2nd semester Graduate Studio project

The ’’UrbanWeave’’ project is a community-focused development in Southside Chicago that aims to promote social cohesion, environmental sustainability, and a sense of belonging among users. The project includes co-housing units, mixed-use community spaces, and shared spaces that aims to foster a vibrant and interconnected neighborhood. By replicating the existing urban fabric, the new development can seamlessly blend in with its surroundings while adding a touch of modernity. This new development creates a new but, familiar urban fabric, weaving the grains and green pockets together. The green pockets, whether they are small public or private parks or simple landscaping features, can provide a much-needed respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. The shared spaces transition from public- semi private- public spaces with visual transparency, which are characterised by the green pockets and are demarcated through design components.

The design of the Urban Weave is inspired by the idea of weaving together different elements of the urbanscape to create a strong and interconnected fabric.

The co-housing units are designed to be affordable and accessible. They will be available to families and individuals of different income levels, ages, and cultural backgrounds. Each co-housing unit is self-contained, with its own kitchen, living room, and private bedrooms. However, the units will be clustered around shared spaces, including community kitchens, gardens, and outdoor areas that encourage interaction and collaboration.

1st semester Graduate Studio project

Old Montreal, a historic neighborhood, is known for Place Jacques-Cartier - a square or plaza important to the neighborhood. It is considered the heart of Old Montreal by locals and is a place that encourages art, performances and provides entertainment to the public. Our intention behind this design is for the museum to act as a ‘public plaza’. A plaza is a major part of a community catering to all ages and open for all. It is a space that encourages conversation whether it be casual or formal and information exchange and social activity. Old Montreal, a historic neighborhood, is known for Place Jacques-Cartier - a square or plaza important to the neighborhood. It is considered the heart of Old Montreal by locals and is a place that encourages art, performances and provides entertainment to the public. It is the absence of boundaries that makes a plaza special and this is what is replicated in the design of PHI Contemporary. The museum will serve as one single entity avoiding disconnect and detached spaces.

Our vision was to portray the museum in such a way that it is synonymous with a public plaza. This project will be an ode to the important historical landmark Place Jacques - Cartier and to the heritage of Old Montreal.

Our mission is that the space should maintain the character of Old Montreal through materiality and construction systems. It should create an experience for the people which also activates their senses and mind. It should promote culture through discourse among people and encourage the exchange of ideas and perspectives. It is inclusive of everyone and all age groups aligning with PHI’s vision and mission.

The entryway leads into the grand atrium which acts like the public plaza. It serves as a gathering space encouraging interaction. The staircase is the focal point and leads to the mezzanine floor. The first floor consists of the lobby and the curated galleries. The mezzaine floor overlooks the first floor and consists of the cafe space.

The office spaces above and the cafe areas also have minimal boundaries to bring every individual together including visitors, guests, staff and artists. Visual connectivity has been highly prioritized in this design to create acohesive design for the museum space. Subtle colours ahve been used to emphasize the artwork in the museum.

03 TENTACULAR TALES

LOCATION: NORTH LAWNDALE| 2024

Contribution to the team: Pre Design studies, Case studies, site studies and analysis, Cultural understandings, zoning and contextual study, 3D Modelling of Design, Conceptual ideas for the museum, Design process and interventions, visual graphics and presentation

4th semester Graduate Studio project

Tentacular Tales positions a series of architectural “ribbons” to organize a children’s discovery center around sensory, imaginative, and gross motor play areas. By breaking down the institution into three anchor pavilions and connecting them with ribbons, the project generates a new interface for the community to connect and engage, transforming the discovery center into a social infrastructure that encourages people to utilize local assets to learn, grow, and develop a support network.

In a neighborhood like North Lawndale, this community involved project transforms the traditional idea of a children’s museum into a vibrant, inclusive space that not only nurtures young minds but also supports the entire community’s growth. Through its imaginative ribboninspired design, the center becomes a beacon of creativity, connection, and opportunity, helping to foster a more resilient and thriving North Lawndale for generations to come.

This project brings the community together through the four ribbons, which extend beyond the museum walls and spill into the surrounding neighborhood, becoming bold supergraphics that unify the entire area. By visually and physically connecting different parts of the community, the ribbons create a cohesive and welcoming environment, fostering a sense of belonging and interaction.

The museum will collaborate closely with the ‘Farm on Ogden’, located across the road, to integrate agricultural education and local business support. Through the ‘G ribbon’, the museum will grow plants and vegetables that local vendors can sell directly within the museum, creating a sustainable revenue stream for the community. These vendors will also lead workshops where children can learn about planting, growing, and harvesting, providing valuable hands-on experience in agriculture.

The Design is adorned with educative ribbons which instills one’s mind with curiosity:

“I ribbon” (Imagination): The “I ribbon” invites children to explore their creativity through playful, abstract forms that twist and turn throughout the space.

“O ribbon” (Onward): The “O ribbon” focuses on gross motor development, taking the shape of a tube that children can crawl, stand, and walk through. It offers physical challenges in a safe, engaging environment.

“C ribbon” (Community): The “C ribbon” acts as a bridge between the neighborhood and the museum, inviting residents to experience the space daily as they walk through. It fosters connectivity and inclusiveness, making the museum a part of the community’s everyday life.

“G ribbon” (Grow): The “G ribbon” ties into the Farm on Ogden initiative, offering spaces for local vendors to hold stalls and workshops. It provides a hands-on learning environment where children can engage with agriculture and sustainability, while supporting local entrepreneurship.

View- Proposed redesign of Abhyudoy Housing complex

Contextual

03 ABHYUDOY HOUSING SOCIETY

LOCATION: KOLKATA, INDIA| 2021

4th year Thesis project

Kolkata is a city that upholds a perfect juxtaposition between the old world and the modern one. A city of significant importance to the British Empire since it was the capital of British India for almost 150 years. One stumbles across a lot of British architecture almost everywhere in the city such as Raj Bhavan, Metcalfe Hall and National Library.

Owing to its rich history and culture, there has been a large influx of people into the city which has led to a great deal of urbanisation. Due to this urbanisation, private residential complexes, which were a foreign concept in this city till 35 years ago, are taking over.

Cooperative complexes, a type of private residential complex, were a new concept in the late 90s owing to the increasing population density. These complexes contain lowrise apartment blocks for people to live together in a gated community. They require redevelopment due to outdated structural systems, services and design strategies. Redevelopment would also be beneficial for the existing residents who choose not to venture out to new Highrise complexes.

Abhyudoy co-operative society is a complex in Kolkata and is my childhood home which was inaugurated during the late 90s. It is located at Anandapur, which is a junction presently famous for its proximity to hospitals, two good schools, a mall as well as a luxury hotel. Presently, a new metro line is also being constructed near the area. It was built in 1996 and offers apartments of 3bhk. There are 432 flats. It has 2 huge playgrounds, along with 27 blocks - 4 storeys each.

The proposed design would add 68 more apartments than originally planned, bringing it to a total of 500 apartments. The revenue generated from selling these extra apartments would be distributed among existing residents as a compensation for vacating their homes during the redevelopment process.

It is important to design the space meticulously as the project is home to more than 400 families and countless more stories and memories of great emotional value.

The residents want to stay in their community and not migrate out. Hence, the design aims to create a cohesive space which connects the people with the public realm and increases engagement within the society.

PROBLEMS

Requirement of cars have grown since 1995 leading to pathways being converted into parking zones.

Poor sanitary conditions as there are open drains running throughout the society which have increased the risk of diseases.

There are no landscaping areas in the complex hence engagement among the residents is currently negligible.

Backyard spaces are not utilised as engagingpockets but are being converted into parking spaces due to its shortage.

Redevelopment increases standards of living while keeping the feeling of home for the residents. In a metropolitan city like Kolkata instead of creating transport corridors and extending cities, this project would be redeveloping the existing homes. It would make it easier for the people since they wouldn’t have to travel into the city for work purposes. They would remain in the core of the city.

Redevelopment of existing homes would have a larger impact on the residents and the complex’s future than simply displacing the residents.

MODULES

CREATING TRANSPORT CORRIDORS IN CITIES

3 bhk Apartment 4 bhk Apartment 2 bhk Apartment 2 bhk Apartment

Multiple typologies of apartment modules enhances principles such as social inclusion which breaks discrimination and creates more engagement among the poeple of the complex. Hence, each floor has apartments of multiple typologies.

The character and context of the place has been maintained to make the residents retain their sense of belonging.

The built structures have been used to create a natural boundary to bring in more engagement throughout the complex. Integrated zones have been incorporated to enhance coexistence and bring back the original concept of a housing society in India.

Hospitals are large public buildings that have a significant impact on the environment and economy. Since hospitals have such high demands on community resources they are natural candidates for sustainable design.

Hospital patients are often fearful and these feelings may impede recovery. Every effort should be made to make the hospital stay as unthreatening, comfortable, and stress-free as possible.

It is important to create an efficient space that may be shared by adjacent functional areas, and by making prudent use of multipurpose spaces.

The architectural strategy of the project is to create a space using legible strategies and biophilia to create a healing environment. This project focuses on maximising day lighting and natural ventilation through courtyards and roof gardens in order to improve therapeutic outcomes, patient and staff satisfaction and operational effectiveness.

Since hospitals are complex functional spaces, it is imperative to make a space which is stress free, unique and create a space that enhances healthy experiences rather than just creating a space that contains health.

Central circulation has been created in each department and the hospital as a whole.

The masterplan shows the separate access points of Emergency, OPD and services. It also shows separate ambulance parking and landscaping zones.

The Atrium is the merging point of activities. In this hospital the courtyard enhances visual connectivity between all the floors, brings in a biophilic approach to the design and caters to the hot and humid climate of Brahmavara in Karnataka.

CENTRAL VISTA

05 CENTRAL VISTA

LOCATION: DELHI, INDIA| 2020

TEAM:

4th year Urban studio project

Contribution to the team: Initial studies, research and case studies of the Central Vista were done as a group after which, each team member selected separate zones of the urban area and redesigned it.

Delhi is a city that has always risen from the ashes . It has a special identity and character, a city which was built, destroyed and rebuilt several times due to the multiple invasions.

Creating an existing sensitive urban zone such as Central Vista in Delhi is different from creating a determined urban area. These spaces are a result of evolution and thus, have to be designed meticulously.

Central Vista stands to be the identity of the city. It is where all the administrative buildings are present along with the Parliament House, Rashtrapati Bhavan (Official Residence of the President) , Central Secretariat and the India Gate. The entire stretch was Designed By Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens. His design has a diagonal road pattern with trees in double rows on either side along with a large triangular and hexagonal pattern with a square placed in front of the Raisina Hill. This historic landmark is characterised by symmetry, clean predictable geometry, cross roads at 90 degrees and glory.

We wanted to create a space that would retain the original grandeur of Lutyen’s Central Vista while being more accessible and experiential for the people - ‘A walking museum’. We wanted to create a cohesive space that would engage the people with the site. The aim of this design was to create a ‘People’s Central Vista’.

The vision was to create a space which would promote culture and user inclusivity. Apart from this, the aim was also to create a place which would stimulate characteristics of Delhi through smell, sound, vision and bring out the identity of the space. For example, the food stalls in the kiosks and dance performances in the plaza.

Segregated spaces have been created to ease navigation and legibility. It being in front of the India Gate, the people would be encouraged to move towards the western side of the Central Vista. Hence, maximising movement in the entire Central Vista and within the space. This space can hold temporary Indian carnivals that are held during the onset of different seasons along with bringing in people during all times of the day for recreational purposes.

The central space acts as a stimulating space to move towards the western half of the central vista. The public plaza has been designed by retaining the original ideology of symmetry of the Central Vista. The space would be utilised for the multiple carnivals that take place during the year and the segregated spaces would reduce the conflict zones on the roads.

It would act as a multi purpose area which would generate activities throughout the day. For example, people can use this as a park for exercising and cycling or a space for social gathering.

The central space would be used for performances, which would be visible from all areas of the plaza, and also cater to multiple activities throughout the day simultaneously.

06 ANAND VIHAR RAILWAY STATION

LOCATION: DELHI, INDIA| 2019

3rd Year Studio project

Contribution to the team: Pre-design studies, site visit, site study, analysis of site, analysis on context of the site and the city of Delhi, activity mapping, conceptual ideas for redevelopment, case studies, design approaches, sketches, drafting plans, sections, elevations of the railway.

This project was a competition as well as a studio project. The competition- Transparence 14.0 was initiated by Ethos. The project aimed to redevelop Anand Vihar Railway station of Delhi to a Railport (Railway + Airport). A railway with all the advancements and innovations like an airport (a future ready railway). The site was divided into 3 parcels, and only parcel 1 and parcel 2 were supposed to be redesigned. Parcel 1 being open space, parcel 2 being the platforms and station .

We wanted to create a design which would reflect the character of the capital city of Delhi. The design would showcase the diversity of Indian culture and the architectural styles that evolved in Delhi.

The architectural strategy was to recreate the chaos of the station and Delhi in a reorganised way and produce a structure that speaks to the passengers by making the circulation of the station methodical, and gives them an essence of the city by using Delhi’s architectural characteristics. For example- the Indo-Islamic dome, geometric patterns and symmetrical plans.

With the cultural identity of Delhi fading away with modernisation, this design aimed to bring back the identity of Delhi while making the station a cultural icon.

The site plan shows 2 parcels redesigned. The commercial zoone follows the char bagh concept. Involves buildings divided equally and stacked and then stacked on each other .

A direct connection has been made from the flyover just for the station which would link them directly to the station’s first floor.

The entire campus is linked with a roadway with separate drop locations for each junction. All spaces have been segregated for smooth movement.

Roof

The design aims to direct smooth passenger movement between the station, commercial zone and platforms. A direct ramp connects all the floors with the platform and a central area under the dome that merges the activities of the space. Circulation was made easy by analysing the chronology of activities of the passengers and staff.

Certain new additions that were added were baggage carousels in the cloakroom for baggage claim, vending ticket machines for passengers and separate spaces for vendors.

The central dome pays homage to the indo-islamic architecture prevelant in Delhi.

07 DOMESTICATION IN PUBLIC SPACES

LOCATION: MUMBAI, INDIA| 2019

TEAM: ANUSNA ROY AND ARYA DHANDA

Contribution to the team: Going for site studies with teammate, trial runs on site, analysis of sites, graphical and cartographic representation, drawings, understanding how to represent our interpretation of insurgence in a public space.

SITE: DADAR STATION AND DADAR MARKET, MUMBAI

The summer school was an initiative by Centre of Environmental Planning and Technology, Ahmedabad and was led by Kruti Shah and Sebastian Trujillo. It focused on understanding insurgent activities in public spaces.

We had started our journey in Mumbai (India), a city that never sleeps.. We took the train at Dadar station from Churchgate station to Vasai Road station at different times of the day to understand the different activities. Seeing how life doesn’t pause in a city like Mumbai, the trains keep taking circles along with the people living in the city trying to draw out the little time they can get for themselves. We interpreted insurgence as domestication and analysed the paradox of domesticating a public space. The people had different ways of making themselves feel at ease.

Our main analysis revolved around the understanding that people perform different activities and those activities showed insurgence by ‘personalising’ a public space. The circle of life clearly shows in the people, and how a public space becomes ‘private’ for a person.

REPRESENTATION: We represented it by showing the activities on a schematic plan and sketches of the surroundings and the people.
