Ithasbeenanexcitingandchallenging startto2024ineducation

BeingMinisterofEducationisahuge privilegeandonethatIamembracing. Butthatsaid,it’snotthemostimportant jobineducation.Iwanttothankthe teachers,principalsandteacheraides thatareatthefrontlineofworkingwith ourchildren.

Theworktheydoeverydayinterms ofpreparingandshapingouryoung peoplefortheirfuturecareersandtheir participationinoureconomy,andintheir communities,andintheworld,should neverbeunderestimated.

MyjobasMinisteristosupportthem toprepareourchildrenforthefuture. Thatiswhywehavealreadybroughtin policiesaroundanhouradayorready, writingandmathsandgettingcellphonesoutofclassrooms.

ThereisasayinginteaoMāori-“Ittakesavillagetoraisea child”andreflectingonmyjourney,Iunderstandtheprofound impactthatacommunitycanhaveonourpersonalgrowth -especiallyourKaumātua.Theactionsofourtīpunagive usguidanceonhowtostructureourwaysofdoingthings. Forinstance,theytaughtmethateverythinghasamauri,a purpose.Sobemindful.Apenhasamauri,abookhasamauri

andmostimportantlyweallhaveamauri,wejustneedtofind whatoursisandfulfilit.

MyjourneyhereatHastingsBoys’HighSchoolhasprovided mewithopportunitiesthathavehelpedmedevelopintothe youngĀkinaManIamtoday.Overthepastfewyears,Ihave pushedmyselfoutofmycomfortzoneandintoenvironments thatIwasn’tusedto.Andbydoingso,Ihavebeenableto becomeabetterversionofmyself.FrombeingChairmanof theHastingsYouthCouncil,andhavinganInternposition representingHoungareamaraeontheTeHaarooTeKaahu BoardtomytimeatOutwardBound,Iamhonouredtohave learnedhowatrueleaderexecutestheimportantvaluesinlife whichinclude,dignity,respect,purpose,integrityandwhānau.
