FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — After two workers engaged in a fight recently, one struck the other on his head with a piece of wood.

The man was arguing with another worker about wearing hard hats and respecting others’ hard hats. When the

by Johns Creek police Sept. 9 for possession of narcotics with the intent to distribute. Officers identified the man, who had a warrant for his arrest in Dekalb and Gwinnett counties, and conducted a traffic stop.

During the traffic stop, police searched the vehicle after smelling marijuana. Officers located 24.9 grams of marijuana, 198 Xanax pills, 98 MDMA pills, 10.3 grams of crystal meth and six THC oil tubes.

The wanted man was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and his passenger was charged with possession of Schedule I and possession of Schedule II drugs.

Laser Cataract Surgery: Is It All Hype?

Many of you reading this article may not have realized that cataract surgery has evolved rapidly in the past 3-4 years. This pace of change pales in comparison to how the procedure has evolved in the past 50 years. For perspective, the procedure started off around 2000 years ago by an Indian sage named Sushruta. His tools?

Early morning rays of sunlight, a long thin needle, ghee (clarified butter) and Sanskrit verses. Fast forward to 2017 and the procedure can be a wonderful mixture of OCT guided real-time imagery, femtosecond laser driven tissue cutting and advanced phacoemulsification with active fluidics.

Is it fancy? Oh yes.

Does Milan Eye Center have one? Of course.

Is it necessary? Well, no and yes.

Though the recent evolution in the cataract surgery space with femtosecond laser is significant, the procedure evolved considerably after the advent of phacoemulsification in the late 1960s by Dr. Charles Kelman.

The improvements in phacoemulsification technology since then have been continuous, innovative and powerful. So much so, that outcomes from modern phacoemulsification (this means cataract surgery by hand without laser) are equivalent to femtosecond laser cataract surgery - as has been proven in several studies. Put another way, femtosecond laser cataract surgery is non-superior to manual cataract surgery in many instances - but not all instances.

Just as people don’t come in the same color, shape or size, neither do cataracts. We have learnt over time that certain cataract types are not optimal for manual cataract surgery. Cataracts that are very dense, cataracts that are associated with a weakened cornea and cataracts that are unstable are some of the instances where manual cataract surgery is not ideal. This is where laser cataract surgery shines - no pun intended! Femtosecond laser cataract surgery enables the surgeon to break up a rockhard cataract before entering the eye, enables the creation of beautiful and perfect circular openings in unstable and misaligned cataracts and minimizes the creation of by-product energy that can harm surrounding tissue. In short, it is a much needed and precise tool for these complex cases. A secondary function of femtosecond laser is astigmatism correction via astigmatic keratotomies. These are precisely placed incisions in the cornea, the clear, dome shaped tissue covering the eye.

The role of laser cataract surgery may evolve still as more advanced intraocular lenses are introduced that require more precise placement. As laser platforms become smaller and more integrated into the operating room workflow, the use may also increase.

Councilmembers, mayor criticize timing, openness

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Sept. 12 Roswell City Council meeting closed with a contentious agenda item after one council member attempted to elect a temporary mayor pro tem, allegedly without much prior discussion or notice.

During the meeting’s last half hour, Councilman Marcelo Zapata attempted, but ultimately failed, to elect a temporary mayor pro tem. The position has been vacant for about three weeks when the previous holder, Donald J. Horton, resigned to run for Roswell Mayor this fall. His seat, Post 3, will also be on the Nov. 7 ballot during a special election.

Zapata indicated that Councilwoman Lori Henry, who is also running for mayor, should be named mayor pro tem. Her seat, Post 4, is also up for

election.

The nomination was met with protests from both the mayor and other councilmembers.

Mayor Jere Wood criticized the nomination for its timing and for its lack of communication with the whole council.

The item was added as an addendum to the agenda the afternoon of the council meeting.

“In the past, it has been the universal practice of council to discuss it with all of their colleagues before bringing something forward,” Wood said. “I’m sorry to see that my council has come to this. I hope that the next mayor, whoever they may be, will have better luck in having a council who communicates and doesn’t act like Washington D.C. politicians.”

Zapata said he did not speak to all of the councilmembers, but did speak to the “majority,” before adding the items because he did not have the time.

When asked by Wood if Zapata thought if such conduct was appropriate, Zapata chose not to answer.

Councilwoman Nancy Diamond con-

firmed that no one discussed the item with her before the meeting.

“It is extremely frustrating,” she said. “For six years, we had these conversations. We worked together. It wasn’t like this… This doesn’t look good for anybody. This doesn’t look good for Lori or for us.”

Diamond added that she thought the timing of the addition was too late for any public notice and that it was inappropriate for a mayoral candidate to hold that position. She then suggested that Councilman Orlans, who is not seeking reelection for Post 5, would be a more appropriate choice for his 25 years of service and work ethic, she said.

Councilman Mike Palermo, who initially seconded the motion, said that he was not included in previous discussion for such items and had not known that Zapata had not discussed the election with others. He retracted his vote and instead motioned to defer until the next council meeting.

That motion passed 3-2, with Palermo, Henry and Zapata in support.

Fulton County reduces 2017 millage rate ATLANTA – The Fulton County Board of Commissioners approved a reduction Wednesday, Sept. 6, in the 2017 tax rate on property.

The General Fund millage rate was approved at 10.380, down 0.07 mills from the 2016 millage rate of 10.450.

This marks the third year in a row the General Fund millage rate was reduced. The Bond Fund millage rate will remain unchanged at 0.250.

Fulton Commissioner Bob Ellis said

the actions of the past few months have been focused on addressing a problematic 2017 residential property assessment process in a way that was most equitable to homeowners.

“However, I want you to know that discussions ELLIS have been ongoing with state legislators regarding changes that

can be made to our property tax system in Fulton County and potentially throughout the state,” Ellis said.

Ellis said he is lobbying for tax code changes in three areas: property tax caps for homeowners, potential expanded exemptions for seniors and general reforms of the property tax assessment process.

Alpharetta settles glass recycling issue

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Residents in Alpharetta can unpack their garages soon and recycle all the glass they’ve been stashing since spring.

The City Council signed a contract with Republic Services Monday to begin weekly curbside pickups later this year.

City Finance Director Tom Harris said the agreement also calls for a contract extension with Republic through the first part of 2022. The contract also allows for periodic rate adjustments based on the Consumer Price Index.

With the signed contract, Harris

said the hauler expects to take delivery on extra recycling bins in November and begin service in December.

Council members voted 5-1 to implement weekly glass recycling pickup for a charge of $3 per month for Alpharetta’s 16,000 households.

“The only comments I’ve gotten from my neighbors and residents I’ve encountered is ‘Please, do something about it,’” Councilman Chris Owens said. “I know it’s been awhile…something that seems so easy when it came up turned out not to be.”

Glass recycling was halted this spring when Republic announced it could no longer accept glass items mixed in with regular household recyclables. Since then, the city has pur-

sued other options, including installing its own collection sites for glass.

An online poll conducted earlier this year showed residents were split almost equally between three options: paying extra for separate curbside pickup; hauling their own glass recyclables to a central location; or tossing their glass in the trash.

Council members were divided initially between whether glass recycling collections should be weekly or biweekly. The cost for biweekly collections was $2.39 per month.

The general consensus among the council Monday, however, was that weekly collections would eliminate confusion among residents about when to set out their bins.

Rotarians launch campaign to collect unused drugs ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta Rotary Club members joined Public Safety Department officials Monday for the launch of a citywide effort to curb prescription drug abuse.

With the help of the city’s Public Works Department, Rotarians installed seven collection boxes for prescription drugs. The boxes are located at each of the city’s six fire stations and at police headquarters.

“This is right up the alley with the kinds of things we like to do,” said Dan Merkel, Rotary past president.

Merkel said the club pitched in the $9,000 needed to

buy the secure boxes, and the city installed them. The boxes, bolted to the concrete, will be emptied regularly and are accessible at all times.

Merkel, who has participated in government panels formed to address opiate addiction in North Fulton, said many addictions begin with unused medications left unattended in medicine cabinets. He said he hopes the collection boxes will help eliminate one avenue on the path to addiction.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Close to 200 people gathered at the wooded home of Roswell Mayor Jere Wood Sunday for the fourth Birthday Fundraiser to benefit the Child Development Association.

This year’s celebrant was the Rev. Dr. Malone Dodson, retired senior minister at Roswell United Methodist Church. Dodson was celebrating his 80th birthday.

The evening’s array of food, music, dancing and mingling drew a host of dignitaries, including U.S. Rep. Karen Handel, Fulton County Sheriff Theodore Jackson and state Sen. Josh McKoon of Columbus, who is running for Georgia Secretary of State.

Co-chairs for the event, Bob Hagan and Claudia Wood said they expected the evening’s turnout would raise $15,000 for scholarships to the preschool.

“These are scholarships for God’s children,” Hagan said. “We want people to come out and celebrate someone in our community who supports the CDA. We’re having a blast.”

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper’s (CRK) mission is to advocate and secure the protection and stewardship of the Chattahoochee River, including its lakes, tributaries and watershed, in order to restore and conserve their ecological health for the people and wildlife that depend on the river system.

Established in 1994, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (CRK) is an environmental advocacy organization with more than 7,200 members dedicated solely to protecting and restoring the Chattahoochee River Basin — drinking water source for nearly four million people. CRK was the 11th licensed program in the international Waterkeeper Alliance, now close to 250 organizations strong.

From the north Georgia mountains to the Florida border, the Chattahoochee River is impacted by unplanned development, storm runoff and trash from industries, roads, and construction sites, and discharges from sewage treatment plants. Withdrawals from the river by municipalities and industries also affect its health through consumptive loss of water that is not returned to the river, impacting downstream water quality, recreation and ecology. While significant improvements have been made in the river, much remains to be accomplished.

CRK actively uses advocacy, education, research, communication, cooperation, monitoring and legal actions to protect and preserve the Chattahoochee and its watershed.

There are many cap-like mechanisms used in other states and by some local governments in Georgia that could be employed.

Fulton County taxing authorities – city, school and county government – could and should have the same cap mechanisms in place so that homeowners have a degree of assurance that their tax bills cannot increase over a certain percentage amount, Ellis said.

Similar to property tax caps, there has also been a great deal of discussion around potential expanded exemptions for senior citizens in Fulton County who, unlike seniors in many other counties, continue to pay schools taxes, Ellis said.

“Reducing or eliminating the school tax for our seniors would also require state legislation that calls for a referendum by the voters,” Ellis said. “We need to have greater oversight that allows us to hold the Fulton County Board of Assessors more accountable.”

Business Expo features startups hungry for success Showcase offers entrepreneurs expert critiques

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Six local entrepreneurs got a chance to pitch their startups before a panel of experts Friday at the fifth annual Business Expo at the Alpharetta Marriott.

The third annual Startup Technology Showcase, sponsored by Tech Alpharetta, featured new local businesses looking to market and grow their customer base. The showcase was the opening event at the Business Expo, which featured close to 100 businesses, said John Ray, president of the Alpharetta Business Association, which sponsors the Expo.

Ray said the entrepreneur showcase serves as a welcome to the local business community.

“It’s a way to pull our technical companies into the mainstream and help them grow their businesses,” he said.

Many of the young businesses are in the early stages of establishing their products on the market, and many are members of Tech Alpharetta’s Innovation Center.

The six companies included: • Atlanta Urban Farms – Formed in 2013, the company grows non-GMO fruit, vegetable, herb and leafy green seedlings for its Tower Garden growing system. These Tower Gardens provide urban farms to rooftops, parking lots and other areas, all while using 10 percent of the water and space used in traditional gardens.

• eData Collectors Inc. – The company uses mobile technology to streamline data collection processes and let staff do their jobs more efficiently and quicker. The system means fewer lost paper documents, manual data entry, fewer errors and omissions. Users have access to easy-to-use business forms, maps and data, while communicating with other team members in real time.

• WeMontage – The company offers a website that lets you turn your digital images into a large, custom collage, on removable wallpaper.

Following the four-minute presentations, the panel of local business experts provided the presenters with feedback about their pitches.

The panel included Tom Berger, a seasoned senior operating manager with 22 years of big company experience and 23 years of start-up company experience in telecommunications and high tech including working within the venture capital community for six years.

Capel English, a hands on multi-discipline engineer and innovator with more than 25 years of mechanical design and software development experience, also lent his expertise to the showcase.

Brock Kolls was the third panelist.

Kolls is a serial entrepreneur and a registered U.S. Patent agent with more than 17 years of patent drafting and prosecution experience, and with more than 80 patents to his credit.

This year’s Expo attracted close to 1,000 visitors.

What do you think are the key issues for the city and citizens?

We need business alliances that share the vision of responsible growth while protecting the appeal of Roswell. Traffic congestion is choking and overtaking our city. It’s also essential to reinvent underutilized retail locations to create destination spots, bringing more business into our community.

If elected, what are some of the first issues or projects that you plan to tackle?

Holding onto the history and green space that make Roswell a desirable community is a priority. The new trend of clear-cutting trees needs to be reversed.

The first step is to ensure our zoning codes protect our suburban character.

Matthew Tyser Background: Matthew Tyser has 35-years of experience as a certified

public accountant, CEO and COO. Tyser lives with his wife of 28 years, Susan. They have three children: David, Brian and Sarah.

What made you decide to run?

TYSER No one will fight harder than me to stop tax increases here in Roswell. Senior citizens, in particular, have been devastated by rising taxes over the years. The increase in property taxes in Fulton County this past summer helped me realize that my financial experience is truly needed in government.

What do you think are the key issues for the city and citizens?

The most important one is the responsible use of our taxpayer funds and preventing future tax increases.

The issue of managing traffic and improving the connectivity of our roads is another issue that is of great importance.

If elected, what are some of the first issues or projects that you plan to tackle?

The first area I would focus on would be to improve traffic in Roswell.

I intend to ensure that Roswell receives our fair share of the T-SPLOST funds that the voters approved last year.

The second area that I want to address is to establish a system that will control, continuously review and audit any future projects that are approved

by City Council.

Fulton Schools blame tax exemptions for drop in revenues Millage rate hike is first for district since 2010

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Fulton School System officials are raising questions about the increasing trend toward tax exemptions to lure businesses to the area, and the significant impact that loss of revenue may have on school operations.

Last week the Fulton School Board adopted a millage rate of 18.546 to fund the 2017-18 school system budget -- a .044 increase from last year’s millage rate. This was the first increase in millage in Fulton County since 2010, and was necessary to maintain a revenue-neutral budget, district officials said.

School officials were quick to point out the millage increase will bring in the same amount of revenue as last year.

Even with the millage hike, Fulton Schools still faces a $15 million shortfall in FY18. Those shortages will be made up in a number of ways, officials

noted, including cuts to department budgets and withdrawals from the system’s healthy reserve funds.

Chief Financial Officer Robert Morales said the $1.5 billion budget for Fiscal Year 2018 was based on an expected 6 percent increase in property tax revenues provided to them by Fulton County tax officials last spring.

Local tax revenue makes up more than 60 percent of the system’s operating budget.

“We have subsequently learned that revenue grew less than 3 percent,” said Morales. “Additionally we learned exemptions — which are deductions to revenue — grew by more than 17 percent because of [Fulton County] Development Authority (FCDA) decisions and free port exemptions.”

Those exemptions come in the form of tax abatements and other tax-reducing incentives offered to new and expanding businesses in Fulton County.

The free port exemption was the decision by Fulton County last year to give businesses a 100 percent tax exemption on all inventory and raw materials stored temporarily in the business.

“The school system depends on property taxes as its main source of revenue [and] if property taxes aren’t

received then it’s a problem for us,” Morales said.

Al Nash, director of FCDA, countered the assertion that school systems are financially harmed by business incentives, pointing to a long list of studies that prove otherwise, including a recent report by Ernst and Young.

“What we are seeing is there are millions more dollars to the schools through [job creation] and direct and indirect [sources] than would have been collected without tax abatement,” said Nash.

He pointed to the Avalon development in Alpharetta which sat unused for many years, generating little tax revenue, until tax incentives spurred a developer to complete the highly profitable complex. That is only one example, he noted, of significant development encouraged by incentives.

“A piece of property may be on the tax rolls for $100,000 for years and someone comes in and does something that is now worth $20 million...that would not occur if not for tax abatement,” said Nash.

He said the free port exemption on inventory is standard practice in many states, and requires voter approval.

Nash could not say how many counties in Georgia give businesses a 100

percent exemption, as Fulton County provides.

While jobs and businesses are vital, Alpharetta school board member Katie Reeves noted business growth goes hand in hand with school growth.

“Everyone likes new businesses,” said Reeves. “But new jobs come with new students, and those new students come with costs.”

Additionally, impact fees which developers pay to help offset increased demands for services do not flow to the school systems; a point which educators have long fought.

School Board member Gail Dean of Sandy Springs said she wants more transparency in how tax abatements are being used and the impact on school systems.

“I’m just curious if there is something we can do to hold [entities] accountable to ensure we are not giving away the store,” Dean said.

Superintendent Jeff Rose said he would push for more open communication between all parties; a move that was also supported by Nash of DAFC. “We need to have face-to-face communication and let people know our priorities, and the impact [these issues] have on our local taxpayers and the impact on our schools,” Rose said.

The state average on the annual test for college acceptance was 21.4, the second consecutive year of increased scores, and slightly higher than the national average of 21. A perfect score on the ACT is 36.

Locally, students in North Fulton high schools posted among the highest scores in the state, led by Northview High with an average of 27.6. Northview was followed by strong performances from students at Johns Creek (26.6) and Chattahoochee (26.3).

“Georgia students continue to increase their scores – and outpace the nation – on the ACT,” said State School Superintendent Richard Woods.

“This is a testament to the hard work of Georgia’s students as they enjoy greater flexibility and fewer state restrictions in the classroom.”

In recent years, Georgia has slowly moved away from state control of education, allowing local systems greater flexibility over curriculum and testing.

In 2012, the Fulton School System became the state’s largest charter system.

Woods noted results of the 2017 ACT also showed an increase in performance in all subject areas – English, Math, Reading and Science – as well as the Readiness Benchmarks. Hitting the benchmark scores indicates the student has a 50 percent chance of obtaining at least a B in that subject area in college.

In Fulton, a record-high 44 percent of students taking the 2017 ACT met the College Readiness Benchmarks in all four subject areas. Among the eight North Fulton high schools that number was 56 percent of all test takers.

Tropical storm leaves death, damage in its wake Wife of former Cumming official dies in accident

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The wife of the former Cumming Police Chief was killed Sept. 11 when a tree fell on the car she was a passenger in.

Nancy Eason, 67, of Cumming, was in a car parked in the driveway of a home on Shadburn Road in North Forsyth around 5:30 p.m. when the incident happened, according to Public Information Officer Deputy Doug Rainwater.

Deputies and firefighters arrived to find a large tree had fallen on the car and trapped the occupants.

Eason’s husband, Mike, the driver, was removed from the vehicle and suffered minor injuries.

Nancy remained trapped while deputies and firefighters worked to rescue her.

“Sadly, the female passenger was fatally injured,” Rainwater said. “Mrs.

The only major issues police and fire departments reported were some downed trees and powerlines, according to Officer Lisa Holland. There were no deaths or injuries reported.

A few trees fell across major roads, completely blocking access, including on South Atlanta Street, Azalea Road and Hembree Road. The city’s Department of Transportation was stationed at various points to clear these trees with chainsaws.

The majority of the trees fell because of the oversaturated ground rather than from wind gusts, Holland said.

One tree at Mansell Road near Houze Road fell on some powerlines, requiring Georgia Power to have to cut the electricity in that area to clear it. A few powerlines did fall across the city, but nothing major, Holland said.

Flood-prone areas, such as Don White Park and Azalea Road, unsurprisingly experienced some flooding, she added.

Humane Society sets up temporary shelter in Roswell Hundreds of animals rescued from Southeast

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — More than 400 animals were rescued recently after the Atlanta Humane Society set up a temporary shelter in Roswell to house homeless cats and dogs displaced by recent hurricanes.

During the storm, Roswell’s 911 center used their service Nixle to inform citizens of downed trees and powerlines, road closings and other emergencies. Residents can subscribe to Nixle for free to receive such notifications year round through the city’s website roswellgov.com.

Alpharetta experiences power outages ALPHARETTA, Ga. - Alpharetta officials are still assessing the property damage waged by the storm on Sept. 11.

“We had a lot of downed trees, a lot on the roadways,” Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard said.

There were also reports of power outages throughout the city. Most sections had power restored by Wednesday, and a few areas had to wait until Thursday morning.

Drinkard said the only damage to city property was minor damage to a wall near Rest Haven Cemetery on Milton Avenue. As far as private property, he said, the city is just beginning to receive permitting requests for roofs and decks damaged by the storm.

The city opened a temporary shelter at the Wills Park Community Center Sept. 9, a day before Irma struck south Florida. By the time the remnants of the storm reached north Georgia, the shelter housed 70 people, most of them from Florida.

During their stay, close to a dozen local churches, businesses and restaurants, including Lowe’s, Dickey’s Barbecue and Nothing Bundt Cakes, stopped by with food and supplies, Young said.

Even people’s pets were given shelter in Alpharetta. But where can you go with your horses and the water is rising?

In preparation for the storm, the Alpharetta City Council opened up the Alpharetta Equestrian Center to horse owners and their horses.

Around 100 equine refugees from Florida and Georgia were given shelter, food, straw and extra carrots. The Equestrian Center also opened its grounds to RVs and campers with free water and power connections.

Milton suffers minor damage MILTON, GA. - Milton city officials with public works, communications, police and fire were in for a long day that began at 5 a.m., Sept. 11, but the city suffered no major damage during Irma’s path through Georgia.

Matt Marietta, Milton’s emergency management coordinator, said there were other fallen trees, but those were cost.

But this was not the Equestrian Center’s first rodeo. It has a veterinarian on call and the Georgia Hunter Jumper Association was also kicking in with feed and supplies for the horses.

Peter Stenborg from DeLand, Florida, drove up along with his horse, Chick, fleeing the storm. He has a friend who lives in the area and was told about the facility here.

“I was going to stay in Perry, but the storm started coming too close. So we headed for Alpharetta,” Stenborg said.

“When they told us they would not charge us a cent, that pretty nice.”

His son, daughter and their families came as well but rented Airbnb homes because of the children and pets.

Stenborg said he rode out the last hurricane, but he listened to the warnings and decided to evacuate.

He said he would go back just as soon as the infrastructure – power, water, gasoline and stores – were all back in operation.

Online auction company makes downsizing easier MaxSold boasts 98% success rate

MaxSold, founded 60 years ago and first brought to the Atlanta area in April 2014, offers estate sale auctions online for people who want to downsize, relocate or simply get rid of some clutter.

Anything ranging from art, tools, vehicles and modern items can be found on the site. And unlike other online consumer-to-consumer companies, MaxSold curates hyperlocal auctions.

This emphasis on locality plays a key role in how the business runs.

Items aren’t shipped. Instead, MaxSold helps coordinate a pickup time and date for items by categories, with smaller items being picked up first.

MaxSold serves 30 metro areas in North America, including Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Houston and New

Jersey. Atlanta is one of the latest to join the ranks.

MaxSold set its sights on North Fulton and the metro Atlanta area because they saw that people were throwing away items they didn’t even know were valuable, according to CEO Sushee Perumal.

“Their goods were being cherry picked with the rest going to landfills,” Perumal said.

In its three-year Atlanta history, the company has more than doubled its coverage. Its first region sale was in Dunwoody, which saw all but one of its 188 listings sold – a coffee table book.

It has since grown to include most of North Atlanta, including the cities of Alpharetta, Cumming, Johns Creek and Roswell.

The first Dunwoody auction was no outlier. Perumal said the company consistently holds a 98 percent sellthrough rate.

Born world apart, ministers find friendship Alpharettan, Indian men of the cloth find common ground

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The Rev. Raj Nadella serves as assistant professor of New Testament Studies at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, while the Rev. G. Oliver Wagner serves as senior pastor at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church. Yet they had to travel thousands of miles together to become friends.

Wagner met Nadella through the Columbia Seminary’s “Learning for Life” program, and the Presbyterian Seminary which offers continuing education classes and travel experiences for the community.

“I signed up for a class and Raj was one of the co-professors for the class,” said Wagner. “So I met him that way.

But it was when Raj was a co-leader on a trip to India that I also was on that we really got to know one another.”

“Christianity is largely a colonial legacy from Britain, but there are some Indian churches that trace their roots back to at least the 3rd century and

some even claim the 1st century,” he said.

The Christian church is still a small religious minority in India but its roots are deep.

“India was always a place I had hoped to go. And for me, it was more

educational for me to see India than just as a tourist,” Wagner said.

Wagner and Nadella found they had a natural affinity for one another as individuals and as theologians.

“For me I found Raj a very friendly, open spirit. He has worked hard and brings great insights into history and theology of the church,” Wagner said.

“He has a great sense of humor and he is just a lot more approachable than you find with most seminary faculty members.”

But it was on the trip to India that Wagner and Nadella really got to know each other. Not only was Nadella one of the leaders of the trip, he was the de facto guide and interpreter.

“For many Christians, Christianity is a linear religion with roots directly from Jerusalem to Rome and all points west. But Raj is proof Christianity has Eastern roots as well,” Wagner said.

For Nadella, it was a long journey to meet Wagner as well. Nadella was born a Hindu and came to Christianity only after his mother converted. In India, although outlawed by the government, the caste system still exists. And Nadella found Christianity spiritually

Dr. Taylor, congratulations on winning Best Vein Care Specialist and Runner Up for Best Dermatologist for North Fulton 2017! What do your think has allowed for this success so quickly after opening your practice?

Dr. Taylor: “When my wife and I made the decision to move home be close to family and to open a practice that would serve our community, we knew it would be a challenging road.

And it has been! But I am just so thankful for the community’s support, for my wonderful coworkers and for my patients! I was confident in my training and in my experience as a Mohs surgeon and vein care physician, but I knew that there are a lot of moving parts to a practice, some of which I knew little about. Since opening on Jan 30th 2017, we have made a lot changes and tweaks to try to make our practice a place where patients feel heard, well cared for and valued.

How did you react to the news of winning both these titles?

To say that I was shocked and overwhelmed with appreciation for winning “Best Vain Care” Specialist and runner up for “Best Dermatologist” in North Fulton after merely 7 months of practice here in Alpharetta is an understatement. I was and am thrilled. I hope that this means that our patients realize the depth of my dedication and that my care and concern for my patients continues past 5:00pm.

As a dermatologist, how did you come to excel in the field of vein treatment?

After becoming a board-certified dermatologist, I spent a fellowship year in La Jolla, California, where I was trained by a cardiothoracic surgeon and cosmetic dermatologists in the Scripps Vein Clinic while also training in Mohs surgery. I am exceptionally proud of our Best Vein Care title, as I believe that I truly do provide patients with excellent vein care services usually provided by several different specialists. I feel so

fortunate to be able to address both medically significant vein disease as well as cosmetic venous issues. I am excited to continue to provide my patients this great service.

You mentioned “Mohs surgery” – DR. TAYLOR what is it? And what does “MOHS” stand for?

Mohs surgery is a special technique for removing skin cancer. The word “Mohs” isn’t an acronym. Mohs is actually named after Dr. Mohs, the surgeon who first pioneered this advanced method for curing skin cancer. With Mohs surgery, a cancer is removed in layers and examined under the microscope until it is completely gone – the technique carries a 99% cure rate for most skin cancers.

As for runner up for Best Dermatologist, I never expected to be on the radar for this award so soon after opening, and I am just so glad that I have made a positive impression! I believe that my expertise in Mohs surgery likely contributed to my patients’ happiness and to this honor.

Is there anything else that you would like to share?

I do want to thank my staff for all their help. At Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta, we have been blessed with the most reliable, dedicated and genuine staff one could hope for: we have a team of very knowledgeable, experienced and energetic people working together. They care so much for our patients. It feels so wonderful to walk into work and have staff ask how patient x or patient y is doing and say they were thinking of them over the weekend. Bright, fun and fiercely independent, Mansions at Alpharetta resident Katie Croye has always done it her way.

Katie began her married life as a dedicated wife and mother and enjoyed raising her children until they entered college. With an empty nest and after the loss of her husband, she decided to “get out into the world again” and began her tenure as a professional, employed with an office supply company in West Virginia. “I got to travel some and as a widow, working gave me something to do,” said Katie.

When her job ended and with the encouragement of her children, Katie made the decision to move in with her daughter in North Carolina. “My dear daughter worried herself to death about me, and of course, I worried about living with her!”

Not wanting to be a burden, Katie decided to move closer to another daughter in Alpharetta, but not to move into her home. Moving to The Mansions was easier than she anticipated. When asked what was the first thing she did when she moved in to her beautiful new home, Katie replied, “I got rid of my car. I love getting in our Mansions bus and going places. No more driving for me!”

Founder and Director Jonnie, received her early training in Atlanta, New York City and the National Ballet School in Canada. Having taught for over 45 years, she is the Founding Artistic Director of Atlanta Dance Theatre, the official performing company for The Dancers Studio/Backstage in North Atlanta. She has taught for many major dance organizations and is active in several art organizations.

Her credits include: Regional Ballet, Musical Comedy Productions, Dinner Theatre and Touring groups, both as a

performer and a choreographer.

NORTH ATLANTA’S BIGGEST LOSER Kimberly Flowers, of Duluth, weighed 307 pounds in February of 2016 when she walked into Medical Fitness and Wellness Group of Johns Creek for a weight loss consultation. Kimberly’s primary care physician, Dr. Reshma Shah, of Perimeter North Family Medicine, advised her to start working with a personal trainer and nutritionist or consider Bariatric surgery as a last resort which Kimberly was vehemently opposed to.

Here at The Original Pancake House Alpharetta we do things differently than other breakfast restaurants. There are a lot of quality features that you can only get at our location in the ever growing breakfast market. For many years full service breakfast restaurants have been under served in the restaurant market arena. That is slowly becoming not the case as many new full service breakfast chains and franchises emerge on the scene.

The Original Pancake House is a franchise and one of the oldest. OPH started franchising in 1954. We are unique in that we have not changed a thing since then. The menu and the recipes are the same. The quality and ingredients we use are uncompromised.

Just a few examples: We squeeze orange juice every morning. It takes 5 to 8 oranges to make a single glass of juice.

We buy all of our eggs from a local egg farmer. He delivers hundreds of dozens of eggs to us several times a week and we hand crack them all.

Other breakfast restaurants buy eggs that are bagged and cracked by a machine in advance. We clarify butter to season all of our pancake griddles and to cook all of the eggs in. Our pancake batter is made from scratch with our own sour starter. The list goes on.

Centennial reverses its fortunes, comes back to beat Johns Creek Knights erase 10-point deficit to win 21-17

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Just three games into its season, Centennial had already suffered two heartbreaking losses.

Against Wheeler in the season opener, they led by 3 in the final minutes, but Wheeler would score in the final 10 seconds for the win. Then against Alpharetta last week, Centennial led by 14 entering the fourth quarter, only to see their lead squandered and the Raiders win on a field goal as time expired.

But on Friday night, Centennial reversed its fortunes and wound up on the winning end of another thrilling game, this time against Johns Creek.

Trailing 17-7 in the fourth quarter,

Centennial fought back for the lead, and eventual win, with two unanswered touchdowns to earn their first win of the season (1-3, 1-1).

“The past couple of weeks have been heartbreaking,” Centennial head coach Michael Perry said. “But we knew good things were going to happen, and we knew eventually we would be on the right side of things.”

“I’m super proud of the kids and the coaches,” Perry said. “The kids showed a lot of heart. They faced so much adversity early on and I’m proud of how they responded.”

The response came in the fourth after Johns Creek opened the quarter with a touchdown pass to go ahead 17-7.

The Knights’ ensuing drive was capped off with a Julian Nixon touchdown rush three minutes later to bring Centennial to within one score.

Johns Creek’s offense, which accumulated over 400 yards in the game, drove to the Knight’s 31-yard line but faced a fourth-and-1 with under a minute to go. With the game on the line, the Gladiators’ shotgun snap sailed over the head of Williams who was tackled for a major loss.

The Knights then ran out the clock for Perry’s first win as a head coach.

“It was a great night,” Perry said. “I think a lot of people really cut loose and enjoyed themselves after the win.”

Perry said receiver Blane Mason had an outstanding game, and he was pleased with his defense’s performance.

The Knights’ defense did allow over 400 yards from Johns Creek (1-3, 1-1), 375 coming off quarterback Zach Gibson.

“We’re moving the ball which is encouraging,” Johns Creek head coach Matt Helmerich said. “We have a lot of playmakers but we’re not getting the touchdown or first downs when we need it. We had another game where we have more total yards and didn’t pull out the victory.”

Helmerich was pleased in his defense’s performance that held Centennial’s fast-tempo, air-raid offense to just three scores.

“We lined up and played hard on defense,” he said. “We just missed a few players here and there.”

Even with the loss, Helmerich said he has seen improvement each week.

“When we get better, we are going to be a really good team,” he said.

The game was the inaugural Johns Creek Veterans Memorial.

Centennial plays again on the road against Cambridge (0-4, 0-2) this week while Johns Creek will travel to play Northview (0-3, 0-1).

Milton teams take titles in cross country tourney Boys varsity team places 7 runners in the top eight

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Fulton County cross-country championship host Milton captured wins in five of the six competitions at the Sept. 16 meet, including team wins for boys and girls varsity.

The boys varsity team placed all seven of its runners in the top eight, earning a perfect score for the fifth time in program history.

The team was led by defending state champion Sam Bowers who won the individual title ahead of teammates Nicholas Yanek, Michael Malkowski, Ryan Beitzell and Samuel Milton.

The team average of 16:59 was faster than any individual winning time in the Fulton County championships from 2007-16.

Cambridge placed second, 44 points behind Milton, in the boys varsity race.

The Bears were led by Jack Filan who placed sixth.

Northview and Blessed Trinity also

placed runners in the top-10, with Northview and BT placing third and fourth respectively in team scores.

Johns Creek placed fifth and Roswell finished sixth.

Milton captured another individual title and team win in the girls varsity race.

Led by individual winner Abby Rindt, the Lady Eagles placed six runners in the top 10 to capture their second straight team win. Taylor Cushman, Faith Wagner, Annier Gallagher and Emily Bowers all scored for Milton.

Cambridge secured another podium finish with its girls varsity team placing second. Ashley Sechrest led the Lady Bears with a fourth-place finish.

Blessed Trinity placed three runners in the top-15 to finish third in team scores, 11 points ahead of Johns Creek.

Roswell placed fifth, with Idi Martinez placing 16th for the Lady Hornets.

Though Northview’s Sarika Temme-Bapat placed fifth, Northview placed sixth in team scores.

Class 7A Milton 28, Etowah 20 — Milton improved to 3-1 under first-year head coach Adam Clack with a close victory over Etowah (3-2) Friday night.

Milton used three touchdowns from quarterback Jordan Yates, including a reception for a score, and a strong performance from its defense to notch the win.

Etowah drove inside Milton territory in the final minute but came up short on a fourth-and-7 to seal the Milton win.

Lanier 15, Lambert 6 — For the fourth-straight year, Lanier got the better of Lambert in a battle of the Longhorns.

Lambert couldn’t find the end zone all night and had to settle for two field goals from Bryce Christensen. Multiple turnovers, including two interceptions,

allowed Lanier to hold a 13-6 lead at the half.

Neither offense could find the scoreboard in the second half, but an intentional grounding call in the end zone against Lambert in the final two minutes gave Lanier a safety and 15-6 win.

Duluth 42, Forsyth Central 41 (OT) — Forsyth Central had its potential first win in nearly a year slip away when a late Duluth touchdown and Bulldogs’ missed PAT in overtime proved the difference in a thriller.

Central trailed 27-21 midway through the third quarter before two rushing touchdowns put the Bulldogs up by 8 points late in the fourth.

Duluth responded with a score in the final minute and completed a pass on the 2-point conversion to force overtime.

In the overtime period, the Bulldogs scored on a rushing touchdown, but the PAT was blocked.

Duluth’s 3-yard rushing score and made PAT secured the win for the Wildcats.

North Forsyth 58, Pickens 35 —

Quarterback Hogan Dykes connected with Ridge Polk for the Bears’ sole score of the game midway through the third quarter.

Pope’s offense averaged just 8.6 points per game entering the contest.

Chattahoochee 21, North Atlanta 14 — Chattahoochee remained unbeaten (2-0) in region play with another close win Friday night against previously unbeaten North Atlanta. For the third straight game, a late interception sealed the Cougars’ win.

The Cougars led 13-0 entering the fourth quarter thanks to a passing and rushing touchdown from quarterback Jack Corrigan, but North Atlanta cut the lead with a touchdown with nine minutes remaining in the game.

Hooch responded with a 79-yard touchdown pass from Corrigan and a 2-point conversion, but the Warriors quickly cut the lead to 21-14 with six minutes remaining.

With 1:21 left, Hooch forced an interception from Andrew Thomas to seal the win. North Atlanta’s defense had allowed just 14 points in three games this season entering the night.

Blessed Trinity 31, Hart Co. 7 — Blessed Trinity earned a second straight lopsided win over Hart County Friday night, and it could have been a bigger margin.

The Titans had three turnovers inside the red zone, but scored 31 unanswered points after trailing 7-0 to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Nadella says he found Christianity compelling because of its inclusiveness.

“I was especially drawn to the Gospel of Luke. Luke often contradicts what he says,” Nadella said.

Nadella was so intrigued by Luke he wrote his dissertation on Luke which became a book, “Dialogue Not Dogma: Many Voices in the Gospel of Luke.”

“What Luke does is promote discussions about multiple ideologies, views and politics. That was his world in the 1st century. So it is today,” Nadella said.

“Luke’s gospel offers people on the margins of society a place at the table as well,” he said. “Luke is a champion of the underdog. That is why he is appealing to me.”

That thought – and book – struck a chord with Wagner as well.

In their trip through India, Nadella

introduced to a worship service at the Syrian Orthodox Church. Visiting such eastern churches and worshiping at them had a broadening effect on Wagner.

“So here is Christian tradition in the East that is more than a thousand years old. It’s an entirely different perspective. They just lump Catholics and Protestants together as westerners,” Wagner said.

Wagner recently had Nadella give a sermon at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church where he preached about Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan who stopped to give aid to a stranger and cared for him.

Jesus said “love thy neighbor as thyself,” and used the Samaritan as the exemplar when asked the question, “But who is my neighbor?”

It is anyone who is in need and whom we can help. Just as we do with those suffering from the hurricanes Harvey and Irma, no one stops to ask who needs help. We simply must render it.
