PERSONAL STATEMENT The portfolio is a compilation of selected projects I have worked on during my Undergraduate Architecture study.It also includes examples of work executed during my internship.

These projects are arranged in a chronological order so as to highlight my progression across five years.It is an attempt to display an array of skills acquired, particularly ideation and hand drawings.The concepts chosen are an exploration of the relationship between Man and nature,Form and technology,Living and Behaviour.Various factors like scale,form,organisation,graphics,research,user profile and craftsmanship are highlighted in coherence with the master’s program.

Since I believe in the interdependencies and collaboration of design and other art forms,I have also included a section of study tours and other creative pursuits.

All the samples of work exhibit a storyboard by initially setting the scene with why and what matters,taking us through a process of problem solving and providing suitable solutions through design development.Design always begins with a question followed by a whole process of finding solutions,such is my approach.

I always look forward to push boundaries in terms of concepts,materials and techniques.I want to further explore this transformative nature of design through this graduate study.

People and communities use stories to understand the world and our place in it. These stories are embedded with power - the power to explain and justify the status quo as well as the power to make change imaginable and urgent. A narrative analysis of power encourages us to ask: Which stories define cultural norms? Where did these stories come from? Whose stories were ignored or erased to create these norms? And, most urgently, what new stories can we tell to help create the world we desire?

- The site is located in the heart of a commercial zone,in the central part of the city.

- It is also sorrounded by various public buildings and media centres at a distance of 0.5 km.

- Famous bookstores are also located in this area.

- The nearest metro line has a great influence on the location of the site bringing in more people by convenience.

L A C K O F: Form Thus, media hub could cater to a media novice, to an expert who seeks various media modes and methods for production to expression located in close proximity to facilitate ease of access to all of them,collaboration,saving time,space and efficient in logistics as well.

-Benefit of the consumers,businesses and stakeholders.

Design intervention is based on the concept of using 8 units of 600 sqm area which are self sufficient and architecturally treated differently arranged along the lines of the site factors.Each unit houses all media modes providing services, thus these units can also be detached and can function individually at various locations in conjunction with existing media centres facilitating collaboration and providing additional space.

These units are stacked above one another in a staggered fashion with shifting planes and facades thus covering larger site area and connecting the two streets on either side.

Semi-open workshops

To understand the need for creating architecture as an envelope to system dependent programme, the use of technologies developed in other fields as a precursor to creating architecture, and the role of symbolic,aesthetic and imagery in influencing architecture.

Entrance Model - Exposed concrete triangular panels cast on site and are assembled on a 3 dimensional steel framework.

- Some units replace concrete with glass for light and ventilation.The roof is also punctured with skylights.

- The steel framework extends in some areas as pergolas giving shade.

THE SITE CONSIDERED IS

- Site is located on the outskirts of the city.

Most of the material was outsourced for the International Airport construction.

- Extensive quarrying led to squatter settlements in the vicinity.

- Abandoned - Distinct variation in materials and scale on site telling us a story from ecological disaster to spontaneous succession seeping through the quarry top soil.

Pergola supported by the retaining structure on the quarry face.Open teaching spaces.

After studying the water patterns,the run off is stored within the building,treated and then flown into the lake.Water from the pits are also pumped and treated. The research and information center is located here, further creating awareness and studying various ecosystems.

Design intervention is further detailing the research and information centre which behaves as a retaining structure with a bund constructed before the building holding water within the structure from the surface run-off.When the bund overflows ,the sluice gate opens and water is then directed to flow through exposed water channels into the building through gravity creating waterfalls at different levels.

The people thus experience the built and unbuilt blurring the threshold creating awareness and reminding the visitors about the sorrounding nature and it’s importance.

Easily accessible during unloading of goods.

When water overflows in the bund,the sluice gate opens,water flows into the building through exposed water channels.

The study rooms and the library are located in the lower levels away from the busy pathway at the entry level.

Architecture does not necessarily impose itself on nature but can act as a supporting structure and co-exist with the environment.These abused lands should not be ignored,instead made centers of ecological awareness.

Tunnel I-bar entry The logo inspired tunnel brings in a duality to the way the store is accessed.Thus, regular customers can visit the customer care directly by entering the I-bar side entrance.

In addition to the existing blue theme,a palette of warm colors help create a mid-century modern look in the interiors.Brown tinge Bison board is used on the walls with wood work for the panelling and furniture.Marble textured tiles for the floor.

Toilet Module:Standard optimum measurements

In 2017,according to statistical reports,524 million or 40% of the total population practise open defecation.

Major challenges remain: Lack of a toilet If present,to get people to use them!

-Lack of awareness, -Lack of behavior change, -Social norms.

The current experience of open defecation would therefore be a good place to start understanding the design of a good toilet.

Vanity

A toilet module that is functionally flexible.It can be used in homes and as a public toilet .The design confirms to simple layout which consists of a bath,an Indian lavatory and a vanity.Each of these spaces are linked in a way that one activity does not effect the other i.e. The module can be used as a public toilet if the bath is closed.Thus,this module can be functionally detached but yet connected by a common vanity.

Locally available materials Often missed in currently designed public toilets,aesthetics is maintained using rustic materials.

Water tank In built easy to access.

Based on extensive ethnographic research by wateraid India across various states, An open defecation spot is, far and green thus private and not obnoxious near enough to be convenient and safe.

Shifting imaginations of the old and the new

THE ABSENCE OF AN ADEQUATE ONGOING DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE PAST AND THE PRESENT HAS AN OVERWHELMING IMPACT ON THE WAY THE INHABITANTS OF BENGALURU AND HENCE OTHERS IMAGINE THE CITY.BENGALURU HAS DEVELOPED A TENDENCY TO INTERPRET THE PAST NOT ONLY IN TERMS OF THE PRESENT BUT ALSO ALMOST SOLELY FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE DOMINANT GROUPS OF THE PRESENT. THIS PROJECT IS AN ANALYSIS OF THE TRANSITION BETWEEN THE COLONIAL AND POSTCOLONIAL PERIODS, USING THE BUNGALOW AS A PHENOMENON, WOULD PROVIDE AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY TO INVESTIGATE A NUMBER OF QUESTIONS REGARDING THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND IT’S RELATION TO THE SOCIETY. S I T E The site chosen is the White field Inner circle which was one of South India's prominent Anglo Indian settlements with the bungalows being an evident phenomenon. But today the future of the settlement appears grim due to later commercial and residential developments.

Framing some of the main issues due to later developments: -The Bungalows are under immediate threat due to their large footprint and proximity to the international tech park.

-The circular layout is still evident although there is a proposal afoot to develop the central open area into commercial and residential interventions.

-The existing church may be lost due to road widening.

-The authorities,general public continue to be unaware of this chapter of India’s colonial heritage.

-No heritage legislation in the city.

The site is largely a residential area with a commercial edge along the main road and a central park.Other important roads are the Inner circle road and the Outer circle road.Important heritage buildings present are the Church,Club and Waverly Inn.

T H U S, This program will cater to: -Researchers,to understand and study about the community and culture, -Tourists, who will experience the forgotten history of Bangalore and discover the Anglo Indian legacy, -Residents, who will use the redeveloped club and the church, -Parish, who will be housed at the newly developed seminary.

Reconstructing the fabric by referencing back to the origin, evoking the spirit of the old .How much of the old can be new?

D E R I V A T I O N S

The idea is to retrace this forgotten but important part of history in the midst of white field’s busy IT culture. A design intervention that would take people on a journey through various events in time giving them an essence of the Anglo Indian culture and the city ’s history and creating a new edgethe church by the Whitefield main road thus becoming a new public front for Whitefield, through a modern interpretation of the colonial architecture.

The circulation pattern in a bungalow is followed in the design. A hierarchy of spaces from informal to private spaces is seen.

Strong Geometry tracing back to the origin In a similar way,informal spaces in the design like workshops and lobby are placed in the front followed by semi public to the most public church.The most private spaces like the research and seminary are placed at the back.

The chosen site consists of an existing community memorial church which is the public focal point of the intervention.Other exiting building include a well preserved colonial bungalow and a community club.Thus, the concept proposes to weave the old buildings with new interventions that cater to the needs of the locals.Efforts are taken to preserve the central circular park by spilling various functions in the green area.The design is held by a spine, a monolithic structural wall that changes it’s form and function along the length of the design.

USER A C T I V I T I E S: The plan was conceived as a radial enclosure, subdivided to create a hierarchy of three courtyards.

Thus, making the design inward looking as opposed to the outward looking bungalow.

Varying Volumes in Massing that cascade down towards the church.

Conceptual Section This section shows that the church is given importance with the massing that cascades down towards the church.Thus, emphasis is given to the church.

Conceptual Plan The site chosen weaves the heritage buildings and built fabric with the new by drawing radial lines from it’s origin point.

There exists a strong geometry on the site.Walls extending radially forms the main spine of the design.These walls are exposed concrete shear walls which form the main structure of the built fabric.Thus, this radial grid weaves the existing structures with the built fabric.The main spine is a monolithic structure changing it’s form and function along the length of the design.

C I R C U L A T I O N The people enter the building into the lobby where they get a glimse of the church.The circulation branches out into two main walkways.From here, they are guided by radial walls which form a hierarchy of courtyards leading into various spaces.The building can be accessed from the inner circle road and from the whitefield main road on the opposite side.The entry to the private spaces are kept separate from the public circulation thus emphasizing on the hierarchy as seen in the bungalows.Buffer zones are provided in between to blend the private and public.

Existing Church

The design extends into the park with an overhead bridge so that people can get a view of the park below.The space under this bridge accommodates temporary stalls during the church fair.

These walls shift at some places from the buliding towards the road so that people walking on the foothpath can engage in the design as well,giving them an experience of an heritage walk.

The external cladding is made up of 3D tiles forming a distinct pattern varying in thickness.Sandstone was selected as it is easy to carve and gives the house a traditional look.

A

An open H-Shaped plan accomodating courtyards is observed.Large openings puncture the masses on the rear side to achieve this openness.Yet light weight wooden screens are fixed to give a sense of privacy.

These wooden sections are arranged in varying and repeating patterns such that all spaces receive adequate light and view.

Slendor 50x150mm Jute composite profiles were selected.These sections are: -Lightweight.

-Cheaper than wood.

-Fire resistant.

-Does not lose it’s color due to weathering.

Inspiration

In order to separate the living room from the foyer entrance,a partition wall was to be designed to provide privacy.This wall was required to be light weight and complement the classical interiors.

Many options were laid out.Some with intricate patterns and the others with simple glass panels.

Option 5 combines various textures of glass bound by brass coated metal frames going with the classical interiors.There are voids to SNN FOYER SCREEN SECTIONAL allow light.This pattern is PLAN held 1-1 by a wooden 4 SCALE 1:20 framework built on site.

A lighting fixture was to be designed above the bar cabinet behind the foyer screen in the dining area.

Hollow 20mm dia brass coated metal tubes hold the LED bulbs.These tubes of varying lengths are suspended in a distinct pattern by markings made on a wooden base which is screwed to the ceiling.

Critical to any architectural project is th site. Architects have long sought different ways to analyse and understand the site.

THE DISSOLUTION OF A SHARED DISCOURSE.FAKE

Thus,as architects,will attempt to understand the site,not through first hand experience,but through assembling the fragmented narratives of others into a new whole.

NEWS,FORMATION BUBBLES AND ECHO CHAMBERS ARE ALL EXAMPLES OF A MULTITUDE OF NARRATIVES THAT COEXIST,YET NEVER INTERACT.

GLASS FRAGMENTS

Collect,forage,hack and aggregate as many narratives as possible from the internet and social media in a single hour about Trafalgar Square.

There exists a tension between the tangible historic built form and the intangible cultural platform it serves to be,hosting events in this current age of social media.

These narrative fragments are now made out glass fragments.Workshops held to explore various techniques of glass such as:assemblage,laser cutting,layering,painting,slumping etc.

GRAND NARRATIVE-2 Of a Fragmented now The cartographer started her survey,mapping the physical space of the square,however lately she has become consumed with mapping the bounty of events taking place therein.Constantly chasing likes and updates, she has lost all sense of stability.Caught riding a wave of transience.

MOD E L S An individual exercise that included assigning a suitable function after making the model.The organic form housed an art gallery and the rigid form housed a restaurant.Properties of the material used and elements like light and scale were explored.

OTHER PURSUITS Following are the study tours that extended the design studio outdoors and included interactions with the locals which helped us understand how the history, climate, people , cultural habits and food can influence ways of living in a place.Other interests also include performance arts.

A void Matter,2018 Art can comfort the distress or distress the comfortable.As a trained student of contemporary dance, we curated dance productions raising awareness about social concerns such as depression, distress and war.A self-exploratory journey that shaped us to become sensitive individuals through the power of performance.

Kochi,India-2015 In order to pay tribute to the first ever Biennale 2015 in Kochi, India, we visited Fort Kochi and conceptualised an artist’s residence in the given context. Identifying the diversity in Kochi, we documented places like the Jew town to understand the built fabric and it’s influences.

Badami,India-2014 As part of documentation exercises, a class of 40 students,including me visited the UNESCO heritage site of Badami, Karnataka, where we surveyed an old living village by the cave temples to understand the primitive techniques of planning.Back at the studio, we used the data and master plans to design a primary healthcare centre to improve the health conditions of the people.

United States of America,2014 During my first year of college, a group of 30 students including me were selected to visit celebrated works of Architect Frank Loyd Wright in the United States of America.We visited these estates particularly the iconic Falling waters house in Wisconsin, and also learnt about his eye for detail in his furniture and lighting design.

Santhe Honda (Water Body) Site

Honda System

Research ProjectAnalysing the ancient water systems in Chitradurga, Karnataka that can help ease the water stress in the region.We concluded that these water systems shaped the social and cultural scene in the town by behaving as important public nodes by intensive field work and local interviews.Sante Honda,chosen water body with a built context, was analysed to support the research.
