BEVERLY CENTER
The Beverly Center is situated in Beverly Hills California and is a reference point for many Los Angelenos. It originally opened in 1982 and has become one of the main destinations for shopping in Los Angeles. As with many of the mall shopping centers built at that time the Beverly Center had become dated and was in need of being refreshed.
The renovation was based on the concept of fluidity and consisted of three main elements: opening up the building to bring in natural light, reconfigurating the floor openings, and unifying the exterior.
To bring in natural light a new skylight was integrated that winds throughout the entire mall and then terminates at a large glass facade with views of the Hollywood Hills and the downtown LA skyline. Additionally, large glass sections were added at the two main entrance escalators on the sixth floor to take advantage of the views, create a
connection with the outside and provide a location for seating areas for a cafe or restaurant.
The floor openings were completely rebuilt using oval shapes to bring a fresh look to the center and were based on the concept of fluidity which permeates the entire design. The interior face of the oval openings are covered with a backlit perforated metal metal mesh that comes alive in the evening.
On the exterior an expanded metal mesh that was fabricated in Italy covers the parking levels 1-5. It undulates around the building creating a dynamic facade and unifying the complex.
My role was as Project Leader and Senior Designer. I led the project from Schematic Design through Construction Administration (3 years). Passing through all the phases of a high budget complex project with many consultants and a reputable Client.
ROOF PLAN showing location of "river" skylight. The new skylight had to fit within the existing roof monitors in order to minimize structural modifications. The food hall area at the end of the skylight is the only area where we built a new structure to tie into the existing structure. ▼

The pattern also highlights seating areas at the end courts and center "grand" court. The dashed projections lines show the floor openings above to the 7th floor. ▼

The winning proposal for the 1.200.000 m² trade complex in Dubai South, UAE provides flexibility for changing markets and its modular structure allows for future expansion.
The Dubai Global Connect will be a hub for international trade. The complex is composed of a trade market, entrepreneurial center, offices, museum, auditorium, hotel and residences. The organization is based on three main spines: marketplace, trade, and urban.
The main concept of the project is to provide flexibility to accomodate the varying spaces required by traders and in order for the complex to grow as needed. To achieve this a modular system was designed for the marketplace that can be fabricated off-site and assembled on-site relatively quickly. It
also has the ability to expand and is easily repeatable.
My role in the competition was as Senior Designer. I presented the project to the Investment Corporation of Dubai (Client), which was attended by the Executive Director & CEO, H.E. Mohammed I. Al Shaibani. Additionally, I traveled several times to Dubai to meet with the Client to prepare our scope of services and delivery stategy as well as leading conference call meetings to clarify project requirements.
I worked closely with the two main consultants ACT II (structural) and Transsolar (Climate Engineering) to develop the modular structural system and design an efficient heating/cooling system that included passive design strategies. Such as natural air ventillation and shading canopies.

The International Convention Center in Jerusalem is a landmark building and is located at the gateway to Jerusalem. The project consists of renovating the convention center, and adding commerical spaces, office towers and a hotel.
The new development will play a key role in densifying this section of the city and the urban plan for the site was designed to provide clear pedestrian areas, and integrate with current and future transportation systems.
As project leader I met frequently with the Client in Rome and in Jerusalem. In order to gain government approvals for the project an analysis of the urban plan was prepared
and presented to the regional committee of Jerusalem. I had to prepare and present clear concise arguments for our objections and navigate the various interests of all the stakeholders involved. In addition I worked closely with the local architect who had been involved in the early planning. This process took about one year to complete and required many meetings in person and via web conferences.
There was a broad range of stakeholders and consultants involved in this project which required careful listening, gathering of information, discerning the information and deciding on the best course of action in order to achieve the client’s goals.

MY ZEIL RECONFIGURATION FRANKFURT, GERMANY
As project leader and senior designer for renovations to the MyZeil shopping center I worked very closely with the property management team from ECE Projektmanagent and the owner Deutsche Bank. I lead workshops and presentations with the client in Frankfurt proposing multiple options that met their requests.
The client requested to improve the flow of circulation from the ground floor to the upper floors, create a new indoor outdoor dining terrace at the main facade, and
provide a terrace design for the existing west facing facade.
The design modifications included relocating the entrance escalators, adding escalators at the center of the complex, creating an outdoor terrace, and designing a bar/restaurant at the south terrace.
It was a challenge to add an additional escalators, working with the existing structure and to maintain the curvaliner fluid forms that make the shopping center so unique.

AUSTRALIA FORUM
Fuksas Architecture in collaboration with GMB Architecture won the competition for the Australia Forum reference design. The project will be awarded to a partnership consisting of an architect, developer, and financier. I worked closely with GMB in order to eastablish the most qualified team.
Being a PPP project there were many stakeholders involved which required meeting with each of them to acquire the pertinent
information in order to prepare the best bid.
I led the preparation of our delivery strategy which outlined in detail all of the memers of the team and how the flow of information would work between them. Expecially since our main office was in Rome we needed to clearly define our working stategy in additon to providing examples of previous projects where we worked internationally and delivered successful projects.

ROME CONGRESS CENTER EUR, ROME
The Rome Congress Center is situated in the historical quarter of Rome EUR. The design idea can be reduced to three parts: the glass case, the cloud and the blade.
Within the cloud is where the auditorium is located that seats 1.850 persons. The project started in 1998 and was inagurated in 2016. By the time I became involved in the project most of the structural work had been completed and the finishes were being completed. I had to learn every detail of the project because I became the go-to
guide of the project. I brought many journalists, prospective clients and dignitaries to visit the project. I had to describe the history of the project down to the complex structural engineering of the cloud form and the silicone coated glass fibre fabric used to enclose the cloud.
One interesting structural element is that the cloud is not directly connected to the glass enclosure. They function as two independent elements that move seperately in the case of an earthquake.

The design of the Tushino Residential Complex synthesizes with the site’s natural surroundings, through green pathways that pass throughout the site and connect to specific landmarks such as the river, schools and nearby sports facilities.
The form of the building follows these pathways and creates internal courtyards that are semi-private but have an immediate connection to the public green spaces adjacent to the building. Throughout the site water is also integrated that
ultimately terminates at the River nearby. The extruded glazing elements are situated to maximize the most desireable views.
I was the Project Leader for this competion and I worked with a team of between 8 to 12 architects. I lead workshops with the Client and coordinated with all the consultants on the project. A major component of this project was providing an economic design with a detailed cost analysis; we analyzed building systems and materials which are appropriate/economical for
