Tunnel Pattaya Opens

Officials unveil the longawaited Central Pattaya Tunnel At 2:00pm on the afternoon of the 25th of August, the central Pattaya tunnel, located on Sukhumvit Road, was officially opened by Mr. Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, from the Min-

istry of Transport.

Also present at the grand opening was Chonburi governor, Mr. Prakrathorn Thaichai, Mr. Chatchai Thipwichi, the local permanent secretary, officials from the Department of Rural Roads and the mayor of Pattaya, Gen. Anan Charoenchasri as well as

a large media presence gathered to publicize the event.

Mr. Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, the Minister of Transport, explained the importance of the new tunnel which will help reduce traffic congestion in and around Pattaya.

The location of the tunnel along

one the city’s main intersections will assist Pattaya in accommodating the large numbers of visitors who come to enjoy all that Pattaya has to offer as a major tourist destination.

Funding for the long-awaited project was awarded by the Department of Rural Roads and the

total cost of the development is expected to be around 837 million baht.

The new road system is approximately 1,900 meters long with four lanes, each 3.5 meters wide. The tunnel also features a roof which closes down to 420 meters.

It is hoped that opening of the tunnel will not only reduce traffic and make entering and exiting Pattaya more convenient for locals and tourists alike, but also help bolster the local economy within the newly improved tourism industry.

Thai Garden Resort receives 4-star rating yet again Every three years, all the hotels that are a member of the Thai Hotels Association, undergo a rigorous inspection to determine if they are qualified for a star rating.

The inspection team consists of members from the Thai Travel Agencies, the Hotel Standard Association, the Thai Hotel Association, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, and members from the local provincial government.

The Thai Garden Resort has qualified for as official four-star

resort since 2009.

This year again, it has qualified to continue holding its four-star rating, which is now valid until 2019.

Instilling Willpower Willpower Institute offers meditation courses to tourists On the 10 th of June 2016, Luangphor Viriyang Sirintharo, the founder, developer and master teacher of the global Willpower Institute network, introduced a meditation course entitles “Kojarasa-Samathi” which is aimed at promoting meditation to tourists.

The goal is to offer foreign tourists from various countries visiting Thailand and Pattaya, an op-

portunity to participate in meditation classes during their stay, conducted by our qualified instructors in English.

Although it is often not simple to run the English Meditation Course in Thailand, the use of clear goals and proven systematic methods of teaching developed

Austrian wine festival raises money for kid’s fund Recently, the Thai-Austrian Society held a celebration of European wines at the Thai Garden Hotel Resort in Pattaya.

The main purpose of the event is to promote new wines which are now available for purchase and the vice president of Pattaya, Mr. Apichart Weerapal was one of the

many honorable guests invited to the celebration.

The event also included a dinner and guests were treated to traditional Austrian musical performances and wine tastings.

However the celebratory nature of the event also had a charitable purpose, all the proceeds raised on the day will be donated to the Father Ray Foundation to be used

for the education and care of disadvantaged and disabled children.

Khun Atchima Chaowalitumrong, the fundraising manager of the Father Ray Foundation also attended the event and brought along students enrolled at the foundation’s schools to enjoy the Bandltanz, a traditional Austrian show.

Patrolling the Skies

Royal Thai Air Force trains air marshals In a country such as Thailand, which generates so much of its revenue from a thriving tourism industry, there was little surprise this month when the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) announced its plans to implement counter-terrorism measures on commercial flights within the Kingdom.

Millions of tourists travel to and from Thailand each year and many of these people also take advantage of affordable internal flights to facilitate their travel around this beautiful country.

In the age of increasing threats of terror-related attacks at airports and onboard planes themselves, the RTAF have stepped up their security by implementing training programs that will ultimately lead to air marshals being deployed on domestic commercial flights.

Air force chief Johm Rungswang, from the RTAF’S Security Forces Command, has ordered future air marshals to undertake a one-

month training program which commenced on the 1st of August.

The Security Forces Command has selected 40 officers to take part in the training course which will supplement officer’s previous commando and special operations training.

The training, which is run in accordance with the Air Navigation Act and international regulations as specified by the UN’s aviation agency, the International Civil Aviation Organization, will include theoretical study and practical assessment of how trainees deal with potential hostage taking and hijacking situations.

It is believed that once fully trained, the air marshals will be deployed in plain clothes as to not alert would-be terrorists to their presence.

These marshals, as well as being equipped with specialist counterterrorism techniques, may also be armed to enable them to do be able to deal with a possible security threat during the course of the flight.

It is believed that the air marshals will be stationed on flights deemed to be at risk of incidents or en route to countries which pose a terror threat to national security.

Although this is the first such training course of its kind in Thailand, it is not the first incident of air marshals having been deployed on flights in the Kingdom. Previously, officers have been stationed on Thai flights as a safeguard against terrorism but they have not been armed or been part of such a training scheme.

The initial training course will be concluded at the end of August and it has been suggested that the first batch of newly training air marshals will be sent on operations shortly afterwards.

For us members of the general public, we will most likely be unaware that such officers are present on our flights. But whether we notice them or not, we can rest assured that Thailand’s finest are ensuring our safety whilst they patrol the skies.

The future of hospitality?

Airbnb chief meets with Thai Tourism Minister As Thailand moves towards a more technologically advanced and innovative future, so too, the hospitality industry as we know it may be changing to better meet the needs of consumers in the technological age.

This could mean big changes ahead, particularly in Thailand’s number one beach resort Pattaya, where tens of thousands of hotel bookings are made every year.

At least, that is the view of Airbnb co-founder and chief strategist Nathan Blecharczyk, who recently visited Bangkok to meet with senior Tourism and Sports Minister Mrs. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul.

For those who don’t already know, Airbnb is an American founded, online marketplace which offers hospitality services to both property owners and travelers looking for accommodation.

The premise of the online service is that it directly connects those who wish to rent or lease their properties with those who seek to

use them on a short-term basis, charging both parties a nominal service fee in the process.

So then, why is this such a big deal?

Well, since being founded in 2008, Airbnb has grown to having over 3,000,000 listings in 65,000 cities, across 191 countries.

Last year, it is estimated that over 980,000 foreign tourists used the site to book 55,000 different accommodations across Thailand.

This represents a 150% increase in sales over the previous twelve months, generating somewhere in the region of 13-billion baht’s worth of revenue.

So then, isn’t this just a case of successful supply and demand?

Well in short the answer is no.

Airbnb is currently illegal in Thailand as many of the properties listed do not hold valid hotel licenses and are therefore in violation of the laws governing the hotel industry.

Thai authorities have made an effort to clampdown on these activities in the last few years, issuing fines and sanctions to those who are not in compliance with the law.

That is where Mr. Blecharczyk’s meeting with tourism chief, Mrs. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul comes into play. Airbnb have remained committed to agreeing terms with local and national governments in their respective countries of operation. This trend may continue as the pair met to discuss how the legalization of the site could help bolster the tourism industry through its housesharing platform.

Properties listed on the site would have to show some form of compliance with licensing laws. Although this may initially create extra work for those wishing to list their properties, it can be ar-

gued that providing certified properties to the consumer will increase customer satisfaction and may help grow the business even further.

One major appeal of the Airbnb listings is their affordability in comparison to conventional hotels, particularly where large groups of holiday makers book an entire house, villa or even castle together.

This obviously affects the level of business generated by traditional hotels and clearly many of those already operating in the tourism industry are threatened by the growth of online sites such as Airbnb.

So then, what is the solution to help ease the fears of traditional hoteliers? Well like any marketplace, online or other, competitive pricing and quality of service will ultimately win the day.

If some hotels are losing trade to cheaper forms of accommodation, then perhaps they are the ones who need to change their operations.

The tourism industry in Thailand is thriving, particularly in cities such as Pattaya which have always remained customer focused. Last year, nearly 11 million travelers used Airbnb services in Asia and this number will only rise in the coming years.

Indeed, it’s not only foreigners who are using Airbnb. Over 350,000 Thai people have used the service in over 100 countries across the globe. That number also represents a year-on-year growth of 150%.

With more and more property owners looking to register on the site and increasing numbers of consumers wishing to stay with them, it seems that Thailand should embrace this new age of tourism.

Connect Thailand event held by the TCEB At 10.30am on the 16th of August, the Seaford Ballroom of the Hilton Pattaya, hosted the “Connect Thailand: The Kingdom of Leisure” event.

The ceremony was overseen by the vice president of Pattaya and was attended by the development director of the Bureau of Foreign Affairs and officials from the Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB).

The operation comes as part of the TCEB’s promotion of Thailand’s Meeting, Incentive travel, Conferencing and Exhibition industry (MICE), within the EEC. The TCEB hope to grow the MICE market in Pattaya, Hua Hin and Bangkok by making use of high speed transport links.

The international media group at this meeting were presented with examples of MICE within the three destinations, featuring the high

class accommodation available and cultural highlights from various event venues.

There has been an increase of MICE travelers during 2017 and TCEB expect MICE numbers to reach 27.1 million, generating revenue of over 155 Billion baht.

This revenue is expected to strengthen such operations within the EEC as the local economy benefits from increased tourism and sales.

Local Business Matters

Pattaya Business and Tourism Association meeting held Recently, in the Thapphraya conference room of the Grand Sole’ Hotel, located on Pattaya 2nd Road, the vice-president of the Pattaya

Business and Tourism Association, Mr. Ratanachai Sutthachai, presided over the monthly meeting of the association’s board members to discuss important matters related to Pattaya’s business com-

munity.

During the meeting, association members invited local business representatives, to inform them of issues such as effective methods of treating wastewater and details regarding the operations of beach umbrella rental services on Pattaya Beach.

In addition, representatives from the Navy were invited to inform those present, of updates regarding the preparations for the upcoming International Boat Exhibition 2017 to be held here Pattaya.

Future of Electricity

PEA host annual electricity conference Recently, the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), in cooperation with the Association of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers of Thailand, held the 33rd annual Consumer Electronics Industry Conference, under the title “PEA 4.0: Moving toward Electric Utility of the Future”.

The theme of the event centred around Thailand’s move towards Thailand 4.0 and involved discussing the upgrading of the regional electricity generation in accor-

dance with the move towards the 4.0 era.

The focus of the event was the commitment to developing the future of the electricity industry, incorporating people with innovative ideas, and implementing new technologies and knowledge to make the electricity industry a technology-driven field.

During the course of the event, special lectures were delivered to the attendants by representatives from the Provincial Electricity Authority entitled the “Modern Services of PEA 4.0” and the “Modern

Industry in the 4.0 era”. The lectures aimed to raise awareness about the potential enhancement of service power quality, energy conservation, alternative energy that is available and how modern technology in the electrical system can be used.

National experts in the field were present on the day, and there were also exhibition booths run by regional electricity providers which included Q & A consultations on individual business issues raised by those in attendance.

Child Rights and Wrongs

Legal Experts educate local school At 9.00am on the 18th of August, at the conference hall of Pattaya city school 11, the vice president of Policy and Planning was joined by the Secretary General of the Lawyers Council under the royal patronage, in presiding over the opening ceremony of the “Legal Dissemination Project for children and youth in the Pattaya area”.

Also in attendance was the president of the Pattaya Association, the attorney general of the Pattaya Law Office and his deputy, as well as the Head of Academic Affairs, the director and governor of Pattaya City school 11 and representatives from the Lawyers Council of Thailand.

The meeting comes as part of a project to increase the legal knowledge of children and young people

in the Pattaya area, in matters relating to law and order and the compliance with the national constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand, as well as the national economic and social development plan.

Those in attendance were also informed of child rights by the legal committee members and voluntary lawyers present.

Murderous Son

Man kills father before being shot by police A massive police hunt for a man who reportedly killed his father before attempting to track down and kill his mother, ended on the morning of the 22nd of August, after officers located the suspect and shot him during the gun battle which followed.

26-year old Surachai Chainan had previously threatened to kill everyone in his family, prompting his mother, wife and young child to flee their home in Lop Buri for fear of their safety.

Mr. Surachai’s father, Sgt. Maj. 1st Class Chaiyos Chainan, who had been stationed at an ordnance depo in pursuance of his role within a military maintenance hardware unit, had stayed at the

residence, presumably to keep an eye on his troubled son, which the media has reported, was suffering from drug addiction.

The already dark situation, took a drastic turn for the worse on the 21st of August, as Mr. Surachai stole a weapon and ammunition from the nearby Por Pibulsongkram shooting range.

He then fled on a motorcycle to his house, pursued by soldiers and police.

Once sheltered inside the building, Mr. Surachai hid himself in the upstairs of the house. His father Mr. Chaiyos, was requested to try and coax his son from out of hiding and to attempt to give him a meal laced with sleeping tablets.

Upon entering the property, Mr. Chaiyos attempted to reason with his son but was soon shot dead and Mr. Surachai fled the scene on his motorcycle.

Police tracked Mr. Surachai to a resort in the neighbouring district of Sing Buri. It is believed that the suspect had made his way there to attempt to kill his mother. Police took the rest of Mr. Surachai’s family, including his mother, into police protection while the manhunt continued.

After Mr. Surachai was identified at the resort on the morning of the 22nd of August, Pol Maj Gen Ditsapoj Issarangkul Na Ayutthaya, the chief of police in Lop Buri, ordered the installation of road blocks to ensure that Mr. Surachai could not escape justice.

Ambassador Visit

The officers involved in the operation to apprehend the suspect were warned to take extra precautions as Mr. Surachai was already known to be armed and particularly dangerous.

During the attempt to apprehend the suspect, police received resistance and gun fire from Mr. Surachai. A gun battle ensued, during which, the suspect was shot and wounded. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital to receive emergency first aid treatment.

It is not known at this time whether Mr. Surachai’s injuries are life-threatening, but what is known for sure, is that if he survives his injuries, he will face criminal prosecution for the coldblooded killing of his father.

Thai officials welcome South African Ambassador At 10.00am on the 21st of August, at a conference room of Pattaya City Hall, Mr. Geoff Doidge, the Ambassador of the South African Embassy, was welcomed to Pattaya by the city mayor Pol. Lt. Anan Charoenchasri, and the Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Apichart Weerapan.

Mr. Doidge thanked his hosts for their warm welcome and ex-

plained his interest in coming to Pattaya as wanting to observe the administrative structure of this world-famous tourism destination.

The officials present at the meeting also discussed their future cooperation in the fields of urban development and the management of the Thai tourism industry.

Police take part in exercise dance classes Pattaya police are investigating a new method of keeping fit and reducing stress. Police chief Apichai Krobpetch has invited his officers to take part in Zumba dance exercise classes as a way of promoting good health and re-

laxation.

The event is to be held every Wednesday at 4.30pm, in the car park of Pattaya City police station.

It is hoped that as well as helping officers unwind from their stressful jobs, it will serve to increase their efficiency and improve their overall work performance.

Premier Oil raises production guidance Premier Oil has raised its full-year production guidance after production output jumped a record 35% in the first half of the year.

The oil and gas explorer also said it expects to produce more than it anticipated on its Catcher project in the North Sea, which is producing first oil later this year.

Premier expects to produce about 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, 20% higher than previous estimates, after test flow rates were “above original prognosis” Full-year production guidance, meanwhile, has been raised to between 75,000 and 80,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, up from 75,000.

Premier’s cash flows in the six months to June 30 were $292m (£228m), up from $108.7m in the same period of the previous year.

The company was able to reduce net debt to $2.74bn at the end of

June, from $2.77bn at the end of last year.

Earlier this week, it confirmed reports that it will sell its 33.8% stake in the Wytch Farm oilfield for around $200m and release letters of credit amounting to approximately $75m.

Premier’s battle to pay off debts has been made harder by the floundering global oil price, but chief executive Tony Durrant heralded the completion of its refinancing. Earlier this year, Premier agreed a deal to reset debt after nine months of negotiations with its lenders. This was completed after the first-half period ended. ”Premier continues to deliver excellent operational performance, which will drive free cash flow and the reduction of net debt,” he said. ”Following the successful completion of our refinancing, we are ahead of plans to restore financial strength while progressing a number of exciting projects for future growth.”

Walmart and Google announce deal to compete with Amazon

The new deal will enable Walmart customers to buy products online

via Google Home’s voice activated smart speaker.

It is Google’s biggest partnership within the retail sector and will enable both companies to challenge Amazon’s dominance of the US voice shopping market. Indeed, Amazon’s AI virtual assistant Alexa already enables users to shop directly from the online retail giant.

According to research from eMarketer, in the US, Amazon has a lion’s share of the voice-controlled device industry, with its Echo devices accounting for 72% of the market in 2016, compared to the Google Home gadget’s 22%.

However, Walmart and Google’s new partnership could see that current dynamic change significantly within the coming years. Walmart’s latest venture into voice-activated online shopping will integrate its quick reordering tool into Google’s same-day delivery service.

The president and chief executive of Walmart’s US eCommerce division, Marc Lore said that the “exciting partnership” would help it make shopping “faster and easier” for customers. ”One of the primary use cases for voice shopping will be the ability to build a basket of previously-purchased everyday essential”, he added.

Via expanding the use of voice-activated shopping across 4,700 stores, the retailer hopes to “create customer experiences that don’t currently exist within voice shopping anywhere else”.

Miriam Burt, a research vice president in retail at Gartner, said that the move is not just about revenue or technology, but more about making customers’ lives easier. ”We need to watch the cohort of customers that’s starting to grow around this, particularly Gen Z, which is anyone born after 1995, who are highly influential,” Ms Burt told the BBC. “They’re very much into conversational commerce, through instant messengers like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and WeChat. ”If you translate that into this, shopping is very convenient for them with voice activation. But whatever way you interact with the retailer, it has to be a really good customer experience from start to finish. If parts of that experience are bad, it will be very hard for the customer to be loyal”.

Do you hate your reading glasses?

If so, keep them on and keep reading, help may be at hand!

Unfortunately, the need for reading glasses is a natural progression of aging. The first sign is the fact that you have to hold this newspaper further away to be able to read it, and you also find that you need a good light to be able to see the words clearly.

Eventually you run out of arms, and you succumb and buy reading glasses. This means that you have become a slave to your spectacles. Like the Amex card, at your own risk, never leave home without them! Eventually you keep one pair at home, another in the car and another in the office. And your nose gets funny indentations either side of the bridge, where the

spectacles settle.

It is important that you understand just why this happens. As you get older, all the ‘elastic’ tissues in your body become less pliable. Knees, lower back, fingers, neck, the list is endless. However, you have to add to that list, the lens in your eye. The fiddly little lens, supplied at birth as a standard feature, does not have a fixed focus, but under your control you can make it focus close up (to read) and then also focus at a distance, such as when you are following your golf ball as it slices into the water hazard. The way you do this is by ‘bending’ the lens to be able to focus on near objects. Unfortunately, as the lens becomes less pliable, the muscles in your eye become unable to bend

the stiffening lens enough to produce the near point focus. The near point moves further away, until you have run out of arms, as described previously. We medico’s call this condition ‘Presbyopia’.

Unfortunately there is yet another result of aging that occurs in the lens of the eye. This is a gradual cloudiness which lowers the visual acuity, slowly lowers your ability to see colors, and eventually brings on blindness. So not only can you not see well enough to read the magazines, but you also begin to lose your distance vision. Welcome to the wonderful world of white sticks and woofing Labrador dogs.

The (partial) answer is IOL’s (Intra-Ocular-Lenses) where we can replace the cloudy hard lens with

a clear lens. The patients can see again, but does need reading glasses, as the standard IOL has a fixed focus. So now we come to the latest development in special multi-focal IOL’s. HERO Awards HIV & LGBT heroes set to shine at new Asia-Pacific community service awards BANGKOK, 23 August, 2017: The work of HIV and LGBT community heroes from across Asia and the Pacific is set to be honoured at a special event in Bangkok in November, with organisers of the first ever HERO Awards currently seeking nominations from community members across the region.

Standing for HIV, Equality and Rights, the HERO Awards is a gala event which acknowledges outstanding service to the HIV response in Asia and the Pacific, and to the region’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities.

Taking place on Sunday the 12th of November at the Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel, the Awards is a special inaugural event that has been organized to coincide with the tenth anniversary commemorations of APCOM, a leading regional HIV and LGBT community network. The event will also raise much needed funds for APCOM’s vital work in relation to HIV education, prevention, treatment, care and support, and human rights. The Awards are also being supported by several other regional HIV and LGBT community networks including the Asia Pacific Transgender Network (APTN), the

Asia Pacific Network of People Living With HIV/AIDS (APN+), and the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Association in Asia (ILGA Asia). UNAIDS is also supporting the event.

Community members and supporters throughout Asia and the Pacific are invited to nominate individuals and organizations across seven (7) categories who have made significant contributions to the health and rights of LGBT people and people affected

Helping Hand

E-subsidy scheme moves forward Thailand’s poorest are soon to receive much needed relief in the form of electronic subsidy cards according to Finance Minister Apisak Tantivorawong.

The latest information on the government help scheme was released following a ministerial meeting on Friday the 25th of August. Speaking after that meeting, Mr. Apisak stated that 11.6 million people will start receiving their cards on the 21st of September of this year and the scheme could be used nationwide as early as the 1st of October.

Registration for the project began in May with an estimated 14.1 million attempting to sign up at

various banks involved in the scheme. Of that number, 11.6 million were approved to receive financial help whilst the remainder were disqualified for failing to meet the criteria set out in the conditions of the scheme.

Formal cabinet approval is still required before the official launch of the welfare project but is expected that this will be given within the next month.

Those who receive the cards will receive subsidies on essential items such as water, utility fees, public transport assistance, small scale agricultural products such as fertilizer as well as discounted products available at the ministry’s Blue Flag outlet stores.

Finance officials have also stated that a 40-billion-baht public welfare fund will be established to help those most in need and donations into the pot will be gladly accepted. The subsidies will be issued monthly while unused monies will be ineligible for accumulation.

The move forward in the scheme will come as great relief for Thailand’s most impoverished, many of whom (approximately 88%), live rurally on less than 1,500 baht a month.

Thailand’s move from a low income to a middle income nation has seen poverty rates fall dramatically from the late 1980’s.

This improvement gave Thailand the prestigious accolade of being an economic growth success story and an example to other low income countries.

The Asian financial crisis of the late 1990’s increased poverty rates initially with the number of Thai citizens living below the poverty line estimated at around 21% in 2000. Since then, recovery has been slow but steady and the most recent estimates put the poverty figure at around 12.6%.

There is still much work to be done to help those living below the poverty line but the government remain optimistic that they can help reduce poverty even further in the future.

Chonburi family disaster as house collapses A young woman died and her family members were injured recently when their house collapsed during the middle of the night.

The horrendous event took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning on the 22nd of August.

The family home, which was situated near a jetty in Sattahip district in Chonburi, fell into the sea below whilst the family slept inside.

The deceased has been formally identified by officials as 24-year old Punyanuch Buasathian. At the

Mr. Warinthon managed to escape the building just in time, and also helped his 6-year old nephew, Notnicha Buasathian, and 62-year old mother, Sirikorn Buasathian, flee the building as it collapsed.

Sadly, his younger sister Punyanuch was unable to make it out in time and fell into the water as the building disintegrated.

All three surviving members of the family were rushed to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for various injuries, including bruis-

Bodily Harm Quite often we have seen a lot of cases where bodily harm is inflicted, there are many bars and there are always a lot of people who will spend time there to drink the alcohol. Sometimes they will get too drunk and end up in an argument which will turn into a fight with the other person. If later on the party that was injured goes to the police station to report that Mr. A hurt Mr. B then the police will send the injured party to the hospital for medical treatment. With the medical treatment the doctor will diagnose and give the proper care to the injured party but they

will also give a statement of how serious the injuries are and how many days the victim will have to be treated. The amount of days hospitalized carries with it harsher punishments on the party that inflicted the injuries. If a person is accused of inflicting bodily harm to another person they are liable to be punished by the law with up to two years imprisonment and/ or a fine of up to four thousand baht. If grievous bodily harm is inflicted then the punishment will be six months to ten years imprisonment.

Grievous bodily harm are as follows:

1) Deprivation of sight, deprivation of hearing, cutting of the tongue or loss of the sense of smell.

2) Loss of genital organs or reproductive ability.

3) Loss of an arm, leg, hand, foot, finger or any other organ.

4) Permanent disfiguration of the face.

5) Abortion.

6) Permanent insanity.

7) Infirmity or chronic illness which may last throughout life.

8) Infirmity or illness causing the sufferer to be in severe bodily pain for twenty days or to be unable to follow the ordinary pur-

suits for over twenty days.

The main point of this is that whenever you go to the police station after an incident has happened, if the police believe your case and go to arrest the person that hurt you, they can make a judgment on whether they are guilty or innocent. Or the other way around if they find evidence and judge that both sides are liable then they will not investigate anything but will then sue both parties to be the co defendant of which you will have to prove your innocence to the court. The Thai court judge has the authority to convict bother parties or just one side; this is all based on which side has the best case with the strongest evidence such as wit-

ness testimony.

Lawyer Comment: Please understand that once you go to the police station to file a report the Thai police will ask you to compromise and finish the case together, if you don’t want to do that you will have to prove that you are not guilty. This can be difficult if you are intoxicated as well, maybe some witness saw that you are the cause of the case of causing bodily harm or maybe the other side will make up the witness to point to you to say that you are the one who is in the wrong. It happens a lot in Thailand if you’re not sure that you’re one hundred percent not the cause of anything. The way we have experience in fighting cases like this, we have to check if

they have any camera records or CCTV system installed as these systems cannot lie. Please ask the police to check the venue or location of the crime for use as evidence, being convicted of this crime or even the punishment may not be too severe in most cases but it is enough for the authorities to deport you as foreigner who is staying in the Kingdom but is making problems. New Development Launched on Koh Chang

Local Pattaya developer Siam Royal View Resort, also owns one of the largest mixed-use developments on the island of Koh Chang.

Stuvik fought hard for 4th place at Fuji!

The 7-8th round of the Blancpain GT Series Asia took place at the Fuji Speedway which sits on the foothills under the famous Mt. Fuji. The driver Sandy Stuvik would once again be partnered

by Croatian driver Martin Kodric.

Friday’s practice sessions saw generous amounts of rainfall, which is Sandy’s favourite condition to drive his Lamborghini Huracan GT3 in. The sessions went well as the Thai driver and team developed the set-up of the

car to prepare for the weekend’s races.

Saturday morning saw a dry Qualifying session, and having not tested on the Fuji circuit in the dry, Sandy and the team did the best they could, and managed to qualify in 6th position for Race 1, and 15th position in Race 2.

Race 1 took place under the sun and heat of Mt. Fuji, the team and drivers would yet again be tested as this heat would mean a different set-up for the car. After a fantastic start, Martin Kodric managed to gain 4 positions and hold 2nd place until the pit stops. Sandy then got in the car, but due to the 7 second success penalty, (for finishing 2nd at the previous race in Suzuka) Sandy exited the pit lane in 3rd position. The Thai driver managed to maintain his position until the charging Mercedes of Maximilian Buhk overtook him to take the final podium spot. Eventually, Sandy finished in 4th position overall, and 3rd in Silver Cup class.

Despite the ominous clouds hov-

ering above the Fuji Speedway, the circuit remained dry much to the despair of the Thai driver. It would be a difficult job for Sandy starting from 15th on the grid.

After a decent start, Sandy managed to gain a few positions and was fighting to break into the Top 10. While Sandy was fighting the other cars his Lamborghini Huracan GT3 had a fuel pressure problem and the Thai driver lost

all power. He managed to limp to the pits where the team solved the issue. A few laps later Sandy handed the car over to his teammate, and the pair would eventually finish in 24th place.

‘We had a weekend of ups and downs, we know what issues we had, and unfortunately some of those were out of our control.

From Fuji I will take with me a 4th place finish, and I’m sure that

in the next race in Shanghai we can continue our improvements,’ says Sandy.

TROPICAL GOLF GROUP Friday August 25, Mountain Shadow - St John Davis Conquers Tough Mountain Shadow!

It was “moving day: for the Tropical Golfers. This was the last round before the duel Golfer Of The Month and Monthly Mug contest next week. If you wanted to move up the standings to have a chance to win GOM, this was the day. Its not going to be easy though as the destination was Mountain Shadow – always a tough one. With that in mind seventeen golfers showed up to make the move if they could.

The layout at Mt. Shadow is tough and tricky. Before getting to course condition we should point out there is some action on the neglected clubhouse. The rotted and torn carpet has been replaced by

tile, and the change is noticeable.

We don’t know what else they have planned inside and out, but this is a good step in a fine setup just in need of some TLC, also known as money. Overall course condition is currently good-fair, and the greens were quite nice. The already intimidating layout was by the fact the rough was extra long and swallowed more than a few balls. Final scores showed that sometimes you fight the course and the course wins! Humble pie on the menu?

Still, not everyone was beaten into submission.

A-Flight (0-19): Only one player kept his head and seriously challenged the course, and that was John Davis (c/h 15). John had the best score of they day with four shots to spare and seven in his

flight with an impressive 35 points!

Well done! This puts JD in first place for the race. Next was John Hall (16) with 28 points, and then Mashi Kaneta (16) over double countback loser Steve Truelove at 27 points.

B-Flight (20+): Brian Gabe (20) had the second best score of the day and won his flight with 31 points. Next came the departing Reg Cochrane (24) and Ronnie Ratte (20) who were surprised to be called with 26 points. You just never know!

Best Nine (non-winner): The best half rounds went to Tom Herrington and Walter Baechli.

Lions Club host the Princess Bowling tournament Recently, at the SF Strike Bowl, located on the 6th floor of the Central Festival Pattaya Beach Mall, the Pattaya Lions Club hosted a charity bowling tournament entitled “The Princess Maha Chakri Sirinthorn trophy”.

The event was presided over by the Pattaya Lions Club president,

Khun Kittiporn Wachira Damrongchai, and was attended by a large number of Lions members, bowling enthusiasts and members of the general public.

The annual bowling tournament, now in its fifth consecutive year, was held to raise funds for disadvantaged people to improve their quality of life, as well as promoting healthy exercise and

bringing people in the community together.

Khun Kittiporn Wachira Damrongchai made a presentation and congratulated winners and runners up, in front of the statue of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirinthorn.

Those in attendance also sang for Her Majesty the Queen before the prize giving ceremony took place.

Thai Heart Fund charity cycling event On the 12th of August the Dome Visitsa of Banglamung Municipality was the venue for a fundraising cycling event for the Thai Heart Fund.

The occasion was overseen by Mr. Naris Niramaiwong, the

Banglamung district sheriff and was organized by the Public Health Volunteer Club to raise funds and awareness of the work done by the Thai Heart Fund.

The event was organized according to the government’s policy of encouraging people to exercise more and eat healthily in order to

prevent heart disease and coronary conditions.

The event also commemorates Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s birthday and comes as part of an initiative to improve the environment by reducing pollution, introducing fish into local waterways and planting trees.

SIAM COUNTRY RESORT This week only 1 competition game, because a part of our group played in Kabinbury the PSC Tournament. We were successful there, Dave Smith was the winner of the A-group on the first day and Hidde Bijl won a near pin on the second day.

On Thursday 17th August we went to Treasure Hill. We had nice weather, partly clouded and not too hot. When we arrived it looked like rain, but after a few drops we kept it dry. The course and the greens were in good condition. Looking at the results it is clear that the course is difficult.

It was a thrilling finish between Dave Smith and Willem Lasonder.

Dave was the more consistent player and Willem fell down the last 4 holes after a good front nine. Dave won with 32 stable ford points, beating Willem on the count back. Third was Paddy Devereux with 28 stable ford points.

The near to the pins were for David Smith (twice) and David Lusha.

Thursday 17th August 2017 It was 30 + Golfers in tree buses along with a few cars that hit the Burapha course with enthusiasm.

A good group for the days outing bolstered by Todd’s Touring Party who once again have joined us for a few games of golf! Good to see you guys, one can only hope that you have as much enjoyment as you have in the past. The only thing missing from the day was Ricey!

The course standard was high which is common for this club and the caddies also fall into this category. This scribe thinks that this is an A Grade Course, and all is up to and above standard!

With the numbers we were to play 3 Flights, A Flight saw Paul Kennedy take this out with a tidy 34 points beating Freddie Starbeck on a count back Third in was Aaron Dykes coming in 1 shot behind the winners.

B Flight saw the youngest Todd Brad score the score of the day Brad returned with a very tidy 40

points (Well done mate a great score) Second past the post was Kissy Buchanan edging out Peter Mc Donald via a count back.

C Flight gave Ronald Gillett yet another top of the podium finish, 39 points was enough for Ron to take first position. Second in was Robert Cross one shot behind the leader. With Aaron Shorten filling the third spot on the podium.

Point of interest both Ron and Aaron became duel winners on The Spagoni Day shield, well done guys!

LINKS GOLF SOCIETY On Monday August 21 A fine day in Pattaya had golfers gathering at Links Bar ready to board our two buses. Others had gone direct to the course in cars, for a final total of 23 starters.

In the bus enroute some skeptics scanned the skies and predicted rain later.

Happily, they were wrong, and we had a fine, warm day at Bangpakong Riverside.

This course receives many accolades from golfers after a round here, and rightly so. Once again it was displaying wide, nicely groomed fairways, rough not too rough, although one of our play-

ers thought it was, and the greens are almost the best around at the moment.

The Locker room is big and roomy with modern décor. Perhaps a few more showers would be a good idea.

We had enough players to run two flights, down 3 places, plus the “Best Nines”.

TROPICAL GOLF GROUP Tuesday The 22nd August 2017: Pattana (Stableford) A permanent on our Monthly Schedule, this Course can be a real toughie, however the quality of the Clubhouse there and the friendliness of the staff make it a must on the schedule.

On this day driving up there I was advised by Dick to take the ‘Bouncy Bouncy Road’, as it had now been resurfaced. This road used to be really good until the sheer volume of traffic, especially trucks, turned the road into a nightmare. So onto the road and a great improvement as it was a good drive, just another reason to go to this Course

and in fact Courses like Greenwood, Treasure Hill and Pattavia.

The Course was busy and outside the changing room the buggies were lined up, but thankfully with 3 Nines we were off the C Nine first and the rest were off the B First. So straight off we went. It was hot and windy as we got underway, and truth to be known it only got hotter as we played the C Nine followed by the A Nine.

It got hotter and we soldiered on, the greens were good but the fairways looked like they could be shorter and the rough was really punitive and really difficult to get out of. One of our players asked the Course Official if the mowers

were working. Once in you were in trouble. By the end we were all tired out and really needed a cold shower. Then outside the changing rooms a cold drink and back on the road. Nice and early back at BJ’s.

An early results showed two golfers had 35 points but the winner on countback was Brian Gabe with Mashi in second. In third was Brian Parish with 34 points and in fourth was John Davis with 32 points.

Then for a change we cooled down with a few cold beers.

War Elephants March to Final

Thailand look to defend title in Southeast Asian Games 2017 Thailand’s football team took a huge stride towards repeating their previous success at the Southeast Asian Games on Saturday when they overcame a resolute Myanmar side to reach what is now a record-breaking 20th final in the competition’s history.

The pre-tournament favourites, Thailand, dominated the game and looked to be becoming frustrated by the well organized and defensive minded Burmese. It

was not until a last gasp 94th minute header by captain Chenrop Samphaodi that Thailand could break the deadlock and finally emerge as victors in this enthralling match.

The player’s relief at the final whistle was shared by the thousands in attendance and the millions watching live on TV. Talking of the evenly-contested match, Thailand’s coach Worrawoot Srimaka declared that “it was not their best performance, but they have fought hard to win this for a few officers who had recently passed away”

Talking of Thailand’s improved performance throughout the tournament, Srimaka said he was “happy that they have performed better in every match”.

Thailand had a nervous start to the competition, drawing their first group game against Indonesia 1-1. However, after that early upset, their confidence has continued to grow as they went on to top group B, winning their next 4 group games, including 3-0 drubbings of both local neighbours Cambodia and Vietnam. They will be bolstered in the knowledge that have not con-

ceded a goal since that opening game on the 15th of August and have now scored 10 goals without reply.

Many football pundits will tell you that it’s important for a team to grow during a major competition.

You need look no further for proof of this than reigning world champions Germany, who battled back to salvage an unlikely 2-2 draw against Ghana during a group stage game of the last football world cup in 2014, before composing themselves and going on to be crowned world champions.

Now, all that stands between Thai-

land and their 16th gold medal at the SEA Games is home nation Malaysia who overcame Indonesia 1-0 in Saturday’s other semifinal.

Joint tournament top-scorer and potential golden boot winner Thanabalan headed in a 86th minute winner to book the host’s place in a now eagerly awaited final against the reigning champions Thailand on the 29th of August.

A bronze medal match will also

take place between Indonesia and Myanmar earlier on the Tuesday.

Thailand will be confident ahead of the final match of this year’s competition with plenty of striking options to help them overcome Malaysia. Chenrop, Nattawut and Picha all have 2 goals apiece so far and will be looking to help bring the gold medal home for every Thai person.

For now, the war elephants keep marching on to greatness.

The 2nd ITL Sport, Health and Social Awareness Clinic 2017 is create to help all people have fun while being cultural aware of their heritage, to improve knowledge on sport (sport nutrition and fitness training for health) and learn skills in tennis and beach tennis (tips on various tennis and beach tennis elements from professional coaches and athletes). This event is part of creating social awareness to give equal chances for people from all levels and background of society (to care for all).

Miss & Mrs. India Asia Pacific 2017 Mother’s Day at Nong Nooch

Pattaya grand final underway Recently, in the Octagon Hall of Baan Sukhawadee Pattaya, Mr. Shashi Reddy B. the former president of the Miss India competitions between 2009 and 2010, as well as being the head of the Malaysian, Singaporean and Sri Lankan beauty pageants previously, oversaw the Pattaya grand

final competition.

The event was sponsored by GT Holidays Tour and Travels Co.,Ltd Pattaya,Thailand and GT event management company limited Pattaya ,Thailand. staff were present at the competition which hopes to find competitors who will go through to the next round of the Miss & Mrs. India Asia Pacific

2018 competition.

11 contestants entered the Pattaya final, all aged between 22-45 years of age. The winner will then go through to the next round of the competition which will be held next year in South Africa.

Resort hosts “Mother’s Day Free Trip” At 12pm on the 12th of August, at the butterfly wing activity hall of Nong Nooch Tropical Garden Pattaya, the resorts general manager presided over the opening of the “Mother’s Day Free Trip” promotional event which aims to treat mothers on this special day.

Mr. Napolkit Sodorn, the garden’s PR manager, explained the importance of Mother’s Day in Thailand, where the 12th of August also celebrates the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, who this year turned 85.

Local people and tourists were invited to treat their mothers to a free trip to Nong Nooch Tropical

Gardens this year as a way of expressing their love and appreciation.

Mother’s Day is celebrated in style every year at the resort, which holds activities for the whole family. This year, there were also stage performances, games to be played and prize giveaways.

Cattle-Buffalo ceremony held at Jitapawan College A ceremony was held at Jitapawan College on Mother’s Day this year, during which thousands of cattle and buffalo were released into the wild.

The redemption ceremony involves a blessing for the lives of

the animals in the name of the farmer’s ancestors.

The event comes as part of an initiative first proposed by His Majesty King Rama 9 and aims to allow impoverished farmers to adopt the animals later, in order to allow them to feed the animals and then use them for farming.

The nationwide event is organized by the Meditation Association amongst others and aims to spare the animals from slaughter in order for them to be used in breeding programs to increase their numbers.

Children invited to Kaan Show charity event 2017 Recently, the Kaan Show and the Singha D’Luck theater helped spread some joy to disadvantaged

and disabled children by offering them the opportunity to come and see the fantasy Kaan show live.

The Happiness Begins Kaan Charity event 2017 invited over 1,000

children from 15 charitable organizations to come and enjoy the wonderful world of fantasy that the Kaan show offers.

The manager of the Singha D’Luck

theatre, talking of the free event, explained that “we are so happy to share that value and happiness is to share”.

The world class show took over

3 years to produce and features more than 600 highly trained stage actors and acrobats. The production showcases famous characters from Thai literature

which is sure to put a smile on the faces of the children in attendance.
