NGOs but also by all parties and especially the private sector. IRDA can make the statement but we will need everyone’s support and commitment to make it work. What is important in all that when we work together, we can achieve tremendous results, which people, and indeed the world, will notice and consequently we will see greater achievements that would not only benefit Iskandar Malaysia but also your organisation and your country as well.
A Low Carbon Society for Iskandar Malaysia Project Before I end my paper, I would like to inform you of a major piece of work that we have already started; working together with Prof. Ho of UTM Skudai, Prof. Matsuoka of Kyoto University and Dr. Fujino of the National Institute for Environmental Studies. The Low Carbon Society Scenario Project for Iskandar Malaysia will be carried out by University Technology Malaysia, in collaboration with Kyoto University and the National Institute of Environmental Studies of Japan. The main purpose of this 5-year JICA/JST-funded study/project is to see how Iskandar Malaysia can become a low carbon society by 2025. With the necessary preparation work already carried out by the respective research institutions and by IRDA, this study will point to our commitment to ensuring that Iskandar Malaysia will indeed be developed as a sustainable international metropolis.
Final Remarks Finally, I sincerely hope that through this World Town Planning Day Conference, my Team from IRDA will gain much valuable insight into how Iskandar Malaysia’s land use, social, economic and environmental developments are being planned and carried out in policy and on the ground. We can learn a lot from each other and through working together, I am confident that we can transform this region in a sustainable way. It is truly an honour for me to be standing here and being part of this important Symposium. Thank you again for your interest, your support and your on-going commitment in Iskandar Malaysia. I very much hope that you will be part of transforming this region into a metropolis of international standing, which we can all be proud of. Thank you!
