With more than 130 races in 2014, APBA racers were able to participate in races from all over the world, from Mexico, London and Qatar; championships were won, records were set and friendships were forged. This season saw many members do lots of incredible things, and there was no shortage of excitement. As some of us look forward to 2015 and take with us what we learned in 2014 with us and look to improve, some of us say goodbye and hang up our helmets and lifejackets. Even though some of us won’t be on the water anymore, we will never be too far away from our racing family.

But before some us say goodbye, let’s take a look back at all of the action that took place in 2014. Congratulations to all of our National Champions, High Point winners and record holders. Have a wonderful holiday season and we will see you in 2015. CORRECTION:

Over the last several years articles like this have been missing from Propeller Magazine. It is now time for it to reappear to address some of the issues with the APBA Insurance Program, clear up some rumors and help in the task of filling out insurance paperwork. The biggest single issue that seems to be prevalent is the speed in which the Insurance Application is turned around and the certificate of insurance (COI) is issued.
After reviewing many applications prior to writing this article, it seems that the biggest delay is caused by the application being submitted with incomplete information. Some of the items that may be causing some problems on the insurance application are listed below in no particular order.

Contracts for lease of property.
Outside course markers are required for all classes with the exception of Offshore and marathon racing. Distances are required from outside course marker, to shore, to spectator viewing area and to the spectator fleet. Distance also
required from shoreline to viewing area.
Certificates of insurance naming APBA and your club are required from all vendors, as in trinket sellers, food vendors, crane operators, electricians, and most importantly the ambulance company. Many of the applications state there are “NO VENDORS or SUB CONTRACTORS,” yet they show concession area, flea markets, wrecker service, security personnel and again the ambulances. There are either VENDORS or SUB CONTRACTORS and a COI is required for them or it will delay your event application from being approved. We don’t want the APBA Insurance Policy to have to pay for a loss caused by someone else.
If you sign a contract with the property owner for the use of the land for the pits, a launch site or any other contract the references insurance requirements, we would like a copy to make sure that we are in compliance. Setting records is something that every APBA racer dreams about, and with record runs taking place all over the country in 2014 there were plenty of opportunities to do so.
Kicking off the record setting season in Lakeland, FL., two records were set in on the five-mile/ five lap course in Inboard. Jim Sechler, Dan Kanfoush and the Y-1 Fast Eddie Too, set the new mark at 86.576 mph. In National Modified Thom Hines set a new mark at 102.087 mph. Following the Lakeland race, Record Runs took place in Oroville, Calif., Yelm, Wash., Dayton, Ohio, again in Yelm and the record setting season wrapped up in New Martinsville, WV., and Lincoln City, Ore.
Leading the way this year were Zach Malhiot and John Peeters, who both set four new records in the kneel down classes. All-in-all 65 total records were set and broken in 2014 and the best water for breaking records in the APBA came from Lincoln City, where 19 people were able to etch their names into APBA history. Congratulations to all of our new record holders.

SCORERS FORUM PREPARING FOR THE 2015 RACING SEASON WRITTEN BY // ANN MARIE SHAW, SCORING COMMITTEE

We have just completed racing for the 2014 season and hope you all had an awesome season. As the 2015 racing season is upon us, we need to keep in mind some little problems that can create a big one. If we the racers, referees, scorers, inspectors, registrars, help each other, we can get the job done and go racing. Everyone, race committee, officials, drivers and crews need to be at the race site, ready to perform their duties, on time. Everyone needs to be prepared for registration. Owners and drivers remember to bring your physicals, club card, your capsule training certification (depending on your category requirements), and inspection card. A complaint this year from some of the scorers was that the entry blanks were not completely filled out. It only takes you a minute to look over the form. You, the racers, are the only one who can provide the correct information. You can also have your

entry blank filled out before the event, some events even ask that you send them in ahead of time either by snail mail or e-mail.Oh! So many things to remember that are important! Here are some little TIPS:
Fill out an entry form, COMPLETELY, and scan your 2015 APBA card and club card on the entry form, then make copies. Or, visit the scorer at check in on the following day and ASK for a couple of entry blanks and to use the imprinter. You can then imprint your card on the entry blanks and keep them for future races. All you have to do when you go to the race is fill in the date and location. If you scan your information into your computer you can even e-mail your entry to the scorer. On the APBA website, if you go to Resources and pull down that tab you can find the entry blank. Fill if out and bring it with you, email it to the scorer on the sanction or you can send it snail
mail to the address on the sanction. This will also save you time at the race site. PLEASE, if you need to have a physical, make sure that it is up to date. If it is not on your APBA card, please bring a copy to the race with you. We can send it to headquarters for you AND if you give us $10, we will send it with our paper work and request that they issue you a new card with the corrected information. You then will have all the information on your card. It is that EASY!!! Another complaint this pass season came from scorers that scored multiple category races. They were unable to read some of the numbers on many of the Inboards. PLEASE follow the rules that are written for your category. When a “minor” is doing capsule training this year, a minor release must be completed. You can get the minor release off the APBA website.

Plan on renewing your membership early. Send it in by February 28, 2015 or you will not get the discount for early renewal. Be sure to fill out the membership form completely, DON’T forget to sign the back and a witness is also needed. Send to Headquarters with the correct amount of money and other information needed for your APBA card (physical and/or capsule certification). You can also do this on the APBA website (apba.org). Don’t forget a minor release must be filled out for any member under the age of 18. You can join APBA at the race site on race day BUT remember it will cost you a NASTY late fee. You will not be able to use your Visa, Master Card, Discover or American Express card (or anyone else), at the race sites. You will be saying later, “I wish I had joined earlier. If I had I would have that extra cash to use for the weekend, or that extra entry fee.” Please bring your old APBA membership card if you decide to join at

a race site. It helps the scorer and APBA, since all the information is on that card and just needs to be updated.
Remember owner/drivers, it is your responsibility to see that all of your crew members have joined APBA and signed the Waiver and Release Form. After they have signed, they will be given a wristband. This helps with many things. First, it proves that the Waiver and Release has been signed. Second, it lets the volunteers at the event know that you and your crew belong in the pit area. A reminder to some of the scorers that work outside of their regions, keep in close contact with the Race Chairman. They have a wealth of information about their event, especially if they have special awards that are presented at their race. It will give you a heads up on gathering whatever information is needed. The National Meeting is being held January 21 to January 25,2014 at The
Sheraton Detroit Metro Airport, in Detroit, Michigan. There will be a shuttle service from the airport to hotel. If you have any ideas that you would like the Scoring Committee to address, please contact or forward them to us. Better yet, join us in Detroit and meet us, we are always open to suggestions to better our committee. Hope to see you there!
Remember officials, the referee, scorer and inspector test must be taken each year. These test are usually prepared at the National Meeting. You must take the test before you can be put on the sanction for a race. This allows for on-line sanctions to have the most current information. Take the test EARLY so you do not hold up the sanction for a race committee. Have a GREAT HOLIDAY and a SAFE 2015 RACING SEASON. SEE YOU AT THE RACES.

2014 was a full-throttle Inboard racing season, from the Thanksgiving race in Parker, Ariz., to the Lake Ming Shootout and Lake Minden Classic, featuring Crackerboxes and other flatbottom classes in last-minute California competition. We began and ended our Inboard season with the roar of flatbottoms, while we see mostly hydroplane competition in this part of the country. I wish I could make it to all the races. I heard great things about Long Beach, Bakersfield, the Western Divisionals in Spanaway, Wash., and many others.

I can’t say I have a personal favorite event. Some of the races I am lucky enough to attend were : Walled Lake Thunder, the
Quake on the Lake, Celina, Ohio, the APBA /IRC Driving School and Region 6 Test & Tune in Dayton, Ohio, APBA Gold Cup and Wildwood, NJ. It’s great to see new drivers attend a driving school and then launch their racing careers. As you know, the action on the water is the tip of the iceberg. Behind the scenes, it takes nonstop planning, building, tweaking and improvising all year long for us to enjoy those high-adrenaline moments. And, of course, a driver has to log a lot of highway miles before he hits the water. Many of our top contenders made it to about a race a week all summer. That takes dedication, teamwork and a very understanding family.

We saw competitive fields in most classes in 2014, always a good sign. Also, the action was pretty balanced between east and west coast teams. We have strong hydroplane and runabout contingents nationwide, and they are willing to go the distance to compete. That’s what makes champions. Congratulations to our 2014 Inboard National Champions; a lot of inspiration and perspiration went into your accomplishments. We look forward to honoring you at the National Meeting at the Inboard Banquet and, for a deserving few, at the APBA Hall of Champions.

As the 2014 season quickly comes to a close, many are already planning for another exciting season of Stock Outboard racing for 2015. I am constantly amazed at how fast time goes by as season after season adds up to a lifetime of amazing experiences. Our past Winter Nationals in Jesup, Ga., and Summer Nationals in Moses Lake, Wash., are now just great memories. Already our friends in Region 12 are planning our next Winter Nationals in Bakersfield, Calif. With former commissioner Jeff Conant stepping aside to be the region activity chairman, David Hale steps up to the plate to represent the Southern California region as their new commissioner and will play a big part in the upcoming Nationals. What great strides these gentlemen have made to keep the sport alive in their area. When you get a chance, give them a pat on the back. They surely deserve it. At the same time our Badger State group in Region 7 are planning our return to Wakefield, Mich., this summer. With many in the club moving away or retiring, Badger State has gone through a lot of changes since the last race in Wakefield. One sign of a very strong club is when those in the background for years step up to the plate and take on the leadership when it is needed most. With Darrel Ludwig as commodore and Don Allen as the sole commissioner, we all can breathe a sigh of relief and know our return to the Upper Peninsula is in very capable hands.
In the next few days our 2015 racing commission will be formed and we will hit the ground running with much debate via email and phone conferences to plan our National Meeting agenda for Detroit in January. Now is the time to speak with your newly elected commissioners on what you would like to see change in our rules.

The season started off in Parker, Ariz., for the SCSC Thanksgiving Regatta. Heath Heibert piloted the 369 boat to first place finish starting the season off in great fashion. The GN’S headed back to Parker in April for the Spring Classic, this is where the 44 took the victory on Saturday. Sunday was canceled due to high wind. Next up was Burley, Idaho. Two new boats came on scene and showed they had the stuff to compete as Paul Fitzgerald took the win on Saturday. Unfortunately not enough boats could make the start, so the final race was cut to 10 laps.
When the teams showed up to Long Beach for the Nationals, there were 10 boats lined up and ready to race. All were inspired to race and win the famous Rudy Ramos Memorial Trophy. Dave Rankin driving the GN44 boat had a great
weekend winning both heats on Saturday and leading all 20 laps of the main race on Sunday. Dave captured the team’s first ever National Title. Andy Barker and Lance Haselrig rounded out the podium at Long Beach.
The season wrapped up at the San Diego Bayfair race. Only five teams made the trip and racing was very competitive. Once again it was Dave and the GN44 boat in front and taking the checkered flag. Congratulations to all the teams that put in the hard work and effort to show up at the races and give the fans a great show. Hopefully we can make next season even better. The Comp Jets had a great season with a lot of racing action throughout the year. Owner of the CJ-60 boat Shirl Dickey won the Idaho Cup in Burley and ended up taking the top spot in points.

Many of the High Point Championships were hotly contested this year and a few were not decided until the last weekend of racing at Tabor City, NC. Austin VanOver and George Ford went head to head in 850ccMH with Austin holding off George for the High Point Championship. Austin’s father Eric is this year’s High Point Champion in 500ccMR and 750ccMH. Eric battled throughout the weekend with Jerry Davids, Jr. to decide the winner of the Bob Goller award for the most points in all classes. By the end of the weekend Jerry was ahead of Eric by 426 points, winning the award with more than 19,000 total points. Jerry is also this year’s High Point title holder in 350ccMH and the winner of the Paul Kalb award for the most points in a single class. The 850ccMR title was also decided at Tabor City. Brian Boyd from Beaver Creek, Ohio, was trailing Karl Dyle, this year’s National Champion in 850ccMR from Jupiter, FL. By the end of the weekend, Brian had won over Karl by enough to take the High Point Championship by 106 points. Brian is also this year’s High Point champion in 350ccMR and 750ccMR. Other High Point Championships that were decided before the last weekend of the season were 200ccMR and 200ccMH – Mike Bartlett, 250ccMR – Austin Duggan, 250ccMH – Tom Sutherland and 500ccMH – J. Michael Kelly.
Topping off the 2014 end of the year awards, Modified will induct three members into the Hall of Champions. They are Mike Bartlett with one National Championship and two High Point Championships, Brian Boyd with three High Point Championships and J. Michael Kelly with a National Championship, a High Point Championship and a Competition Record. Congratulations.

> Participating in five races all throughout the state of Michigan, the Super Light Tunnel Boats had a season to remember in 2014, that was filled with excitement, passion and lots of racing.
Kicking off their season at Walled Lake Thunder in Walled Lake, Michigan, it was Jeff Howie in the experimental class who took a first place and earned 400 points. Due to weather, Sunday was blown out and nobody was able to race.
Next up on the SLT circuit was the APBA Detroit Gold Cup. Competing on the Detroit River is a dream scenario for these drivers, as the rough waters really show off ones driving ability. Participating on both Saturday and Sunday, Bandit and Experimental drivers shined and kept the crowd entertained and engaged between the Unlimited heats. James Yacko showed off his driving ability as he took first place on both days in the Bandit class earning 800 total points. In the Experimental Class, it was a four team battle that had John Heuninck take a first on Saturday and Jeff Howie take a first on Sunday.
Returning to the Detroit River just seven days later for the 64th Annual Trenton Roar on the River, it was James Yacko who cleaned up in the Bandit class taking a first place finish on both days; with Jeff Howie taking a first in Experimental on Saturday and John Heuninck taking a second place on Sunday. A month later the SLT crew traveled up to Indian River for the Marathon Nationals. As he had done all season, it was James Yacko and his rider Jayson Greene who took a first place finish in the Bandit Class on Saturday, running the course in just under 55 total minutes, while John Heuninck and Megan Nolan took a first place finish in Experimental on Saturday with a total time of one hour, three minutes and thirty-seven seconds. The two teams would go on to claim the SLT Marathon National Championship.
Headed into the final race of the season at Braw Beese Lake in Hillsdale, Mich., Yacko would again take a first place finish on Saturday, this time in the Outlaw Class. On Sunday it was Leo Hallenbeck who

would surpass Yacko and finish with a first place finish. As they had done all season, Steve Heuninck and Jeff Howie split first place finishes, however it would be Steve’s son John who would come out ahead and win a High Points title.

The October article talked about the changes made to the OPC National Championship format for 2014. In the absence of one National Championship, the OPC rule book allows separate sites to sanction a National Championship for individual classes. These bids were reviewed by the OPC Commission and successfully run this past August and September. Mod U and Formula 100 ran in Minnesota at the Ron Baker Memorial Regatta. Powerboat Nationals ran the SST-120 and SST-60 Nationals in Rising Sun, Ind. Sport Series hosted the SST-45 Nationals; where 18 boat6s vied for the SST-45 title, congratulations to Mark Schmerebauch. APR hosted the SST200 Nationals. I am sorry to say that the Sport C Nationals were cancelled due to bad weather. Gosh, California has really had some crazy weather this past year and that is coming from a person who has been through over seven hurricanes down here in Florida. I know this publication of Propeller is showing all the National Champions so I suggest you look there for all the good tidbits. Next month we all come together at the APBA Annual Meeting in Detroit, Mich. I know the OPC commission will work hard to come up with a good, solid and workable plan for the 2015 OPC racing season. This is a sport we all love and we need to work together to make it long

OFFSHORE To the non-racing public, offshore racing is one of the more well-known forms of power boat racing. Offshore racing with APBA was very active in 2014. APBA sanctioned 13 offshore races in five states. Offshore racers competed for national high points in California, Florida, Maryland, Michigan and New Jersey. I wish thank the groups whose hard work allowed these races to take place. Let me start with the busiest person in U.S. offshore racing: Ed “Smitty” Smith. Under Smitty’s leadership, the Offshore Performance Association (OPA) ran a full set of classes at six events. OPA sanctioned APBA races in New

The PRO Category continues to face many challenges as we end 2014 and head into the 2015 season. The PRO Commission is very aware and engaged with ideas and planning to help the category grow at both the local and national level. We were fortunate enough to be invited back to Kingston, Tenn., this year to put on the PRO Nationals and had a good turnout of boats and crowned 13 National Champions. In mid-October Lincoln City, Ore., saw a total 11 new records set for either Kilo or ¼ mile straightaway. We ended the season with the UIM / APBA World Championships in 0125, 0250, 175H and 1100H down in Lake Alfred, FL. Race for the Kids put on a great event. Congratulations to Todd Anderson and Amy Nydahl, the 2014 World Champions in 175H and 1100H. APBA was able to live stream the event and I was told that we had about 1700 people watching.On the local level PRO classes have been added to most outboard race sanctions on the west and east coasts,

While we were in Florida at the Worlds we were all devastated at the news that we had lost Nic Thompson after a long hard fought health battle this past year. Nic was hurt 10 years ago in a testing accident. He never lost his love for racing and continued to support the sport on the judge’s stand and by entertaining us all in the pits. He will be truly missed and never forgotten. Our prayers are with the Thompson/Eldredge/Sailor family.

As our 2014 season has drawn to a close, we can all look back on a very successful year. We have seen growth in the Junior Classes numbers and a number of brand new racers on the water. We saw our first ever UIM J-Hydro World Championship race in 2014, that was supported by international participation. We saw a maximum “tuck” rule implemented in J-Hydro that did not cause the end of the world as we knew it. We saw records fall and champions crowned. But most of all, we saw some terrific racing in 2014, and some amazing growth in driver skills; which is exactly what the APBA Junior Classes are all about. I’m really excited about the 2015 season. Our Junior Classes Committee is already looking at lessons learned in the past season and is ready to grow all of our Junior Classes and continue on the path we started on in 2014. More races, more racers and better competition for all. On behalf of the Junior Classes committee, here’s wishing to a great holiday season, and a successful and safe 2015 racing season.

REGION 1
Starting off the racing season in Region 1 with a bang, the Hall Cook O’Connor Memorial Regatta was home to the Stock, Mod and Junior Classes Northeast Divisionals, and eight different drivers were crowned Northeast Divisional Champions.
Kneel down racing dominated the races in Region 1, as all five of their races consisted of PRO, Mod, Stock and Junior Classes racing. With races in Standish, ME., Milton, NH., Thompson, CT., Tauton, MA., and Kingston, NH., it was a full slate of kneel down racing. Taking place at least once a month from May to September, the racing action in Region 1 was nonstop and next season looks to be even better.
REGION 2
With four events taking place in Region 2, One Inboard race, two Vintage and one outboard, while there wasn’t a ton of action in Region 2, it was competitive, fun and exciting.
It all started with the Clayton Vintage Race Boat Regatta in August. Since 1992 Clayton, NY., has hosted this biannual event. The Clayton Vintage Race Boat Regatta has brought together some of the greatest names in racing and likewise many of the most famous boats of all time, and this year was no different. This year there was much more pageantry surrounding the Vintage Race Boat Regatta than ever before. Featuring around 60 boats, the Vintage Race Boat Regatta also featured Jersey Speed Skiffs, Canadiana, Miss Canada IV and a plethora of other boats. Over the years the Vintage Race Boat Regatta has given owners, drivers, historians and the public an opportunity to see the greatest boats of all time
REGION 3
It has been an exciting year for the members of Region 3. An old race site came alive again in June, thanks to Jay Hardy and Katelyn Shaw. They worked with the West Milford Volunteer Fire Department and once again boats roared off Brown’s Point on Greenwood Lake. They had the largest field of boats than any other inboard event in the region. The Greenwood Lake Power Boat Association is working on the 2015 event and are looking forward to next year.
Racing also continued at our other venues. Stocks and Mods ran in Lock Haven, Penn., twice; Millville, NJ., twice; and a new stop in Berwick, Penn., The Inboard also ran at Mays Landing, NJ., and Wildwood, NJ. For the first time in many years, the Offshore Category held two

events in Region 3. It is great to have them join us, hopefully, they will continue to be with us for many years to come. Thanks to all the clubs and volunteers who do an outstanding job to make these events happen each year.
This year we also had some new drivers hit the water. Johnny Cron raced with the Stock Outboards this year in JSH, AXH and AXR. He had a great first season. Katelyn Shaw joined the J & J Marine tribe. After watching her brothers for years, she decided to give it a try. She drove the SE-29 to a 4th place national finish. Katelyn also drove the T-350 for Ed Thompson, doing just as well. Hanna Clauss also drove several heats in the Sportsman Entry class and did a great job. John Shaw thought he would try his skills with a stock outboard. In Millville, he drove in the BSH class for George Stillwill and placed 1st, his first time in the

Just one week later Pro Stock and Sportsman Entry boats made their 2014 debut in Region 2 by racing on the Niagara River in Tonawanda, NY. Gregory Baker and his team cleaned up in Tonawanda by taking first place finishes on both days of racing; while it was Parks Jones Jr., who took first place in Pro Stock and earned 100 points. Three weeks later and 15 minutes up the road the Vintage boats returned to the Niagara River for the Niagara Frontier Boat Show and Race Boat Reunion. Participants came from all over the country to get on the water swap stories and show of their restored masterpieces.
For Region 2’s final race of the season, Stock, mod and Junior Classes racers took to Redwood, NY., for the Crystal Lake Regatta on Sept. 13 and 14. With racers competing for the chance to win a High Point Championship late in the season, all bets were off as the races too to the water.
boat. John also had the chance to drive an A-Stock Hydro for Bill Scully. We are looking forward to seeing these drivers on the water next season. At both Greenwood Lake and Mays Landing, the Garvey Class joined us as a special event. Garvey’s are a two seat, flat bottom scow that is configured like a Jersey Skiff. They are a welcome addition to our events, as they brought some great people, exciting racing, and the spectators enjoyed watching this group. We hope they will continue to run with us.
Each of the Inboard events awards a special trophy. At Greenwood Lake, the Jim McLean Memorial Trophy, (awarded to the owner of the boat that comes closest to a record) was given to Willard Wilson. At Mays Landing, the Daniel J. Murphy, Jr. Memorial Award (outstanding performance, sportsmanship, and

appearance and respect for the tradition of powerboat racing) was given to John Shaw. The Wildwood Governor’s Cup (outstanding performance), was earned by the JS-72 team, Trevor Kirsh and the Stewart family. Congratulations to all. As for our old timers.
Stock and Mod Outboards Region 3:
Dylan Runne won the Nationals in Moses Lake in his ASR. He also had a 2nd in the BSR and a 3rd in BSH at the Nationals. Billy Simmons has 1st place high points in the ASR. Michael Thierfelder, 2nd place high points in the 250 CCHM and AJ Jennings placing in the top 5 in 500CCMH. Inboard Region 3:
John Shaw, once again, driving Willard Wilson’s 2.5 Stock won the Nationals, in Waterford, MI. John also had a great weekend at Hampton, VA, taking the Eastern Divisional title in both 1.5 Litre Stock Hydro (Hagatha) and 2.5 Litre Stock Hydro (Wilson). He also set the ¼ mile record in New Martinsville, WV at 100.2 mph. In NM, Thom Heins, driving for Budget Buster Racing, place 4th this season in national high points. He also set a record in Lakeland, FL., at 102.087.
In 2.5 Stock, Gene DeFalco, placed 1st in national points. Willard Wilson and Al Thompson also finished in the top five in the class. These guys had a tremendous season.

Consistently throughout the 2014 season, races were held in Region 4. Ending at the same place they began, Tabor City, NC., was home to the Stock, Mod and Junior Classes Southeast Divisionals

Over all….Region 3 did a fantastic job this season. Have a safe off season and hopefully we will see you in Detroit at the National Meeting. Contact your commissioners (Alex Jennings III – Mod Outboard, Ed Runne – Stock Outboard, or Dave Shaw – Inboard) with any concerns you would like brought to the National Meeting. The Region 3 Inboard Awards Banquet, will be on Feb. 21, 2015, capsule training will be available. Details will be mailed after Christmas. The Outboard Awards ceremony is tentatively scheduled for February 8, details will follow as the plans are finalized. The 2015 racing season will be upon us soon. We look forward to some great racing and a new addition to a great family. Congratulations to A.J. Jennings and Morgan Pomphrey who will welcome a new J Stock driver in the spring. Hosting two more races before the Annual New Martinsville Records Challenge and Regatta, the racing never seemed to stop in Region 4, and with 13 records being broken and set in New Martinsville, the High Points and Hall of Champions picture was starting to look a lot clearer. However it wouldn’t be until the last race of the season when it would all be settled in Tabor City, NC., for the Tabor City 2014 Halloween Regatta on Oct. 25th. For drivers chasing a High Point Title in Stock, Mod and the Junior Classes, it would all come to an end at this race. Inboards, ACHA and OPC in Stuart, Fl. last May. That was a lot of different categories running together successfully for some “hold your breath racing”. I know because I was watching them and

Our Region 5 Annual meeting will be a busy one this year as we have active representation from Stock, Mod, PRO, OPC, Inboard, Vintage, J and P1 Superstock. It is a fun day to meet with good friends and plan for next year. Many of us will travel to Detroit, MI. for the APBA Annual Meeting in January as Region 5 claims the OPC Chairman and commissioners from 4 categories and
a member of the Board of Directors. I think that speaks well for this Region as our members don’t sit around complaining about what “THEY” do right or wrong, we get out and work to make it better. OK…now for a little championship bragging. The APR series in OPC acknowledges 3 series champions in the 3 classes they run. In 2014 they ALL CAME FROM REGION 5. Carole Reno is the APR SST 60 Series Champion, Mike Floyd is the APR SST 120 Series Champion and Rob Rinker
is the APR SST 200 Series Champion. Congratulations to all 3 of you. Rob Rinker won the SST 200 Nationals in New Martinsville, WV. in September. I know he lives in Arizona now, but Bruce Washburn is still a Floridian at heart, so I will claim his Mod U National Championship win in Minnesota as a Region 5 honor !! It’s Holiday Time, a time for celebration with family and friends, after all, Thanksgiving has just gone by, with family feasts, deer hunts, perhaps the first snows of the coming winter, and the downer, Black Friday. Next, the Yuletide, the season for gift giving, parties, Santa Claus, and returning the gifts that don’t quite fit. It doesn’t stop there, how could it, with New Year Eve fireworks and maybe fire water. Good thing that stuff is at the end of the month, gives one time to get in shape. One such festive occasion will be the December Marine Prop Rider meeting, which for the past few years has been an annual potluck (read this as bring something) foodfest with club meeting to follow, in the hallowed halls of the APBA Headquarters in Eastpointe, Mich., (Nine Mile Road, east of Gratiot, west of I-94, Stars and Stripes out front), a great chance to mingle and gaze upon the artifacts in the APBA Museum area. Check the MPR website (marinepropriders.com) for details. Some region personals: Fearless Fred is 88. Peggy Kanard and Fred Alter hosted their fall party the second weekend of October; balloons, cake, presents, adult beverages, hot dogs, sunny skies and Fred were featured... Another boat racer is a Hall of Famer. Mark Weber was inducted into the

Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame on 02November2014, joining a fair number of boat racers, many of whom just happen to be Region 6 racers. Congratulations, Mark, from all of us, boat racing gets recognized in the motorsports world after all.. Good to see at the meeting is Jeff Williams, with whit intact which so endears him to us all. Big congratulations go to the Y-1 Fast Eddie Too of Jim and Jules Sechler, with Dan Kanfoush piloting, as at New Martinsville they set a remarkable 115 mph quarter mile straightaway speed record. That record is 5 mph faster than the long time kilo record for 2.5L Stocks, set a while ago by Dutch Squires, and broke their previous record, by this writer’s SWAG, by at least 3 mph, which is not merely breaking a record, but smashing it. Congrats also to another record setter, namely Tom Johnston, in 350CC Mod Hydro.
The Region 6 Fall Meeting took place Saturday and Sunday, October 18th and 19th, at the Holiday Inn – French Quarter in Perrysburg, Ohio. While chilly outside, the committee and facet meetings found warm and friendly conditions prevailing inside. You want details? Here are some. Saturday: the Inboard Race chairman’s meeting Saturday morning found 15 attendees discussing the 2014 regattas and ways to improve operations. The group
also reviewed the initiative of the MACH Series to promote boat race events in the National Speedway Directory, begun in 2014 by MACH and One Way Racing (Cadi and Eli), with support from the IRC (Mark Weber), finds that continuation of the relationship into 2015 is favorable. Todd McQuade cited information that at least 20 new fans came to the Walled Lake race simply by seeing the race info on the SpeedwaysOnline.com website, which is a good example of how the directory can work. The race sites are asked to participate with MACH this year, possibly to help share cost and to get good information into the publishers by December 1, 2014, to meet deadlines (we were late for 2014, leading to some confusion, but good ad content). This directory and website lists event location, race dates, times, and other details, usable info for fans and participants alike. This initial involvement with the Directory has resulted in the addition of a boat racing section to the directory. It was suggested that similar opportunity exists for the IRC, EPIC Series, and APBA itself to use this “open door” for boat racing into the motorsports main stream at reasonable cost, which could even include web radio shows (Walled Lake was featured on one broadcast in June 2014.). An inboard class meeting should be mentioned, as a number of 5L Stock

class owners and drivers met Saturday afternoon to discuss the ramifications of the coming race year changes. Their meeting lasted pretty close to 3 hours, so all got a chance to give input. Kudos to Jeff Sankuer for bringing the guys together (and Mario Maraldo for loaning them the Grand Prix Meeting Room).
Shortly after high noon, the Saturday afternoon meetings began with the Inboard Officiating Committee, led by long time racing official Rick Falcinelli, where discussion featured the need for scorers in the region, and nuances of the Assistant Risk Manager. The long ARM of the law? Not at all, need to get away from that attitude; Ray Dong eloquently reminded all that “no jerk’s” be used as an ARM, as the damage that can be done by having the wrong person on that job, even if a test has been passed, is potentially irreversible for a race committee. Rick Falcinelli was reelected as committee chair.
The Region 6 Officials Meeting followed, with talks regarding Outboard clock operation and warm up periods, with advice to take the matter to the steering committee at the National Meeting in order to unify rules and procedures within the categories. News for inspectors, Digatron has a new fuel meter and will no longer be offering support for the DT-15 and the DT-47, spare parts to fix an old one might be problematic. The new FT-64 meter will also test the temperature of the fuel. The commissions will be discussing this prior to the national meeting. ARM (see above) discussion continued; next February, at the region Spring meeting, the Saturday morning Inboard Race Chairperson Meeting will feature a seminar and training session for the ARM, prospective ARM’s are urged to attend regardless of category (hint to race committees, start recruiting), the afternoon Officiating meeting will take tests that are available. Election results: Chair – Mary Williams; Director – Rich Evans; Alt. Director – Ron Snyder. The Club meeting featured reports from the MHRA, Three Rivers, Powerboat
Nationals, Marine Prop Riders, Rocky Fork Thunder, and River Rats (Dayton) clubs. A couple new venues will be racing in 2015, but two old venues will not be racing. Jennifer Falcinelli spoke of the MPR online membership Early Bird drive. The special program (booster.com) nets funds for sponsors, might be a good way for clubs to make some extra $$$ to support operations (see below). Election results: Chair – Jennifer Falcinelli; Director – Mark Wheeler; Alt. Director – Tom Swindling.
Category meetings began with PRO, where 2015 plans were announced to race PRO antiques at a pair of Alexandria, Kentucky events in conjunction with Three Rivers and IOA clubs, and a pair of PRO Hydro classes (125 and 250) at the Franklin, Pa. regatta next Memorial Day weekend. Good to have PRO more active in the region. Election results: Chair – Mike Thirlby; Director – Jeff Williams (who on Sunday resigned to be director for Mod, a replacement will be named later by the region chair); Commissioner – Mike Thirlby. Sunday: more category meetings. Inboard – moment of silence fell a little heavy on the group, as this past year has seen the passing of a couple inboarders who were very instrumental regionally, Rich Willim and Tim Hueston. Gotta also mention Terry Reinhart, who succumbed to stroke complications recently; she was the wife of Gold Cup race communications guru Paul Reinhart, who fixes racing radios in the confines of Kevin Gilday’s radio trailer. On a little brighter note, Beth Gilday (the other half of the Gilday’s) recently competed in the Boston Marathon, finishing very well in her classification. Dayton (Ohio): Steve Spisak reported of the testing and APBA Inboard School – 2014. The new River Rats Racing Club’s initial foray into running the event was successful, 16 drivers graduated. Good boat count; all accounts settled. For 2015, tentative dates are April 25th and 26th, 2015. Walled Lake (Michigan): Todd McQuade reported that losing Sunday to wind was the only detraction from the

2014 edition of Walled Lake Thunder. The dates for 2015 are June 13th and 14th, 2015, similar format expected. Waterford (Michigan): Mary Ann Wilson reported that the Quake 16 Inboard Nationals was a success, with 59 total boat participating (race and vintage). Spotty weather in the surrounding area led to some decrease in attendance and receipts. Quake 17 will again feature the Inboard Nationals, dates are July 18th and 19th, 2015, with additional activities possible on Friday, July 17th, 2015.Rocky Fork (Ohio): Dean Armstrong reported that a slow start on Friday led to completion of Saturday’s racing on Sunday morning; only a couple heats for the Sunday program were completed due to strong breezes which arose by noontime, leading to cancellation of the rest of Sunday. Additional volunteers this year helped, specifically cited was Brittany Kuhr with friends from her church, who put on an excellent pit party picnic Saturday evening. Dates for the coming year are September 19th and 20th, 2015. Celina (Ohio): Scott Anderson reported that the 2014 Ohio Governor’s Cup was a good event, even with boat count down, as competitors put on a great show. The park area is increasing, which will allow more family friendly attractions to be included in the event. Planned dates are August 22nd and 23rd, 2015. Gold Cup: No info for 2015 is yet available, as planning continues. Date will be in late August, a move made to help out the city of Detroit and to help out the Gold Cup business plan. There is a multi-year contract in place to hold the Gold Cup in Detroit, so this is a long term deal aimed at success.
MACH (Ray Dong, Tom Swindlng): 2014 was an interesting year, successful overall, with 8 days of full racing (out of 10 planned) and 2 partial days (single classes), the loss of race time being weather related. The point fund total for 2014 will be $13,650 (down from 2013 a little due to schedule); checks will be mailed out prior to Dec. 31, 2014. Trophy recognition will take place at the APBA Region 6 Banquet February 14, 2015 at the spring meeting.

MACH racing occurred for the first time at Hampton, Virginia, where 60-percent of the participants were MACH regulars. Appreciation goes to the Chris Baumann Family and the main sponsors for their support for MACH. The New Martinsville event had some problems, but these are being dealt with by the race committee. Kudos were given to the MACH participants at NMWVa, (Y,E, and Vintage) for their cooperative efforts which enabled their classes to run.
Box 21: Dave Noble thanked racers and races for a safe season, without incident. Boring is good. Thanks was expressed to Jim Sechler for the jetski engine rebuild and to Marty Hammersmith for donation of driver safety equipment for dunk testing. The Saturday / Sunday morning dunk tests found 7 candidates wet (6 on Saturday, 1 on Sunday). The spring 2015 meeting sessions should be busy.
Jennifer Falcinelli introduced all to the 2015 Marine Prop Riders Early Bird Online Membership Drive, featuring a package of membership and t-shirt for a bargain price. The drive has already started and goes until the end of November. The t-shirts feature the slogan “If you haven’t raced in Region 6, you haven’t raced.”
Elections results: Inboard Chairman – Don (Eli) Whitney; Director – Steve Spisak; Alternate Director – Rich Falcinelli. IRC Commissioner: Marty Hammersmith (took three ballots to break a tie). The Inboard facet goes on record to recommend that the IRC Chairman appoint Rich Falcinelli to the IRC, as it is evident that the membership considers him to be worthy of the job. Mod Outboard – 12 members participating, the meeting began with race reports: MHRA – Jon Schwartz reported that they had 3 races with racer schools and had good attendance. TRORA – Jeff Williams reported that they were weathered out at Delaware, had good attendance at Franklin, and Akron was cancelled due to the sponsor moving the

date to the nationals weekend so there was no race. They are planning a spring race at Alexandria, KY. The Modified Divisionals which were originally awarded to Akron, Ohio were held at Alexandria, KY. Also they are looking at a site at Indian Lake for a race in June. IOA – Jeff Williams reported they had 2 Hillsdale races and Alexandria, KY race which was the Modified Divisionals. DAYTON – Tom Sutherland reported that Dayton was a record race. Tracy pointed out that all rules were followed. Technical news: Jeff Williams passed around a new head that the MORC is considering for the Yamato 80, where an 18 mm head is converted it to a 14 mm head. The insert is welded in and cannot be removed. Tom Johnston reported that he does have parts available for the 80 motors. Elections: Chairman – Tom Sutherland; Director – Jeff Williams; Alt. Stock Outboard – 2014 chair Tracy Trolian presiding, with 21 members in attendance, race reports commenced: MHRA – Jon Schwartz reported that they had 4 races and 3 racers school. They averaged 100 entries per day. The Stock and Marathon divisional were held at the July Grass Lake. They also loaned out their racer school equipment to IOA for a racers school. Idea for clubs holding schools: hold a drawing at a show display with the prize being a driving school scholarship. MHRA has done this successfully, builds interest. TRORA – Jeff Williams reported that Delaware was weathered out. They had a good turnout at Franklin. Akron was lost due to a sponsor issue (sponsor moved the date which conflicts with the Mod Nationals). They will be moving the Delaware race to Alexandria, KY. This will be the first weekend in May and will have testing on Friday and then regular racing for the weekend, couple PRO classes included. A new site at Indian Lake (Ohio) is in negotiations now. Franklin will be on Memorial Day weekend, including PRO 125 and 250 Hydros. TORC – Tom
Johnston reported that Trenton had a marathon on both days. DAYTON – Tom Johnston reported that they had a good race and set several records. IOA – Jeff Williams reported that they ran selected stocks at several of their sites. Discussion was held on if IOA could list all stock classes to get more racers. Tom Sutherland will mention this to IOA. TOP’O MICHIGAN– Tom Johnston reported the boat count was down in the smaller classes. Mark Kurz reported that they may have to look at adjusting starting times so they don’t have two-way traffic on Sunday on the river. Region 6 Hall of Fame nominations are due by December 31st to the Chairman; Don Allen Service Award nominations are due to Mary Williams by December 31st. Technicals: Tom Johnston reported that Ric Montoya has received parts and is planning to order motors. Discussion was held on the parts swap for the 302SS motors. Tom Johnston reported that the swap will be for the tower housing with the new 321 motors. MHRA Spring Banquet – MHRA is planning to discuss a suggestion to combine their spring meeting with the Region meeting. A one word addition to the region bylaws was approved (Bylaw Article #8-2-c), consisting of adding the word “email” to the communication methods used for notifying racers of changes to race circulars. Race sites which might want other division or another club, a procedure is in place to cover this. The change recommended is to add “email” to the list communication methods. Region 6

Region 7 was a hotbed for boat racing in 2014, hosting categories from everything from the Junior Classes all the way to the Unlimiteds; Region 7 had it all.
Beginning their racing season in mid-May with Powerboat Days 2014 in Pell Lake, Wisc., the circular had PRO, Mod, Stock and Junior Classes up for racing. The competition was fierce as most of the drivers were knocking off the rust. Drivers like Brian Palmquist, Ed Hearn, Devin Huff and Jared Pavlick were all in top

The 2014 Region 10 Meeting and Banquet took place on November 1st at the Tacoma LaQuinta Inn. With Jan Shaw having just been elected to the APBA Board of Directors, Jan resigned her Region Chairmanship and an election was held for her uncompleted term. Rick Sandstrom was elected to complete Jan’s two year term. Rick brings a wealth of experience in the position, having served as Region chairman in the early 1970s, APBA Vice President and President in the 1970s, extensive involvement in the APBA Historical Society, and most recently, heading up APBA’s Insurance Committee. Our region is fortunate to have an

Seattle Inboard Racing Association was the host club for this year’s meeting and banquet, and Dave Cossette and his group did a great job of hosting an enjoyable evening. As always, the highlight of the evening was the awarding of the George Babcock Awards for outstanding driver performance, one in outboard, one in Inboard. The outboard winner was J. Michael Kelly, who, between driving Unlimiteds and a 5-litre, managed to find time to win four outboard region high point championships (20SSH, CSH, 45SST and 500ccMH), as well as “running

In the Inboards, it was Josh Harnack, who stormed back in 2014 in the “Mr. Jiggs” National Mod hull, after severe damage to the hull in 2013 shortened their season last year. This year, Team Harnack started off by setting a new competition record, then battled the remainder of the season against a tough field of boats, including the Bertrams’ “Hey Jude.” For drivers in Region 10, winning a Babcock award is the highest Regional Achievement in racing, and is almost as significant as getting in APBA’s Hall of Champions.

The Inboard schedule starts soon with Lawrence Lake in the spring and ends with Lake Sammamish in the fall. In the middle of the jam packed season, we will have the Inboard Western Divisional race at Black Lake in July, so another good season for us ahead. Michelle Curry came to the meeting and wanted to see more about who we are and what we do. She is the promoter/sponsor head chief in charge of the new event at Oak Harbor. A second year just ahead for the Pirates and the race just north of Seattle and also a second year in eastern Washington at our new site in Manson with Julie Porter and her crew for Seattle Inboard and John Walcker. Jeff Bernard continues to work on the training boat program for the spring here in Region 10. Probably to be held at American Lake, more to come.

in the Stock-Mod-Junior Classes Nationals at Moses Lake, Wash. Sister Pamela, “The Fast Lady” produced a 4th place finish in the Nationals.
Richard Fuchslin took his 750cc Hydro and 850cc Runabout north to the Nationals and came home with very respectful 3rd and 4th place finishes respectively. It probably helped having Pat “the Rocket” Brians and J W “J Dub” Myers at the wheel. For those of you who know Richard, you can understand his impish smile in commending his drivers on a great job. He himself was one happy camper. Steve Walde who already held the title to the Sport C ¼ mile straight away record set in Lincoln City, Oregon turned in a speed of 60.525 at Oroville, Calif.
We lost Bob West, the father of the West Brothers Racing Team on March 31, 2014. He will be remembered by the many who knew and loved him. Gilbert Solis came back to the fold in an SST-45 boat after a hiatus from his Sport C boat which he ran for about seven years back in the day.
On the weekend of May 17th and 18th, the East Bay Boat Club participated in the Northern California Solar Regatta at Rancho Seco, Calif. The sponsoring body for this event is the Sacramento Municipal Utility District and focused on youth from grades 7 through 12 and as well as community college, college and university levels. Thanks to Jean MacKay Schwartz of the East Bay Boat Club for coordinating this one for the racers. Thanks, too, for the Wilde Bunch, Steve Pamela and Vicky. Also helping in this one were Bobby Joe Finkbohnner and Brian Schmeltz. The Northern California Outboard Association put on its first race of their season at Lake Minden near Nicolaus, California on the weekend of May31st through June 1st and attracted racers from Northern and Southern California, Arizona and Nevada. The new Region 11 safety/patrol boat, christened “The Dan Schwartz” in Dan’s
honor, had made its debut at the Time trials; it was launched and performed well throughout he event. This regatta had the Williams’ from Reno, NV., putting on the most exciting race which ended with son Brett eeking out a victory by the slightest margin over his dad Craig. The Nor Cal 400 class race featured three drivers competing: Leo Qui, A UC Davis student, plus Robert Solis and his wife Mindy. Robert edged her out at the last minute and took home the first place victory. We are not sure Mindy let Robert in the house that night upon returning home.
Mike Breslin brought out four Mini GT boats for the first time in many a year here in Region 11. He is anxious to build the class to National Status numbers and says he has the boats to do so. Keep up the good work, Mikey. On the weekend of July 12th and 13th, the Budweiser Shootout, Tammy Dawe and Dan Schwartz Memorial Race took place at Salt Spring. Once again the Wilde Bunch led the way in performing the duties of the “worker bees.” Stuart Ford and Karl Bishop, as members of the A-Team, performed admirably in support of the race.
It was here that a new member was added to the A-Team. That was Julian Rucki who “did it all” during the entire weekend. Another member of the A- Team, Rex “Rocket” Bothell went a step further by taking and passing the Risk Manager Test. We welcome him to the ranks. Brian Schmeltz moved from A-Team status to OPC inspector upon successful completion of the necessary paper work. Along these lines, Buzz, “The Kid”, Rasmussen will be joining the ranks of inspectors in the Region. Couldn’t ask for a netter candidate for the job.
Vicki Schwarzenbach, up from Apple Valley worked her first “solo” performance as Chief Scorer and did a very nice job. She was assisted by O’Hara Schmeltz and Vicky Wilde. US Air Force Sergeant Kody Fields
worked the flags when he wasn’t running one of the Nor Cal 400 boats to a victory in the class. Spencer Love and Richard Warren came up from the Southland to run with our 45 guys. Spencer developed gremlins and Richard garnered a podium finish in a field that included the West Brothers, Warren and RJ.
Our Cracker guys (and gals) went south to Long Beach for the Summer Nationals and really did themselves proud with strong podium finishes. The Canfield/ Cox entry, Pandora’s Box, piloted by the Concord Flash, Tony Lombardo, with Blake Stump in the rider’s seat emerged the victors. In Third place was the P-28, owned by Julian Rucki and driven by Richard Rucki with Brian Schmeltz riding in the left seat. Way to go guys. Mossdale Quarry Lake is anything but what you might think judging from the name. It’s strategically located, has great water and manicured grounds for selfcontained camping beside two major highways in the California Central Valley. It was explored initially by Steve Wilde the Regatta Chairman for the East Bay Boat Club who first set foot on it as a potential boat racing site. Steve was able to negotiate a race date with the owner and the “new” venue was penciled in for an EBBC race on Sept., 27th and 28th. Racers from Oregon, Southern California and Arizona converged o Mossdale and had a lot of fun on a really nice race course.

Chris Madewell, recently married to Rachel Biagi, daughter of David and Cathi Biagi, put up podium finishes in CSH and 20SSH for the weekend. This was David Hale’s debut in a 45 boat (belonging to Frank Banducci) and did quite a job in competition with the West Brothers and Gilbert Solis. The weekend of October 6th was

scheduled for the North American Championship for Crackers and the National Championship for Sport C. in Antioch, Calif. Saturday turned out to be a “blow- out,” but Sunday was a beautiful day once the river was cleared of floating water hyacinth. The water turned out to be all that we had hoped for; the wind was to the liking of all boat racers; and the spectators were amped up for a really good show. The call went out to get the boats off the launch ramp and into the water. The roar of engines starting up got everyone’s attention, the three-minute horn was sounded and Delta Thunder V had finally begun.
The race was dedicated to the former City Councilman recently deceased Gary Agopian who was instrumental in having DBRA do a race at the new marina in Antioch. The 45 contingent saw Spencer Love emerge victorious. Warren West tallied the 2nd place finish and it was Chris Carrigan all the way from Michigan getting the overall third position.
The Sport C contingent had problems getting and keeping boats on the water, but nothing stopped Steve Walde of Discovery Bay from delivering first place honors, He was chased around the

The 2014 racing season started at Thanksgiving at the Annual SCSC Race in Parker, Ariz. This race has seen many formats over the years, at one time it was Kilos, and then it was Kilos with racing after the Kilos, then it was three days of racing, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Now it is just two days of great racing on Friday and Saturday. This was done because it is almost impossible to get to the LA area on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. It was a great race and was the 60-plus time it was held. This will also be the first race for the new racing season with

course lap after lap by Ricky Ciandro, of Lakeport, who was driving Frank Banducci’s Patriot.
Thanks to Frank Lozano and Betty Smith plus all the members of Antioch’s Rivertown Jamboree Committee for being such gracious hosts. Based on the enthusiastic reception from the crowd, the Committee has already invited us back for a return match next year.

In the words of our Region 11 Chairman Bill Boyes “… Antioch could become huge.” The final race of the season was at Lake Minden and put on by NCOA where the winds failed to cooperate on Sunday, sending the troops home one day early. Race Director Julian stepped out of his motorhome early Sunday morning and made the decision to call the race for the day because of the valley winds. Saturday saw some great racing. About 20 heats of racing took place before sundown. The day was incident free and a good time was had by all. The Saturday night pot luck coordinated by the
all of the categories raced in Region 12 in attendance. In March SCOA was going to hold a two day race at Puddingstone and everything was in place for a great weekend. A drivers school was held thanks mainly to David Hale. On the first race(COR) something went terribly wrong as one of the boats turned right in front of another while on the three minute gun and the drivers collided. We sat there for a few hours while the county coroner went over the accident and then LA County informed the officials that there would be no more racing. The county did not refund any of the deposit and it was quite a blow to SCOA. Scott Schatz is to be

A highlight of the day was the debut of Justin Noack in his first Sport C race driving the Inland Marine sponsored boat on loan from Frank Banducci. Noack got himself a 4th place overall. Way to go Justin.
Speaking of Sport C, it was nice to see Russell Mead, down from the great Norhwest. He got a chance to race with Steve Walde, Bobby Joe Finkbohnner, Frank Banducci and Justin Noack. Incidentally, this was Banducci’s first race in a little over a year following a few issues with his heart. Of course, he got to follow Walde and Finkbohnner around the course all day long. Finally, the last action of Region 11 was the election of officers as follows: Steve Wilde, Stock Outboard Commissioner; Julian Rucki, Inboard Commissioner; and RJ West, OPC Commissioner.
As we go into the off-season and prepare for 2015 equipment has been gathered and stored in anticipation of repairs, tune-ups and general maintenance. Only problem was that when the drivers woke up Sunday morning the wind was blowing and the races were called. Not a very good start to the season. The next race was the first weekend in August at Long Beach. This was the Nationals for the Inboard flatbottoms and the Inboard Endurance classes. Again it was a great weekend. The Stocks were not raced at this race due to space constraints. We next went to Bayfair in San Diego. The non-Unlimited classes were moved from Ski Beach to Crown Point. The race

was a success but the drivers were not as happy with the site compared to Ski Beach. The final race of the year was the Parker Enduro held October 25th and 26th. This is a marathon event held over two days and also stocks for circle racing for two days. Results of the race are: 1st Division 7 and first overall were Randy Davis, Billy Dunsmore, and Gordon Jennings. Division 1 winners were Sean Lambert and Robert Middleton. Division 2 was won bh Mike Quindazzi and Chad Hill. Division 3 was Paul Fitzgerald, Charles Sousamia, and Tyler Roth. Division 4 was won by Steve Davis,
Todd Haig, and Freddie Brennan,while Divison 5 was won by John Haddon, and Randy Person finally division 6 went to Bob Teague and John Teague and Randy Davis. respective classes. This was the second consecutive year that this event was held in Kingston. The local hospitality and support was again outstanding with large crowds in attendance for each day of racing action. A special thank you is extended to Rick Ross and the Parks Department for all their considerable efforts that resulted in another successful event.
This racing season, Region 14 hosted three races, the LaGrange Powerboat Classic, the 2014 Knoxville Powerboat Classic and most notably, the 2014 APBA PRO Nationals. Georgia Powerboat Racing Association hosted the 2014 PRO Nationals in Kingston, Tenn., July 1 through July 4th. Over 80 boats battled for National Championship in their

SPORT (the Schubert Family and their Sport Marine in Richmond, Texas.) hosted four races this season; two local races at the Baytown Boat Club in April and October, and two National races at Port Neches in May and Orange in September. These races have been run regularly by SPORT (Southern Professional Outboard Racing Tour) for several years now. Without SPORT and the Schuberts there’d be no racing in Texas. New this Sept. 19th through 21st, in Orange was the running of the SST-45 National Championships. The weather couldn’t have been better for the 17 boat

field on the short course. The spread in qualifying times for the first 12 boats was about 1.5 sec., and was not much greater for most of the 17. For the first time in several years, the old masters R.J. West and Mark Schmerbauch did not lap the field in the final heat. In fact, Chris Hughes chased Mark around the course to place a very strong second in the finale. Our son Hans, fresh from an engineering internship at BRP-Powertrain /Rotax in Austria, ran a strong second in the third heat, but “bought” two buoys in other heats and had an aftermarket charge coil wire short to ground during the second turn of the final heat. Many drivers had problems, including Jose Mendana Sr, who drove Chris Hughes’ old Pugh rig and did
commissioner, Gordon Jennings and Scott Schatz are the Inboard commissioners and Dean Wilson will represent us in OPC. We thank all previous commissioners for all of their work and hope they continue to support their categories. We had a lot of our members attend many out of region races, David Hale, Gordon Jennings, Steven Dawe and the Wright brothers. Mike Schubert finally had the wonderfulsounding Johnson V-6 screaming at full power on his red Gran Prix for one Sport F1 race at Port Neches in May. He blasted off the start dock in the finale, Chris Fairchild and his Optimax played catch-up at the end of each stretch, but the Optimax’s top end superiority was too little and too late. Mike and the Johnson’s acceleration won the day. After several seasons of very bad luck, Tracy Hawkins and ‘Big Steve’ Coleman finally got their ducks lined up. Tracy placed at Port Neches and won later at Highlands. Mike’s Johnson was healthy only for Port Neches, sad to say. Chris Santierre and Haley Gibbs suffered a bad crash at that

In Memorium Rich Willim 1949-2014
So, who was Rich Willim? Husband, father, grand dad, Ford Flathead expert, driver, mechanic, author and racing advisor. Rich was all of these but much, much more. For more than four decades, his father Charles, then Rich, campaigned a Ford Flathead powered hydroplane on the APBA Inboard Circuit; primarily in Region 6 where there was a Speedliner, Hallet and finally two classic Lauterbachs. After Rich hung up the helmet, a motorcycle racer named “Glen Turner,” was trained to become a champion driver with outdated equipment. Glen was one of the most gifted, tenacious and classiest racers of all time. When I received the call to replace “Glen,” I was honored and thrilled, but it was impossible to replace Glen. I promised to do my best. A 1953 Lauterbach, ’37 Ford Flathead, at age 26, I was the youngest component of the equation. Rich gave me a crash course on starting and racing in his drive way and waved goodbye as he went to work at Ford’s Woodhaven Stamping. Amazingly we captured the 2.5 Litre Modified class at St. Joe/ Benton Harbor. To my knowledge, this was the “last” Ford Flathead powered vehicle to win in competition. This remains as one of my most cherished memories. Rich continued to mentor and advise many mechanics and drivers. He built engines for “Vintage” race boats, such as Bob Moore’s “Hi Q” and Phil Kuntz’s “Helter Skelter” and APBA’s Driving School boat (which ran 700 laps without overhaul). We lost Rich last summer, but his ever lasting legacy lives on through sons Ronnie and Marty (pictured here with a nearly life-size Phil Kuntz banner of Rich’s Sanfu V). Ronnie operates Blue Collar performance which is one of the Midwest’s premier engine tuners. Along with brother Marty, the boys continue to support APBA with their expertise. race. Haley was personally unscathed physically, but Chris suffered some minor injuries. Haley’s boat was destroyed, but her dad Mike found another Hoffman for her quickly and had it running at Orange. At Port Neches 2013 Hans drove up Travis Thompson’s roostertail and then landed on Chris Hughes’ boat. Chris’s boat was damaged but not destroyed. Mike Schubert, luckily, was able to repair our Gran Prix but it now weighs in at 735 lbs. The entire SeaWay Marine team and trailer were at both Port Neches and Orange. Hayden Jacobsen gave a very good account of himself at Port Neches, but Tim Seebold had motor problems there.
Tri Hulls, the biggest crowd-pleaser in SPORT, also saw something new this year. John Ottinger graduated from J Hydro and showed up with twin Evinrude 75s on a Tri Hull. Jeremiah Mayo has just graduated from J Hydro, and is apparently entering SST45. He drove the Darrell Beaulier (Megan Becan) Hoffman at Highlands this October but had motor problems. New in J Hydro is Mike Schubert’s daughter Natalie. John Schubert’s son Grant has been driving for several years. Both are keeping up the family tradition by performing well.
The two Highlands (Baytown Boat Club) races are season’s beginning and season’s end testing sessions for our local boats, so we’re very grateful for those races even if there is no prize money. With Glyn Mathews standing in for Hans in our Gran Prix in October, we broke a reed in the first heat. Better now than at Port Neches 2015. We’re grateful to Travis Thompson for piloting our Gran Prix at Highlands in April, where he barely lost first place to Chris Hughes, who snuck inside a turn while Travis was cruising around the course problemfree.
