Ralls County Resale Opens David Whitley recently opened a resale store at 414 South Main Street in New London. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” said David who follows in the footsteps of his grandparents and an uncle who had resale stores in New London and Hannibal. David grew up in New London and can remember when Main Street was lined with stores. Opening his store is his hope that “New London will get up and going again.” Ralls County Resale has a large open display area and a shop in the back. David has brought together a variety of items for the consumer, both found items and those he has crafted himself. “My favorite thing is making things back there and bringing them up front and selling them,” he said with a smile. The store carries a wide variety of items. There is some used furniture, household items and a few antiques. “It helps young people who are just starting out,” he said. There are a lot of items that people now refer to as “recycling” items. David prefers the term “primitive recycling” since he refurbishes and refinishes some pieces and makes benches, cabinets, tables and chairs from discarded pieces of furniture and old pieces of wood. He also makes furniture out of logs which have turned out to be popular and are soon sold out. There is a kerosene lantern in the window that David has converted into a lamp. Scattered throughout are floral arrangements in hand-crafted birdhouses, old tool boxes and watering cans. The store is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; and they are closed on Sunday.
