"FUTURE PERFECT" AND TEEN ENGAGEMENT Mia Brittain Standing in a room full of adults, including 2 politicians (Tim Watts MP and Steve Bracks AC), a history professor (Frank Bongiorno), a political journalist (George Megalogenis), my aunt, and my high school history teacher, I was quickly reminded of how fast my heart can beat when I'm nervous.

For the past hour, I'd been listening to the "Future Perfect" panel at Willy Lit Fest, as they spoke about the political and economic future of Australia and how the past can influence our predictions.

Three of the panelists have recently released books on the topic (Frank Bongiorno, Tim Watts and George Megalogenis), which they discussed throughout the session. Many references were made to the 1980s, a

period of great reform (although I must admit that, apart from perms and crazy clothes, I don't know much about), but as the conversation continued, focus shifted to their views of society's political engagement and the progress we should be making. Bracks spoke against the "grumpiness of political discourse� and there was a general consensus that nowhere near enough people are interested in political debates.

There was a call for more engagement, especially amongst young people. Tim Watts emphasised the need for people to be invested in the democratic process, labelling democracy as a "change machine," believing "we need to recapture [the] spirit of democratic innovation". FROM THE EDITOR Hello Readers!

So in true Spring tradition, new life has burst into the world in the form of my beautiful baby boy!!

Archer Frank Longo Thorne arrived on August 7th at 4:29pm and we could not be more thrilled.

I have had one hell of a pregnancy and I cannot tell you how glad I am for it to be over, but what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger and I certainly feel as though I have grown from this experience.

Willow is loving her new role as a big sister. I am feeling like a pretty lucky woman at the moment, but gee could I use some sleep.

In honour of the new season, we have put together a Spring issue for your enjoyment.

With tips on Spring cleaning and how to cope with Hay Fever, there is plenty to like about our September edition.

I would also like to give a special shout out to Kane Brooks.

He has kindly agreed to take over our Kid’s page and we are excited to have him on board.

PUDDLING WITH THE PUBLISHER Spring means a lot to me. Point Cook has lots of flowers planted in boxes, in the nature strips and hanging over fences, enabling me to pick enchanting small posies for Freda, as I make my regular 20K trips to visit with her in the brand new Nursing Home, ‘Home Style’ in Point Cook.

This magnificent multi-million-dollar spacious Aged Care building contains all the latest available features, which I believe makes it a better life for Freda. Better than being home with me trying to care for her.

I’d hung on for almost a year, believing she may miss me, or might think I had thrown her out. I’d always had difficulty getting a top off, over her shoulders, so much so that one day I had to grab scissors and cut

the shirt up the front to get it off her. The very next day I overheard the Home Care lady say, ‘Put your arms out Freedie’ and I thought, what else don’t I know? So I gave in.

Freda enjoys walking with her wheelie, and with several long passages to explore, has earned the nickname ‘The Happy Wanderer’so at least I know her exercise regime seems to be OK.

Bongiorno said that our good politicians should be "recognising the big issues" and working to solve them. All panelists said that they were optimistic about the future, Watts stating that he "wouldn't have gone into politics if [he] wasn't." Bracks said that he remained "optimistic about the people" of Australia and everyone once again reiterated that young people should be encouraged to engage in the political process.

As a 16-year-old, I definitely took notice of this discussion, but the perspective is different from where I am standing. It's often assumed that young people are either ignorant or reckless in their political opinion, and we often get shut down because of it.

So, very close to the end of the session, I tentatively raised my hand and stood to ask a question;

question, said that he and Clare O'Neil (who coauthored their book) both agreed with me and supported lowering the voting age. At the end of the session, I bought their book, "Two Futures: Australia at a Critical Moment", because I was really interested by the panel and discussion. When asking for Watts to sign it, he actively engaged with me and wrote a personalised message in the book cover.

It was really evident that the four panelists were serious about wanting to engage young people and their interactions with me proved it.

I explained to them that teenagers really are interested in politics, especially because politicians are creating the future we'll have to live in and that we'd be grateful if we could contribute to their decisions.

PMS Pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) is thought to affect about 90 per cent of women at some point in their lives.

Conventional treatment for the often severe and debilitating effects of PMS, is based on the pill and antidepressants. However, more and more women are seeking a natural approach to this problem. One of the most established natural treatments for PMS is an extract of an exotic fruit known as Agnus castus.

Agnus castus, or by its scientific name, Vitex agnuscastus, has been used for hundreds of years for its balancing effect on the female hormonal system.

Modern research has confirmed its use and this favourite folk remedy, appears to be making its way into mainstream medicine.

In a study on the effect of Agnus castus, published in the Journal of Women's Health and Gender Based Medicine, 90 per cent of the 1600 who participated, reported an improvement in, or elimination of their PMS. Four out of five women rated themselves as feeling so much better. Another earlier study showed that Agnus castus may be effective in the treatment of acne, a common pre-menstrual symptom, and may also help in some cases of infertility, where hormone imbalance is a factor.

How does Agnus castus work?

PMS is related to hormonal fluctuations in the second half of the menstrual cycle. A common feature of women with PMS, is higher levels of a hormone known as prolactin, which is secreted by the pituitary gland.

Excess prolactin can upset the balance of other hormones, and in particular is thought to result in a deficit of the hormone progesterone. Progesterone in turn balances the effects of another hormone, oestrogen, in the body. A lack of progesterone can therefore give rise to a condition known as oestrogen dominance, which itself often seems to be an underlying factor in PMS. Research shows that Agnus castus (also known as Chasteberry, Monk's pepper and Vitex) can reduce prolactin levels and increase the production of progesterone. These effects help to correct the hormonal imbalances common in PMS, thereby helping to ease its symptoms.

SIMPLE WAYS TO MANAGE HAY FEVER

Spring is such a beautiful season. The weather warms up, the plants start blooming, whilst the birds merrily chirp away. For allergy sufferers however, the arrival of spring is not so cheerful. If your nose isn’t dripping, it is completely congested. Sneezing, watery eyes, scratchy throat, itchy nose, eyes, ears itchy everything! And if you are an unlucky allergy sufferer, your asthma and/or eczema will often follow suit, sometimes for months!

Allergic reactions, such as hay fever (allergic rhinitis) occur when your immune system has an exaggerated response to environmental triggers, also known as allergens. This overzealous reaction causes immune cells to release chemicals - one in particular being histamine - causing inflammation and irritation of mucosal tissue, which is often followed by the excessive production of mucus.

How to manage your symptoms: Identify and reduce exposure to environmental triggers: • Check the pollen index regularly (available on the Weatherzone website.) On days when the pollen index is high, avoid hanging the washing outside and try to stay indoors for the day if possible.

• Take your shoes off at the front door to reduce the amount of dust, dirt and particles you bring into the home.

• Vacuum frequently. Use a vacuum cleaner fitted with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter.

• Dust your house regularly, using a damp microfibre cloth, which is more effective at catching dust particles. Plus, it is environmentally friendly.

• Reduce the clutter in your household. Clutter attracts dust and makes cleaning much more time consuming. Plastic storage tubs (with lids) and space-saving bags are really useful for storing items not used on an everyday basis.

• Ensure adequate cross-ventilation of your living

spaces to prevent/reduce mould growth. If your home is not well ventilated, consider investing in a dehumidifier.

• If you have a pet allergy, keep pets out of bedrooms and off beds, couches and armchairs. Bathe your pets weekly and wash your hands after playing with them.

• Wash bed linen and towels in hot water on a regular basis to reduce dust mite allergens. Air pillows and mattresses in direct sunlight if possible.

Non-medicated options for managing hay fever symptoms: • Seawater or saline nasal sprays are useful for relieving inflammation and irritation of the nasal passages and loosening up mucus. You can find saline nasal sprays with added eucalyptus, to help relieve nasal congestion, or with tea-tree to help reduce the risk of infection.

• Nasal irrigation goes a step further than the nasal sprays. A sinus irrigation bottle or a neti pot is used to flush out the nasal and sinus cavities with a saline solution. Current research supports the use of nasal irrigation to help remove excess mucus, bacteria and

particles from the nasal and sinus passages, as well as reduce mucosal inflammation.

• Artificial tears (in spray or eye drop form) can help soothe irritated, red eyes and reduce that gritty feeling you get with hay fever allergies. Tears form a film across the surface of the eye, which acts as a barrier to allergens and helps to wash them away quickly. Keep a bottle of artificial tears in the fridge for some extra cooling eye relief.

• For that irritated scratchy throat, a salt water gargle is pretty effacious. In between gargles, sipping on some green tea is well known for its cancer-fighting antioxidants, but it also contains astringent compounds that can help reduce mucosal irritation and inflammation. Green tea also contains epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) compounds, that have been shown to have anti-allergic properties.

Add a spoonful of honey (Manuka if you have it) to your green tea for some extra soothing action.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Harry Potter fans were treated to another trip to the wizarding world, thanks to the release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child this July.

Unlike the other books in the series, this latest instalment is the script of the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage show, which is currently being

performed in London's Palace Theatre.

Set 19 years after the Deathly Hallows, the story follows Harry and Ginny’s eldest son Albus, as he struggles to step out from his father’s shadow and form his own identity.

During his first year at Hogwarts, Albus meets Scorpius, son of Draco Malfoy and together they have a surprisingly delightful friendship, as they both struggle to shake off their fathers vastly different pasts.

Whilst the story is not in the same format as the other books, it is still a fantastic addition to the Harry Potter world and will satisfy those curious to know more about the next generation of Potters, Malfoys and Weasleys.

‘what if's’ are examined and explored in detail.

Over all, this is a wonderful quick read, which will bring a little bit of magic back into the lives of Harry Potter fans of all ages.

TREADING THE TIMELINE OF URBAN GROWTH development; odd little plaques and signs that don’t have a current purpose.

The concept of psychogeography was discussed during ‘Walking and Writing the Suburbs,’ an inspiring presentation at this year’s Willy Lit Fest.

Writer of Melbourne Circle: stories from the suburbs, Nick Gadd describes psychogeography as ‘the theory of emotional connection between people and places.’

“I walk attentively and observe,” Gadd said, “invested in things that are lost and unnoticed or obscure.”

Spring lends itself to walking; sitting in between icy, dark winter days and the sometimes-uncomfortable swelter of summer.

On a good walk, you can discover all manner of things that you’d easily miss in a car. Old singlestory buildings that have survived amongst modern

Gadd walked the audience through some of those findings. The discovery of ‘ghost signs,’ - layers of signage painted on the sides of buildings, offering clues for the inquisitive, to draw out stories of the generations that lived and worked there before.

He described with delight, the discovery of a nineteenth century ‘Dr. King’ sign, that had been hidden on the side of a building for many years, reappearing only when the hotel next door was demolished.

Once intrigued by a site, Gadd uses a number of resources to investigate its history. Trove, the National Library of Australia’s database of content from libraries, museums, archives, repositories and other research is invaluable as is the State Library, National Trust, the Miles Lewis Melbourne Mansions database and local historical societies.

THE WAITING ROOM - LEAH KAMINSKY The Williamstown Literary Festivals session ‘New Fiction’ featured two very talented writers, Jennifer Down and Leah Kaminsky, they discussed their debut novels with Dr Natalie Kon-Yu and the audience.

Leah is a doctor and writer who ventured into fiction with her debut novel, The Waiting Room.

As a teenager growing up in Melbourne, Leah said she didn't like to listen to her mother’s stories, but “in our adult life, we spend time trying to capture what we missed in our youth.”

Her mum came out of a camp when she was 21, it was after her death that Leah decided to write her mother’s story, unfortunately her mum had been the last survivor.

“I only had three stories, so I went from there.”

Deciding to write it as a fiction, it was in a sense, autobiographical - the doctor in the novel came from personal experience.

Leah lived in Israel for 10 years, while raising three kids.

When asked about obstacles Leah replied, “it took ten years to write.

One major obstacle initially, was the subject material - I had to go into the ‘belly of the beast.’

There is a saying… if the writer doesn't cry, the reader wont cry.” Yet another obstacle, Leah believed, was that she had shown her novel to too many people, receiving too much feedback.

When the book first came out, Leah spoke of a huge relief, but also how confronting and scary it was to have to talk about it.

It was worth talking about though, Leah said, as children of Somali refugees would come up to her saying, “This is my story.”

Dr Natalie Kon-Yu then asked Leah if she had gone to Israel to run away from her mother, or to find her.

The turning point came when a Nobel prize winner recommended she get rid of the ghost - when you read Leah’s book you will understand why she said no to this advice.

Her answer: “I went there for love (mum), but I probably found my mother.

Leah spoke of being introduced to ghosts in literature, and when completing her Master of Fine Arts in Fiction Writing, wrote a thesis entitled: Talking to the Dead – Can Haunting Lead us Home.

I spent my life running from my heritage - when I was there, I found I was comfortable with it.”

The writing of her book was a 10 year obsession, her kids telling her to “get it out there because we don't want to write on your tombstone, “she almost wrote a book.”

Israel is a country comfortable with their dead.

The Waiting Room, a book well worth reading, is described by Geraldine Brooks as “both haunted and haunting.”

CONNECTING WITH OUR NATURAL HISTORY western region of Melbourne, including the Werribee River catchment area.

The Natural History Centre currently consists of 3-4 rooms of displays that cover marine life and coastal themes, megafauna and geology, waterways and wetlands, and the fauna and flora of the Victorian basalt plains.

The Centre has a small library and resources for the student researcher and is a bit of a magnet for those who want to connect and protect the environment.

The Natural History Centre is the bright idea of NatureWest staff and volunteer committee members, who have created a natural history gallery at the Homestead at Werribee Park.

It is open weekdays between 10am – 3pm and Volunteer Guides are available to provide a description of the displays.

With support from Parks Victoria, the Natural History Centre provides the community a unique insight into our local living history, both past and present, of the

NatureWest’s Coordinator, Colleen Miller, is always busy.

Aside from the regular duties of supporting local landcare and environmental groups, together with partnering with organisations and running events to support the natural environment, she now has the Natural History Centre as a major project.

Whilst setting up and maintaining the Natural History Centre is quite time consuming, this ambitious project has the support of the community, and many people have already contributed to its planning, design and purpose.

The Coordinator Colleen asserts, “We do rely on dedicated volunteers to help with the displays, to volunteer as guides, to do general organising tasks, plus we are seeking funding for part-time staffing to attend to the business development side of the project.”

One keen supporter of the Natural History Centre is local Werribee resident, Lisa Field who assisted the centre with signage and communications, and affirms “This project has all the makings of a significant long term community asset, but needs more of the right people to come along at the right time to help it fully succeed.”

The activities include: Meet Our Local Waterbugs, Plastics and Whales, Walk, Talk & Plant, Mega Fauna of the West, Heritage Orchard Tour, a Weaving Demonstration, The Ocean at the End of Our Street, A Garden Tour and the Film Screening of Melbourne Down Under.

PARIS TO POINT COOK – Part deux….

In our April edition, we printed the first part of this story….due to popular demand, we are continuing this story over the next two issues, so stay tuned and enjoy the Parisian journey.

The trip was absolutely exhilarating!

With lots of different kinds of food, dancing every night, and even wine with dinner, (something I was definitely not used to!) And Phil, of course, took his guitar and played and sang to the very appreciative passengers. It was great!

We had planned to go to Paris, but docked in Marseilles and decided to stay there for a little while, while we got our bearings.

We went to Paris 2 weeks later and we were completely taken aback by the sheer enormity of the city.

We happened to sit next to an Algerian named Michel on the train to Paris, and he offered to show us around, and helped us find some digs: one bedroom with 2 beds, on a block in the Montmartre part of town - one sink, cold water; that was it.

The shower was 3 floors up - cold in winter. Anyway, it was somewhere to lay our heads and a base from which to explore this magnificent city.

Unfortunately, my dear and talented brother could not get a job, as in those days, they had to employ French Nationals, (even though his French was perfect).

so the 3 of them travelled by various means – train and hitch-hiking mostly, (it’s amazing how many vehicles stop when they see 2 gorgeous girls wanting a lift.)

They eventually arrived in Brisbane and stayed with our Uncle and Aunt, while I drove up and to collect them.

Phil, by this stage, was madly in love with the strikingly beautiful Marie-Blanche, and a marriage proposal was not far away….

I landed a typing job in an American/French Travel Agency, mainly translating English/Spanish - who would have thought! At least we could pay the rent and eat - a little.

I stayed in Paris for a year and was totally absorbed by the city.

Paris excites all the senses – I walked to work and was captivated by the lifestyle and customs around me.

In those days there weren’t buskers on the streets, or Phil would have soon become a very rich tourist.

But he couldn’t get work, so he decided to hitch-hike home to Australia.

He made it as far as Israel and decided to stay in a Kibbutz there for a few months.

Truth is, he had met 5 gorgeous French chicks who were travelling to India together and they asked him to join them.

Well, what red-blooded 22-year-old Aussie would refuse such a rare invitation?

As it turned out, he contracted hepatitis there and stayed a bit longer.

I sent him a bit of cash on paydays, but he never received it.

All the French girls were Nurses, so he was well taken care of.

TO MOW OR NOT TO MOW If I wanted to take advantage of their love of the outdoors I had to learn to mow.

In the beginning it was difficult.

Difficult to start, difficult to manoeuvre.

Honestly the whole scenario wasn't exactly what I had envisaged.

At first, whenever I mowed, inevitably a child wanted something.

As Spring appears, so does the familiar sound of the Victor.

For years I've been a fan of the lawn mower.

It started when Hubby was working extreme hours and the children were always keen to get into the backyard, jumping from the swing set to the cubby, onto the trampoline. Literally.

It's like trying to make a phone call when you have a toddler.

The minute the phone rings or you dial out, they immediately need your attention.

But one day when the job took a little longer than usual, it suddenly dawned on me. The children were quiet.

The quicker the better in their minds.

Exactly the opposite to what I was thinking.

A peek through the window saw no fighting, ransacking the pantry or sticky-tape adhesion to the dog.

Amazing.

It took me a while to catch on, but the moment I realised mowing was something I could do completely and utterly alone, I knew I was onto something.

No wonder I'm seeing more and more women out mowing lawns.

Just don't spill the beans to the men.

After months of trying to get my attention, only to be met with responses advising this was a dangerous job and they needed to stay inside until it was finished, the children finally got the picture.

That, and the fact that when I wore those hideous ear muffs, I couldn't hear what they wanted anyway.

3 KEYS TO REDUCING ANXIETY • Increase the following foods in your diet as they supply valuable minerals which are depleted by anxiety and stress - apricots, asparagus, avocados, bananas, broccoli, blackstrap molasses, brewer’s yeast, brown rice, dried fruits, dulse, figs, garlic, green leafy veggies, legumes, raw nuts and seeds;

We want everyone in Point Cook to get active and embrace a healthy lifestyle, no matter what age or ability.

In 2016/17, two levels of grants - up to $3000 or up to $10,000 - are available for clubs establishing new activities, competitions and programs that encourage more women and girls to get involved in physical activity, or which are starting up a social or modified sports program.

I urge local clubs and sporting organisations to apply for a VicHealth grant to establish new teams, programs or competitions for women, or to start up a modified sports program.

I was joined by Premier Daniel Andrews at The Women’s Hospital recently, to release the new data which shows the number of cases of the deadly disease at historically low levels in Victoria.

So far this year, doctors have reported only 1,808 cases of whooping cough – down from 3,009 cases at the same time last year – which is a decrease of 40 per cent.

WYNDHAM CITIZEN OF THE YEAR REVEALED Children’s Hospital, Relay for Life and is an Ambassador for Bowel Cancer Australia.

After being diagnosed with bowel cancer at the age of 40, Julie used her experience to help others.

She wrote a book entitled Just a Little Unwell, in which she shared her journey of surviving cancer.

She has donated many copies of this book to different groups and organisations to help other people who may be going through a similar situation to her.

A lifelong Wyndham resident with a passion for volunteering has been named Wyndham Citizen of the Year.

Julie Toner has volunteered for many local organisations including the Hoppers Crossing CFA, Werribee Mercy Hospital, and Yerambooee Kindergarten. She also volunteers with the Royal

Julie received her award at the Wyndham Community Volunteer Awards on Friday 19th August, where she was also honoured with the Community Health and Wellbeing Award.

Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Adele Hegedich said, despite her personal health struggles, Julie has never given up on her volunteer commitments.

“It would be difficult to find a more deserving recipient of Wyndham Citizen of the Year than Julie Toner.

This busy mother of five children has personally helped to raise more than $30,000 for Bowel Cancer Australia through events that she has organised,” Cr Hegedich said.

“Her tireless volunteer work with countless organisations including Hoppers Crossing CFA and Werribee Mercy Hospital, as well as her dedication to helping others fighting cancer battles of their own, has made her a truly inspirational Wyndham resident.”

I have been watching superhero movies for as long as I can remember and I have been trying to work out exactly when Marvel became so much better at making movies than DC? It is clear to see that Marvel turned a corner with the release of Ironman, skilfully weaving together a universe that has been incredibly entertaining to watch.

The casting was spot on and the darkness and edginess of the Christopher Nolan trilogy was exactly what the franchise needed.

SPRING We Australians regard September 1 as the first day of spring. If it happens there is a chill in the air and it’s more wintry than vernal, that should not be surprising, as according to the astronomical calendar, winter still has 3 weeks of life.

Strictly speaking, the southern spring begins around September 21, varying according to the Spring Equinox, the day the southern hemisphere receives more sun than the northern hemisphere. I am told that this is due to the 23.5degrees tilt of the Earth’s axis.

Forget the science. Spring, in a technical sense, may not yet have sprung and, like me, you may be no spring chicken, but that’s no reason why the fun should not begin.

Spring is the season of love, of rebirth and renewal.

New life is bursting out all over. Birds proclaim it with joyful calls and songs. It’s no wonder that spring is a favourite theme of poets and song writers.

“Spring” is a versatile action word connoting energetic movement. As a noun it can be a natural source of water or an elastic contrivance of bent or coiled metal. The verb, “spring”, means to jump. So that’s the thing to do. Spring into action! Don’t wait for the equinox to enjoy the fresh air and extra sunshine.

With a spring in your step sally forth. Go to the beach.

Put your toe in the water; maybe dive right in. If Old Man Winter is having a final gasp, and there’s snow on the slopes, grab your skis and head for the hills.
