Itisaprofoundhonourtoassumetheroleof HeadBoyforLindisfarneCollegein2025.This position,however,isnotasolitaryundertaking.Iam privilegedtoleadalongsidetheentireprefectteam, agroupdeeplycommittedtoservingthestudent bodyandfosteringathrivingschoolcommunity.Our primaryfocusis,andwillremain,thewell-beingand successofeverystudentatLindisfarne.

Ourleadershipwillbecharacterisedbydedication, proactiveengagement,andagenuinecommitment tosupportingeachindividual.Ourgroupintendsto bereadilyaccessibleandresponsivetotheneeds ofourpeers,providingguidanceandmentorship whererequired.

Originallyplannedtobeauniversity,what arosefromagiftedpieceoflandinTaradalewas theHawke’sBayCommunityCollege.Whenit openeditsdoorsforvocationalandcommunity educationin1975,notmanywouldhave anticipatedthatitwouldbecomeEIT.

Attheheartofitallwasabequestofapiece oflandclosetotheŌtataraPasite,southof Taradale,byMargaretHetley.

HildaMargaretHetley(1889-75)hadgraduated withaMasterofArtsfromCambridge Universityandshewantedatertiaryinstitution forHawke’sBay.Shemadeherbequestfora campustohonourherlatehusband,FredericSt ArnaudHetley,andalsotomarktheprovincial centennialofHawke’sBayin1958.

Itwasthestartofacademicexcellencethat wouldexpandtoincludemultipledegree programmes–theBachelorofNursingbeing thefirstin1996.Thatsameyearthename

changedtoEasternInstituteofTechnology (EIT).EITconsolidateditselfasthepreeminent educationalproviderontheEastCoastwhenit mergedwithTairāwhitiPolytechnicinGisborne in2011.

Therehavebeenmanydevelopmentsduring thefiftyyears,includingtheestablishment oftheŌtataraChildren’sCentrein1977;the firstcomputersbeingsetupin1985;nursing trainingstartingin1981;Māoristudiesbeing launchedatTeMangaMāori,nowbetter knownasthemuch-extendedTeŪrangaWaka, in1989;theTwistLibraryopeningin1993;and bythelate1990snewbachelordegreeswere startedincludingbusinessstudies,computing systems,Māoristudies,visualartsanddesign, viticultureandwinescience.

Studyoptionscontinuedtoexpandintothe early2000s,withtheadditionofbachelor degreesforsport&exercise,appliedsocial sciences,amaster’sdegreeinnursing,an honours’degreeforMāoristudiesanda diplomainearlychildhoodteaching.

NewZealand’slargestregionally-based TradesAcademyopenedontheHawke’s Baycampusin2012.Nowalsoofferedatthe Tairāwhiticampus,theTradesAcademyworks withsecondaryschoolstoprovideyear-long tradesprogrammestohelpstudentsachieve NCEALevel2andprepareforworkor higher-levelstudy.

EIThasthrivedoverthelast50years,now offeringmorethan160postgraduate,degree, diplomaandcertificate-levelprogrammes. TakingMargaretHetley’sdreamfortheregion beyondwhatshecouldhaveimagined.
