From the Head of School The 2018-2019 school year brought with it many changes and new faces including several new administrators in addition to myself. I know I speak for all of us when I say we could not have asked for a warmer welcome. The students, faculty, and parents in our community continuously offered a helping hand whenever needed. The support we received represents only a fraction of the effort and love our community members poured into supporting our school throughout the year in many different forms. One way that the vast majority of you supported AOS is through monetary donations. Thank you to everyone who donated to AOS during the 2018-2019 school year. It is through your gifts that we are able to continue our school’s mission and provide a world-class education for our students. Whether you gave to the Annual Fund, joined us at the Gala, or underwrote the Olympics, you contributed to the sustained success of the school by providing vital income for operations not covered by tuition. Additionally, many families supported the Bid from the Heart campaign, which reflects your understanding of the importance of continued professional development. As a longtime educator, I am fortunate to be part of a community that values continued investment into our faculty and staff. Not only do these investments greatly benefit your children, but they also help AOS attract and retain top teaching and professional talent. AOS is truly a special place, and your participation and support of the community makes it the nurturing and supportive environment that it is. Dear AOS Families and Friends:
From the Board Chair
This past school year was an especially exciting one for AOS as Dr. Samuel V. Fragomeni started his tenure as the third Head of School in AOS’ history. Dr. Fragomeni’s administrative team included several other newcomers to AOS: Head of Middle School, Heather Haas; Director of Extended Day Center, Emily Benton; and Director of Communications, Isabelle Dom. This new team, along with many wonderful new and returning families, faculty and staff, created the perfect formula for a great year at AOS. The students and teachers continued settling into the new building, and took full advantage of the many learning opportunities created by the improved environment. We are looking forward to the arrival of new furniture for the Middle School classrooms and Library in time for the 2019-2020 school year, which will be an important upgrade for all students. The transformation of the Yoakum/ Kipling corner continued this year, as Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral completed the expansion of its sanctuary in time for its 100 year anniversary celebration. It is now possible for the entire school to attend Chapel together in this incredible, inspirational space. I’m also pleased to report that the AOS Annual Fund had a very successful year, and the remaining balance due on the loan for the new building is just under $3.5 million. This lower than anticipated loan balance was made possible by the prepayment of pledges by our generous donors and the strong financial position of our school. We are so grateful to the many members of the AOS community who contributed to the Annual Fund and capital campaign.

The implementation of the AOS Strategic Plan kicked into full gear this year under the enthusiastic leadership of Strategic Planning Committee Chair Sean Maher, working in tandem with our dedicated and focused administration and faculty. During the year, the Board formed two ad hoc committees to further the vision of the Strategic Plan: the Endowment Committee, chaired by Tom McGee, and the Master Planning Committee chaired by Kevin Cokinos. The Endowment Committee is evaluating ways to grow the AOS endowment, and the Master Planning Committee is considering Phase 2 of the master plan, with special attention to the fine arts, enrichments and athletics. We look forward to hearing from both of these committees in the coming year. The end of this school year marked the end of Board service for John Anaipakos, Joy Posoli and Andrew Schroeder. I want to thank all three members for their strong commitment to AOS, and their hard work and many contributions as Board members. I want to especially acknowledge former Board Chair John Anaipakos for guiding AOS through many significant milestones over the last three years. We were fortunate to have such a thoughtful, clear thinking and inspirational leader during this period. I also want to recognize the entire Board for their steadfast support during this transitional year. I am looking forward to the coming year and continuing our work together to ensure that the school we love is protected and enhanced.

Annual Fund The 2018-2019 Annual Fund Chairs Lauren Cancienne and Shelly Katz would like to thank the AOS community for the generous and enthusiastic support of the 100% in 100 Days Annual Fund Campaign. The fund raised over $850,000 to help cover the gap between tuition income and the operating budget for the School. The fund is an investment in our students because funds raised directly benefit their academic and extracurricular experiences today. Thank you to our parents, board, faculty and staff, grandparents, former parents, alumni, matching gift corporations, foundations, and friends for helping us surpass our fundraising goal. Congratulations to our Board of Trustees and our faculty and staff, who once again supported the fund at 100% participation! We appreciate the members of the Annual Fund Committee who act as ambassadors of the fund all year. Because of their belief in the importance of the fund and the mission of the School, over 82% of all current parents made a heartfelt gift to the fund. Thank you for making your annual gift to the Annual Fund a priority!

Icon Installation
Honorarium and Memorial Donors
The beautiful icon of “Christ the Pantocrator” (“Christ the Ruler of All”) was donated by Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral to AOS last summer. The icon had been in the dome of the Cathedral since its construction in the early 1950’s. This icon, which is typically found on the ceiling or in the central dome of Orthodox churches, depicts Christ as Almighty God, who reigns over heaven and earth. The icon is now in the foyer of the Glassell Main Building, and was installed through the generosity of the many AOS donors listed below. It is a priceless gift that will grace our school, and will always remind the AOS family of the special relationship between AOS and the Cathedral.

From the Parent Teacher Club President
The 2018-2019 school year at AOS was an exciting one! It was a year of change, growth,and community-building. We welcomed new administrators, continued to “grow into” our Lower School space, and brought back the AOS Gala, Embarking on our first ever gala-break with great success. None of this would have been possible without the dedication and devotion of our parents, faculty, and staff – thank you! From a newly made over Back to School Breakfast (which now allows us to escape the heat of late August!) and “Diving Into a Good Book” at our annual Book Fair and Spaghetti Dinner to a pre-historic Olympics for the ages and Fine Arts Week which changed locations to beautifully showcase student art, community building was truly the theme of the year. It was amazing and inspiring – a true testament of what AOS means to so many – to see our community members come together to ensure the success of these events. In addition, we hosted speakers (Parent Education), supported our community during both celebratory and difficult times (Care), recognized our greatest assets (Grandparents & Special Friends, Faculty & Staff Appreciation), assisted our amazing faculty (Helping Hands, Christmas Program & Robes, Classical & Musical Countdowns, Art Angels, Room/ Team Parents), and cheered on our school (Spirit Sales, Team Sports). We also worked to take care of (Used Uniforms & Lost and Found), beautify (Visual Arts Exhibition), and better (Service) our local and broader communities. Without the chairs and committees of the events and activities listed above, coupled with your involvement and the support of our faculty, staff, and administration, we would not be able to offer our students and families this amazing environment and experience. Simply, AOS would not be The School for Hearts and Minds without you.

Dads Club The AOS Dads Club had another successful and fun year! For the fifteenth year in a row, the Dads Club continued to provide additional funding and support to the School’s programs. This year, they contributed over $40,000 to the school, ending the year with an account balance of $72,000. In 2018-2019, they helped fund a large format video projector for the Steve G. Caloudas Activity Center and artificial turf in the middle school recess area. They also continue to provide annual contributions to the School and the Jimmy Pappas Fund, with the remaining funds being saved for future school requests. In addition to their generous financial support, the Dads Club provides opportunities to gather dads, make new friends, and strengthen the AOS community. Dads Club 2018-2019 event highlights include:
