Transition,” 5/12/21). Mills notes that a land-based wind plant sucks up nine times more mineral resources than a natural gas-fired Solution power plant, and a typical EV requires

six times the mineral inputs of a conventional car. The IEA sees the movement toward EVs as representing “a shift from a fuel-intensive to a material-intensive energy system.” Adds Mills, “That means a shift away from liquids and gases whose extraction and transport leave a very light footprint on the land and are transported easily, cheaply and efficiently, and toward big-footprint mines, the energy-intensive transport of massive amounts of rocks and other solid materials, and subsequent chemical processing and refining.” The 2,700 page Senate infrastructure bill offers massive subsidies to support breakthroughs in battery technology and charging station efficiency, as well as concepts as diverse as carbon capture, clean hydrogen, advanced nuclear reactor projects, and “drawing board ideas” with promise. The federal government is moving toward an increased role as a “venture capitalist” using dollars extracted from taxpayers and dollars borrowed or printed, all with fiscal policy implications. With

billions and even trillions of dollars sloshing around, investors will be challenged to consider winners and losers in our race to a cleaner tomorrow. Existing technology will need upgrades. Early model wind turbines are requiring more expensive maintenance than contemplated, and they are failing at higher rates than expected. The same challenges plague photovoltaic solar (PV) facilities which also are degrading at a rate faster than expected. Currently, 20 percent of the energy generated in America comes from sustainable sources. Aspirations of further progress are bedeviled by high costs and/or unproven technology. But good news in the quest for cleaner energy and environmental care may be seen in comments by economic and public policy expert Stephen Moore posted on ramussenreports.com, 8/3/21. Said Moore, “The U.S. is blowing out the rest of the world in tech leadership. No other country in the world comes anywhere close in tech leadership and the dominance of our made-in-America

21st-century companies.” Inventors, scientists, and entrepreneurs press on and advances will come. Hydrogen, nanotechnology, and small modular nuclear reactors hold promise. Professional money managers and venture capitalists strive to separate hype and the madness of crowds from truly promising breakthroughs worthy of investment for serious long-term wealth-builders and wealthpreservationists. In our critical journey to a sustainable tomorrow, money will be made and money lost. That’s the nature of progress.
