Conron Stockcrete is a family owned business priding itself on its quality Australian made concrete stock watering troughs, with an innovative design resulting from extensive experience in water supply services and livestock. Based in rural NSW at Greenethorpe, they have water troughs to suit any animal production system. Owned by husband and wife Rachel and Joel Conron the business has always been a means to enable a move back to the family farm and still have a strong off-farm income that would enable them to set up a larger farming enterprise over the next 5 years. They have 3 children under 6 and Rachel works 3 days/week looking after the marketing and administration.

The business grew from an idea in 2014, to a part time business (Joel was still working as a plumber) in 2015 and then, to full time in March 2016 when the move was made back to the family farm. Joel is a qualified plumber and had always believed that he could create an industry leading design and manufacturing method for water troughs that could possibly lead the market.

When coaching began in March 2017 the business was operating out of a borrowed family shed at Braidwood with five moulds and the YTD sales were $120,000 / year. Sales were patchy and inconsistent.

Joel looked after production, sales and delivery while Rachel spent a little time on invoicing and admin alongside managing 3 children under 5.

The Issues 1. Self belief.

2. Cashflow (didn’t have the belief that a bank would allow them to have an overdraft to sustain the business.)

3. A need to manufacture multiple moulds and have the space and facilities at the family farm for high volume production.

4. Recruitment, management and review of staff were a challenge.

his mindset. He needed to build his confidence and believe that if they continued marketing the products and business, sales would grow and enable them to get the cash flow to build the shed and renovate the farm house and then the family could all be together.

As the move date was confirmed and shed construction commenced sales did continue to grow and staff were employed and trained for the production.

The second mindset stretch was that it was OK to borrow money for the business and get him to believe that ‘the bank’ would say yes as cash was needed to support the growing debtor balance.

2. New Facility The move of the production facility to a new purpose built facitily went smoothly. It occurred in late April. This was a huge load off Rachel and Joel’s mind.

3. Improving the Recruitment Process The belief system around ‘finding the right staff’ in a small regional centre needed some work. The learning around creating a system to recruit, employing the right people and holding them accountable to targets have now resulted in a great team. Joel is no longer required in the shed at all.

4. Systemisation of the Sales Process The complete swap from a production to a sales / delivery role by Joel has enabled the systemisation of the sales process. Sales are growing because of this and are continuing to increase. Major orders with a government authority are continuing to supplement growing orders from both retail and account clients.

Production in recent months is approaching 135 which is close to capacity of the current shed. The quality of the troughs continues to improve as the team continues to finetune the process way past what was expected.

5. Marketing - Knowing What Works The marketing plan is constantly being refined and a major revamp of the website is about to be delivered.

The measuring and testing of all marketing means that all future marketing funds will be used on what they know will work.

Key Changes / Actions Get Clear on the 12 Month and 90 Day Plans - Work on Joel’s belief system around business risk and debt - Move the business (including fund and build the production shed) - Renovate the farm home and move in - Employ two production staff to release Joel from the shed - Increase production to 135 troughs per month - Create the 10x10 marketing plan and implement

Outcome

- sales have increased from $10,000 / month to $95,000 / month in just 1 year - 3 full time production workers

Future Strategy - Purchase a larger truck and trailer to improve delivery options and service.

- Increase the range of products.

- Double the current production facility and sales in the business.

- Build an admin and sales office onto the production shed.

- Establish and pursue licensing agreements for future residual income - Purchase surrounding farmland for cropping/ livestock enterprise.

The Outcome The business move, and family home renovation were completed by the end of April and Rachel Joel and children are now living and working at the family home at Greenethorpe which was the big first 90 day goal. The business has quickly grown to now employ 3 full time production workers and is way beyond what Rachel and Joel thought was possible in such a short

time. Productivity continues to grow and they are now able to produce more than 135 units per month.

Employees now operate the production side of the business and Rachel and Joel are rapidly increasing sales and will achieve the $1.2m turnover goal for 2017/18 financial year.

1. Listen to Audiobooks

This has to be the most leveraged way to learn. You can do this whilst driving or exercising. The aim is to listen to a few books on a certain subject matter so that you can form your own opinions. Without knowledge you will struggle to be a great coach.

2. Be consistent

Most people simply justify why they are not disciplined. To get ahead in life we must be consistent in what is important to us.

3. Simplify

Understand what you are good at and focus on mastering this space. Outsource the rest. As I like to say, I’m crap at 99.9% of things but I know what my 0.1% … play to your strengths.

4. Work with Intensity

When you need to work hard then that’s what needs to happen. Don’t waste time where you are in work mode. Block out distractions and “time thieves”.

Otherwise you will miss out on valuable time with your loved ones.

5. Correct Intentions

Make sure your intentions are in the right place.

People know when you are being genuine and have their best interest at heart. Just because they are too polite to call “bullshit”, doesn’t mean they are not thinking it.

Top 30 by Banked $’s March The monthly banking’s for March has been the best month on record going back to 2015! Congratulations on a team effort in fact an amazing period of growth for the last quarter. The average banking for January was $23,130. February $25,840 and March $27.852. We had terrific growth from Suzzanne Laidlaw, Brad Flynn, Mandy Walker and new coach Tony Trent who has burst into the top 30 in his first month of coaching!

Last month Paul Henshall put out the challenge to Bruce Campbell that Christine Beard was biting at his heels.

Where are you located? Based in Bendigo - my goal is to work with regional Victorian towns such as Horsham, Swan Hill, Bendigo, Echuca, and all spaces in between.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently? I zipped my undies into my pants a while ago and had to be cut out of them by some colleagues - which, as you can imagine involved them getting quite up close with me... I couldn’t stop laughing for days.

Tell us about your career to date? I was a healthcare leadership coach in the Public Sector, post a long career in palliative care nursing. I have always wanted to help and support people, to be the best version of themselves that they can be - communication & education have been my strengths. Prior to that I worked in many different roles - Australian Wheat Board, Bartending, Rouse abouting in shearing sheds and marking lambs, fruit picking - I have tried my hand at many things - I love to try ANYTHING new!

What made you decide to become a business coach at ActionCOACH? I was encouraged by my coach, Paul Henshall, to become a coach - apparently I was already doing much of what was needed, so it was a natural fit……. the reason I said yes was because I knew I was entering into a supportive environment after going to BEF last year.

In the middle of last year, after a Jiu-jitsu class, a chance discussion with my coach got me on to ActionCOACH. After doing some research and consuming a good number of Youtube videos, I scheduled a call with Mr Paul Henshall. The rest, as they say, is history.

I spent 5 years at University of Canterbury where I completed undergraduate degrees in commerce (Marketing) and science (Psychology).

Last week my daughter proudly called me a ‘man’ because I had a ‘peanut’...I think she meant a...... haha!

My working career to date has centered around marketing roles in a wide range of industries: Printing, industrial electronics, construction, and luxury vehicles.

What made you decide to become a business coach at ActionCOACH? Even as a teenager I remember having a deep desire to run my own business. The problem was I never knew what I would actually offer. My journey through employment was always punctuated by an underlying sense of dissatisfaction and a never-ending search for my vocational calling.
