Money saving 101

The months following the most wonderful (yet most costly) time of year can be a bit hard on all of us – we can help with that. Here we share our tips for thrifty swaps and explain what energy ratings are and how they can help you.

You’ll also find our top picks of the products that’ll be kinder to your wallet and the planet.

5 home hacks to save money in the new year

with Megan Micklewright aka @thesavvy spenderofficial

We caught up with award-winning financial influencer Megan Micklewright, better known as the @thesavvyspenderofficial. Here she shares her top tips for keeping costs low this year.

Stick to those goals

Set clear savings goals for the year ahead, as this will help you focus on what you’re saving up for. Whether it’s that dream holiday, a snazzy new gadget, or an emergency fund, having a target will keep you motivated.

You're on track

Manage your costs with a budgeting app. This will help you pinpoint expenses that may be costing you a little too much, and ensure you’re staying on track towards those goals. You’ll be on a beach before you know it.

It's all about the little things

Cut out unnecessary costs by checking everything is running the way it should be. De-ice the freezer, make sure electricals are working, unplug appliances and chargers that aren’t being used, bleed the radiators, and check windows for draughts.

Save your energy

With bills on the rise, invest in energy-efficient appliances that keep costs low. Look for items with high energy ratings, as these will help you save long-term. It’s also a good time to check you’re with the most competitive energy provider for pricing.

Get your cook on

Planning meals for the week and batch cooking keeps costs down, reduces food waste and saves time. Gadgets like slow cookers and air fryers can make meal prepping even easier.

Check out @thesavvyspenderofficial for more money saving tips and tricks!

Swap 'til you drop

While you might be giving some things up this year (bye-bye chocolate), you don’t need to cut out everything that brings you joy. We’ve come up with simple swaps that’ll reduce your spending and keep those new year blues at bay.

Swap taking out to sitting in

Save 'bucks', sip back and relax with barista-standard coffee at the touch of a button.

Don’t waste your energy...

We break down energy ratings and show how they can help you save money in the long run.

What's all the to-do?

Size matters

As a rule of thumb, C-rated appliances or above will be kinder to your pocket and the planet.

Energy ratings show an appliance’s efficiency and energy usage, helping you work out how much it’ll cost to run –important stuff. The rating system is alphabet-based, meaning appliances with A or A+++ ratings are more efficient and cost less to run. Efficiency decreases as you move down the scale (or alphabet) but, as a rule of thumb, C-rated appliances or above will be kinder to your pocket and the planet.

Same but different

Each label shows appliancespecific information, which will factor into your decision on the right model. Labels for fridges and freezers show their capacity, while those for dishwashers tell you their energy consumption for eco settings per 100 washes, and their noise emission – no one wants a dishwasher louder than the telly.

As well as energy ratings, appliance size is important too. An appliance with a good energy rating may be too big for your needs, and you'll end up using more energy. Smaller appliances will do the same job without eating into your energy as much.

No rating? No problem!

Some appliances don’t have specific energy rating labels. Here are some tips to help you save energy while using these products.

Microwaves

Lower wattage = lower energy.

Computing

Laptops use 85% less electricity over a year than desktops. Tablets use 70% less power than laptops, on average.

Kettles

Avoid overfilling to save £10 a year.

...save it!

Now that you’re an expert on energy ratings, you know how to spot a good’un. Luckily, we do too, so we’ve rounded up some of our favourite energy saving heroes that’ll save your costs this January and beyond.

Tumble dryers are labelled on a different energy rating scale of A+++ to D, with A and above being the most energy efficient

DID YOU KNOW?

They really work!

Little things to make your life a bit easier – we’re all about that. Here you’ll find simple changes you can make around your home that’ll actually make a difference to your spending.

Turn it off-off

You don’t have to start turning off empty plug sockets as part of your bedtime routine, but plugged-in appliances use energy even when you’re not using them. Your TV is in standby mode even when switched ‘off’ and appliances with a clock use energy too. Which? calculates that turning off at the plug could save £20 a year.

Can you feel a draught?

The Energy Saving Trust estimates a saving of up to £80 a year thanks to draughtproofing; by keeping warm air inside, you’ll lower those bills and make things nice and cosy. Proofing is DIY-friendly, with strips easily available for windows and excluders for doors.

Eco to the rescue

‘Don’t eco settings take longer?’ Yes, but because they run at a lower temperature, they’re more energy efficient than shorter programmes. For example, by washing at 30 degrees or lower on an eco cycle, your washing machine will use less water, saving you energy.

Did you know that A rated washing machines only achieve the top energy efficiency when using the Eco Cycle?

While the Eco programme remains the most energyefficient option, Beko’s EnergySpin technology uses innovative drum movements to dissolve detergent more effectively while optimising heat usage, which enhances the efficiency of your washing machine. This delivers up to 35% energy savings across the everyday wash cycles you use most frequently without compromising on performance.

*The energy consumption of Beko EnergySpin programmes are up to 35% less compared to the same capacity Beko washing machines without EnergySpin technology, without compromising washing performance.

Touchdown!

with Vernon Kay

Broadcasting legend Vernon Kay has been an American football fan for 40 years and recently became an ambassador of the AO-sponsored JagTag youth sports programme – which will introduce 87,000 children to a simplified tag-based version of the game in the UK.

Ahead of this year’s Super Bowl on 9th February, we caught up with Vernon to get his top tips on how to host a mega viewing party at home.

QHow did your love for American Football begin?

It all started in 1985; even though we only got half an hour of highlights of the previous week’s games back then, I just got hooked. The energy was amazing and when I joined an American football team called the Manchester All Stars, I loved every second. It’s great to see what AO and Jacksonville Jaguars are doing now with JagTag, because I’d have loved that when I was 13.

QWhat do you think it is about the Super Bowl, in particular, that gives it such a crossover appeal in the UK and makes people who usually have no interest in American football tune in?

You’ve got the best two teams, you've got the razzmatazz, you've got all that stuff that attracted me to the game in the mid-80s; the glitz, the glamour, the halftime show. They make sure every base is covered and there's constant entertainment.

QHow many Super Bowls have you been to in person and are there any particular experiences that stand out?

I’ve been to 14 and one that I’ll always remember was in New Orleans, where we were sat on the 50-yard line and couldn't see because 7'1" Shaquille O'Neal was sat in front of us! Another time, I shared a box with John Travolta, Britney Spears, Mark Wahlberg, and Queen Latifah!

QWhen you can’t make it to the Super Bowl, what are your top tips for creating an amazing Super Bowl party at home?

The game typically starts at 11:30pm so don’t start too early or you’ll probably be asleep by the time things kick off! For those who don’t usually watch American football, my top tip would be to just toss a coin and cheer for one of the teams as it’ll make it more exciting. Having a great TV and sound system is also really important.

QSo, what are your go-to snacks and drinks?

It’s got to be chicken wings and chips in the air fryer - I don’t know why but everything is better in the air fryer! Then I’ll have beef brisket with loads of BBQ sauce and some nachos with all the toppings. I’ll keep some beers on ice as well.

Game night nachos

Crunchy, addictive and quick to make in the air fryer, Vernon’s nachos are the perfect Super Bowl snack.

Here's what you'll need

An air fryer

230g beef mince

1 tsp chilli powder

1/2 tsp cumin

1/2 tsp oregano

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp pepper

400g tortilla chips

(2x sharing bags)

200g cheese

1 large tomato, diced

1/2 a pepper, diced

1 spring onion, sliced

Fresh coriander, chopped

Whatever you like for toppings! Low-effort

Here's how it's done

1 Season the beef with the chilli powder, cumin, oregano, salt, and pepper. Brown it in a large pan over medium heat, then drain and set aside.

2 Line the air fryer basket with greaseproof paper, add half the tortilla chips then layer half the cheese, tomato, pepper and beef. Repeat the layers and air fry at 160°C for 5 minutes.

3 Remove from the air fryer and top with the spring onion, coriander and your favourite toppings – enjoy!

Top tip

Layer the ingredients evenly so the tortilla chips are extra crispy!

with Iwan Carrington aka Mr Carrington

We recently caught up with Iwan, star of BBC's Sort Your Life Out. He shares with us his top tips on DIY, renovation, cleaning, and organisation.

Build a relationship

No renovation goes without a hitch so having a great relationship with your builder will keep things running smoothly. Being ‘on site’ as much as you can is a good idea so any small details can be ironed out straight away. If you can’t be there in person, checking in via video call every morning is a good alternative.

“There’s no hot water!”

Figuring out where to live during the big project is important. You don’t want to be living out of boxes or going without running water for any longer than needed, so deciding how you’re going to make comfort a priority is your first big decision.

Leave a little wiggle room

Find @mistercarrington on Instagram and YouTube

Renovations of any size are expensive and hidden costs and delays are common. Keeping a spreadsheet of your spending can help you stay on track and give a clearer view of how to fund any hiccups.

Kit out your kitchen

Eating your comfort meal after a long day. Hosting friends over a delicious feast. Catching up with the family. The kitchen really is the heart of your home, and if you’re looking to upgrade it this year, these appliances will bring everything together.

Mr Carrington says: Measure for any sockets or pipes that are going to sit behind your new appliance

Mr Carrington says: The gap between your hob and cooker hood should be at least 75cm (65cm for electric hobs). It’s also a good idea to leave a 9cm gap on either side of your hob and cooker hood for ventilation

Hearty and flavourful

Pulled jackfruit burgers

A delicious plant-based twist on a classic favourite.

Serves 4

Here's what you'll need

2x 500g tins of young green jackfruit in water or brine

4 vegan burger buns

100g smoky vegan BBQ sauce

2 tbsp maple syrup

Juice of 1 lime

1 tsp diced red chilli

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp garlic granules

1 tsp hot chilli powder

Salt and pepper to season

60ml apple juice

Vegetable oil to fry

Here's how it's done

1 If your jackfruit is preserved in brine, start by rinsing it in cold water and drying. Cut away the hard, woody centres and break up the flesh with your fingers.

2 In a bowl, mix the jackfruit with the BBQ sauce, maple syrup, lime juice, chilli, and spices, seasoning with salt and pepper.

Tag @ao to show off your tasty creations with us

3 Heat the oil in a large frying pan and fry the jackfruit for 5 minutes. Cook for another 10 minutes, adding the apple juice if the pan gets a little dry, then set aside.

4 Layer the buns with your favourite toppings and add the jackfruit. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Perfect for going vegan this January!

Budget-friendly comfort

Pea and pancetta risotto

Sweet peas and salty pancetta join forces in this delightful dish.

Serves 4

Here's what you'll need

300g Arborio rice

1 litre chicken stock

1 small onion, chopped

1 garlic clove, crushed

65g pancetta, cubed

60g peas

50g grated Parmesan cheese

1 glass white wine (roughly 125ml)

2 tbsp olive oil

Here's how it's done

1 Heat 1 tbsp of olive oil in a non-stick pan and sauté the onion and garlic until translucent. Add the pancetta, cooking for 5 minutes on medium heat. In a separate pan, bring the stock to the boil, then reduce to a simmer.

2 Add the rice and remaining oil to the onions, garlic and pancetta. Keep the rice moving so it doesn’t burn, then add the wine, stirring until absorbed.

3 Add a ladle of stock to the risotto, stirring until the liquid has absorbed, then mix in the peas. Repeat the process of ladling in stock and stirring until absorbed. The rice will be cooked after around 40 minutes – add more stock if it’s a little dry.

Martyn's food waste hacks

Show stems some love

Broccoli and cauliflower are much more than just the florets!

Slice them nice and fine to use in stir-fries, pasta dishes or blanched – wonderful.

Spruce up your salad

Bagged salad is one of the most wasted ingredients. If you’re left with half a bag, wilt it down into soups and stews, blanch it in hot water, refresh it in ice-cold water or chop it through sauces like pesto. You’ll never even know it’s in there.

Buy what you need, not what you think you need

Fresh ingredients can be bought on the day you’re going to eat them. Plans can change so don’t fill the fridge with fresh produce as it can easily be left to gather dust.

The backbone of your kitchen

… is your dry storage! Build up your cupboards with spices, lentils, pulses, sauces, etc. These items have a really long shelf life and having a good supply at all times means you can create something from nothing; then just buy fresh ingredients as and when.

Soups and sauces to the rescue!

If you’ve got lots of ingredients in the fridge, make a big veggie pasta sauce or a hearty soup and freeze it for another day – you’ll thank yourself later.

Here's how it's done

1 For the sauce, fry the onion, celery, carrot, and garlic in a pan until soft. Add the tinned tomatoes and season well, then blitz with a stick blender until smooth.

2 Take the sausage meat out of the skins and mix it with all of the meatball ingredients. Shape into balls then fry them in a hot pan until brown all over.

3 Add the meatballs to a baking dish and pour over the sauce. Top with torn mozzarella and bake in an oven at 200°C for 15 minutes until the cheese melts.

4 Add the basil and serve with pasta, gnocchi or crusty bread – enjoy!

Pull the plug on slow charging

How quickly your phone can go from zero to a hundred depends on the watts coming from the charger cable and the maximum wattage your phone can take.

Watt's the deal?

The type of charger you use plays a big part in fast-charging your devices. AO chargers are designed to deliver more power, making sure your devices charge faster and more efficiently while protecting battery health. Unlike standard chargers, AO chargers support advanced protocols like USB-C power delivery and quick charge, which reduces how long you need to wait until you're back at 100%. We've cracked the perfect balance of speed, safety, and convenience—because your time is too valuable for slow charging.

The average charger ranges from 5W to 20W. To fast-charge an iPhone 12 or later, you need an adapter of 20W or higher.

No socket? No bother

The AO charger cable has a whopping 45W output. It'll rapidly charge 2 devices at once - that's your phone and tablet sorted.

If you've forgotten to charge your phone, a rechargeable power bank is your answer. Milliamp hours (mAh) is a pretty good indication of a power bank’s capability. The higher the number, the more power it can deliver to your phone. Most smartphone batteries have a capacity of around 3000mAh.

With the AO power bank, you won’t be waiting around as it’s a fast charger, meaning you’ll be back to 100% in no time.

It’s got 2 ports, so you can give your friends a helping hand too. Plus, it's airline compliant, meaning you can pop it in your carry-on luggage without any issues. Handy!
