In partnership with the Business, Education & Community Alliance (BECA), the St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce helps fund local scholarships for graduating high school seniors pursuing higher education. BECA, a nonprofit established in 1989 by the Chamber and the County Superintendent of Schools, administers an annual Common Scholarship Application, allowing students to apply for multiple local awards through a single process.
Each year, the Chamber sponsors a $1,000 scholarship for a student planning to return and contribute to the local workforce. Eligible applicants must be graduating from a public or private high school in St. Mary’s County and submit a brief essay outlining their career goals.
For more details and to access the application, visit www.smcbeca.org.
For the 2024–2025 cycle, Cristian Adams, a Leonardtown High School Class of 2025 student, was selected as the recipient of the Chamber’s scholarship.

St. Mary’s County’s main roads connect to US 301 and I-95. Just 85 miles north from downtown Leonardtown, the 50-foot channel port of Baltimore is a leading U.S. automobile and break-bulk port with five public terminals, including a state-of-the-art container terminal.
Captain Walter Francis Duke Terminal at St. Mary’s County Regional Airport. St. Mary’s County’s regional airport accommodates both single and twin-engine aircraft, as well as helicopters and gliders. Most flights are small, single-engine airplanes; mid-size corporate jets with up to twelve passengers also find it convenient for business travel.
Small airports within thirty-mile radius of Washington, DC now operate under “safety zone” restrictions. Our airport is outside that zone, making it convenient for travelers with business beyond St. Mary’s. The airport has added several larger industrial hangars for corporate aircraft over the past years and is completing a runway extension for future growth in aviation activity.

Three Notch Theatre, Newtowne Players
Welcome to Three Notch Theatre, home of The Newtowne Players. The Newtowne Players was formed by former Artistic Director Wendy Heidrich and a large core group of founding executive council. The group quickly began to grow, and it wasn’t long before they realized the necessity for a permanent space to call home. The group tried several different avenues to find places to perform. Its first true production was held in the basement of the former Do-Dah Deli on the square in Leonardtown, Maryland. It was received with much enthusiasm, but the basement could not become a permanent home. They continued to look at a variety of venues, even performing in the streets for “Hot Summer Nights on Fenwick,” and presented a “Mystery Dinner Theatre” at the Olde Breton Inn for the Knights of Columbus. Today, The Newtowne Players have achieved what many thought to be impossible. We have a home, appropriately named Three Notch Theatre, home of The Newtowne Players.
Before becoming a theatre, Three Notch Theatre served the community for more than three decades as a public library. With the support of the St. Mary’s County Commissioners and the Redevelopment Authority, The Newtowne Players took possession of the building in 2005 and began the transformation from library to community theatre—stripping the building down to bare walls and floors, erecting the seating area and revolving stage and setting up space for the lobby, green room, dressing room and box office.
The work was accomplished by an army of volunteers, and we are proud to continue to be an all-volunteer organization. We believe Three Notch Theatre is a memorable experience for all of those who step through our doors. It is truly a community theatre: for the community, in the community, and by the community.
