Through the democratic process, the people of the United States of America have chosen their leader for the next four years It is now, after the election, that the real task begins and I urge each Alpha man to exercise his citizenship and work for the betterment of our country As Alpha men we form a cadre of college-trained persons, trained for leadership, and we must use all of our influence to insure that Black Americans gain top policy-making positions in the new administration
Even as this is written, the search for persons to fill important government positions is going on While there are some who would have us believe that there simply are not enough qualified Blacks, it is our duty to dispute this misconception We must use our chapter, state, regional and national organizations to bring the many qualified Blacks to the attention of the appropriate persons, regardless of fraternalaffiliation.
STATE CONVENTIONS. We urge your full participation in the upcoming State Conventions. State organizations are the wave of the future for Alpha Phi Alpha and we must begin now to consider giving increased responsibility to State Directors These men are at the center of our activities and have their hands on the pulse of the Fraternity
COLLEGE BROTHERS. As members of Alpha Phi Alpha, our College Brothers must never forget that "Scholarship" is
at the core of our existence Each brother should endeavor to remain on the Dean's List and each chapter should strive to maintain the number 1status in the area of scholarship Alpha is atraining institution, and by striving to meet these goals the life of each College Brother will be enriched for the rest of his life.
EXPANSION. As Black Americans become more and more integrated into this society, Alpha must recognize this fact and aim its expansion efforts to the predominately white institutions of higher learning Many of the best Black students are choosing these schools and these are the students that Alpha wants and must have in order to continue our great heritage.
Finally I would like to thank all those brothers who gave my administration their full dedication and support during the last four years. Only with your help were we able to meet so many of our goals and lay the groundwork for progress in the future. I feel assured that you will give the same support to the administration of Brother James R Williams With your help, he should lead the Fraternity to new heights
GREETINGS:
Brothers in Alpha, while there is still time (and time passes so rapidly), we must extend HOLIDAY GREETINGS to the Brotherhood from our National Headquarters We expect to move ahead for 1977 andto gain knowledge fromourtrialsandproblemsof 1976
Due to many letters regarding the omission of names in the Alpha Phi Alpha Directory of Membership 19751976, and the omission of certain officer and committee reports from the Minutes of the 70th Anniversary Convention(62ndGeneralConvention),this office will submit the following clarificationsofthetwo incidents:
A.P.A. DIRECTORY OF MEMBERSHIP 1975-1976:
The Directory names were taken from our master list of active brothersfor 1976assuppliedbyour contractor, the IMHOFF MAILING SERVICE (The Directory publication was delayed until this year in order that we might have this service provideanaccuratelistofnamesand addresses.) The members of the
General Office Staff personally checked every mailing label, and submitted corrections of same to IMHOFF Wesubsequently received certification that these changes had beenactivated Forthepublicationof the Directory, IMHOFF provided an alphabetical list of these persons to the printer, both Life Members and Active Membership for 1976 Only after this was done were we able to confirm that IMHOFF was not meeting its contractual obligations in that names and addresses which had been certified as "activated" hadnot, infact, been putinto the system Unfortunately, we were not able to change companies at that time due to the upcoming 70th Anniversary Convention (and we were also in the middle of the fraternalyear).
We have since contracted with a new company, EXECUTIVE MAILING SERVICE AND SYSTAMETHODS CORPORATION and the fact that many Alpha brothers omitted inthe Directory did receive a copy of same is an indicationofthisfirm'svastly improved service (Also, theIMHOFF company
hassince gone out of business, due toitsshoddy service tousand other long-standing customers during the pastyear.)
Due to budget restrictions, we wereforcedtoreducethesizeof the Minutes Plans were made to delete the duplication in the MINUTES of the "Reports of Officers and Committees" and the "Report of the Executive Secretary," which had already been printed for the Conventionandpassedout
We sincerely regret these omissions and by increasing a budget suitable toour needs,we cancarry outour servicetothebrotherhood Brothers, until we meet again next year, may your Christmas and New Year be filled with COMMITMENT, DEDICATION, and RECLAMATION TO ALPHAPHIALPHA FRATERNITY.

Perhaps the most troublesome form for our chapterstofileisthe NOTICE OF INITIATION form Most of the problems that have been encountered are due to disregard for: (1) the time period (three weeks) needed to complete the PROCESSING OF NEW MEMBERS, (2) obtaining the APPROPRIATE SIGNATURES on the N.O.I, form, and (3) obtaining and transmitting TRANSCRIPTSandHEALTHCERTIFICATES at the proper time Any of the above, especially (3),willsurelyguaranteethatthe chapter's entireremittance willbe rejected andnot processed until all problems have been corrected (If members of your chapter have not received their initiation materials (Shingles/Pins/History Books), it would bewisetocheckwiththeNationalOfficetofindoutif proper procedures were followed when materials were ordered.)
As a means to eliminate the major problem of "proper timing," Ihave broken down the procedure forfilingtheN.O.I,formintoeasy-to-follow steps: TO SEND OR NOT TO SEND IS NOT THE QUESTION
Dueto the large number of possible misunderstandings involved insubmitting this form,Iwill attempttopresent thestepsassimplyasIcan toensurethateachstepisclearlyunderstood
Step 1: At least one week before Sphinx Club inductionceremonies, copies 1(Green)and2(Gold)of the NOTICEOFINITIATIONformshouldbefilledout withthe NameandDateof Birthof allcandidates for the club Copies 1 and 2 (signed by the Chapter Secretary) shouldthen besent —alongwitha copy of eachcandidate's officialtranscript* —tothe Vice President (orRegionalDirector, whereapplicable)for hisapprovalandsignature
Step 2: After affixing his signature, the Vice President (orRegional Director) willreturncopy 2 to the chapter to be retained Allapproved candidates canthenbeinductedintotheSphinxClub.
Step 3: The chapter should then carry out,as soon aspossible (toallow atleast 15 days before the last pledgeweekforformstobereceivedinthe National Office), the balloting of proposed candidates to be initiatedintothefraternity Afterwards, allcandidates meeting constitutional requirements and affirmative approval of the chapter should then be listed on
copies 3, 4 and 5 of the NOTICE OF INITIATION form. The Registrar of the College mustalsoaffix his signature on copies 3, 4 and 5 to signify the approved candidates meet all of the requirements of thecollege
While the forms are being prepared, each candidate isto have amedical examination and present proofofsametothe Dean of Pledges.
Step 4: Afterallof theabove procedures have been carried out,the chapter isnow ready toforward the following to the Executive Secretary at National Headquarters — all of which must be received 15 dayspriortothebeginningofPledge Week:
A. Completed REMITTANCE OF FUNDS form (see October issue of Sphinx - page 7) alongwith all required fees forinitiates
B Completely filledout OFFICIALPIN ORDER BLANK
C Copies 2,3,4and5oftheNOTICEOF INITIATION form properly filled out (with full names, dates of PledgeWeek, and Date of Initiation onallthreecopies)—andsigned, along with Medical Certificates. (An outline of proposed activities to take place during Pledge Week should show on the backofcopies3,4and5oftheN.O.I.)
Step 5: The Executive Secretary shall certify the receiptof properfeesandtransmitcopies3and4to the Vice President for his signature, and retain copies2and5forthechapterrecordfile
The Vice President will forward copy 3 to the chapter, and copy 4 to the Regional Director (with the medical records) After the initiation has taken place, the Regional Director forwards copy 4 to the Vice President indicating successful/nonsuccessfulcompletionofthesame.
Note: Noinitiation shalltakeplace inachapter, whether college or alumni, except under the supervision of the RegionalVicePresidentorhisdesignatedrepresentative Ifyoufindyour chapter without forms, you should know that Notice of Initiation forms can be obtained from the National Office by just asking for them, which should be done as far in advance of anticipated need as possible Don't wait until the last minutetomailinyour request

Just over three years ago, twentyfive young men merged in an effort to pursue a broadened identity with each other, notonlyintheclassroombutoutside as well. After days of deliberating upon how best to achieve the central purpose of increased communication and social inter-action with fellow students with similar backgrounds and personal and professional goals, the idea of establishing an undergraduate chapter of a national fraternity slowly emerged Thirteen members -a baker's dozen-oftheinitialtwenty-fivewere officiallycharteredasthelota NuChapter ofAlphaPhiAlphaFraternity, Inc atthe UniversityofAlabamaatBirmingham.
The brothers of lota Nu Chapter quickly realized that just being members of aGreek-letter organization and wearing its symbols were not enough. Therehadtobeadirectoutreachtothe university community, surrounding communities and even government, both state and local, lota Nu facilitated its ambitions by quickly becoming active in campus activities such as: student government andGreekcouncil; initiating community projects; and becominginvolvedinlocalgovernment
Thepastyear haswitnessed involvement of lota Nu in nearly every phase of campus activities and innumerable community services Some of these included: United Negro College Fund collections; Red Cross blood drives; detection of breast cancer seminars; area school tutorial service; area council boards; Christian youth services; and coordination of Black HeritageWeekonUAB'scampus.
Based on the above and other accomplishments, lota Nu Chapter, now commonly known as "The Wrecking Crew," wasawardedtheCollegeChap-
ter of the Year Award by the State of Alabama Association of Alpha Phi Alpha In April, lota Nu served as Alabama's official contestant at the Southern Regional Convention in Jacksonville, Florida Again, lota Nu took top honors and was named the Southern Region's College Chapter of theYear
On Thursday, July 29th, brothers of lotaNudepartedfor New YorkCity, the site of Phase I of the General Convention While the representatives of lota Nu were receiving rewarding growth experiences from the convention activities, they eagerly awaited the judging of entries for the College Chapter of the Year award, lota Nu's chronicleofachievementswas critically reviewed by a panel of judges who recognized the chapter's outstanding accomplishments by awarding lota Nu the 1976 Outstanding College Chapter

oftheYearaward, markingthefirsttime in the seventy-year history of the Fraternity that a college chapter from the state of Alabama has been so honored
lota Nu thanks the UAB community for affording it the supportive environment needed for the chapter's comprehensive involvement in campus andcommunity activities

As the nation's oldest predominately Black Greek-letter organization prepares to move into its 71st year of fruitful existence, the reins of Alpha's highest office are turned over to one uniquely qualified to hold this honorable position By constitutional mandate, Brother JAMES R WILLIAMS of Akron, Ohio, becomes General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., on January 1, 1977 - with the Installation Ceremony scheduled by the Board of Directors on January 8th.
Brother Williams immediately laid the groundwork for a progressive Fraternal Year 1977 by scheduling a series of workshops to be held in conjunction with the Installation Ceremonyallowing the brothers in attendance the opportunity to help chart Alpha's
course for the next two years This promises to be only one "first" in an administration dedicated to squarely facing the challenges and responsibilities facing the Fraternity in this decade
A Life Member of the Fraternity, Brother Williams was initiated in Alpha Tau Chapter at the University of Akron He served as President of Alpha Tau in 1959 and later as President of Akron's Eta Tau Lambda alumni chapter during 1963-64 He served as a member of the Education Committee during 196364 and as Legal Counsel for the Midwestern Region during 1967-70. In 1970 he was elevated to the Board of Directors through his election to the
post of Midwestern Vice President - a position he held until 1975
One position held by Brother Williams is a great source of pride to him and to all of Alphadom. That is his post as Chairman of the Board of Alpha Phi Alpha Homes, Inc. (1968-Present). His hard work and dedication to the principles of Alpha Phi Alpha and to the betterment of all mankind were instrumental in this group's successful effort to build Channelwood Village Completed in 1973, Channelwood Village is the Fraternity's 551-Unit, $11.5-Million housing complex for low and moderate income families. Channelwood stands today as a testament to the Alpha continuedonPage16

Brother James R Williams, 25th General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., has been frequently characterized as a 'doer', by those both within and outside our fraternal ranks. This label was justly earned through his intensive efforts in the Fraternity, politics, civic and community affairs, and the church Further, all indications are that it will be verified through his service as General President.
Born in Lownes County, Mississippi, Brother Williams was reared in Columbus, Mississippi and attended Union Academy High School in that city. He received both the B.A and Juris Doctor degrees from the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio Presently an Attorney-at-Law and member of the firm of Parms, Purnell, Stubbs & Williams, he formerly taught in the Akron public schools for four years, lectured in Senior Problems at the University of Akron, and served as Senior Staff Member of the City of Akron's Department of Planning & Urban Renewal (five years). He has served as a City Councilman in Akron since 1970 and in addition is Chairman of the Summit County (Ohio) Council of Governments
A devout family man, Brother Villiams is married to the former Catherine Douglas of Columbus, Mississippi High school sweethearts, they graduated together in the Union Academy Class of 1953 While Cathy was the valedictorian of that class, she delayed her education to raise their two children - Jacqueline, 16 and a high school student, and Michael, 20,a sophomore at Morehouse College in Atlanta and a member of Alpha Rho Chapter there. Mrs. Williams currently teaches elementary education in the Akron Public School System
Active in many community organizations, Brother Williams is President of the Summit County Legal Service Program; Past President of the Summit County CAP Agency; Past Vice President of the Ohio NAACP; Past President of the Brotherhood of Wesley Temple AME Zion Church Additionally he serves or has served as a member of the Executive Board of the following: NAACP, Metro YMCA, Summit County Democratic Party, and Treasurer of NEFCO (a five county regional planning agency)
It is through his efforts in these and other groups that James Williams
became nationally known as an aggressive leader. Naturally his work in the political arena has attracted the lion's share of the media attention He was a candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Ohio in 1974 and was unopposed in the last election for his fourth term as a Councilman from Akron's 4th District. In the City Council, he is known for his work in housing and neighborhood preservation (as evidenced by Channelwood Village) An important and controversial part of that struggle has been his effort in support of gun control - a cause he has championed since his election to the Council in 1970 After sponsoring two unsuccessful gun-control ordinances, his third effort resulted in the passage of an ordinance in 1974. He was subsequently labeled "The Man Who Killed The Saturday Night Special" in an extensive article and interview in The Beacon, the Sunday Magazine of the Akron Beacon-Journal
Brother Williams has received honors from many civic organizations for his outstanding work in the community and was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the National Association of Regional Councils (NARC)
Jim Williams has earnedthe title of a "Doer". A fewyears agohe could only look atamodel ofChannelwood Village
An important part of Brother Williams' success can be found in his personal philosophy and that in turn is squarely rooted in the philosophy of Alpha Phi Alpha When asked (by Beacon writer Richard Zitrin) about his tendency to tackle volatile political issues, Brother Williams stated "My philosophy in politics is if I can't accomplish something - there's no need to be there." He brings the same philosophy of progressive service to Alpha's top leadership post. It promises to serve the Fraternity well!

THE WILLIAMS FAMILY: Like manyAlphas, Brother Williams receives strong support in his endeavors fromhis family. Shown above, theyare(leftto right)daughterJacqueline; wifeCatherine;andson,Brother Michael Williams ofAlphaRho chapterat Morehouse.

heritage and to the leadership abilities ofournewGeneral President.
Prior to taking office as General President, Brother Williams did extensive work toward developing a national program that would utilize the maximum potential of the Fraternity in the interest of the Brotherhood and for the benefit of all mankind By studying the dynamics and resources of Alpha, the slogan "Back to the Basics" evolved as the theme of the Williams administration and national program Therein, Brother Williams states, lies our greatest legacy and to recognize and build upon that legacy is our greatest assurance of success. Pillars ofthisprogram, asidentifiedby Brother Williams, include: strengthening our systemsofcommunication (int> ,aland external); streamlining the 'delivery of services' apparatus; increasing our membership; and expanding our outreachandservice projects
Labeling "membership" one of the most critical challenges we face, Brother Williams has proposed an aggressiveandunifieddrive throughout the Fraternity - with the twin goals of the Initiation of men of character and vision, andamassiveReclamation effort

Brother Williams leadership role in Alpha began during his term as President of Alpha Tau chapter (1959).
aimed at our inactive Brothers He has also called upon the membership to realistically come to grips with the administrative capabilities of our national headquartersandotherelementsaswe look for ways to improve communicationsandbringnewefficiency to thedeliveryofservicessystem
Alpha Phi Alpha has always been a leader in community outreach and Brother Williams has made this area another important cornerstone in his national program He has called for a systematic approach tosuch projectsidentifying areas of interest and need;
structuring strategies and programs; and, most importantly, seeking broad commitment from the membership (financial and otherwise) to insure that each program under the Alpha Phi Alpha banner is carried out effectively andsuccessfully
These and other program thrusts provide the promise of dynamic new eraofprogressinAlphaPhiAlpha Each Alpha mancan now identify thearea in which he is most interested and begin now to make his contribution to insure the progress of the Fraternity - under the leadership of Brother Williams Of course, Brother Williams has received many honors during his years as an Alpha man, including the following; Eta TauLambda"ManoftheYear" - 1969; "Outstanding Achievement Award" for work on Channelwood Village - 1973; Midwestern Region "Exemplary Service Award" - 1975 However, the signal honor lies in his election to the Office of General President and the culmination of that honor will lie in the success of the progressive programs offered under his leadership This forms a challenge not only for Brother Williams but for each and every Alpha Man Andif leadership isthe key, itisa challenge that surely will be met - to thebenefitof"AllMankind."

ATLANTA has been described as the "Bold New City of the Future" ... and Alpha men have been instrumental in the city's phenomenal growth The Brothers pictured are in the forefront among the leaders of this dynamic city...

71st Anniversary Convention
August 5-10,1977
The Atlanta Hilton

The Date: October 31, 1976
The Place: Ruleville, Mississippi The Occasion: The presentation of the 2nd Paul Robeson Humanitarian Award and Medallion to MRS.
FANNIE LOU HAMER.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc joined citizens from this Mississippi Delta community and across the state in paying tribute to Mrs Fannie Lou Hamer on this occasion The day had been declared "Fannie Lou Hamer Day" in Ruleville by the Mayor, Dr Virginia Tolbert, and people young and old crowded into the auditorium of the Ruleville Central High School TheAlphadelegation, ledbyGeneral President-Elect James R. Williams, included Dr.James A. Parker, Jr. of Red Bank, New Jersey (Chairman of the Paul Robeson Committee); Southern Vice President Ozell Sutton of Atlanta, Georgia;ActingMississippiStateDirectorWilliamK Deaseof Jackson; and other brothers from around the state Brother Parker presented Brother Williams to the assembled crowd and the General President-Elect delivered the presentation address andmadetheawardto Mrs Hamer, who expressed profoundgratitudeforthis honor
The program included other notes of tribute from various community and civic leaders, including aspecial address by Mayor Charles Evers of Fayette, Mississippi, the first Black mayorofanintegratedtowninthestate
General President-Elect Williams captivated the audience with his remarks, tracing the career of the legendary Paul Robeson, drawing a parallel with Mrs Hamer's own distinguished work, and reminding those gathered that "the struggleisstillnotwon."
Itisanunfortunate possibility thatsome readingthis article will haveto pause andask "Who isMrs Hamer?"and "Why did she receive this award?" (an honor previously extended only to the late Brother Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.) Unfortunate because Mrs Hamer's life andwork have been an inspiration to thousands for whom there once was no hope Her efforts in civil rights in the Mississippi Delta and throughouttheSouthbroughtnewdignitytoBlacksinthisimpoverishedareaandcatapulted hertonationalattention. But, media attention isfleeting at best and, like the movement itself andother leaders inthisfield, Mrs Hamer'sefforts were soon shelved infavor of "detente," "shuttle diplomacy," and the like But this dynamic lady continued to struggle, continuedtocare, andcontinued to giveher alltothe service of mankind.Likethe legendary PaulRobeson, shecontinued to laborasothers found itmore convenient toturnandlook the
other way Thus, itisfitting that Alphachose to honor her in thisfashion.
Mrs Hamer, born October 6, 1917, the youngest of 20 children, moved to Sunflower County, Mississippi when she wastwo yearsold She received her early education in local public schools and, like most Blacks in the area, began working inthe cotton fields at the age of six -chopping and picking cotton, until the plantation owner learned that she could read and write With this discovery, she became the time and record keeper for the plantation and functioned in this capacity for several years This relatively decent station (for a Mississippi Black plantation worker) probably would havecontinued hadMrs Hamernotbrokenalocaltaboo-by attempting toregister andvote Immediately followingthis effort, she was ousted from the plantation and moved to Ruleville
Thenext severalmonthssaw Mrs Hamergainthe national spotlight as a part of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee's Task Force, raising funds for voter registration projects in several Southern states This began her long involvement withthe causeof freedom and humandignity Itis indeed ironic that the vindictive act of the plantation owner, rather than achieving its desired purpose of keeping one Black from registering, led to the wholesale registration of Blacksintownsandruralareasthroughouttheregion
As a result of her complete involvement with this movement, whichcontinuestothisday,Mrs Hamerhasbeen hospitalizedseveraltimes But,likeRobeson, these setbacks have merely served as springboards for a renewed dedication to the cause I had the opportunity to visit Mrs Hamer at her home following the awards ceremony and she repeatedly expressedherprofoundgratitudeforhaving been chosen to receive this award She related to me that Paul Robeson had long been one of her idols and proceeded to recite his many accomplishments in athletics, theatre, and human rights This writer could not help but be slightly embarrassedformanyofthesewerethingsthatIdidn'tknow At the same time, however, Ifelt doubly proud of my Fraternity for having had the insight to reach into this little Delta town (andSunflower County ismy home)toidentify aperson who trulyepitomizesthelegacyofPaulRobeson
Fannie Lou Hamer — Alpha Phi Alpha salutes you! And I would hazard a guess that if Brother Robeson himself were alive, he'd agree that a more deserving recipient could not havebeenfound MichaelJ Price

Magnetic brown eyes warmly greet you. They follow your every word, every gesture. And now . . . she speaks. Thesoft, gentle voiceflows easilyand smoothly... engulfingyouinan aura oftranquility.
The songbegins.Shedances.Herfaceisetchedin concentration and involvement. Her every movement is a nimblenoun, asweeping verb,a rhythmic adjective, the limberlanguage ofthemodern dancer.
Theseriousness pauses. Her face brightens. Thefresh floral petals of her soul spring forth in full bloom. Her laughter is the sun touching you as you first step outdoors.

Her name is Denise Antoinette Smith, a senior Early Childhood Education major at Georgia State University, the recently crowned "Miss NationalBlackand Gold- 1976" of Alpha PhiAlpha Fraternity, Inc
Miss Smith recently reflected on her experiences with Alpha. "I have avery positive and enthusiastic reaction fro her selection) mainly because I have been in touch with so many positive people beginning with Zeta Mu (Chapterat GSU) to the (Southern Alpha) Region and now the nation. I would surmise that whatever criteria is drawn between Alpha and myself, I would represent Alpha that way I imagine that I'll have to do mostly public relations work and I look forward to that."
Were there any particular memories or experiences in the lovely Atlantan's mind from her ascension to the national throne? "I found that I was pushing myself to work harder, to become more involved in different organizations, and to really give of myself in general."
Denise believes in involvement. In addition to her studies, she has participated in the Black Student Life Cultural Committee, INCEPT (New Student Orientation), Black Alliance, Student Government Association Consumer Protection Committee and SGA Communicator Committee, as well as The Atlanta Dance Theater Apprentice (under scholarship) Denise has also done volunteer work for the Cystic Fibrosis Campaign, Carrolls Day Care Center, pantomime choreography for Union Baptist Church and West Hunter Baptist Church, and book store sales consultant for the Hillside Chapel and Truth Center
In addition to these varied activities, Denise has made the Deans List With Distinction, received the GSU Senior Award, and was given a plaque and scholarship as The MostOutstanding Modern Dancer of the Denise D. Smith School of
Dance in 1975 She was also ajudge for the 1976 Miss U.S Talented Teen of Georgia.
There is a time for relaxation in Denise's busy life. She enjoys hobbies of modern dance, philosophical reading/writing, music (all forms), art dabblings, piano tutoring, and choreography
One would wonder how such a versatile and involved young lady crossed paths with Alpha Denise reflects, "When I first started college, I was under the impression that fraternities and sororities were mostly fun organizations that really didn't have definite purposes. I didn't really understand, so perhaps I prejudged too quickly As I grew older and became more involved with things at school, I started to notice some positive people that I liked and was drawn to and, thereby, wanted to be associated with. They happened to be Alphas.I feel that they're a group of generally positive men, competent inwhatever field they choose to be competent in Therefore, I have faith in whatever they do."
Denise's proud parents are Mrs Victoria A Smith and Robert A Smith She also has two brothers, James and Victor. "My family generally is very proud of me. I know it's because of the love we have as afamily that I've been able to become MissNationalBlackandGold."
Finally, Denise extended a nation-wide message to all Alphas "I encourage them to keep on being their beautiful selves; to continue to express that positivism that they've always expressed; and, as they support each other, to keep on supporting their queen —and,of course, I'm sure she'll do likewise with such inspiration."
Her name is Denise Long live the Queen! — John Y. Moreland, Jr. Editor's Note: His name is Benjamin Jenkins, President of Zeta Mu, Georgia StateCollege

"Alpha Phi Alpha has had a glorious past. It has long withstood the test of time through its contributions to mankind in all major fields of endeavor. Alpha must continue this thrust. In doing so, it must 'return to the basics.' Alpha Phi Alpha requires that old-fashioned year-round dedication at the local level which filters to the regional and national levels to produce the change needed for humanity in this new age. We must give direction to the helpless, provide guidelines for systems, and, above all, remember our history and proceed."

In the urban community of Norfolk, we, the men of E Pi, have dedicated ourselves to the task of tutoring school children in the Bowling Park area Coupled with this tutorial program are cultural activities (museums, exhibits, points of interest) and recreational activities. With the participation of the Alpha Sweethearts and other Greekletter organizations the program has been acomplete success
In the area of campus services the men of E Pi are still the "trend setters." Through the Alpha "book exchange," a non-profit program geared to help students purchase books at a reduced rate, the chapter renders a tremendous service The chapter has profited through the appreciation of the student body and the community alike.
The leadership of the chapter is not to be overlooked. E Pi, under the strong leadership of President Bruce Alvin Young II, has motivated the brotherhood into various areas of campus leadership With the opening of the school year, Brother John S Greene Jr was elected President of the Senior Class and Chairman of the college's Voter Registration Drive Brother Greene is a Graphic Design major with honor standing He is also President of the NSC Art Guild Brother Milton Bailey, a junior in History Education, was recently elected President of the History Club Brothers Bruce Young, Samuel Gregory III, and Anthony Sizemore are involved in a "Cluster Program," designed to motivate students in the area of business and to help them in areas of job opportunities, qualifications, and interview procedures
The Epsilon Pi Chapter is continuing to carry the name of Alpha onward and upward toward the light We are the "trend setters" and will forever serve mankind and hold high the name of our beloved Fraternity.
JohnS. Greene, Jr.
To begin this fraternal year, Alpha chapters in this great state are proud to present THE CONNECTICUT REPORT
There are three alumni chapters in the state: Beta Sigma Lambda (Hartford), Eta Alpha Lambda (New Haven), and Zeta Phi Lambda (Stamford), as well as two college chapters: Zeta at Yale University and Kappa Delta at the University of Connecticut An application for a new college chapter at the University of Bridgeport has been made to the Committee on Standards and Extension by State Director Otha N Brown Jr., under the sponsorhip of Zeta PhiLambda
Three Alpha men in Connecticut recently made political history Brother John Hargis, a corporate executive of Capitol Records, became the first Black to be elected Chairman of a local Democratic Party in the state. Brother Hargis is Town Chairman of the Democratic Party of New Canaan, a town with less than 300 Black residents A former President of Zeta Phi Lambda, Brother Hargis is also President of the local NAACP, which has the largest membership inthe state.
Otha N. Brown Jr. (former Councilman, Majority Leader and member of the Connecticut State Legislature) was appointed Temporary Chairman of the "Carter for President Caucus of Norwalk." He was later elected Permanent Chairman of the Carter Committee in the state's first presidential preference primary and, subsequently, was elected the only delegate from his town to represent Carter at the Democratic National Convention Brother Brown was also the only Black person elected to a National Convention Committee from his state, as he was first elected a temporary member of the Rules Committee by the State Central Committee and, later, was the only one of three temporary members to be elected to the permanent Rules Committee. Brown became the first Black to run for the city's only State Central Committee post While he did not win, he was given credit for negotiating the election of the first Black State Central Committeewoman (from his city and county) as a result of a deadlock between the other candidates At the 70th Anniversary Convention in New York, Brother Brown was a recipient of the Elmer C. Collins Award (at the Life Membership Breakfast) for outstanding
individual contribution to the Life MembershipCampaign
Brother John Hargis was given the 2nd AnnualSenator EdwardW. Brooke Award byZeta PhiLambda Chapter for makingthemostsignificant contribution to civic and political affairs in Southern Fairfield County for 1976 The award, which was firstawarded toOtha Brown during hiscampaign forthe Democratic nominationforMayor, waspresentedat a Dinner-Dance in Norwalk on October 8th
Brother William Jones made history by becoming the first Black in Connecticut to be elected Chairman of a major city Democratic Party Jones is Chairman of the New Haven party organization, replacing a twenty year veteranofthejob Aformer New Haven Alderman, Brother Jones is considered oneoftheareasmostastute politicians
The brothers of Beta Sigma Lambda in Hartford have also made political news Clyde Billington,State Legislator, is considering a run for the State Senate A recent Life Member, Brother Billington would also be a leading candidate for Deputy Speaker should he chose to remain in the house Brother Gerard Peterson, Alderman in the City of Bloomfield, came out early asaCarter supporter and was elected Chairman of the Carter campaign in his city Brother Gail Stockham, the only Black member of the Board of Education of Stratford, distinguished himself as the Chairman of the Carter for President committee inhistown Hewasvery active at the Connecticut Caucus each morningduringthe Democratic National Convention, incharge of operations on behalfofthepresidentialnominee
Connecticut Alphas arepolitically active "We may be small -but, we're on theball."
Beta Nu Chapter (FAMU) has formulated a Fraternity Choir -in order to serve the community in the name of Alpha This group has performed in a number of community churches in the Tallahassee area and has traveled to Jacksonville to perform During the Christmas season the choir caroled in the Tallahassee Mall and donated money to the Salvation Army after caroling The chapter also played a prominent role ina special program, in memory of Brother Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., given by the FAMU Student GovernmentAssociation

To foster the spirit of brotherhood, themembersofthechapter havesponsoredanumberofcrabbing expeditions -culminating inacrabboilanddelicious dinner
Afterfinishingwhatwasahectic year for the chapter, President Clarence Davis noted, "We've only begun to serve the community in Alpha's name." Other chapter projects include a HalloweenPartyforcommunity children and a city-wide essay contest in the Tallahassee high schools The essays will be on "What the Bicentennial Means to Me."
It iswith great strength and courage that the brothers carry the torch of the Fraternity anditishopedthatduringthe coming year the brothers of Beta Nu will once again demonstrate their love for all mankind - "All in the name of Alpha."
Delta Rho Lambda Chapter (SanAntonio) took an active part in this yearthe 200th Anniversary of our country and the 70th Anniversary of our great Fraternity We have experienced both
problems and successes during this period. Though the first meeting was climaxed by installing new officers, the chapter encountered the problem of an officer not performing adequately This was remedied by the Executive Committee'sappointment ofanother brother tothisoffice
San Antonio chapters (college and alumni) were hosts for the state convention inFebruary That iswhen many of thebrothers learnedthefull meaning of the word "brotherhood." As long as we work together, we keep harmony among ourselves The convention was a big success and General PresidentElectJames R Williamswasoneof the guests. Though we love soul food, since San Antonio is the "capital" of Mexico, the formal banquet menu consistedofMexican food
Delta Rho Lambda was well represented at the Regional ConventioninBeaumont,Texas.Asthepurpose of these meetings is communication, some serious topics were discussed at the convention One problem on the agenda was "Alpha Angels" and it was generally agreed that without adequate guidelines these groups might adversely affect the fraternity
ThemonthofMaywasagood period for the brothers in San Antonio. Our committees (RitualandSphinx) worked together and escorted five candidates across the burning sands to see "the light of theworld." AsJune represents Gemini in astrology, two projects took place First atribute toOmega Chapter
brothers, and, Delta Rho Lambda worked with the brothers of Epsilon Sigma for the UNCF Drive. Alpha Phi Alpha won the 1 st Place trophy, competing against fifty groups in the city The Alpha Sweetheart gave the brothers a dinner party at the Frost National Bank cocktail lounge July saw the Annual Picnic take place, allowing the new brothers and their families to be introduced to the Alpha "family."
Although there is sometimes a gap between college and alumni brothers, the brothers in this area stress communication. Thus, Epsilon Sigma invited the brothers of Delta Rho Lambda to participate in Probate Week activities In order that we stay close together in the bond, the brothers (old and young) joined together to teach the new brothers the full meaning of brotherhood.
"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity."

The Eta Kappa Chapter located at Louisiana Tech University (Ruston, LA) celebrated its 5th Anniversary on April 24, 1976 The entire week was set aside for this special occasion Events to capture the pride, honor, and grandeur of this chapter's special day included: attending church services dedicated to brothers of the chapter (at the beginning of the week); an attempt to let the college campus and community know of Eta Kappa's presence and willingness to serve; and, a sincere RE-DEDICATION/RECLAMATION Service to re-emphasize the goals of Alpha men
The highlight of the week was a Banquet-Dance at the Terrace Room of the Holiday Inn, to which all area chapters were invited The speaker for this event was Southwestern Vice President George Thompson The brothers were then presented corsages by their Sweethearts and Alpha Angels, as a symbol of appreciation for their involvement in college life
Guest chapters included Delta Sigma (Grambling State U) and Epsilon Kappa Lambda (Grambling) The brothers of Eta Kappa treasured the presence of these brothers and their lovely dates
The week ended with a party at the University President's cabin on Lake D'arbonne, where all brothers (including most of the founders of the chapter),
