I am pleased to write the first President’s letter for 2025!
Before we embrace the approaching Spring and Summer, I wanted to update you on certain Club activities over the winter.
The Lower Campus is now a year-round hub, serving members who want to enjoy a meal at the Pool House, hungry families dining after skating on the incredible rink, and dedicated golfers after practicing at our simulator facility. Overall, we are thrilled with the activity down at the Lower Campus during the winter. If you haven’t tried the Pool House Smash Burger yet, you’re missing a real treat.
In February, the Board of Governors held its annual off-site meeting at the Shenorock Shore Club to analyze and reflect on the important issues facing the Club over the near and long term. I want to highlight three objectives that came out of those discussions:
Develop a Comprehensive Asset Database and Investment Plan. The club business is capital-intensive, and with the growth and age of our plant, we need a precise understanding of our most critical capital expenditures. Last year, we reintroduced depreciation into our accounting principles, and Brian Baldwin’s team created a detailed database of the Club’s asset base. These changes provide us with greater clarity about what needs to be done as well as the associated expenses. A focus of this effort will be to understand the implications of continuing to maintain our wonderful, but aged, clubhouse versus a more comprehensive solution.
Build a Process to Understand the Inventory of Contiguous Properties. In some ways, the Club is in the real estate business. We own 123 acres of land, over 150,000 square feet of buildings, and significant support assets, including parking lots and utilities. As you have heard, the Board of Governors has developed a process to evaluate the risks and value of contiguous properties for the long-term benefit and protection of the Club.
Target a Steady State Operating Model. The Club is in a very different place than it was even five years ago. With the completion of the Lower and Upper Campus projects and the increase in demand for the Club’s facilities, we need to
ensure that we target a break-even operating model. The Club’s management, Board of Governors, and committees are committed to making this happen.
As we turn towards Summer, I would like to highlight two projects. If you were on the golf course in late March, you may have noticed the work designed to expand our tee footprint. Holes 7, 11, 12, 14, and 16—which previously were challenged in their ability to withstand our increased volume of rounds and the use of irons on the tee—have had their tee footprints increased on average by 20%. This footprint expansion is a critical investment that will ensure the Apawamis golf course will continue to offer best-in-class conditions throughout the season. Another notable accomplishment is the completion of our tennis court refurbishment. We look forward to improved irrigation and better surfaces.
On a final note, I wanted to reflect on the recent affirmative vote regarding the acquisition of Six Club Road.
While living in Hong Kong, I joined a wonderfully British golf club named ‘Shek-O’. As you would expect, the club had a fancy Latin motto: “Medio Tutissimus Ibis.” I always found this motto to be very instructive. Quite simply, the phrase means “In the middle, you will go most safely.” As a golfer, there is no better strategy. In the case of Six Club Road, I believe the Board of Governors and my fellow Presidents who supported the acquisition followed this advice. This acquisition struck a middle ground and was undertaken for a simple and prudent reason: to protect our wonderful golf course and our Club. The decision to acquire the property was not an easy one and I want to acknowledge the financial commitment required of the membership. I also understand and appreciate the views of those members who disagreed with this proposal. I hope that in time this middle decision is viewed as the right one in spite of the financial burden it created. On a lighter note, I believe that the motto remains instructive, for as much as we try, many of our players—including me—don’t always follow the advice of being in the middle of the fairway!

Tastes like Summer: This Season’s Featured Drinks
By: John ‘Bones’ Schultz Jr.
With the arrival of warmer weather and another exciting season at the Club, we’re proud to have a beverage program designed to celebrate the best of summer — fresh flavors, creative cocktails, and local partnerships. I wanted to share a few highlights we can’t wait for you to try.
Returning this season is our signature Spring Spritz — a member-favorite and a true sign that patio season has arrived. Made with butterfly pea flower-infused Aviation Gin, fresh lemon, and a splash of club soda, this vibrant cocktail is light, botanical, and as refreshing as it is eye-catching.
Joining the menu this year is the Strawberry Basil Smash, crafted with muddled strawberries, fresh basil, lemon, and your choice of gin or vodka. It’s bright, herbaceous, and built for sunny afternoons on the patio.
New to our lineup is The Green Jacket — a crisp and tropical tequila cocktail featuring blended cucumber, pineapple juice, fresh lime, and a splash of club soda. It’s easy-drinking, hydrating, and the perfect pairing for summer days at the Club.
We’re also thrilled to announce two Club Exclusive beers, joining us this season. From Captain Lawrence Brewing, Eleanor’s Teeth IPA — a bold, hoppy nod to one of the Club’s most memorable golf holes. And from Kidd Squid Brewery,
The Gallery Lager — light, crisp, and designed for post-round relaxation or a casual drink on the terrace.
In addition, we’re expanding our sake offerings to complement our fantastic sushi program. We’re featuring Junmai Daiginjo Sake ‘Kita Nishiki’ Banshu Ikkon — refined, elegant, and beautifully balanced — alongside Ginjo Sparkling Sake ‘Schwa’ Bijofu, a bright, bubbly option that’s perfect for pairing or celebrating.
Rounding out the beverage program are a variety of house-made mocktails and non-alcoholic beers, ensuring there’s something refreshing for everyone — whether you’re toasting a great round or simply enjoying the view.
We look forward to sharing these new flavors and seasonal favorites with you throughout the spring and summer. Here’s to good golf, great food, and memorable drinks all season long at the Club.

New Golf Season Essentials
by Lauren Winkler
For Men
As course attire modernizes, elevated hoodies have become common on and off the course at the Apawamis. Although there is debate whether hoodies are appropriate attire, this Peter Millar Grid Performance Half-Zip Hoodie is absolutely golf attire and by far my favorite. The zipper on the front gives it an elevated feel without being a traditional quarter zip, and the grid design is very lightweight and comfortable. It is available in the golf shop in three colors: Sailor Blue (pictured), Navy, and White.
For Women
Daily Sports is a Swedish athletic brand that has created terrific golf and outerwear. Similar to KJUS, the quality & durability of Daily Sports products is clear. The Lyric pant is a great women’s golf pant that can easily be worn for travel or work. The silhouette is flattering on all body shapes and the lightweight fabric makes it a stylish and functional pant for year-round golf gear. Available in various colors, this should be a staple piece for your golf wardrobe.
