"FUTURE PERFECT" AND TEEN ENGAGEMENT Mia Brittain Standing in a room full of adults, including 2 politicians (Tim Watts MP and Steve Bracks AC), a history professor (Frank Bongiorno), a political journalist (George Megalogenis), my aunt, and my high school history teacher, I was quickly reminded of how fast my heart can beat when I'm nervous. For the past hour, I'd been listening to the "Future Perfect" panel at Willy Lit Fest, as they spoke about the political and economic future of Australia and how the past can influence our predictions. Three of the panelists have recently released books on the topic (Frank Bongiorno, Tim Watts and George Megalogenis), which they discussed throughout the session. Many references were made to the 1980s, a

period of great reform (although I must admit that, apart from perms and crazy clothes, I don't know much about), but as the conversation continued, focus shifted to their views of society's political engagement and the progress we should be making. Bracks spoke against the "grumpiness of political discourse� and there was a general consensus that nowhere near enough people are interested in political debates. There was a call for more engagement, especially amongst young people. Tim Watts emphasised the need for people to be invested in the democratic process, labelling democracy as a "change machine," believing "we need to recapture [the] spirit of democratic innovation".
