Herefords are a multigenerational
passion
By Eileen McWilliam
H
erefords are a multigenerational passion for our family. We love their efficiency and docility and high quality carcass, they turn less grass into more meat and are the key to a profitable beef herd. Commercial pure Hereford herds are found throughout the country as they thrive under all farming conditions and extremes. Hereford bulls will also increase production in Angus commercial herds. The crossbred progeny grow and fatten more quickly and the heifers retained for breeding have increased milk, fertility, maternal characteristics and longevity. That is the beauty of hybrid vigour. It is well proven that crossbreeding with a Hereford bull will increase the profitability of a commercial beef operation. The heart and focus of the Te Taumata breeding programme is our cow herd. We are breeding for a moderate sized, long-sided, deep bodied, big ribbed, easy fleshing cow that will wean a heavy calf on our summer-dry, drought prone rolling hill country. Our cattle compete with sheep for grass so must have the constitution to convert low quality grass
