Architecture is about inhabitation at its core, how people can and will use the built space. For me, an architect has to envision, predict and master plan this inhabitation. His job is not to create the space soley in his vision, but to consider many and all perspectives and distill a refined vision for how habitation will occur. I aspire to create for others, to create a space that works for all inhabitants, human and non-human. This has led to my exploration in what I like to call ‘Modern Modernism’. This portfolio is an exposition of my work that explores this idea of ‘Modern Modernism’ through many competitions, studio projects and other creative outlets

CONCEPT
MASSING STRATEGY
The Stacked Suburb is a take on multi-storey mixed use residential that aims to encompass the atmosphere and feel of a suburb in form that is more spatially efficient than the traditional suburb. This concept is implemented through a system of ‘front yards’ and ‘back yards’ that create a deeper sense of community in the building.

MASSING STRATEGY
The site is located at 300 Elm St. in Sudbury Ont. - this site is at a cross roads of two main roads in Sudbury (Elm + Regent St.). Included is a two floor commercial sector with a public pool and gym for the residents. The residential floors cater to young families with 3 and 2 bedroom condos as well as students with market rental for Laurentian University students.

A NEW HUB FOR ARTS AND CULTURE IN THE STRATFORD URBAN CORE

CASCADING PLANES

CONCEPT
Cascading Planes is a motion of architecture that draws from the basic concept of the natural flow of water. The Lake Laurentian Conservation Area site informed this concept through the three planes that represent the hills, lake and marsh. These three planes come through as the three planes of the building, with program flowing throughout.

IMPLEMENTATION
Through this concept the architecture of Cascading Planes has been implemented through design to flow both through program and form. In program, walls and adjoined spaces are used to design flow in pedestrian movement. Flow starts from the highest elevation of the building to the lower elevation. In form the planes of the roof and floors cascade, dropping 500mm per plane.

CONCEPT

Fleur De Nuit was conceived as an urban intervention that reimagines unused urban vacancies as a blooming flower of the night. During the day the space is used for a mundane purpose. But during the night the vacancy blooms and acts a well for night activity, in a previously unused space.
IMPLEMENTATION

The site we chose is a parking lot in Sudbury, Ont. that is used during the day, but left vacant during the night. This site provided prime locale for implementation of night life interventions. The structure of the seating as well as the lamps are designed to fold away during the day time, then bloom at night. Fleur De Nuit is a response to the potential of the 25h day.

Flour Mill District Museum
Art for All
STUDIO: ARCH2515 - DESIGN STUDIO 5 - NORTHERN BUILDING II
TYPE: Art Museum and Community Centre

SITE: Flour Mill District, Sudbury, ONT
TEAM: ALEX E. POLITO

CONCEPT
A project that aspires to create a space for all to enjoy across the socio-economic spectrum of the Flour Mill neighborhood. By redefining the museum as a primarily public space, with paid moments throughout; the people of the museum are the main focus. This allows the public population to be introduced and engaged with art, without the monetary barriers of a traditional museum.

IMPLEMENTATION
By breaking down the traditional paywalls of an art museum and allow the nonticketed public to visually and spatially interact with art inside the museum. This includes displaying art in non-ticketed areas through the use of interstitial art exhibits that change throughout the year. As well, public areas that allow transparency to the private art areas are designed into the floor plan.
