Department News Greetings from the Department of Psychology!

We have some exciting news from our department that we would like to share with you. We hope you enjoy our annual graduate alumni newsletter and come to visit Boone soon.

Drs. Lindsay Masland and Twila Wingrove recently received an external grant from the Association of Psychological Science (APS) to fund a project entitled, "Translating the Science of Mindset to the Psychology Classroom: An Exploration of the Active Components and Boundary Conditions of a Mindset Intervention.”

This grant is part of a new APS initiative to enhance the scientific Dr. Wingrove (left) Dr. Masland (right) rigor of research concerning teaching effectiveness in Psychology classrooms. Together with other faculty members in the department, Drs. Masland and Wingrove will explore the effects of a motivational intervention on the engagement and performance of students in Psychology classes. Past research has indicated that interventions that encourage students to view their intelligence as a capacity amenable to growth and improvement, as opposed to a stable, fixed capacity, show enhanced performance in the classroom. This grant is a cross-program collaboration (i.e., School Psychology and General Experimental) that will fund an exploration of the contextual factors that mediate and moderate this demonstrated effect.

Fall 2016 Department News Continued…

Dr. Bob Hill was appointed ASU Ombudsperson in August of 2016. The Ombuds Office provides an independent, confidential environment for faculty, staff and students of the Appalachian community to discuss campus related concerns or problems. The Ombuds Office reports, nominally, to the Office of the Provost of Appalachian State University. The Ombud is a neutral person who is able to help visitors acquire perspective and think about and assess a range of alternatives. Meetings remain confidential, and clients are able to discuss challenges, consider options and learn about relevant resources and procedures, with an objective, neutral party. The Ombud holds the identity and communications with those seeking assistance in confidence. For more information see: http://ombuds.appstate.edu Dr. Shawn Bergman was recently appointed the department’s Office of Research Consultation. The overarching goal and purpose of the Office of Research Consultation (ORC), a unit within the Office of Research, is to help faculty researchers better use data as a part of App States strategic plan.

The ORC provides input in the design and execution of research to faculty who are engaged in research across the university. This input includes participating in the development of various operations and procedures for grant and contract submissions. The ORC also provides guidance and resources to help faculty with the collection, verification, management, and analysis of quantitative/biostatistical/structured and qualitative/ unstructured data using a variety of software packages, such as Excel, SAS, SPSS, Stata, and Mplus. While the Office of Research Consultation will give priority to faculty who are working on externally funded research, preparing external grant and contract submissions, or working on research projects that have the potential to lead to external funding, it provides resources and assistance to faculty members working on non-funded research.

In addition, the Office of Research Consultation will be looking to host and sponsor on-campus events, such as workshops and symposiums, on various issues related to data management and analysis. Its website provides a list of ever-growing resources for faculty to utilize to help them with data preparation, collection, management, and analysis. Dr. Lisa Emery, an associate professor in the department of Psychology at Appalachian State, has received a three-year Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) grant from the National Institutes of Health. The grant, totaling $270,375, is to support Dr. Emery’s research regarding the relationship between mood and memory. Dr. Emery’s research particularly focuses on the mood and memory of older adults.

According to Dr. Emery, older people tend to report higher happiness as they age, on average. “My hypothesis” Dr. Emery says, “is one of the reasons is that as people age, they forget a lot of the specific negative details about bad things that have happened to them and learn to reframe some those negative experiences in a more positive light.” To test this, Dr. Emery plans to conduct three surveys of up to 150 adults ranging from those in their early 20’s to those over 65.

Dr. Paul Fox on Phased Retirement “How is phased retirement going, Paul?

Now in my 47th year at ASU, I felt that the university needed a break.

With phased retirement, faculty can teach half time for half of their salary for up to three years. Moreover, they have no administrative duties. Well, retirement isn’t what I anticipated more than three years ago. Cheryl and I adopted Charley Rose who is just about three. We had her since she was 7 months old. What a joy she has been. I have never laughed so much! So far retirement has not been bad at all. I have more time to spend with Charley Rose.

During my first year of phased retirement I worked with Dr. Wingrove in the Legal Psychology Lab and taught Forensic Psychology, Applied Behavior Management, and the Teaching of Psychology. I know I will miss teaching and working with Dr. Wingrove tremendously. I think I will beg Cheryl (a full time lecturer in the department) and other faculty to let me take their classes occasionally. I’d probably teach a class a semester for free if they’d let me.”

Dr. Skip Beck on Phased Retirement “Phased retirement has been wonderful although I have not had any free time.

What phased retirement has done is to free me to concentrate on the parts of my job that I love, working with students and research. I spend much of my days writing a book on the Watson-Albert saga and preparing a number of articles for publication, projects that I never had time for previously.”

Fall 2016 Student Spotlight Stephanie Lichiello received second place in the 2015-16 annual 3-Minute Thesis Competition. Participants explain their research in standard non-disciplinary English to a general audience in 3 minutes with the help of only one static PowerPoint slide. Her research focused on an assessment model that the Assessment, Support, and Counseling (ASC) Center created in 2012. The protocol developed has been used with more than 150 students who endorsed suicidal or homicidal thoughts.

Alex Kirk won the Graduate School Outstanding Thesis Award in the Social Science category. Under the mentorship of Dr. Kurt Michael, Alex assisted with a number of school-based mental health initiatives and research projects. One of those projects culminated in his thesis research entitled “Dose response effects of CBT [cognitive behavioral therapy] in a rural school mental health program.” Alex has submitted his thesis research for publication and it is bound to have substantial impact. He continues to advance our understanding of mental health interventions as a doctoral candidate at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Dea Kamberaj presented a symposium titled “The Impact of Social Media on Human Resources Activities” at the 13th Annual Southern Management Association Meeting. Dea worked with Dr. Shawn Bergman and Dr. Jacqui Bergman to present findings based on various research topics focusing on social media and recruitment. Specifically, Dea was interested in examining the legal and ethical implications of recruiting through online job sources and disparate impact and diversity. The meeting, which was held in sunny St. Petersburg, Florida, brought together top students, academics and professionals with a passion for science management. Dea says “the conversation and discussion post symposium was very lively and interesting,” and that she enjoyed hearing different perspectives on the social media and HR issue. Additionally, Dea says that the lack of research on the impact of social media on various HR activities made this research even more interesting.

Casher Belinda and Kate Lesniak are working with the HR & Analytics Team to further research regarding the use of social media in the hiring process. Casher and Kate will oversee four research teams under the guidance of Dr. Shawn Bergman. One team is examining how organizations’ decisions to highlight their Corporate Social Responsibility practices on their corporate websites and through social media impacts job seekers’ organizational perceptions. A second study will work to identify what specific information on a candidate’s social media page (gender, marital status, and sexual orientation) affects the Continued on p. 5

The third research team seeks to further understand the impacts of Social Networking Sites and perceived hireability of job candidates. Specifically, this team will look at differences in hireability between individuals with differing degrees of social networking site use and presence. Can a person’s choice of words on social networking sites, on his or her resume or cover letter help predict his or her future job performance? This is the main question the Text Analytics research team is looking to answer.

School Psychology student Erin Knight (with her mentor Dr. Pam Kidder-Ashley) presented her thesis research at the International School Psychology Conference in Amsterdam in July 2016. Their poster summarized a collaborative schoolbased project aimed at examining cross-generational continuity in parenting practices in a low-SES, Appalachian community. Their research questions included (1) Is there a relationship between the parenting styles that parents report using and the styles they report their parents to have employed? (2) Are these relationships strongest for same-gender pairs? and (3) Do demographic and personality characteristics moderate these relationships?

Fall 2016 Randomly Selected Alumnus Spotlight Ashley McKinney (2005 Clinical Psychology Graduate & Clinical Supervisor to current students) Ashley began working at a mental health center in Boone as a psychological associate in 2005 immediately after finishing the program. There she provided individual, family, and group therapy, mostly to children and adolescents, and conducted psychological evaluations. She also started a school-based therapy program in which she treated children in six different schools throughout the county. Ashley met the love of her life at the mental health center (an employee in a different department, not a client!) and got married in 2006. In 2012 she published her master’s thesis with Will Canu,"Distinct ADHD symptoms clusters differentially associated with personality traits" in the Journal of Attention Disorders. In 2011, the mental health center ceased operation due to lack of funds, and Ashley was hired as a trauma-focused cognitive behavior therapy (TFCBT) clinician with the local Children's Advocacy Center. She was rostered and certified in TF-CBT and now serves as a supervisor to our students. She is about to embark on owning her own business conducting therapy and psychological evaluations. She has two young children with her husband, who is also a therapist. Ashley is grateful to live in the beautiful mountains of Boone and occasionally run in to former psychology professors.

Erin Dobbins Erin Dobbins is currently employed in the Survey Research Division at RTI International, an independent nonprofit that provides research and technical services to diverse clients. Situated in the Research Triangle Park, RTI International aims to “improve the human condition by turning knowledge into practice.” RTI has produced research for cancer treatments, sustainable energy solutions, and more.

Erin’s role in the Survey Research Division is to provide a variety of research solutions to clients by designing and implementing surveys. The SRD is highly methods focused, providing the complicated statistical methodology that clients are not equipped to provide themselves. “It is not everyone's cup of tea,” says Erin, “some people miss the focus on substantive research questions (as opposed to methodological research questions), but I have found it to be a great fit.”

Currently, Erin is involved in three projects for the Health Surveys and Registries work group at the SRD. Two of these projects are a part of the Consumer Assessment of Health Care Providers and Services program, which measures and quantifies consumer experiences with healthcare. Erin is specifically working on projects regarding in-center hemodialysis and outpatient and ambulatory surgery. She is also working on a survey project for the Chronic Effects of Neurotrauma Consortium, an organization that provides neurotrauma research for the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

Alongside these projects, Erin is also continuing to pursue her academic interests. She is currently working on revising her master’s thesis for publication as a part of the SRD’s mentoring program. In addition, she is continuing to further her education by attending workshops and classes related to survey design and implementation. In the near future she plans to enroll in the Survey Methodology Graduate Certificate Program at UNC’s Odum Institute.

New Faculty Dr. Kemp Ellington “I graduated from Appalachian State with a B.S. in Psychology in 1999, and went on to earn my Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from North Carolina State University in 2006. As a graduate student I worked with several different organizations, including the U.S. Department of Labor, the NC State Highway Patrol, and the U.S. Special Operations Command. After completing graduate school, I accepted a faculty position in the Psychology Department at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago, IL. Things were going great in Chicago, however in 2014 I learned that there was an open position in the Walker College of Business at App State, as part of the graduate program in Industrial/ Organizational Psychology and Human Resource Management (IOHRM). The opportunity to return to my alma mater was something I could not pass up, so when offered the position, I was thrilled to accept! Coming back to Appalachian and to Boone definitely felt like coming home. Within the IOHRM program, I teach courses in Training and Development, as well as Compensation. My research focuses on performance management, training and development, and work analysis/design, and often incorporates a multilevel approach. The first year back at App went great, and it has been a pleasure to work with such exceptional colleagues and students. I am incredibly proud to be a part of such an outstanding graduate program.�

Fall 2016 Dr. Yalcin Acikgoz Dr. Yalcin Acikgoz is an assistant professor of I/O Psychology in the Psychology Department. He is a Turkish national, who began his professional career in the Turkish Army as a second lieutenant after graduating from Turkish Military Academy with a BS in Systems Engineering. After serving in various positions in the Army, including fires team leader at a mechanized brigade, a deployment in Afghanistan, and cadet team leader in Turkish Military Academy; he decided to take on a different type of challenge and pursue an academic career in the field of I/O psychology. This led him to his second trip to the USA (the first one was for Basic Officers Leaders Course in Fort Sill, OK), where he pursued an MA degree in I/O Psychology in Appalachian State University. After graduating with an MA degree in 2013, he went back to Turkey and assumed a manpower analyst position in the Turkish General Staff HQ. Simultaneously, he began his Ph.D. education in 2013 on I/O psychology in Middle East Technical University. In 2016, he earned his Ph.D. and quit his job in the Turkish Military to join Appalachian State University.

Dr. Acikgoz has a variety of research interests including employee recruitment and job search, applications of social media in human resources, and impression management in the workplace. His main research interest is on employee recruitment, and he is currently working on developing a comprehensive model of employee recruitment and job search which combines employer and employee behaviors in the pursuit of filling a position. He is interested in teaching both introductory and advanced courses in the areas of job analysis and performance appraisal, staffing, research methods, and statistics. Aside from his studies, Dr. Acikgoz enjoys spending time with his wife and his daughter in the beautiful mountains of Boone. He is also a big fan of Fenerbahce, a Turkish soccer team.

Dr. Jackie Hersh Dr. Jackie Hersh is a new faculty member in the Psychology Department affiliated with the Clinical program as Director of the ASU Psychology Clinic. Dr. Hersh earned her bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Sociology from Brandeis University in 2005 and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Duke University in 2014. Prior to arriving at ASU, she completed her predoctoral clinical internship at New York University School of Medicine/Bellevue Hospital Center and completed a postdoctoral clinical research fellowship at Harvard University where she directed treatment implementation and dissemination studies, led MATCH-ADTC clinical trainings, and supervised clinicians in schools and community clinics. Dr. Hersh has enjoyed conducting assessments and evaluations with children, adolescents, and adults, as well as individual and group therapy in outpatient clinics and inpatient hospital settings; she has received specialized training in Family, CognitiveBehavioral, Dialectical-Behavior, and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy. Dr. Hersh’s research interests also center on evidence-based treatment, particularly in dissemination and understanding factors that influence treatment effectiveness as well as developing innovative ways to enhance mental health interventions and improve outcomes for underserved populations. Dr. Hersh has greatly missed North Carolina and is looking forward to relocating to Boone where she hopes to de-thaw from several historic winters in Boston, take many hikes and test out new activities like skiing, and maybe finally learn how to ride a bike!

Fall 2016 Tribute to Dr. Stan Aeschleman Written by Dr. Paul Fox After completing his undergraduate training at Western Illinois University (1968), Stan served two years as a military policeman in Bangkok, Thailand.

Upon earning his doctorate from the University of Kentucky in learning and physiological psychology in 1977, Stan taught at the School of Science at IUPUI. While there, perhaps spurred by his time in Thailand, Stan and his wife, Ellen, journeyed to Auckland, New Zealand for two years where he served as a visiting professor. Not long after he arrived at ASU as associate professor in 1989, the adventuresome couple moved to Malaysia to teach for a year in a cooperative program sponsored by Indiana University.

Back in the Department, Stan’s administrative skills quickly blossomed. In 1996, he served as Director of Graduate Studies for our department and became Department Chair in 1998. I cannot sufficiently laud Stan’s contributions to the evolution of our department. The results of his effort to promote fair and objective evaluation protocols for our faculty became a university model. Naturally, his exemplary tenure as chair soon encouraged administration to abscond with him in 2003 and Stan became Interim Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences. The next year he was selected to be the Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. He failed at the “interim” part of the title and became the real thing from late 2004 to 2009. Trying to improve on the earlier “interim” title, Stan consented to return to the position as “interim” Provost in 2014 after the person who replaced him when he stepped down departed. I would certainly hate to follow Stan’s tenure in any position.

Stan was a most appreciated Provost and Vice Chancellor for his objectivity, his ability to negotiate for change, his foresight, and his ability to work smoothly with both administration and faculty. The General Education Curriculum was championed by Stan as he questioned the efficacy of traditional undergraduate core instruction. I think that a personal perk for Stan’s administrative contributions was the potential for travel throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. Along with the Director of the Office of International Education and Development, and often accompanied by Ellen, he supported the development of new satellite campuses, established new faculty/student exchanges, and reviewed the efficacy of existing international programs. In appreciation of his contributions, ASU established the Aeschleman Distinguished Professorate in Psychology in his honor. The professorate is presently used to hire and support nationally established faculty in the area of Applied Behavior Analysis.

In 2015, Stan and Ellen moved to Oriental, NC where they designed their retirement home for their beloved dogs and cats and where they entertain their two children and a growing bevy of grandchildren. The inveterate adventurers continue their travels — especially to St. Louis Cardinal games and to the Caribbean Islands where they scuba dive and tap a brewski now and then.

Fall 2016 Farewell from Dr. Anderson I have enjoyed my time at App greatly. Over the last three years I mentored four graduate students, two in the Clinical program and two in experimental. Three of the four pursued Master's theses and all defended their theses successfully. I also mentored two honors students. I've had an active lab with many graduate and undergraduate participants. Last summer I received a grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Institute for Education Sciences to develop and evaluate a comprehensive, school-based intervention for children with autism spectrum disorders. In collaboration with two colleagues at other universities, I have developed the intervention and conducted focus groups with teachers, parents, and school administrators to assess perceived feasibility. I will begin an experimental evaluation of the intervention this fall. While at App I started APS4Kids (Appalachian Psychological Services for Children and Families). APS4Kids was housed at the Psychology Department's Clinic but was a separate program supervised solely by me and staffed by myself and, across the two and 1/2 years it was operating, four graduate students (one in experimental, three in clinical). We provided assessment and intervention services for children and families with a focus on disruptive behavior. The clinic served neurotypical children exhibiting disruptive behavior and children with autism spectrum disorders exhibiting challenging behavior such as self-injury or aggression. We also worked with a number of children with autism who were struggling with anxiety or depression. I left App at the end of the spring semester and moved to the Boston area. In July, I assumed a new role as Director of the National Autism Center and Vice-President of Applied Behavior Analysis at the May Institute. I will miss teaching and the academic setting however I am looking forward to the opportunities this new role will afford me. I will lead a research team investigating interventions for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and will provide leadership to the organization in the support of individuals with behavior challenges. I will continue mentoring the next generation of researchers and practitioners (a role that I love) through supervision of pre-doctoral interns, post-doctoral fellows, and undergraduate and graduate students conducting research or clinical practicum at the May Institute. Saying goodbye to my colleagues, many of whom are great friends, to the awesome students here at App, and to my beloved mountains is going to be difficult but, in the oh so eloquent words of Black Flag (a fantastic punk band of my generation), "It's time, time, time."

ASC Center Many youth in the High Country experience depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns and youth in this region report suicidal thoughts and behaviors at rates higher than state and national averages. However, there are a number of challenges associated with seeking mental health care, as the High Country has a limited number of qualified mental health professionals, and even fewer who provide specialized treatment for children and adolescents. Other common obstacles include transportation problems, negative stereotypes about mental health care, and financial limitations. With these concerns in mind, ASU and local school districts created an interdisciplinary team to address mental health as a major public health priority in rural western North Carolina.

Fall 2016 The Assessment, Support, and Counseling (ASC) Center was developed to reduce or eliminate the impact of mental health symptoms on students’ learning experiences.

The ASC Center is a partnership between Appalachian State University (ASU) and local school districts designed to provide school mental health services to students in the High Country. The ASC Center was first developed and implemented during the 2006-2007 academic year by Psychology Professor Kurt Michael and Angela Quick, then the principal of Watauga High School. Since then, ASC has expanded to provide school mental health services in three western North Carolina school districts, including Alleghany, Ashe, and Watauga County Schools. Associate Professor JP Jameson joined the ASC Team in 2011 and now oversees the operation in the Alleghany Schools.

The ASC Center provides school-based mental health services to address a number of concerns, including depression, academic difficulties, anxiety, behavior problems, and suicidal thoughts or behaviors. The most common methods of treatment are individual therapy, consultation, family work, and groups. We also provide crisis intervention, teacher consultation, mental health prevention/outreach, professional development, and research.

The primary goals of the partnership between Appalachian State University and the local schools are to: 1) provide access to high quality, supervised mental health services to children and families regardless of their ability to pay; 2) produce a steady stream of qualified school mental health professionals who may join the regional workforce; and 3) conduct research that informs effective school mental health practices.

The ASC Center model includes built-in program evaluation components. Each student’s symptoms are monitored throughout the course of treatment, providing information about the effectiveness of treatment for that student and for the program overall. The results from the ASC Center suggest that the majority of students who receive treatment experience clinically significant improvement in mental health symptoms.

Additionally, ASC Center services are associated with improved attendance, stabilized or improved academic performance, and stabilized or decreased discipline referrals. Furthermore, these results are achieved with minimal impact on instruction time.

Dr. Will Canu’s Experience at Keele University & Sabbatical “During the Fall 2015 semester I had the luck to go to Keele University and teach as the faculty member for our "Psychology in Staffordshire" program. Eight Appalachian students participated in the program, taking a couple courses from me (Contemporary Issues in Psychology and a seminar called Psychosocial Stressors and Psychopathology) and a couple more in Psychology or other disciplines. The semester and general orientation to coursework is different at Keele, with shorter teaching terms, fewer meetings during a week, and more emphasis on independent work on the part of students, or at least students in the upper years. This fit well for both of these courses, at least from my standpoint. I have to say that I especially enjoyed teaching the Psychosocial Stressors class, as "regular" Keele U. psychology students enrolled in it Continued on p. 13

Fall 2016 along with the Appalachian cohort, and ensuing class discussions on things like the psychosocial stress of divorce, military deployments, and becoming a parent revealed interesting crosscultural differences.

In addition to teaching, I interacted a lot with the psychology faculty at Keele, in official capacities (e.g., figuring out how to structure my exams or collaborate with a "second reader" in their system) and unofficial ones, as well (e.g., meeting informally with several of the faculty to discuss our different or mutual research interests, attending department functions, etc.). Overall, I found the School of Psychology to be dynamic place filled with serious researchers who are very dedicated to the education of their undergraduates and graduate students alike... A lot like ASU! The Keele campus is beautiful... again, it matches or even surpasses our own in this regard, and I will miss little things like the weekly Tuesday farmer's market that happened just outside the student union. I also can endorse the Stoke-on-Trent area as a really interesting and enjoyable place in itself, with lots of nearby attractions from Tutor-age manors to the Stoke "Potters" Premier League soccer team.

This Spring 2016 term I completed an off-campus scholarly assignment (OCSA, or our equivalent of a "sabbatical") in Lille, France, where I was a visiting scholar at Lille University and more specifically with the SCA (Sciences Cognitives et sciences Affectives) Lab at the Lille 3 campus. I made connections with faculty at Lille through Dr. Cynthia Anderson, who has friends at West Virginia University who have behavioral orientations to intervention that match the applied behavioral perspective that characterizes the SCALab. The mutual interest in my visiting had to do with expanding their activity related to ADHD, my main research area. I participated in the SCALab during the term, attending meetings and student presentations, giving feedback on a variety of topics. My most interesting work at Lille 3 was with Vinca Riviére, who has worked quite a lot in the area of developmental disorders. Working with her gave me an appreciation of a very large cultural difference between the United States and France with regards to assessment, intervention, and simple understanding of ADHD. There are very basic questions about ADHD at a societal level that remain to be answered and considered in the French psychological literature, including the level of support that parents and children and adolescents experience, transition from primary to secondary schooling and beyond, and access to care that is empirically supported. The groundwork has been laid to implement studies to answer some of these questions, and I look forward to continuing this collaboration. While in France, I have also had the chance to visit with other scholars, notably Saskia Van der Oord and Dieter Baeyens at KU Leuven in Belgium. I visited their campus to give a presentation on ADHD in emerging adulthood, speaking to a roomful of faculty and graduate students. Drs. Vand der Oord and Baeyens are both pursuing projects on ADHD, and we discussed mutual interests and possibilities for collaboration in the future. Finally, this OCSA has offered me time to work on my own research, and I have completed several manuscripts that have been on my "back burner" for some time and had the opportunity to think about my program of research and how that will move forward in the coming years. I am extremely grateful for the support of ASU and the Psychology Department, in particular, in having this OCSA and international teaching experience, and am looking forward to rejoining the department!”

Fall 2016 Clinical Training Opportunities Central Regional Hospital (CRH), located in Butner, NC, is one of three NC state psychiatric hospitals. It is operated by the Division of State-Operated Healthcare Facilities (DSOHF) within the North Carolina Department of Health & Human Services. The hospital provides psychiatric and medical care to adults and adolescents in 25 counties in the central region of the North Carolina. CRH also serves children ages 11 and under from all 100 counties of North Carolina.

High Country Community Health (HCCH), a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), with a site in Boone, NC provides “quality, patient centered, culturally appropriate, affordable and compassionate care that serves the whole person.� This newly developed partnership bodes well for the training of students in integrated care models as well as for the provision of urgently needed services to the local community.

The ADHD Clinic at University of North Carolina-Greensboro (UNCG) is a clinical specialty service in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies within the School of Health and Human Sciences.

The ADHD Clinic offers comprehensive state-of-the-art assessments and evidence-based and treatment services to meet the multiple needs of college students, primarily transitional-aged, with ADHD. The Virginia Institute of Autism in Charlottesville, Virginia helps people overcome the challenges of autism through innovative, evidence-based programs in education and outreach. Specialized training in autism spectrum disorders is especially important for rural areas as children living in rural areas are more likely to be delayed in receiving a diagnosis of autism than are children in suburban or urban areas and also are less likely to have access to intervention.
