InTouch video interview with the President and CEO

AONeuro Transitioning to Global Neuro

On January 1, 2018, AONeuro will transition out of the AO Foundation and create a new, independent organization to focus on neuro care: Global Neuro. What started out as an initiative by the AO Foundation—to expand its activities into the area of cranial neurosurgery—AONeuro has now grown into a fully established educational platform. This shift to an independent entity will enable Global Neuro to grow its commitment to

improving patient care.

The new organization will focus on expanding its neurosurgical capacity building activities through education, quality improvement, research, and technical assistance on a global scale. The organization will also explore opportunities to collaborate on multiple fronts to advance treatment. The AO Foundation will support the transition phase from AONeuro to Global Neuro in its new form. The new organization will be led by a group of key opinion leaders in this field, including Andres Rubiano, Anthony Figaji, Christian Matula, Geoffrey Manley, Ross Bullock, Shelly Timmons, Stephen Lewis, Wai Poon, and Paul Manson.

AONeuro would appreciate hearing from neurosurgeons about their educational needs in the next 2-3 years. Please complete this survey; your feedback and ideas are valuable and will help them to shape the future of their organization. If you complete this short survey by November 30, 2017, you will be automatically entered into a prize draw, the lucky winner of which will receive a place at Global Neuro’s first course in 2018. AO Development Incubator A new call for proposals

The AO Foundation has been innovating for nearly 60 years; the AO Development Incubator (AODI) serves to unleash innovation potential, which contributes to the improvement of outcomes for trauma and musculoskeletal disorders. Building on the success of AODI's first call for proposals earlier this year, we are pleased to announce the next call for innovations that promote excellence in treating trauma and musculoskeletal disorders, is open.

All inventors with a relevant idea are encouraged to apply on the AODI's website. The closing date for this call is November 15, 2017. Innovators with approved proposals will receive support to build and execute their project plans towards a proof of concept and valorization. In partnership, the AO and the inventor will share project development and generated value. “We are delighted to offer funding and support for innovative ideas that

AO Interact Interact on AO's video platform

AO Interact is a unique surgeon-driven platform which provides you with the means to upload, manage and share your educational videos with the wider community. The platform fosters the exchange of knowledge with subject matter experts in their specialty and enhance resident's education.

An innovative commenting system allows for valuable discussions to get an AO community-based peer-review of the uploaded assets. Additional content (like x-rays) is supported. For the community to grow and develop its full potential we depend on you, therefore we would like to invite you to visit and explore the platform at www.aointeract.org today, and add your first video. AOPEER Completes its first face-to-face courses

In September, the AO Foundation’s Program for Education and Excellence in Research (AOPEER) held its first face-to-face Principles in Clinical Research course. The educational program, which helps surgeons to improve their clinical research skills, was hosted in Myanmar by AO Alliance, and in Hong Kong by AOSpine Asia Pacific. The course curriculum was developed by the AOPEER Taskforce, in close collaboration with AO Clinical Investigation and Documentation (AOCID) and the AO Education Institute.

AOPEER has been developed to support surgeons in getting up-to-speed in every aspect of their research. Through AOPEER’s online learning and face-to-face events, interested surgeons can learn how to carry out and publish research through a diverse set of learning resources. AOPEER covers the fundamentals of research, from how to design studies and access grant funding, to how to get organized with study management, data management, and statistics. It also explains how to successfully publish the results. Watch the video to learn more.

Global Spine Congress 2018 Record number of abstracts submitted

Join the 7th Annual Global Spine Congress (GSC) in Singapore from May 2-5, 2018.

The number of abstracts submitted for GSC 2018 has once again exceeded AOSpine's expectations. With 1,100 abstracts received to date, more abstracts have been submitted to the GSC 2018 than any other spine event worldwide. All accepted abstracts will be published in the special online issue of the Global Spine Journal, due to be published prior to the GSC. Read more here about this year's submissions.

The GSC will feature an exciting and unique scientific program with parallel sessions for three full days, covering a wide range of spine related topics. AOSpine members receive a USD 150 discount on the registration fee.

AO Invest Invests in Augmedics

AO Invest, the investment fund for start-ups wholly owned by the AO Foundation, has made a second investment. Its first investment was made in Touch Surgery, an interactive, mobile-first simulation platform that allows surgeons to safely practice surgical procedures. In September, AO Invest announced its investment in Augmedics who have developed the ViZOR System, an AR surgical visualization system designed to give surgeons “X-ray vision” during complex procedures. With the ViZOR, surgeons can see inside a patient’s anatomy through skin and tissue for easier, faster and safer surgeries.
