Ithasbeensaidthatprogress liesnotinenhancingwhatis,but inadvancingtowardswhatwill be.LudlowFarmsaredoingboth: diversifyingthewaytheyusetheir resourceswhileputtinginplace measuresthatwillmeetandtake advantageofthechallengesahead. Andtheyarebringingothersalongwith them.
In2011,Simon&LouWhitetookmatters intotheirownhands,startedbuilding on-farmwaterstoragetomake theirbusinessresilienttoweather challenges.Excesswinterfloodwater collectedduringthewintermonthsfills fourirrigationdams.Thestoredwater canthenbeusedinsummermonths forcropslikevegetables,wheat,barley,
hemp,andseeds.
Preciselymonitoringthesystemmeans itcanmaximiseefficiency–withlittle watergoingtowaste.
“Watersecurityprovidesbenefits beyondthe16percentreturnover 30years.We’veseenanimmediate 100percentliftinproduction comparedtolosingacropduringa dryspell.Thismeanswecansecure high-valuegrowingcontractsby ensuringconsistentcropsupplyto ourcustomers,”SimonWhitesaid. “Thisgivesuspeaceofmindthatour investmentsinthelandwillpayoff.” Itisforembracingforward-thinking practicesthatturnchallengesinto opportunitiesforsustainablegrowth

Theirstate-of-the-artseeddryerat Ludlow,co-fundedbyKānoaand supportedbyCentralHawke’sBay DistrictCouncil,offerstheregion’s farmersmoreoptionsfortackling climatechange.Itsupportsseed productionforAsianandEuropean markets,reducesrisks,andenables farmerstogrowhighervaluecrops withmorecontrol.Moreimportantly,it opensthedoorforotherlandownersto optimisetheirlanduseandadvance towardswhatwillbewithoptimism.
TheSpringFlingFestivalhas receiveda$10,000boostfromthe centralgovernment’sRegional EventsPromotionFund,administered byHawke’sBayTourism.
Thefundingwillexpandthefestival’s marketingreach,helpingpromote CentralHawke’sBaytoneighbouring regionsTararua,Manawatūand Wellington.MayorAlexWalker welcomedtheinvestment,sayingit supportslocalbusinessesandtourism, “thisfundinghelpsshareourhidden gemwithmorepeople,”shesaid. Runningfrom1Septemberthrough earlyNovember,thefestival showcasesthebestoftheregion.This year’slineupkicksoffwithWaipawa
MusicandDramaticSociety’s productionofTheWizardofOz.

OPENDAY:Onthe13thofMay,wehostedanexcitingandengagingOpenDay, welcomingagroupofeagerprimaryschoolstudentstoexperiencelifeinsecondary school.Theeventprovidedyounglearnerswiththeopportunitytostepintothe shoesofaCHBCstudent,providingafirsthandlookatwhattheirfutureeducation couldbelike.Throughouttheday,thestudentsparticipatedinaseriesof25-minute sessions,eachoneledbyadifferentdepartmentwithintheschool.Fromscience experimentstocreativeartsworkshops,thestudentshadatasteofwhatCHBC offers,gettinginvolvedininteractiveandexcitingactivitiesdesignedtosparktheir curiosityandpassionforlearning.

TheweekendofOctober17-19isadatetomarkinyour calendarsasOngaongavillageschoolanddistrict celebratesitsfounding150yearsago.
DennisSchawhasbeen presidentoftheOngaonga HistoricalSocietyforabout eightyears.HiswifeDebbieisalsoan enthusiasticmember.Manymembers ofthesocietyareontheorganizing committeeforthe150thcelebrations. Membersareallvolunteerswho spendmanyhoursmaintainingand upgradingtheOngaongaMuseum, alongwiththeColesBuildingfurther downBridgeStreet.
Dennisisthegreat-great-grandson ofSamuelandHarrietFletcherthe districtsearliestsettlerswhoarrivedin 1862.TheynamedtheirlandPendleHill, afteraplaceinLancashire,Englandof thesamename.
Aportionoftheirhomestead, PendleHousewasgiftedbyIanand MyrtleSchawtotheDepartment ofConservationin1990anditwas relocatedtoOngaongaMuseumand restored.
DenniswasraisedinOngaongaand thoroughlyenjoyedgrowingupthere. Laterhemanagedfarmsaroundthe districtincluding20yearsonasheep, beefanddeerfarminHatuma.Dennis stilldoesoccasionalmusteringworkin theareabutdoesspendmuchtime onmuseumbusiness.“Ilovelocal history,Iloveit.”
PendleHouseisjoinedbyagrowing collectionofbuildings,many containinghistoricalartifacts,towards theendofBridgeStreet.Collectively thisisknownastheOngaonga MuseumComplex.Themuseumis openeverySundayfrom11am-3pm andthere’sasmallentrancefee. Groupbookingsareacceptedby arrangement. HerevisitorscanexplorePendle House,nowacolonialmuseum, theoldschoolhouse,abutcher’s shop,prisoncellsandmuchmore. Eachbuildinghasbeenthoughtfully decoratedwithappropriateitems fromyesteryear.Everybuildinghas alsobeenrefurbishedandre-painted soit’slookingspicandspanforthe celebrationsinOctober.
TheColesfactoryalittledownthe roadisalsopartofthemuseum.Itis alistedcategoryonebuildingwith NewZealandHistoricPlacesTrust.It alsowonanawardintheHawke’sBay HeritageAwardsin2022.Itsrestoration wasquiteamission. In2016theFraterfamilygiftedthe societytheColesBuildingfor$1. Thesocietyheldanopendayand garneredover200visitors.Thedecision wasmadetorestorethebuildingbut beforetheyappliedforfundingfrom theLotteriesBoardtheyhadtoraise
considerablefunds.Twomarketdays wereheld,eachwithover7,000people attending.Covidhadtheirthirdevent cancelledbutCHBCouncilcameon boardandsupportedthesocieties applicationforalotteriesgrant.
Withmoneyfromtwofundraising marketdaysandagrantfromthe LotteriesBoardtheywereableto refurbishtheColesbuildingwhichwas officiallyopenedbymayorAlexWalker onSeptember10,2023.
Upuntil2016therewereonlyhalfa dozenactivemembersintheHistorical Society.Thenin2017/18therewasan influxofnewmemberswhocamewith manypracticalandadministrative skills,Dennissays.
DuringtherestorationoftheColes joineryfactoryagroupofFriday volunteerswasformed.Itspurpose istotacklejobsrequiredaround themuseumcomplex.Theyhavea long‘smoko’butcomeupwithsome goodideas.Thecurrentprojectisto restoretheBridgeParkPavilion150 celebrations.Workalsocontinuesona stationeryengineshed.
Visitorswillalsobeabletoviewa refurbishedmillboiler,“abigjob,” thatwasremovedfromGardnerand YeomansMill,Wakakarara.Thisnow
sitsattheendofBridgeStreetatthe junctionwithSH50.
Dennisclearlyremembersthe centenarycelebrationsin1975that attracted“atremendouscrowd.We wantthistobejustasgood.”

OperationCoverUp(OCU)was startedinCHBin2000byagroupof Anglicanwomen.JudyButlerandAlison Woodweretheoriginalcoordinators, andJanettookoverin2014.
WinterinEasternEuropecanget aslowas-25°Candmanychildren, familiesandtheelderlyhavelittleto keepthemwarminaharshwinter. ThroughOCUhundredsofKiwi’sknit, donatewoolandgoods,andfundraise forshippingcosts.
ThelocalOCUgroupincludewomen fromNapier,Taradale,Havelockand Hastingswhoknit,sewanddonate goodstohelplessfortunatepeoplein EasternEurope.Theyonlymeetonce ayearattheannualcoffeemorning soit’sagreatopportunitytomingle andinspectallthehardworkthathas beenputintotheirgarmentsandother knittedproducts.Janetsaysitwasa “lovelymorningandtheyreceivedsome generousdonations.”
Ondisplaywerebeanies,blankets, vests,scarvesandpulloversmadefrom homespunNewZealandwooland children’sdresses.Janetsewsgarments foryoungchildrenusingrecycled merino.Anelderlymemberwhois99 knitsstripsforblankets.
Theywillsendawayfoursoftly pressedbalesofgoodsand22banana boxesfullofothergoodssuchas sanitaryandhygieneproducts.The balesarepressedinJanetandher husbandWayne’swoolshed.Wayne pressesthebalesthencartsthem toWaipawa.Fromtheretheywillbe freightedatnocostbyStevenson TransportandMainfreightNapier.Then thegoodsarepackedincontainers andareshippedtoHollandandlater transportedtoRomania.AnnuallyNew Zealandsendstwo,40-footcontainers fullofgoods.

Marie,andherhusbandRex, havelivedonthelargesection, withviewstotheRuahines,for almost40years.Theyturned1½acres intothewoodlandwithnativeplantings. Theyalsoraisechickensandenjoyall thatarurallifestylecanoffer.
Aftermanyyearstravellingoverseas Katierecentlyreturnedhomeandis planningtostayputforawhile.Shehas severalpart-timejobsandasahobby shedyesfabricsusingitemsfoundin naturesuchasleavesandbark.She dabbledalittlesomeyearsagobut hastakentoitseriouslynowandhas becomequiteaccomplishedinwhat isatechnical,somewhatscientific business.
ThePickeringhousehold,thanksto Marie,wasfullofartsandcraftasKatie wasgrowingup.Theyhadabigtable fullofknitting,painting,paperwork, origamiandsoon.Theygavesome finishedpiecesasgiftsandsoldafew piecestoo.“Welikevarietyandaswe’ve gottenolder,we’vefoundourniches,” Katiesays.
Marieisretiredandprefersaquiet lifethesedays,butshestillworksin multiplemediumsbringingrichtexture anddetailtoherwork.Shepaints landscapesandhasrecentlydabbled inoils,doesneedlefeltingandwool work.She’slargelyself-taughtapart
fromtakingafewshortcoursessome timeago.
Herwoolwallpicturesoftenfeature hergarden,thetrees,floraandfauna andhersurroundings.Sheenjoys capturingtheconnectiontothe seasons.Occasionallyshedoescreate somethingquirkylikeapaintingofa friedegg,butsheexplainsthatasit’s aneggfromtheirchickensandanother connectiontonature.Twiceayear MarieattendsmarketsinHastingsand Wellington,otherwiseshesellsonline. “Alotofourworkisharmoniouswith eachother.”Herworkcaptures“our gardenourtrees,andourconnectionto theseasons.“It’saverypeaceful,quiet life,that’swherewegettheorganicfeel toourartandcraft,”Mariesays.
Lastyeartheyopenedacountrystall attheirgate-sellingtheirartsand crafts,plantsandoccasionalsurplus vegetables.Itwasasuccess,andthey plantodoitagainthisspring.
Katiesourcesallherclothingsecond handandhasasustainable,recycled approachtoallherwork.“Thereis definitelyenoughproducedforallof us10x.Upcyclingfashionandusing recycledfabrictomakeintoartand craftismypassion.Ithelpsworkingat anopshoptoo,andit’seyeopeningto howmuchweallconsumeandthrow away.
Katie’sworkislabourintensive,butshe saysitnotdifficult.Thematerialmust bethoroughlycleanedthenscoured withsodaash,washedinnatural detergentandthenaprocesscalled mordantingtakesplace.Thishelps naturaldyesadheretofibresand improvescolourfastness.Afteranother washingthefabricisreadytodye.She usesavarietyofnaturalproductssuch
asbarkandleavestocreateheroneoffpieces.
Therawmaterialsarebundledupinthe fabricandsteamedforabout1½hours. Thistransfersthetanninstothecloth. Onceunbundledthefinishedpiece isrevealed.Thereisquiteascience totheprocessandnaturalchemical reactionsoccur,butKatieconfesses shedoesn’twritethingsdownandshe enjoys“therandomnessofit”.
Katiedisplaysheritemsforsaleat variouslocalmarketsincludingthe OtaneArtisanmarket,theHavelock NorthHandmademarketandtheTe Awangamarket.Shealsosellsonline. Whileit’sjustahobbyshe’dliketo expandandattendmoremarkets. She’dalsoliketogiveworkshopssoshe canpassherknowledgeontoothers. Motheranddaughtershowcasedtheir sharedconnectiontonatureintheir exhibitionNaturalImpressions,heldat ThistleHallinWellingtonfrom6–11May. Theexhibitionfeaturedeco-printed textiles,botanicalart,paintings,and wool-basedworks.Itwasagreat successandachangeofpaceforthe country-basedduo.
“Mum’salwaysbeenmybiggestfan, mybiggestmuse,shehasalways inspiredandencouragedme.Dad’sin theshedandwillhelpwithanythingI need,”Katiesays.

CentralHawke’sBay-Justa fewshortweeksago,Jojo,a gentleandresilientpup,was strugglingthroughlifewitha painfuleyeconditionanda deeplytraumaticpast.
Today,thankstotheoverwhelming generosityoftheCentralHawke’s Baycommunity,Jojo’seyesare healingbeautifully-buttheemotional journeytowardtrustandjoyisstill unfolding,onedayatatime. JojocameintothecareofRuahine AnimalRescuefromasituationof seriousneglect,whereloveand safetyweremissing.Frightenedand withdrawn,Jojodidn’tknowwhat kindnessfeltlike.Butwiththepatient, compassionatecareofhisfoster mumandtheunwaveringsupportof theRuahineteam,he’staking hisfirstbravestepstoward recovery.
Physically,Jojowas sufferingfromCherry Eye-apainful conditioncausing theglandina dog’sthirdeyelid tobecome inflamedand protrude.Itleft
himuncomfortableandatriskof furthercomplications.Surgeryonboth eyeswasquotedatadiscounted $800,andwithinjustfourhoursof launchingafundraiser,ourincredible communitysteppedupanddonated everycentneededtocoverthe procedure.
Thesurgerywasasuccess.Jojo’s eyes,whilestillslightlyred,areno longercausinghimpain.Heismore comfortable,andphysically,he’s bouncingbackwell.Butemotionally, hishealingjourneyisonlyjust beginning.Jojoisstilllearningtotrust humansagain,andhisfosterfamilyis lettinghimsetthepace.
“Hehasgooddaysandhesitantdays,” saysGayeCampbell,RuahineAnimal RescueChairperson.“Buteverytail wag,everystepcloser,everymoment ofcomfort-that’sawin.We’renot rushinghim.We’rejusttakingitone dayatatimeandlettingJojoknow he’ssafeandloved.”
