APA APA LIFE LIFE

Steve Upton speaks about how he built TruStar, making sure it's in the right hands, and his next chapter.

Almost on a daily basis, I'm reminded of something one of my mentors often said, "Change is the only constant in life " And making the transition from hospitality to automotive, more than proves his point

My knowledge of the latter is about as brief as it gets: I own a vehicle. I drive a vehicle, something I made crystal clear during the interview process. Somehow, Jan and Steve decided to take a chance and allow me to transfer my skills, both professional and soft If they hadn't, I would have missed the AGM!
Speaking of which...It was overwhelming, for sure, but the directors, shareholders, suppliers, and even vendors were gracious to answer my questions. The first to beckon me over was Denso. Though David Arriaga had stepped away, Jose, Rodney and Steve gave me a crash course in OE 101, which I found very interesting. There was also Tony Picarello who's been with FMP for the past nine years Picarello explained the aftermarket industry can be tough, but also rewarding to those who are willing to work After sitting with Adam Fell with Walker Products, I now pay close attention to the lights on the dashboard each time I start the ignition. It also brought a smile to my face hearing Ed Seymour had one idea that blossomed into another. Finally, if Larry Friesner's (DRiV) boss had been around, he may have been called aside for spending so much time with me (smile)
My maternal granddaddy, a man of few words, would say, "Don't tell it all, tell on it " So, I'll close with this. As I see it, APA has been around for 49 years, but not by happenstance. It's a result of an idea, the right team in place, and a visionary. Will I ever understand it all? Of course, not, but when questions do arise, Steve and the team, board members, and even suppliers have made themselves available And this time next year, I'll give a warm smile and hearty wave to Tiffany and Ben (Victory Imports), see Sonny Riddle (NewTek Automotive) and call him by name, and trade public speaking pointers with Ed Harake (Value Plus Auto Parts).
Oh, and I must catch up with Paul Sachdeva (Singh Auto Parts), and enjoy ice cream with the Swedlove Brothers.
Growing together, Gili

Passing the Baton: From One Steve to Another

Now that the deal is done, maybe Upton can finally cast his line and tee up.
