Dear Brothers, I am pleased to see that you made it to Vegas!

On behalf of the entire fraternity leadership team, including the Board of Directors, the General Office Staff, our Western Region team, and the local host chapters, I welcome you to our 90th General Convention.

While the strip and all the lights in Las Vegas have a way of luring even the most studious businessman away from his work, we are reminded that we have much work to do here—as we handle yet again the “business of Alpha.”

I look forward to providing you an international update on the state of our fraternity. We also will hear from our various general and regional officers and key committees.

I hope you brought a laptop, or other mobile device to read documents. As part of our ongoing “Alpha Goes Green Initiative” most of our reports will be disseminated electronically, to save money, save paper, and ultimately improve and make more green, our environment.

The senior brothers’ lounge (which was a hit in New Orleans) will be open all week long. This space provides special amenities to our senior brothers. But it is also a setting at which our young brothers can pull up a chair and talk with a brother about the realͲliving history of A Phi A. I encourage college brothers to stop by, and take in all you can from these brothers of great wisdom and experience!

We have some very exciting and powerful speakers, workshops and programs this year all designed to help you become a better Alpha, so you can go back home and make our world a better place, one Alpha at a time, one locale at a time.

Enjoy the relaxed dress code this year: business casual with the exception of the Black & Gold Awards Luncheon, which is business suit dress.

My dear brothers: On behalf of the corporate office staff, convention planning committeeͲͲalong with local host brothersͲͲI welcome you to Las Vegas, Nevada and the 104th Anniversary | 90th General Convention of our fraternity! We have been working tediously to assure that your convention experience is a good one. I am also excited that you have chosen to participate in the transiational history of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., as we prepare to rebuild the foundation on how we “develop our leaders.”

“Developing our leaders” might mean something different to every brother. For some it means working with our partners, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters; for others it means being a good parent and example to their neighborhood. But I also hope brothers think of this idea as a way to connect with younger brothers in this organization. Reaching out to them will surely be as important as any of the initiatives and partnerships we have in place today.

Therefore, I humbly ask every alumni brother to take the time and speak with our college brothers. Take the time to visit the vendor’s area and buy them a tie.

Walk with them as you visit our partners and discuss the future potential local partnerships and career opportunities. Though we conduct serious business at our conventions, we cannot forget that this is a Brotherhood.

Brothers, I truly hope you enjoy your visit to Las Vegas, as we plan to have a successful convention.

As the Western Region Vice President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., I would like to take this opportunity to welcome each of you, our partners, guests, and friends to the Western Region of our great organization as we commence for our 104th Anniversary | 90th General Convention here in the great city Las Vegas, Nevada.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to one of the most exciting regions. You will find that the great valley of Las Vegas, Nevada is a fitting location to convene our general body. Las Vegas has much to offer as we swiftly required another venue to host our General Convention due to our recent departure from Phoenix, Arizona.

Because Las Vegas is known for twenty-four hours of non-stop entertainment, fun and outstanding shows, the fraternity was able to modify and construct a business agenda that maintained our focus on the development of African American boys and the many topics requiring our attention as we conduct our fraternal business, without having to be overly challenged with planning fun and excitement – as it is embedded within Las Vegas. The local host chapter, Theta Pi Lambda, is excited to welcome you to its home city and continues to work diligently with the national team so that your stay is an enjoyable one.

Alpha continues to uphold its ideals, principles and values, separating our brotherhood and organization from others. As we prepare to experience an exciting agenda at this convention, let us be reminded that we stand on a solid foundation of over a “century of service” with exemplary and outstanding men achieving the impossible. To that end, let us continue what we have been called to do as we build upon our foundation as we prepare to convene this summer.

As the Western Region Assistant Vice President I would like to extend a warm welcome to all brothers, family, friends, and corporate partners present to the 104th Anniversary | 90th General Convention here in Las Vegas, Nevada. I pray that you all have an amazing time while you are visiting in this great region. As a young brother who has seen the ins and outs of this great city I am sure that you will not have a dull moment to say the least. This is a place filled with surprises and great humor. Above all I am eager to tackle the work that will be done here this weekend as a brotherhood.

FRATERNITY MISSION STATEMENT

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.

FRATERNITY VISION STATEMENT

The objectives of this Fraternity shall be: to stimulate the ambition of its members; to prepare them for the greatest usefulness in the causes of humanity, freedom, and dignity of the individual; to encourage the highest and noblest form of manhood; and to aid down-trodden humanity in its efforts to achieve higher social, economic and intellectual status.

ALPHA PHI ALPHA: A BRIEF HISTORY

Since its founding on December 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African-Americans and people of color around the world.

Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The visionary founders, known as the “Jewels” of the Fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy.

The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority stu-

dents who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the Fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha's principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.

Alpha Phi Alpha chapters were established at other colleges and universities, many of them historically black institutions, soon after the founding at Cornell. The first Alumni Chapter was established in 1911. While continuing to stress academic excellence among its members, Alpha also recognized the need to help correct the educational, economic, political, and social injustices faced by African-Americans.

Alpha Phi Alpha has long stood at the forefront of the African-American community's fight for civil rights through leaders such as: W.E.B. DuBois, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Edward Brooke, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Andrew Young, William Gray, Paul Robeson, and many others. True to its form as the “first of firsts,” Alpha Phi Alpha has been interracial since 1945.

ALPHA PHI ALPHA: TODAY

Alpha Phi Alpha today continues its commitment to members of the Fraternity and the African-American community through Alpha University. It is through the groundbreaking Alpha University training program, the Fraternity has rededicated itself to fostering a spirit of Brotherhood within the ranks of the Fraternity, preparing a new generation of leaders and bringing

consistency to chapter operation and to the implementation of the Fraternity's national programs.

NATIONAL PROGRAMS

The fraternity’s national programs are community outreach mentoring initiatives that have been adopted by the organization’s governing body and mandated for implementation by all of its chapters. The organization’s national programs include:

Go–To–High School, Go–To–College

The “Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College” program, established in 1920, concentrates on the importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to advancement. Statistics prove the value of this extra impetus in making the difference in the success of young African-American men, given that school completion is the single best predictor of future economic success. Through the Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College educational initiative, young men receive information and learn strategies that facilitate success.

Alpha men provide youth participants with excellent role models to emulate.

Project Alpha

Project Alpha is a collaborative effort between the March of Dimes Foundation and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This program was developed to increase the knowledge of the AfricanAmerican male of the consequences of teenage pregnancy from the male perspective. This program seeks to assist young men in developing an understanding of their role in preventing untimely pregnancies through responsible attitudes and behaviors.

The goals of Project Alpha are to: reduce the rate of adolescent sex and

pregnancy; stress the concept of abstinence as a personal choice while promoting the use of contraceptives to those that choose to be sexually active; increase the knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the human body and the awareness of sexually transmitted diseases; clarify and emphasize the roles and responsibilities of fatherhood; and reduce the rate of sexual abuse and violence among African-American teens.

A Voteless People Is A Hopeless People

“A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” was initiated as a national program of Alpha during the 1930's when many African-Americans had the right to vote but were prevented from voting because of poll taxes, threats of reprisal, and lack of education about the voting process. Voter education and registration has remained a dominant focus of this outreach activity for over 65 years. In the 1990s, the focus has shifted to include political awareness and empowerment.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

Alpha Phi Alpha’s special projects are programs and activities that are sustained through collaborative efforts, memoranda of understanding, and/or outside financial assistance, which Chapters are encouraged to implement. Current Special Projects include:

(1) Big Brothers / Big Sisters mentoring partnership—implemented in

1991, Alpha Phi Alpha and BB/BS assist each other in mentoring African-American boys and young men.

(2) Boy Scouts of America—through this alliance, Alpha Phi Alpha fo-

cuses on mentoring through the Scouting program.

(3) Leadership Development Institutes —the program prepares outstanding high school students in the vital skills of leadership, college preperation and effective group interaction.

College Life to Corporate Life Initiative (C2C)

In concert with the mission of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the College Life to Corporate Life Initiative (C2C) was created to develop the human resources of Alpha Phi Alpha and cultivate mutually beneficial relationships with corporate partners resulting in rewarding career opportunities for the members of Alpha Phi Alpha and increased critical mass of diverse talent for its corporate partners.

The Alpha Phi Alpha Education Foundation, Inc.

The Alpha Phi Alpha Education Foundation, Inc. is the non-profit charitable arm of the Fraternity, which focuses on scholarship, programs, and training and development of the membership.

Education Foundation encompasses the implementation of Go-to-High School, Go-to-College, Project Alpha, Voter Education / Registration efforts, The Belford V. Lawson Oratorical Contest, the Collegiate Scholars Bowl, Leadership Development Institutes, and the professional and personal development thrusts of the Fraternity-Alpha University.

The Alpha Phi Alpha Building Foundation, Inc.

The Alpha Phi Alpha Building Foundation was established as an "economic development corporation to promote, preserve, and protect the infrastructure of our community. The Foundation has developed a unique approach to affect positive change." The Alpha Village represents a project built and purchased by Alpha men and a forward step towards an economic development movement.

The Alpha Phi Alpha Economic Development Foundation, Inc.

The purpose of the Alpha Phi Alpha National Community Economic Development Foundation is to “promote and encourage economic development in minority and disadvantaged communities by expanding the opportunities for the residents of those communities to enter into, own, manage, operate and/or be employed in business enterprises which are based upon the substantial participation of the low income community.” Additionally, the Foundation’s aim is to promote a dynamic business environment in underserved communities through franchise opportunities, family financial planning and an aggressive Wealth Building Initiative.

Washington, D.C. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc.

Established to oversee the development of the memorial project, the Washington, D.C. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc is a non - profit fundraising arm of the fraternity. The foundation’s mission is “to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by leading a collaborative funding, design and con-

struction process in the creation of a memorial to honor his national and international contributions to world peace through non- violent social change.”

World Policy Council

The Fraternity formed its much heralded World Policy Council in 1996 to address United States national and foreign policy issues. At its inception, Former U.S. Senator Bro. Edward W. Brooke of Massachusetts, the first African-American to serve in the Senate in the 20th century, was named chairman of the council. Senator Brooke succeeded by Bro. Dr. Horace G. Dawson, Jr., director of Howard University’s Patricia Roberts Harris Public Affairs Program and former Ambassador to Botswana.

The Council’s formation reflects two realities in America: 1.) The U.S. government’s national agenda has become more closely linked to world affairs and non-governmental organizations are part of the network of influential voices in foreign affairs. 2) Alpha Phi Alpha’s legacy of activities in civil rights and education has broadened to include foreign policy. The Fraternity’s leadership has been careful to stress that Alpha Phi Alpha’s new foreign policy interest will not diminish the organization’s involvement with domestic issues.

In 1952, the General Convention established The Alpha Award of Honor and The Alpha Award of Merit. These have become by tradition and practice our greatest awards. The awardees were initially chosen by a committee headed by the venerable brother Taliaferro (Tolly) Harris. At some point in our history the selection became a function of the office of the General President. In recent years The Award of Honor has been presented to non-members and The Award of Merit to members.

GENERAL CONVENTION GUIDELINES

General Officers

Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. We are pleased to submit the report of the Committee on Rules and Credentials outlining the procedures governing the conduct of this 90th General Convention of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., to wit: 1. The printed program presented by the General Organization shall be the Official Program of the Convention once adopted by the delegates.

2. A brother registering for the Convention must present a current Pass Card, Life Membership Plate or Special Pass Card signed by the appropriate convention officer.

3. Delegates shall present their credentials to the Committee on Rules and Credentials to be certified. The credentials required are the Convention Badge, Current Pass Card, Life Membership Plate, or Special Pass Card.

4. All chapter financial obligations to the General Office must be paid, and the completion of a Chapter Directory must be verified prior to certification of any of the Chapters’ Delegates.

5. Delegates shall be seated in the section of the assembly hall “designated for delegates” by the Chief Sergeant-at-arms and shall be identified by a Convention Badge bearing their name and the “DELEGATE over-print certification stamp” applied by the Committee on Rules and Credentials.

6. There shall be an easily identifiable space between the seating areas for delegates and other brothers in general attendance.

7. Other brothers shall be seated in other specified sections of the assembly hall.

8. All registered brothers shall have the same rights and privileges of Delegates, except the right to vote on agenda items and in the election.

9. At the opening of each business session, the Committee on Rules and Credentials shall give a status report to the assembly on all Certified Delegates at the convention.

10. A record of eligible voters certified by the Rules and Credentials Committee shall constitute the Official Voting strength of the Convention.

11. In a scheduled assembly, the necessity of “a quorum” shall apply to the sessions’ conduct of business and organic legislation.

12. One-fourth of the registered delegates shall constitute “a quorum”, as provided in the Constitution and By-laws of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. [Article II-Section 6)].

13. Past General Presidents, General Officers and Committee Chairmen who are not seated on the dais shall be seated on the first and/or second rows of the section designated for delegates.

14. The Parliamentarian shall be seated on the dais next to the presiding officer, who will normally be seated to the right of the podium.

15. There shall be at least two (2) Sergeants-at-arms at the entrance to the assembly hall to facilitate admission and to maintain order.

16. Entrance and exit to the assembly shall be through the main door(s) designated by the Sergeant at Arms.

17. No brother may be admitted to a Convention Business Session without the Convention Badge.

18. There shall be no verbal reports of General Officers or Committee/Commission Chairmen—except The General President, Budget and Finance Committee, and essential “working committees” of the General Convention, who may provide preliminary updates on their areas.

25. The General President shall be an “Ex-Officio” member of all committees.

26. Roberts Rules of Order (newly revised) shall govern the Convention, except that in the matter of debate each speaker shall be limited to not more than two (2) minutes. Additional time may be granted at the discretion of the General President or Presiding Officer.

27. Smoking is not permitted in the General Business Sessions.

AWARDS OF MERIT

JIBREEL KHAZAN (Formerly Ezell Blair Jr.)Jibreel Khazan is one of the original four who took part in the Woolworth sit-ins.

Born Ezell Blair Jr., in Greensboro NC, he graduated from Dudley High School and received a B.S. in sociology from North Carolina A&T State University in 1963. While a student at A&T, Khazan was president of the junior class, the student government association, the campus NAACP and the Greensboro Congress for Racial Equality. He attended law school at Howard University for almost a year. After finding it nearly impossible to find a job in Greensboro because of his reputation as being one of those four troublemakers, he moved to New Bedford, MA in 1965. In 1968, he became a member of the New England Islamic Center and took on his present name.

Khazan works with developmentally disabled people for the CETA program in New Bedford, Mass. He also has worked with the AFL/CIO Trade Council in Boston and the Opportunities Industrialization Center and at the Rodman Job Corps Center.

He is married to the former Lorraine France George of New Bedford. They have three children, one of whom graduated from North Carolina A&T.

WENDELL T. FOSTER, JR. Wendell T. Foster, Jr. holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Union University and Master of Arts degree from San Jose State University. As a participant in the Civil Rights movement, he joined other Virginia Union University collegians, in the marches, pickets, and sit-ins in Richmond, Virginia to desegregate local lunch counters. Although the protests were always conducted in a non-violent manner, Wendell, along with 33 other students, was among the first college students in the nation to be arrested. Prince Edward County, Virginia was the only locality in the United States to close all of its public schools rather than to integrate them. Wendell spent his first summer after completing college teaching mathematics to some of the Prince Edward County Negro students who had not attended school during the prior academic year.

Foster is active with Beta Gamma Lambda Chapter where he has been the recipient of the chapter’s Man of the Year Award in 1992, 2007, and 2009. While attending graduate school in 1969, he reactivated Epsilon Mu Chapter at San Jose State University and Alpha Epsilon Chapter at the University of California – Berkeley. He started three chapters in Virginia, Theta Rho at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1973,

Kappa Pi Chapter at the College of William and Mary in 1975, and Upsilon Gamma Chapter at the University of Richmond in 2009.

He is active in the Fifth Street Baptist Church where he has taught Sunday school for more than 30 years. He is also a board member of the Jennie Shaw Community Development Foundation. He continues to teach mathematics at J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond, VA.

JESSE OWENS AWARD OF EXCELLENCE: AN ALPHA SALUTE TO ATHLETES

CHARLES LEWIS HALEY Charles Lewis Haley, born January 6, 1964 in Lynchburg, Virginia, is a former American football linebacker and defensive end in the National Football League who played for the San Francisco 49ers (1986–1991, 1998–1999) and the Dallas Cowboys (1992–1996). He was drafted in the fourth round of the 1986 NFL Draft out of James Madison University.

Haley has the distinction of being the only player in NFL history to have been on five Super Bowl-winning teams.

Although injuries would eventually force his retirement in 1996, Haley briefly resurfaced for the 1998 playoffs to aid the 49ers, and played for them in 1999. Haley then turned to assistant coaching, and became a defensive assistant for the Detroit Lions.

In his 12 NFL seasons, Haley recorded 100.5 quarterback sacks, two interceptions (nine return yards), and eight fumble recoveries, which he returned for nine yards and a touchdown. He was also selected to play in five Pro Bowls (1988, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1995) and was named NFL All-Pro in 1990 and 1994. Haley was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

DHANI JONES Warrior and Bowtie Expert. Linebacker and Poet. Jock and Treehugger: Dhani Jones understands the extremes of life. An NFL player with the Cincinnati Bengals, Jones rides a bike to the stadium for practices & games, works with Al Gore’s climate change initiative and is on Feeding America’s entertainment council to end hunger. His most recent accomplishment is the launch of Bow Ties for a Cause, a signature line to help create awareness and raise funds for non-profit organizations around the country. The line is custom made for each charity and designed by Dhani and the founding members of the organizations. The well-spoken Jones stars in the Travel Channel’s original series, DHANI TACKLES THE GLOBE, now in its second season.

By actively participating in some of the most beloved national pastimes from around the world, Dhani discovers that sports have the universal ability to open a window into a culture; define a destination; and unlock a common passion in people that is as different as it is familiar. His

huge love for living, authority on sport and understanding of the big issues of climate change make Dhani a key player in sport and sustainability. No wonder that in Hindi, “Dhani” means thinking man.

HENRY LAWRENCE Henry Lawrence, born June 29, 1951, in Danville, Pennsylvania, is a former professional American football player. A two-time Pro Bowler, he played in the National Football League for 13 seasons as an offensive tackle with the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders. He was a starter in Super Bowl XV and Super Bowl XVIII for the Raiders.

MIKE MERRIWEATHER Mike Merriweather is a retired American football linebacker who played for the National Football League (NFL) Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings during the 1980s and 1990s.

His first professional season was 1982 with the Steelers. He was elected to the Pro Bowl in three consecutive seasons: 1984, 1985, and 1986, and in 1984 was 5th in the NFL with 15 sacks (Mark Gastineau led the league with 22).

Mike Merriweather spent 12 years in an NFL uniform playing linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings,

New York Jets and Green Bay Packers.

But it was with the Steelers where he had the most success. He was drafted by the Steelers out of the University of the Pacific in the third round (70th overall) of the 1982 NFL Draft and spent six seasons wearing black and gold. From 1982-1987, Merriweather was named to three consecutive Pro Bowls (1984-1986) and was named All-Pro three times (1984, 1985, 1987). In 1984, Merriweather set a then-Steelers’ record for sacks in a season with 15, which was fifth best in the NFL. He finished his Steelers’ career with 31 sacks, which is currently tied for 14th on the all-time Steelers’ sack list. Merriweather also had 11 interceptions and two defensive touchdowns while playing for the Steelers. He finished his career playing for the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers both in 1993 and 1994. For his career, he had 41 sacks, 18 interceptions and four defensive touchdowns. He currently works as an insurance broker in Sacramento, California.

ROOSEVELT “ROSEY” GRIER Roosevelt “Rosey” Grier, born July 14, 1932 in Cuthbert, Georgia, is an American actor, singer, Christian minister, and former professional American football player. He was a notable college football player for Pennsylvania State University who earned a retrospective place in the National Collegiate Athletic Association 100th anniversary list of 100 most influential student athletes. Grier was selected for the Pro Bowl in 1956 and 1960, and

was named All-Pro at the defensive tackle position in 1956 and 1958–1962.

As a professional player, Grier was a member of the original Fearsome Foursome of the Los Angeles Rams and played in the Pro Bowl twice. In 1997, he was inducted into the New Jersey Sports Hall of Fame.

After Grier’s professional sports career, he worked as a bodyguard for Robert Kennedy during the 1968 presidential campaign and was guarding the senator’s wife, Ethel Kennedy, during the Robert F. Kennedy assassination. Although unable to prevent that killing, Grier took control of the gun and subdued the shooter, Sirhan Sirhan. He hosted his own Los Angeles television show and made approximately 70 guest appearances on various shows during the 1960s and 1970s.

As a singer, Grier first released singles on the A label in 1960, and over the following twenty-five years he continued to record on various labels including Liberty, Ric, MGM and A&M. His recording of a tribute to Robert Kennedy, “People Make The World” (written by Bobby Womack) was his only chart single, peaking at #128 in 1968. He has authored several books, including Rosey Grier’s Needlepoint for Men in 1973. Grier became an ordained Christian minister in 1983 and travels as an inspirational speaker. He founded American Neighborhood Enterprises, a nonprofit organization that serves inner city youth.

Grier has also written a number of books, and now travels the United States as an inspirational speaker, and is cofounder of American Neighbor-

hood Enterprises, an organization that works to help disadvantaged city dwellers buy homes and receive vocational training. Grier was ordained a Christian minister in 1983, and the next year he founded his nonprofit resource center for inner-city teens, developing spiritual and educational programs for disadvantaged youths. He is also on the Milken Family Foundation board of trustees and serves as its program administrator of community affairs.

STANLEY MCKENZIE Stanley McKenzie, born October 6, 1944 in Miami, Florida, is a 6’5” retired American professional National Basketball Association player. McKenzie played college basketball at New York University. He was selected by the Baltimore Bullets in the 11th round of the 1966 NBA Draft.

WALTER JONES BELLAMY Walter Jones Bellamy, born July 24, 1939 in New Bern, North Carolina, is a retired American professional basketball player. Walt attended Indiana University and left with the most rebounds in a career with 1,088 in only 70 games, while averaging 15.5 a game.

Averaging 20.5 points a game and shooting 51.7 percent from the floor, Bellamy was named an All-American in both his junior and senior year.

Bellamy was the starting center on the gold medal-winning American basketball team at the 1960 Summer Olympics.

Bellamy was the NBA first overall draft pick in 1961 and had a stellar 14 year career there. Bellamy was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 1962 after having arguably one of the three greatest rookie seasons in NBA history (along with Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson). Bellamy also led the NBA in field goal percentage in his rookie season, and had a 23 point, 17 rebound performance in the 1962 NBA All-Star Game. Bellamy ended his NBA career with 20,941 points and 14,241 rebounds. Bellamy was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993.

WALT WESLEY Walt Wesley, a native of Ft. Myers, Florida, was a graduate of Dunbar High School class of 1962 and lettered in Football, Basketball, Baseball and Track & Field. Walt attended the University of Kansas and received numerous awards and accolades to include: Two-Time All Big 8 Scoring Champion; All-Big 8 Conference player (Unanimous Choice); Missouri Valley Player of the year (Unanimous Choice), led KU is scoring and rebounding (1964, 1965, 1966). Walt also graduated with a degree in Physical Education and a minor in speech communications.

Walt had a 10 year career in the NBA ultimately retiring with the Los Angeles

Lakers. After professional basketball, Walt served as a Division I basketball coach for 16 years between University of Kansas, Western Michigan University and the United States Military Academy at West Point. Walt is very active with civic, charitable and philanthropic events and organizations and often stresses the need for academics with athletics. He now resides in Ft. Myers, Florida and is currently the Executive Director for the Ft. Myers Police Athletic League. Walt is married (Denise) and they have three children (Clinton, Walter Jr. and Janee).

ERIC CORTEZ WRIGHT Eric Cortez Wright, born April 18, 1959 in St. Louis, Missouri, is a former American professional football player who was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2nd round of the 1981 NFL Draft. Before that, the 6’1”, 183 lbs. cornerback from the University of Missouri was an all-Big Eight defensive back in 1979 and ‘80. He played on three University of Missouri teams that appeared in bowl games, and was selected for Missouri’s all-century team in 1990. Wright shares the Missouri record for the most pass interceptions in a game (three vs. San Diego State in 1979).

Considered one of the best cover cornerbacks of his day, Wright played in ten NFL seasons, from 1981-1990, all for the 49ers including starting on four Super Bowl-winning teams. A two-time Pro Bowler, Wright’s peak performance year was during the 1983 season

when he intercepted 7 passes for 164 yards and 2 touchdowns. He intercepted passes in Super Bowl XVI and Super Bowl XIX. He is currently an alumni coordinator for the 49ers.

MICHAEL JACKSON Michael Dwayne Jackson, born April 12, 1969 in Tangipahoa, Louisiana, is a former American professional football player who was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the sixth round of the 1991 NFL Draft. A 6’4”, 195 lbs. wide receiver from The University of Southern Mississippi, Jackson played in eight NFL seasons from 1991-1998 for the Browns and the Baltimore Ravens. In 1996, Jackson was tied with San Diego Chargers wide receiver Tony Martin for most receiving touchdowns in the NFL with 14.

His career was eventually cut short and forced him to retire at the age of 29.

He currently serves as mayor of his hometown, Tangipahoa, Louisiana.

WESLEY CHANDLER Wesley Sandy “Wes” Chandler, born August 22, 1956, is a former American college and professional football player who was a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) for eleven seasons in the 1970s and 1980s. Chandler was born in New Smyrna Beach, Florida in 1956. He attended New Smyrna Beach High School and was a

standout high school football player for the New Smyrna Beach Barracudas. Chandler received an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where he played for the Florida Gators football team from 1974 to 1977. As a Gator, he caught ninety-two passes for 1,963 yards and a (then) school record twenty-two touchdowns in a run-oriented offense, adding six more scores on rushes and kick returns. Chandler was a first-team All-American in 1976 and 1977, and is widely considered to be one of the best football players to ever play at the University of Florida.

He has been named to several all-time school and all-Southeastern Conference teams, and he was also inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame as a “Gator Great” in 1989.

Chandler retired from the NFL during the 1988 season after an eleven-year playing career. During his NFL career, he caught 559 passes for 8,966 yards and fifty-six touchdowns, rushed for eighty-four yards, returned forty-eight kickoffs for 1,048 yards, and gained 428 yards on sixty-seven punt returns.

Overall, he amassed 10,526 all-purpose yards. At the time of his retirement, Chandler ranked twelfth in NFL history in receiving yards and thirteenth in receptions. He also earned four Pro Bowl selections, including three with the San Diego Chargers. In 2001, Chandler was inducted into the San Diego Charger Hall of Fame. Chandler eventually went to Dallas after seven years coaching in NFL Europe, including a stint as head coach of the Berlin Thunder in 1999. Before that, he also

coached at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida and Father Lopez Catholic High School in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Chandler has established a scholarship fund for minority students through the Wes Chandler Celebrity Golf Classic.

After retiring as a player, Chandler has become a football coach, and most recently he was the offensive coordinator for the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League (UFL).

CARL ELLER Retired players Association Founder and President Carl Eller, is now in a position to help former players from the National Football League gain access to much needed Medical Care and improved pension benefits. Since his days as Consultant for the National Football League, he has gained national attention as the leader in the field of providing care and treatment for the National Football league current and former players. Eller, a Great Sports Legend, All American at the University of Minnesota, and Rose Bowl Champions was a dominant force on the Minnesota Viking’s Defense of the sixties and seventies known as the Purple People Eaters.

DR. BILL RELEFORD Brother Dr. Bill Releford is a podiatric surgeon dedicated to reducing diabetes-related amputations. He authored “5 Colors a Day to Better Health” (Milligan Books; $19.95), as he knew there was no better place than a barbershop to help black men feel comfortable talking about their health. He also created the Diabetic Amputation Prevention Foundation in 2000 and founded the Releford Foot and Ankle Institute in 2007 in Inglewood, California.

Since the program’s inception, Releford has visited more than 375 barbershops and screened more than 12,000 men for diabetes and hypertension in 22 cities. With a $240,000 grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in September 2009 and a two-year $550,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health in November 2009, Releford is planning a barbershop tour to 50 cities using a network of more than 200 nonmedical volunteers and medically skilled doctors and nurses in cities such as Chicago; Atlanta; Washington, D.C.; and New York. Releford also partnered with the Prostate Cancer Foundation and will now add P.E.P Talks (Prostate Education Project) and prostate screenings to the barbershop visits. In 2008 and 2009, the barbershop program received a series of sponsorships totaling $600,000 from the Abbott Fund, the nonprofit arm of Abbott, the global

healthcare company. Releford also garnered funds from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, Novo Nordisk, and Pfizer Inc. In 2009, the program’s costs came to roughly $600,000. This year, Releford expects his budget to be $1.5 million.

Less than $5,000 of his budget comes from individual private donations.

LEYDE ST. LEGER Brother Leyde St. Leger has just returned from a second relief trip to Haiti, where he handed out food bought with Bermudian donations. He is a M2 team leader and math teacher at Sandys Secondary Middle School in Bermuda. St. Leger, who was born in New York to Haitian parents, spent a week in the country at the end of last month. He also went to Haiti to “help his people” just days after the massive earthquake on January 12. St. Leger receives daily updates on the needs of Haiti.

St. Leger kept an online blog during his trip detailing how the sound of gunshots put him to sleep like counting sheep and how he needed a haircut as a child said he looked like R&B artist R. Kelly. He witnessed tent cities and people bathing in the streets and dreaded raindrops as “with the rain comes fear” of floods, landslides, sickness and spread of diseases. In one emotional blog entry, St. Leger once wrote that he was “crying so hard it was hard to see the screen.” St. Leger bought and distributed hundreds of bags of rice and packages of

spaghetti, which is “like sirloin to Haitians”. He worked “beyond exhaustion” and drove around giving out more than 200,000 servings of food.

St. Leger noted that “life has begun to creep back,“ but Haitians are still “traumatised” and “in shock”. Most are still too scared to enter the buildings that survived. He admitted that “making a difference feels good” and thanked everyone in Bermuda who made donations. St. Leger said: “Bermudians have reached so deep to give. Once again, 100 per cent has gone to mouths to feed.

DR. MILL ETIENNE Brother Mill Etienne is a neurologist specializing in head injuries and epilepsy. He is the son of a cab driver and a housekeeper. He went to Yale and joined the Navy after Sept. 11, 2001, while finishing medical school. He was also one of the doctors aboard the USNS Comfort, a boat sent to Haiti on a mission of mercy after the 6.1 earthquake hit the country.

He is also a Haitian refugee whose family went to New York when he was 5 years old. Etienne works in Bethesda, Md., now, but his ties to Haiti and the disaster are still personal. “The last person we were looking for is one of my cousins. After two days she was discovered underneath some bricks and rubble,” Etienne said. Aside from treating head injuries, Etienne is leading a small group of Creole and French speakers who are on the ship.

He is also counseling fellow doctors about the challenges of treating people they may not be able to communicate with — because even desperate disaster victims deserve the final say when it comes to their medical treatment, he said.

RON “PEPPER” PETERS Brother Ron “Pepper” Peters is an Associate Professor of Behavioral Sciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health. Dr. Peters has held faculty appointments at the University of Houston Department of Health and Human Performance; Houston Baptist University Center for Health Studies; Prairie View A&M University Department of Health and Human Performance; and Texas Southern University Department of Health Sciences. He served as the Director of the Historically Black College and University Applied Research Initiative in conjunction with the Southwest Prevention Center. Brother Peters was also the principal investigator of the Houston Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring Program funded through the National Institute of Justice.

Dr. Peters has published 65 peer reviewed papers revolving around his 12 years of experience in intervention design and evaluation of health promotion research among incarcerated and adolescent populations. His research has been featured in the Washington Post, ESPN, USA Today, ABC News, NBC News, CBS News and a

myriad of other national and international media sources. Dr. Peters’ teaching and service awards include the Distinguished Faculty award, Golden Key Honor Society; African American Alumni of the Year, Virginia Commonwealth University; and Texas Council of Alpha Chapters Hall of Fame, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Dr. Peters is married to Lecresha Peters, M.D., and they have two boys, Ron and Tony.

DR. SAID SEWELL The new executive director of Fort Valley State University’s Academic Success Center is on a mission to move every student toward greatness. Brother Said L. Sewell wants to strengthen the testing, academic advising and counseling services provided at the center, as well as solidify the learning support available outside of the classroom. In addition to operating the center, Dr. Sewell is an Associate Professor in the Department of History, Geography, Political Science, and Criminal Justice at FVSU. He believes there is a strong correlation between high retention, progression, and graduation rates when the students have strong academic support in and out of the classroom.

“It’s our job at the center to help build bridges of greatness not only for the bright students but for all of our students,” Sewell said. “My ten years as a professor and eight years working in

student support have made me keenly aware of the challenges that beset students as well as my colleagues.”

FVSU’s enrollment increase presents new challenges according to Dr. Daniel K. Wims, vice president for Academic Affairs. “The primary objective of the Academic Success Center is to implement strategic mechanisms that will ensure that our students are retained and graduate in a timely manner,” said Wims. “Dr. Sewell’s charge is reviewing and assessing our current structure and making the changes needed that will produce optimum outcomes, efficiency and improved effectiveness. I look forward to listening and learning from faculty, students and professionals about what does and does not work, and then sharing our (ASC) plan for moving students toward greatness.”

African-American males are severely underrepresented in higher education at majority institutions as well as historically black colleges and universities.

Dr. Sewell is working to reverse that trend throughout the nation by addressing the challenges faced by black men in college. His pioneering research as Founder/Director of the Center for African American Male Research, Success and Leadership, Inc. (formerly at the University of West Georgia and now at FVSU) is the first of its kind in the state. The center has received national attention on CNN’s “Larry King Live,” also Diverse Issues in Higher Education and Black Enterprise magazine. “I’m excited to bring the center to FVSU.” Prior to joining the

FVSU family, Sewell was a tenured Associate Professor of Political Science and Public Administration at UWG. Sewell’s academic career began at Morehouse College as a 16-year old early-admit student. A degree in political science jumpstarted a greater interest in the discipline which led him to a Master of Public Administration degree at Texas Southern University. He later earned a Ph.D in political science from Clark Atlanta University and used that expertise to help operate the campaigns of Rev. Jesse Jackson (the 1988 Presidential Campaign), the late Congressman George “Mickey” Leland of Houston (his God-father), the late Mayor of Atlanta Maynard Jackson and President Barack Obama. He also completed post-doctoral work at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass.

An ordained Baptist minister, Sewell is active in Georgia’s NAACP, 100 Black Men, and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. He has published articles about faith-based initiatives in African American churches, community and economic development, religion, politics, and juvenile issues; also three books in political science. He is currently writing two books about African-American male success: “Let Us Make Man: A Conversation with Black Men on Empowering Black Boys,” and “Empowering Black Male Students to Greatness” due for release this fall.

ALPHA DELTA LAMBDA, ALPHA EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Alpha Delta Lambda was established at Memphis, Tennessee, on June 5,

1930. Memphis brothers were called to a meeting and sent Brother T. H. Hayes, Jr. to the Atlantic Convention to petition for the chapter. The petition was granted by the Convention upon the recommendation of Brother Charles W. Greene, Southern VicePresident. Brother Frederick N. Weathers was then authorized to set up the chapter for the General Organization. The first chapter members were Samuel T. Washington; W. P. Atkins; B. T. Johnson; J. L. Brinkley; Edwin C. Jones; Frederick N. Weathers; J. S. Melbane; H. C. Latham; and Thomas H. Hayes, Jr. The chapter grew from 10 to 28 active members within just a few months.

CORNEL WEST ACADEMY OF EXCELLENCE The Cornel West Academy of Excellence (CWAE) is a non-profit organization started to address many of the needs of minority at-risk male students in the 2nd - 6th grade. The academy works to address various issues affecting young boys. Academics, self-esteem, strategic and critical thinking, are key areas that will be addressed.

The academy currently provides its services to 35 young minority male students ranging from the 2nd through 6th grade from Wake County. The program is open to young men from surrounding counties.

The academy will use innovative programs and curriculums to challenge the young men and to raise their academic achievements. To improve the students’ comprehension and writing skills, the Hip Hop Educational Literacy Program (H.E.L.P.) is a literacy program that uses Hip-Hop music lyrics to cap-

ture and hold the attentions of students. The program meets all the standards of the National Education Association. To improve critical thinking, self-esteem, and cognitive skills, the academy will form the Sankofa Chess Club. The club will serve as the foundation for the students to learn and compete at the game of chess.

Studies have shown that chess increases student achievement and thinking skills. The club will work towards participating in local and statewide chess tournaments. The Dare To Be King Mentoring program will be used to help the young men deal with violence and other emotional issues affecting them. The mentoring program will serve as an anti-gang, anti-gun, and anti-violence prevention tool. The Self-Esteem Through Culture Leads to Academic Excellence (SETCLAE) curriculum will be used to teach boys the positive aspects of their cultural heritage and simultaneously increase their self-esteem and their desire to excel.

KAPPA PI CHAPTER OF THE COLLEGE OF WILLIAM AND MARY The College of William and Mary’s Kappa Pi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was recently awarded with the 2010 Governor’s Volunteerism and Community Service Award in the “Outstanding Educational Institution” category.

The award, which is annually given out by the Office of the Governor of Virginia, selects one individual or organization per category out of a state-wide pool of candidates. All candidates must be nominated for an award in one of three categories for

individual achievement awards and five categories for group achievement awards.

The Kappa Pi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity won an award in the “Outstanding educational Institution” category, which is awarded to groups of volunteers that are serving in or from an educational institution, according to the website of the Office of Volunteerism and Community Service for the state of Virginia.

The Kappa Pi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, a five to eight member, historically African-American fraternity on campus, was recently given the award for the service work that the group has done and the impact it has made in the Williamsburg community.

MU MU LAMBDA EDUCATION FOUNDATION, INC. The Mu Mu Lambda Education Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit organization committed to service to mankind, the promotion of scholarship, knowledge and achievement of young minority males in the Western Suburbs of Chicago. Incorporated in 1987, the Education Foundation administers the Mu Mu Lambda chapter’s educational and mentoring initiatives, the Alpha Lite Program and the Beautillion.

Mu Mu Lambda made an early commitment to promote scholarship and youth development. Since the inception of Mu Mu Lambda Chapter, it has focused on the promotion and design of programs that enhance the educational development of our youth.

Brother Clarence Lewis served as the chapter’s first Director of Educational Activities, and Brother Kenneth Watkins

chaired the first Scholarship Committee. The chapter held its first fundraiser on July 9, 1976 at the Ferrara Manor in Chicago, IL.

Brother Clarence Lewis initiated the precursor to the Alpha Lite Program.

Chapter members would host students from the community at their various places of employment and conclude the day with a dinner. Today, the program serves as a model educational program throughout Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc and the nation under the direction of Brother Roy Jones and the assistance of Brother Ryzell McKinney. Alpha Lite sessions in 1992-1993 enjoyed an average attendance of over 120 students.

The chapter’s most outstanding accomplishment continues to be the annual Beautillion. Chapter members were in search of a fundraiser that better represented the Alpha Phi Alpha motto: “Manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind.” The Beautillion was established in 1982 through the persistent encouragement of Brother Art Thompson and serves as the primary source of scholarship awards and the chapter’s program funding.

The success of the Beautillion has allowed the chapter to award over $30,000 annually in scholarships. To date it has awarded over $300,000 to over 250 college- bound students under the leadership of Brother Jadonal Ford (Omega Chapter).

WALL STREET ALPHAS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION, INC. The Wall Street Alphas Charitable Foundation, Inc. (WSACF) was formed to engage in activities that promote

human rights and develop the leadership and strategic capabilities within the African-American and LatinoAmerican community. WSACF intends to promote the rights of African-American and Latino-American communities and other immigrant groups by encouraging educational goals, fostering and assisting in community building, leadership development and strategic planning by providing: • Training and mentoring programs; • Promoting increased access to technology; and • Assisting community-based organizations to effectively carry out their missions.

The WSACF works with a national network of African-American & LatinoAmerican organizations and other institutions to promote programs and events that benefit the African-American and Latino-American communities such as round-table discussions, consensus-building initiatives, and conferences that develop local programs and increase community awareness of issues affecting the African & LatinoAmerican community. Through fundraising, sponsorship and partnering with worthy charities and organizations, the WSACF will facilitate this mission and goals.

Over the years, the events sponsored by the WSACF have raised funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, March of Dimes, Bailey House, the American Cancer Society, the New Orleans Habitat for Humanity, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial. One example of WSACF’s educational activities is the Alpha G.E.N.T.S.

(Gaining Essential Networking Tools for Success) mentoring program. This program was designed to develop male high school students into successful adults by adopting a focused and goal-oriented philosophy through a structured atmosphere that provides them life skills and continuous support.

Our members serve as mentors and meet with the young men monthly to engage in workshops that are fun and educational. We invite ALL to assist the Foundation with achieving our Mission and Goals. We have much to do, but we will save our communities one child at a time.

PRESENTERS

AMBASSADOR ANDREW YOUNG Andrew Young has always viewed his career through the lens of his first career – that of ordained minister. His work for civic and human rights, his many years in public office as congressman, United Nations ambassador and mayor, his leadership of the Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games, his advocacy of public purpose capitalism through GoodWorks International, his efforts on behalf of sustainable development, his active participation in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University, and the establishment of the Andrew J. Young Foundation, are all a response to his call to serve.

Young brings a unique perspective formed by his wealth of experience in

national and global leadership to his focus on the challenges of this era. He confronted segregation with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and galvanized a movement that transformed a nation through nonviolence. Young was a key strategist and negotiator during the civil rights campaigns in Birmingham and Selma that resulted in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

He was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1972, the first African American from the Deep South since Reconstruction, and served on the powerful House Rules Committee, the Committee on Banking and Currency and its Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation, and Finance. While in office, Young sponsored legislation that established a U.S. Institute for Peace, the African Development Bank, and the Chattahoochee River National Park. He negotiated federal funds for MARTA, the Atlanta highway system, and a new international airport for Atlanta.

Young’s support for James Earl “Jimmy” Carter helped Carter win the Democratic Party nomination and election as President of the United States. In 1977 President Carter appointed Young the first African American to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, where he negotiated an end to white-minority rule in Namibia and Zimbabwe and brought Carter’s emphasis on human rights to international diplomacy.

Young became mayor of Atlanta in 1982, during a nationwide recession and a reduction in federal funds for cities. He turned to international mar-

kets for investments in Atlanta, attracting 1,100 new businesses and $70 billion in investment, adding 1 million jobs to the region. He developed publicprivate partnerships to leverage public dollars for projects such as the transformation of Zoo Atlanta.

As co-chair of the Atlanta Olympic Committee, Young tapped into his global relationships to lead the successful effort to bring the Centennial Olympic Games to Atlanta in 1996. He oversaw the largest Olympic Games in history – in the number of countries and athletes represented, and the number of spectators it drew. The International Olympic Committee awarded Young the Olympic Order in Gold, the highest honor awarded by the IOC.

Young is a founding principal and cochairman of GoodWorks International.

Formed out of his belief that free enterprise and private business can improve living standards and reduce poverty in the developing world, GoodWorks advises Fortune 500 companies on responsible business development in Africa and the Caribbean.

Young has received honorary degrees from more than 60 universities and colleges in the United States and abroad.

France has awarded him the Legion d’honneur, the nation’s greatest honor. President William J. Clinton appointed him the founding chair of the Southern African Enterprise Development Fund. Young has authored two books, A Way Out of No Way and An Easy Burden, Civil Rights and the Transformation of America.

Young and his wife, educator and civic leader Carolyn McClain Young, live in Atlanta. He is the father of four and the grandfather of six.

CONGRESSMAN ROBERT C. “BOBBY” SCOTT Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott began serving his ninth term as a Member of Congress on January 6, 2009. Prior to serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Scott served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1978 to 1983 and in the Senate of Virginia from 1983 to 1993.

During his 15-year tenure in the Virginia General Assembly, Rep. Scott successfully sponsored laws that are critical to Virginians in healthcare, education, employment, economic development, crime prevention, social services

and consumer protection. His legislative successes included laws that improved healthcare benefits for women, infants and children, increased the Virginia minimum wage and created the Governor’s Employment and Training Council. He also sponsored the Neighborhood Assistance Act, which provides tax credits to businesses for donations made to approved social service and crime prevention programs.

In November 1992, Rep. Scott was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Through this election, Rep. Scott made history by becoming the first African American elected to Congress from Virginia since Reconstruction and only the second African American elected to Congress in Virginia’s history. Having a maternal grandfather of Filipino ancestry also gives Rep. Scott the distinction of being the first American with Filipino ancestry to serve as a voting member of Congress.

Rep. Scott currently serves on the Committee on the Judiciary, where he is the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security. Rep. Scott also serves on the Committee on Education and Labor and the Committee on the Budget.

In his 17 years in Congress, Rep. Scott has become known as a champion of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, fighting to protect the rights and civil liberties of all Americans. For example, in 1997, he protected the right of all children with disabilities to obtain a free and appropriate education under the Individuals with Disabili-

ties Education Act (IDEA) by leading a successful effort to defeat amendments aimed at curtailing that right for some children. Another example is a bill Rep. Scott sponsored, the Death in Custody Reporting Act, which requires states and localities to report information regarding the death of any person in the custody of law enforcement officials. It was signed into law by President Clinton on October 17, 2000.

Rep. Scott is also a leading critic against warrantless wiretapping and a leading opponent of efforts to permit employment discrimination in federally funded programs based on religion.

Rep. Scott has opposed the War in Iraq since its beginning, having voted against the initial resolution authorizing President Bush to use force against Iraq. At the same time, Rep. Scott is a strong supporter of our nation’s military readiness as well as our troops and their safety. He is a leading advocate for improving and increasing funding for veterans’ benefits and health care, especially mental health care, and was the lead sponsor in the House of Senator Jim Webb’s Post-9/11 G.I. Bill that was signed into law on June 30, 2008.

From the beginning of his tenure in Congress, Rep. Scott has led efforts to pass comprehensive juvenile justice reform and crime prevention legislation and is doing so now by sponsoring the Youth PROMISE Act, which provides resources to state and local governments for research and evidenced-based strategies and programs to prevent juvenile crime. He is also leading efforts to enact legislation designed to reduce high school

dropout rates and increase access to a college education for all students with the Every Student Counts Act. And, as a part of developing universal health care for all, Rep. Scott sponsored the All Healthy Children Act to ensure that the 9 million uninsured children in the United States have access to quality health care.

Rep. Scott was born on April 30, 1947 in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Newport News, Virginia. He is a graduate of Harvard College and Boston College Law School. After graduating from law school, he returned to Newport News and practiced law from 1973 to 1991. He received an honorable discharge for his service in the Massachusetts National Guard and the United States Army Reserve.

Rep. Scott is a member of St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Newport News and is a member of many professional, community and civic boards and organizations.

CHARLES HAMILTON HOUSTON III Charles Hamilton Houston III, Esq. is a litigator with eight years of experience in civil litigation defense with an emphasis in complex commercial litigation. Houston has represented numerous Fortune 500 companies in a variety of practice areas including contract disputes, shipping, personal injury defense, product liability and intellectual property.

Houston holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Loyola University (1994) and a Juris Doctorate from The University of Texas School of Law. Houston was a Dean’s List Student at Loyola and was awarded a full tuition and fees scholarship by the University of Texas. After law school, he served for two years as Senior Law Clerk to the Honorable Damon J. Keith of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

Upon completion of his clerkship, Houston relocated to Phoenix to join one of Arizona’s premiere law firms, Fennemore Craig, as a member of the firm’s Commercial Litigation group.

After five years at Fennemore Craig, Houston left to become a Partner at Thomas, Thomas & Markson, where he represented a multinational retailer in tort litigation and practiced insurance defense while maintaining his commercial litigation practice.

Like his grandfather, noted civil rights attorney Charles Hamilton Houston, Houston is devoted to the philosophy of justice, access and equality for all.

Over the years Houston has volunteered his time and legal services to the Voting Rights Act Commission and survivors of Hurricane Katrina. He also chaired Fennemore Craig’s Minority Writing Internship Program, taught the firm’s Summer Associate Writing Workshop, and served as a mentor to numerous law students of color.

Houston travels, lectures and serves as a panelist on issues related to his practice as well as the impact of the work done by his pioneering grandfather.

DR. LEON D. CALDWELL Dr. Leon D. Caldwell is the President and Executive Director of the National Think Tank for African American Progress, the Director of the Center for the Advancement of Youth Development, and a Research Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at Rhodes College. Dr. Caldwell is a native of West Philadelphia, PA. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and Master’s degree in secondary school counseling from Lehigh University before earning his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Penn State.

He has conducted hundreds of workshops for students, parents, teachers, administrators and community organizations who want to support the success of students. He has been involved with addressing the mental health needs of adolescents through school and community based interventions.

After completing his pre-doctoral training at the University of California, Irvine Dr. Caldwell began his academic position in the counseling psychology program at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln as an Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology. Seven years later he would earn promotion to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure.

Shortly afterwards he joined the faculty of the University of Memphis, then the faculty of the Rhodes College. In 2008 Dr. Caldwell was awarded the MLK award for Dedication and Commitment to Service from Lehigh University.

Most recently, he was the Guest Editor

of a special edition of the Journal of Negro Education which focused on the academic achievement of African American boys.

Dr. Caldwell has been a secondary school teacher and guidance counselor. He has published over thirty manuscripts and book chapters, presented over one hundred presentations and workshops, and appeared on several radio and television programs. He has been featured in newspapers and magazines for his international program and work in underserved and underrepresented communities. He conducts research with middle and high school students that explore achievement and underperformance. He is also a founding member of the Brothers of the Academy Institute (BOTA).

TERRANCE WILLIAMS Terrance Williams is currently Regional Vice President of both the Southern States Operation (SSRO) and the Central Plains Operation (CPRO) for Nationwide Insurance. In this capacity, he is the lead executive and general manager responsible for all agents and employees with profit and loss accountability for both Regions. Prior to this assignment Mr. Williams served in a broad spectrum of leadership roles within Nationwide, including positions as Regional Vice President, New England Operation; head of the Customer Care Center in Amarillo, Texas; Underwriting Director at Nationwide’s Service Center in Gainesville, Florida; and vari-

ous assignments in Claims, Sales, Underwriting and Operations.

Terrance earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Risk Management and Insurance from the University of South Carolina, and a Masters of Business Administration degree from Walden University.

CARLOS FAMADAS Since 2007, Carlos Famadas has served as Chairman of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity.

Phi Iota Alpha was established in 1931 and is the oldest Latino fraternity in the US. Mr. Famadas served in various capacities at the national level prior to joining the Board of Trustees, including overseeing day to day operations as Executive Director. He currently works for new healthcare startup, Telcare, focused in the mHealth space as Vice President of Finance and Operations.

Previously, Mr. Famadas oversaw an incubation group at Treacy & Co. He worked at Allied Capital in Washington, DC in their Operations group working with portfolio companies. Mr. Famadas also held financial and strategic planning roles for XLHealth, a disease management company and healthplan, and for Gen3 Partners, a boutique strategic consulting firm. He completed his MBA at Harvard Business School in 2003. He is a graduate of Harvard University, class of 1999. Mr. Famadas was born and raised in Puerto Rico.

ODIS JOHNSON, JR. Odis Johnson, Jr., Ph.D., is currently an Assistant Professor in African American Studies, and Faculty Associate at the Maryland Population Research Center at the University of Maryland. Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Johnson completed his doctoral training at the University of Michigan and a Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Chicago. Dr. Johnson’s research explores the areas of urban studies, education, and public policy and has been supported by fellowships and grants from the National Academies Ford Foundation Fellowship Program, National Science Foundation, American Educational Research Association, the University of Maryland, and the Spencer Foundation. He offers courses in program evaluation, research methods, policy analysis, and urban/community studies. Currently, Dr. Johnson’s research examines seasonal variation in neighborhood influences on racial differences in achievement for young African American, Hispanic and White children. He also is investigating the relationship between neighborhood rates of male joblessness and indicators of hyper- and healthy masculinity for urban adolescents. Dr. Johnson is a member of the editorial board of the journal, The Urban Review, and reviews frequently for the British Journal of Sociology and the Sociology of Education, among others.

ROLAND W. BURRIS Roland W. Burris is proud to represent the people of Illinois in the United States Senate, where he serves on the Armed Services Committee, the Veterans Affairs Committee and the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Prior to his appointment as the Senator from Illinois, Mr. Burris worked for more than 30 years in both the public and private sector.

He served as the National Bank Examiner for the Comptroller of the Currency, U.S. Treasury Department (1963-1964) and Vice President of the Continental Illinois National Bank, which at the time was the largest bank in Illinois (1964-1973). Following his tenure at the bank, Mr. Burris returned to government as a member of the Governor’s Cabinet, where he became the administrative officer in charge of Central Management Services for the State of Illinois (1973-1977).

In 1978, Mr. Burris was elected Comptroller of Illinois, making him the first African American ever to hold statewide office in Illinois. He served three terms as Comptroller (1979-1991) before being elected as the state’s first African American Attorney General (1991-1995). In addition, from 1991 to 1994, he served as a Trustee to the Financial Accounting Foundation Board.

Before coming to the Senate, Mr. Burris was Chairman/CEO of Burris & Lebed Consulting, LLC, a strategic consulting service. Prior to that post, Senator Burris

served as Managing Partner of the largest minority-owned law firm in Chicago, and was subsequently of council to various other law firms as he continued his private practice.

Mr. Burris served for three years as a Trustee on the Executive Board of the Government Finance Office Association of the United States and Canada.

In addition, he has served as President of the National Association of Comptrollers and President of the National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers, and Treasurers. He also led the successful effort to create a Comptroller for the U.S. Government.

Senator Burris was born and raised in Centralia, Illinois. He attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL , from which he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. He pursued his Masters Degree in International Law as an exchange student in Hamburg, Germany, and went on to earn his Juris Doctor (JD) from Howard University Law School, in Washington, DC. He is married to Dr. Berlean M. Burris, and is the father of two adult children, Roland Burris II, JD, and Rolanda Burris, Ph.D.

WILLIAM T. “TEDDY” MCDANIEL III William T. (“Teddy”) McDaniel III serves as Chief Operating Officer of the Greater Phoenix Urban League. In this role, he oversees Program Development, Strategic Planning and Database/Performance Management, among other responsibilities. Programs

include Early Childhood Development, Housing, College Preparation, Employment and Small Business Assistance.

He manages a $3 million budget, staff of 65 employees, is also responsible for workforce development, event planning and membership services.

Prior to joining the Urban League, Mr. McDaniel spent 15 years in the financial service industry, concentrating in the Franchise Business sector. Prior to his role with the Greater Phoenix Urban League, he was an Asst. Vice President of Sales for GE Capital based in Scottsdale, AZ. In this role, he originated and underwrote over $100 million in real estate and commercial loans to small and medium size franchise businesses.

He started his career with Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City and completed a rigorous financial analyst training program. Thereafter, he spent 3 years with Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, NA, managing a $50 million portfolio of mixed-use real estate properties and underwriting loans to McDonald’s franchisees. In mid 1998, he joined Franchise Mortgage Acceptance Corp. (FMAC) in Greenwich, CT as a senior underwriter for franchise loans. While at FMAC, McDaniel was responsible for over $100 million in senior debt and equity transactions to multi-unit franchisees of national restaurant brands such as Taco Bell, KFC, Burger King, and Pizza Hut. He holds a BA in Finance, with honors, from Morehouse College.

Teddy is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., serving as Chapter Treasurer (Delta Tau Lambda chapter), and former Chair of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund Brunch (Phoenix). A
