Paris Rural Fire Department members teach fire safety to elementary students

There will be an OATS Meal and Music Show at the Madison Community Center, on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 5-6:30 p.m., followed by music by local residents. All donations will go towards a match for an OATS bus.

TRICK OR TREAT FOR CANNED FOODS

The Paris High School FFA, FBLA, and Student Council have teamed up to put on a canned food drive during the week of Oct. 14-18. The officers of these organizations will be hosting a “Trick or Treat for Canned Foods” by dressing in costumes and knocking on doors between 5-7 p.m. on Oct. 17. If you are not home the evening of Oct. 17, you may donate by leaving your canned food donations on your front porch.

Government shut down will not stop the Halloween lights to shine in Paris

tion of what would Jacquie think or what would Jacquie do. No obstacle, even a little government shut down would stop her, so that is just what this group is doing, they are not stopping. Instead, they are making it an opportunity to make a difference. Their annual Halloween walk will be held at the Paris fairgrounds near the site of where the barn will be built. Mark Twain and Paris Patriots 4-H clubs will be taking donations to be used toward Jacquie’s barn fund in exchange for tricks and treats. Bring the family out in their Halloween costumes with treat buckets this Friday and Saturday to see the lights, hear the music and enjoy an evening walk through the campground. Open from 5-10 p.m. Confession stand with hot chocolate, coffee, hot dogs and brownies will also be available. Jacquie’s Crew includes the Martin, Dodge, Ransdell, DeOrnellis, Stuart, Crain, Mitchell, and Mason families.

MADISON FIRE DEPARTMENT BBQ

The Madison West Monroe Fire Department will hold a 1st Annual Whole Hog Barbecue, on Sunday, Oct. 20, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., at the Madison Fire Department. The menu includes: Whole Hog, BBQ or Plain, Hashbrown Casserole, Baked Beans, Slaw, Homemade Pie, Tea, Lemonade or Coffee. Adults $7 and Children under 6 $3.

Jacquie’s crew refuses to let the government shut down stop them for the Annual Halloween Walk. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Mark Twain Lake, recently announced the cancellation of the Annual Halloween Walk scheduled to be held at the Indian Creek Recreation Area on Oct. 18 and 19. Jacquie’s crew has formed a Plan B that they think may be even better for the community. Out of frustration comes opportunity. An opportunity to help build a barn. Monroe County 4-H clubs have been fundraising for two years to build a dream. A dream of a show barn at the Paris Fairgrounds in memory of Jacquie Stuart. Jacquie was a very influential 4-H youth specialist that dreamed of good things for our local youth. When the campers found out about the possibility of the govern-

ment shut down causing the walk to be cancelled, they started talking about how disappointed Jacquie would have been. Jacquie loved the Halloween walk and she encouraged her friends to join her in the annual event with the dream of someday winning the prize of best decorated camp sight. Joy Dodge said, “five years ago, she decided that we needed to participate in the best kept secret in Monroe County! We started small, but each year more was added to our collection, along with new members to our camping group.” Since then, the crew has been making the annual trek to Indian Creek with truckloads of decorations. In her memory, they have continued to enjoy decorating and competing for the win, always with thoughts and conversa-

Ralls SWCD Nov. 1, Informational Meeting Postponed Due to the government shutdown, the Ralls County Soil & Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors has announced the postponement of the informational meeting scheduled for Nov. 1, 2013. The meeting will be rescheduled for a later date and land owners and operates will be notified by checking the local newspapers and postcards will also be mailed.
