With

a curved interlacing structural core, the component of

this aggregation is one with central integrity, which allows for variation due to its structural, yet malleable materiality.

The

resulting prototype works much like a structural spinal

formation. The component allowed for aggregation in the x-axis,

the z-axis, and in addition, created a contortion around its core.

Further

possibilities of connection were then explored and

created in order to achieve a controlled, yet divergent aggregation.

component remained an integral core,

SPRING 2013 Critic: Kevin Daly Location: Los Angeles, CA

Housing the LACMA Museum of Glass, this undulating canopy is formed by a double concrete shell and held apart by a waffle system. In order to support itself above the ground, the bottom shell melts down to the ground at certain points. The highest peak of the canopy houses the main space within the composition, the Hot Shop Auditorium. This is not only the main working space, but also the main entertainment space where glass blowing shows take place.

Since all the glass working areas must be connected and adjacent to each other, the work shop and work zones are organized on the west wing of the building and are open to the hot shop auditorium.

In order to reach the main level, five feet below ground, a series or ramps and steps descend from the street elevation and from within the site. The layout of the programmatic spaces allow for a free flowing and fluid circulation throughout.

The aesthetic qualities of plasticity and fluidity produced by the continuous canopy relate directly to the concept and material characteristics of glass and glass blowing. Furthermore, form becomes particularly connected to funtion in the glass working areas. Here, apart from allowing natural light to reach the work area, the canopy directs all the fumes to points where exhaust systems are existing within the double shell.

The underground level was incorporated in order to allow for darker exhibition spaces, ones requiring a more controlled lighting environment. It is reached through the main ramp existing within the building, and exterior staircase, and aso has access to the lecture hall.

make up the wall are therefore fabricated with fiberglass and resin, and are in a sense, a mocking version of the original.

inflated translucent objects imitate the original shapes, only

giving a false sense of robustness, presence and power. Consequently with its toy-like nature, the chosen materiality for the fabrication of

the objects introduce a playfulness characteristic to the stacked composition, suited for a children’s day-care and playground.
