4 | ANZ Championship 2016

WELCOME FROM ANZ CHAMPIONSHIP Welcome to the ninth season of the ANZ Championship. The ANZ Championship continues to set the benchmark as the world’s best netball league. Each year our teams inspire the sporting public and boost the profile of netball to new heights. We are seeing memberships increase, TV and online audiences grow and venues sell-out; all on the back of the fierce rivalries and intense competition that characterises the ANZ Championship. We have worked closely with the teams and broadcast partners to ensure season 2016 is familyfriendly and accessible to current and future fans.

In 2016, weekly Saturday twilight games will be introduced and the Sunday night match in New Zealand has been brought forward to Sunday afternoon. We will also implement the new Official Rules of Netball, released by the International Netball Federation (INF). Our thanks to our Principle Partner, ANZ, and our broadcast partners; SKY Sport in New Zealand and Fox Sports and Network Ten in Australia. As well as, NZME in New Zealand and Telstra in Australia for their continued coverage. We are all looking forward to another exciting season from the world’s best netball league. Thank you for your continued support; I hope you enjoy the 2016 ANZ Championship. Andy Crook General Manager, ANZ Championship, TTNL Ltd.

WELCOME FROM ANZ Welcome to the ANZ Championship – the world’s best netball league. Netball is much more than just a sport to those who play and support the game. It’s also about being part of an inspiring and inclusive community that reaches right across Australia and New Zealand. ANZ has been the Principal Sponsor of the ANZ Championship since its inception in 2008, bringing the finest players from across the Tasman together in a test of friendly sporting rivalry. Our commitment extends to supporting netball at all levels, from the elite to the grassroots, including our sponsorship of the ANZ NetSetGO programme in Australia and the ANZ futureFERNS junior development programme in New Zealand.

Since 2013, we have also provided more than $700,000 in cash grants, equipment and experiences to local netball clubs and teams in both countries. Last year, we saw the introduction of the Challenge Trophy and Conference Final series to the Championship which increased the competition among the teams. In this year’s ninth season, we can expect to see the world’s finest players matched against each other in a series of fast-paced games. On behalf of everyone at ANZ, we wish the players and those involved all the best for what should be a thrilling 2016 ANZ Championship season. CONFERENCE SYSTEM EXPLAINED CONFERENCE

WEEK 3-

In 2015, the ANZ Championship underwent a transformation that saw the league split into two Conferences; Australian Conference and New Zealand Conference.

ANZ Championship Semi-Finals: The winner of each trans-Tasman Semi-Final will earn a spot in the ANZ Championship Grand Final. The Australian and New Zealand Conference Champions will host the ANZ Championship Semi-Finals. The losers of the Conference Finals will be required to travel transTasman to play their Semi-Final against the opposing Conference Champion.

The home and away season remained the same as previous years (each team playing every other team within their Conference both home and away; along with one game against the five Tasman rivals), although the finals underwent changes. It is important to note the standings throughout the season are displayed in Conference ladders, NOT one league ladder. NOTE: Collectively, Week 1 and 2 are known as the Conference Finals. Week 3 and 4 are collectively known as ANZ Championship Finals. WEEK 1Conference Elimination Finals: Second and third place in each Conference will contest the Conference Elimination Final for a spot in the Conference Final. The loser is eliminated. The team that finishes second in their Conference at the end of the regular season will host the Conference Elimination Final. WEEK 2Conference Finals: First place in each Conference and the winner of the Conference Elimination Final will contest the Conference Final to be named Conference Champions. Neither team is eliminated. The team that finishes on top of their Conference at the end of the regular season will host the Conference Finals and have a rest week during the Conference Elimination Final.

16 | ANZ Championship 2016

WEEK 4ANZ Championship Grand Final: The pinnacle event of the ANZ Championship season played between the winner of both Semi-Finals. The host of the Grand Final will be determined by two scenarios – if the Grand Final is taking place between two teams of the same Conference, the Conference Champion hosts the Grand Final. If the Grand Final is taking place between teams from each Conference, the host will be determined by the team that accumulated the most points during the regular season.

CHALLENGE TROPHY The introduction of the Challenge Trophy in 2015 provided an additional incentive for some clubs to win at home. The trophy began in Perth, with the Fever successfully defending it five times before the Firebirds took the trophy to Queensland in Round 10. The trophy will be up for grabs every time the holder plays at home, beginning in Queensland in 2016. Once a visiting team defeats the trophy holders, it’s theirs to defend against all challengers in every home game during the ANZ Championship regular season. CURRENT CHALLENGE TROPHY HOLDERS, THE QUEENSLAND FIREBIRDS
