[Bigger than a Street, Smaller than a City Category]

There are multiple existing proposals with premises to address the current and future urban issues of Los Angeles. It could be argued that the city not only needs proposals and policies but also experimental prototypes to speculate its uncertain future. Prioritizing the socio-economic and ecological notion of equity which signifies access to transportation, green and blue space, housing, and food within a metropolitan context is the potential meta-narrative to simulate an urban prototype 5

for the cities of the future. This macro urban prototype could be mass-produced regardless of its territorial limitations in varied locations, scales with either independent or interdependent functions to provide optimized access to urban equity and quality. The ICEBERG project is an attempt to design the first urban scale off-grid prototype with a regenerative system within a walkable neighborhood on the east side of the Los Angeles River, for a population of 30,000 in a 150-acre land.

The heavy manufacturing site is within disconnected proximity of residential, cultural, and civic zonings. It has almost half a mile edge alongside the river and two existing entrances.[1]

The size of the site fits a 15-20 min walkable module. Approximately 150 acre land (with redefined edges) can almost fit four Hudson Yards, and seven Piggyback Yards can build a Central Park. [2]

The regenerative systemtransforms waste into energy.Naturally cleans the river water to use for agricultural irrigation, collects rainwater, gray water and runs it through a purifying system to produce potable water.

Solar, wind, and the energy produced by fuel cells are connected to a smart grid to optimize the energy distribution.Fresh fruit and vegetable are produced by hydroponic farms and vertical aeroponic systems. This system covers all demands of 30,000 users.

Iceberg’s off-grid prototype with its regenerative system fully supplies the demands of its water, waste, energy, and food systems. A natural cleansing system provides agricultural irrigation from the LA River and a purifying system utilizes potable water from the river’s water, graywater, and collected rainwater for daily use of the residents. After collecting and recycling waste, it transforms into bio-energy which can cover the electricity demands of all housing units.

Besides, solar panels, micro wind turbines, and fuel cell power generators are producing the remaining energy demands which are all connected to a smart grid for optimized distribution.

The iceberg consists of three components as its main systems: eco-filter, eco-farm, and ecovillage. The systems build themselves up in short, mid, and long-term phases to achieve micro to macro visions.

The Eco filter with multiple stages of the natural water treatment system collects, cleans, and distributes water with micro-dams which manipulates the river flow to provide a recreational lake and park forthe neighborhood and also surrounded communities.

Opportunity zones are an economic development tool - designed to spur economic development by providing tax benefits to investors.

As an example, all of Puerto Rico is one Opportunity Zone.

Glenwood, Oregon is an Opportunity Zone too.The City of Glenwood is interested in developing an athletic and community 35

recreation center as the primary anchor.

With no retail tax, the government has little incentive to encourage retail development.

The ARCHIPELAGO project is in Eugene city, Oregon. It bounded a neighborhood from the west, east, and south sides and the river from the north side.

The idea of the project is to reshape the boundary of the river, let it flow to the architecture, and become one of the important parts of public life.

As a result of the changing boundaries, the project reshapes itself as an ARCHIPELAGO. The project site is connected with the city with walking and bicycle paths.

All vehicular roads are underground and because of its parks smoothly turn into green roofs and becoming the connective tissue for the city and the ARCHIPELAGO.

Our research shows that MNN is a project with great potential also subject to great volatility.

It has spent most of the past quarter-century bogged down in fruitless planning; at the mercy of swaying political agendas, social skepticism and global crises.

Any urban planning of this magnitude in Madrid will need to account for the feasibility challenges wrought by the alternating and potentially more radical power structures it will be subject to.

Given these multiple forces over which we have no control, we decided to shift focus from a program-based approach to an infrastructural one; in order to secure the core needs of a new city center while leaving space for an open-ended infill to stitch the surrounding urban fabric over time.

In a way, our proposal is an open challenge to all other proposals, as we are prioritising strategic feasibility above the allure of the singular image or business case.

[ Natural Environment/Energy/Organizational System ]

URBAN STRATEGY

To concentrate as much of a fixed program of buildings that any urban development would need in a high-density spine that provides a continuation of Madrid’s main artery, Paseo La Castellana, towards the growing northern suburbs.

Because of the site’s particular geometry, we are reshaping a nuclear city core into a linear city core that extends along the train lines, providing accessibility and connectivity to the uneven built environment around the site. Rather than a fixed layout, this proposal is an organizational system that accommodates: 1. the renovated Chamartín Station, as the main point of local/international access to the site; 2. MNN’s core program and emergent buildings through two spines, with one northern half that caters to its residential surroundings and a southern half that does so to its commercial surroundings; 3. the cities’ natural growth nodes and typologies in the immediate surroundings.

Concerning the morphology of the project: though this approach is more systematic than formal, the conception of the spine is very sculptural an iconic megastructure that deliberately meanders through the site while attached to the road system.

Project Ends With the Spine: The urban development ceases after the spine is built, and the city grows naturally into it, using the infrastructure and services it provides.

SCENARIO_9 [MID DENSITY]

Cultural Boom: The spine helps articulate a sudden need for cultural program with landmark buildings such as an exhibit center, a university, stadiums and museums. These spaces are conceived to welcome a potential surge in immigration, which will live within the site, using 50% of MNN’s original housing program, and reaching a population density of 6,000hab km² (roughly the same as London and the rest of Madrid). Smaller, more dispersed, public spaces help community-building and social integration.

Economic Boom.

The spine helps organise a rapid growth of commercial buildings around it, which adhere to it as it thickens into a high density scheme developing outward from the spine and towards the E/W edges of the neighboring districts.

The concentration of buildings calls for large parks, creating a small Manhattan in Madrid.

Corporate buildings peak at 3,2m m² of commercial real estate, matching Europe’s largest financial hub at La Défense. Housing developments accompany this growth, with 75% of MNN’s original housing program, reaching a population density of 8,000 hab/ km² (50% above Madrid’s density).

Dilijan is situated in a National Park Reserve and consists of an estimated 10,000 residents.

The goal is to create a devel-opment strategy that focuses on education, culture, tourism, health, and research in social sciences. Emphasis should be placed on closing infrastruc-tural development gaps, as well as identifying needs by conducting a complete urban assessment.

Projects should be developed and financed based on their assessed priority and should be in harmony with the master plan proposal 63

UWC Dilijan College is the first project in Armenia to receive a BREEAM certification. This project is a part of the UWC Dilijan College Campus, situated on 88 hectares of land, located within the National Park of Dilijan.

A campus for an international boarding school to house 650 people s. Initially the site comprised ten hectares of land, but as the ambition and size of the school grew, the masterplan was developed further and the school site currently sits on 88 hectares.

The Cascade is a giant stairway in Yerevan, Armenia. It links the downtown area of Yerevan with the upper neighborhoods. The construction of the Cascade designed by prominent Soviet Armenian architects was launched in 1971 and completed in 1980. Inside the Cascade is a couple of escalators going the length of the complex. There are also rooms connected to some of the landings along the escalators which comprise the Cafesjian Museum of Art. The exterior of the Cascade, in addition to stairs, has multiple levels with fountains and sculptures. From stairs opens unobstructed views of central Yerevan and Mount Ararat. The development would consist of three phases/areas: 1. Renovation and refurbishment of the existing museum inside the Cascade stairway.

2. The new museum of modem art on the top of the Cascade. The new museum would be a continuation of the Inside-staircase existing muse-um. It would Incorporate as well the abandoned project of the new museum, which was once started and left on the stage of the foundation because of the crisis of 2008.

3. Design of an Art and Youth creativity community up on the hill on the vacant plot to the right or the Cascade upper top. The community would comprise a variety of functions such as craftsmen workshops, souvenir shops, co-working spaces, youth creativity fac-tories, children’s playgrounds, and much more. The exterior design and structure would represent the old Yerevan tufa buildings style that is on a verge of extinction.

HISTORICAL REFERENCES FOR ART AND YOUTH VILLAGE QUARTER Monastery Complex

The disassembled old stone buildings of Yerevan might be concentrated and rebuilt in this area

• The structure of the existing ground levels are maintained.

• Four additional platforms are crated, according to the rhythmic divisions and slope of the Cascade.

• Each of the levels is separated into an interior and an exterior part. The exterior parts will be open-air public areas that will provide gathering and interaction spaces for people of all ages, and stages for open-air sculptures. From each open-air level, there will be an entrance to its interior part, separated by a glass front. The interior areas will contain exhibition halls, to house the permanent collection as well as temporary exhibitions and an interactive children’s museum to fill the lack of activities for a growing number of families with children in Yerevan.

• The new platforms of the Cascade penetrate the Village Quarter in the form of rays, that, starting from the Cascade, go deeper into the heart of the Village, connecting the public spaces of the two entities.

by Grigor Illuminator, the first Armenian Catholicos, was built here. Throughout centuries Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin was the spiritual and cultural center of all Armenians of the entire world. The official residence of Catholicos of All Armenians is also located here.

During the Soviet period, the Public Park has become a new cultural center, where people of all age categories spent their time.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the church again gradually acquired its territory and the park was gradually abandoned.

Now Echmiadzin doesn’t have an urban public park.

The project proposed a renovation of the existing park. In the New Community Park will be renewed key places from the old park, for urban living that takes a responsible and viable stance towards the environment. Echmiadzin Park combines the use of water, nature, and community to create a healthy and vibrant environment for both locals and newcomers.

GOSTS OF MEMORIES

+ Summer Cinema was one of the most important places in the park where people liked to spend time with their families.

Every evening, with the sounds of a live orchestra, the whole city danced. For the young, it was a great chance to get acquainted, for the elderly to remember their youth. + Water is one of the main symbols of the hot cities in Armenia.

Fountains with drinking water and water channels were in all towns and villages. Children in water channels played different games, for example, competitions with paper boats or running competitions. + Billiards? Only for men with cigars. Women are not allowed to enter! + All urban patterns and elements were riched of symbols.

The villages of Tatev and Halidzor are located in south-eastern Armenia.

This region is renowned throughout the country for its spectacular scenery and the ancient Tatev monastery. As part of a larger Armenian private and public partnership venture, a new masterplan aims to regenerate this undiscovered area to enable and attract tourism as well as to build and enhance the local economy. As of yet, the current foundation of Tatev is unknown, but excavations in the Tatev area have produced artefacts dating back to the Late Bronze and the Early Iron Ages (as early 87

as 2000BC), and the territory (known as historic Hovk) was used as hunting grounds and a resting place.

Due to constant invasions, the territory and settlement changed hands and names many times over the coming centuries, belonging to Persia, the Kayen State and the Kust-Artsakhyan State among others. The monastery ofTatev were built in the 9th century respectively, and quickly devel­ oped into important cultural and educational centre.In this region. Halidzor Master Plan devel­opment would consist of two phases.

The main task of the project was an architectural concept that would be in keeping with the two-scale of Yerevan - cozy in the historic center and high-rising on the fringes. High-rise accent of the composition - the thin hundred-meter slab of the hotel faced by the main facade the south – “looking at Ararat”. The wish to enter a dialogue with the bible mountain commits to restrained and clear solutions. Therefore the building has a simple rectangular silhouette.

ce premises serve as a pedestal for the high-rise slab. This development in respect of the scale should remind the picturesque historical buildings of the city – such as on the Kond Mountain. UWC Dilijan College is the first BREEAM-certified project in Armenia. Phase 1 included the main academic complex, sports center, dormi tories, technical buildings, medical center, and the gatehouse. Phase 1 was completed in 2014. Completion of Phase 2 is expected by 2020. The campus has been designed to ensure sustainability and efficiency, local maintainability, and the use of environmentally friendly solutions such as green roofs and living walls.

The main UWC school complex includes administration, classrooms block, science and art block, and the learning center (library, IT, and group presentation pods). The exterior features living walls, green roofs and the local Armenian tufa stone. Internally, there are two atriums with concertina-shaped glazed roofs.

The sports center includes a UEFA international standard soccer pitch; all-weather basketball, volleyball and tennis courts; a competition 25m swimming pool, and large flexible areas for basket ball, netball, indoor mini-soccer, gymnastics, ping-pong and badmin ton. A fully equipped gym includes martial arts and dance areas with ample spectator seating and viewing galleries. Architecturally, the Sports Centre features an innovative combination of local stone and contemporary full-height glazed curtain walls. Externally, the sports center includes a lawn, green roofs, and living walls. The small gatehouse at the campus entrance has been designed to be in harmony with the main school buildings and incorpo rates living walls and a green roof.

My contributions to the design and construction of the UWC campus include: concept of master plan, landscape architecture, participation in the design of the main Academic Building, Sports Centre, Headmasters House and Boarding Houses, drawings and 1:20 detail solutions, 3D modeling (BIM), rendering, furniture design (including all built-in components), and preparation of all presentation material. For the Private Residential Type XL and XS, I was the project manager with responsibilities for all levels of design, 3D modelling (BIM), preparation of construction drawings (including 1:5 detail solutions) and specifications, interfacing with all engineers working on this project, and construction supervision.

The school campus has been designed to ensure that the buildings are not only sustainable and efficient but also locally maintainable and environmentally friendly and renewable technologies are being used. Green roofs and living walls will serve several purposes for a building, such as absorbing rainwater, providing insulation, creating a habitat for wildlife, and helping to lower air temperatures in summer and insulate in winter. UWC Dilijan College is one of the first schools in the world to cover such large areas of its façade with 4750 sqm meters of green roof and 1500 sqm of living walls made of vegetation from the surrounding forests.

Architecturally, the Sports Centre features an interesting combination of materials such as traditional local stone and contemporary full height glazed curtain walls. The space plays to the strengths of the strong Armenian sporting heritage while introducing the students to new sporting activities and offering the latest in physical education.

The outdoor facilities include a UEFA international standard flood-lit grass football pitch, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts. Indoor facilities include a competition standard indoor swimming pool (25m), large multi-gymnasium areas. A fully equipped fitness gym includes a judo and dance area.

The design of each boarding house creates a village-like atmosphere and utilises the steep topography of the site. The striking presence of the location allows for interesting spaces to be created and spectacular mountain views.

Local construction methods and materials using a selection of Armenian stone and timber have been installed along with traditional clay tiled roofs to give a typical Dilijan feel.

Each boarding house constructed during Phase 1 of the school consists of four quadrants, with a central common courtyard. Each quadrant accommodates approximately 40 students, including accommodation in-house for staff (house ‘parent’ or tutor).

Architecture exists in sound. Buildings and sound effect each other, inspiring new solutions, forming innovative structures and becoming both actors and subjects of their constant interaction.

What if... The unbuilt buildings could have a memory of the sounds? With the sound to the 3d object converter these unpredictable and the predetermined memories unfold together to make everything the way is.

As the new element of the combinatory system [ time|sound ], these 3D objects are creating a new space in a time machine with a soundscape.

Let’s consider the word debris. It’s a French word from the eighteenth century that signifies the leftovers of a previous structure. Debris is what’s leftover after a destructive event. Oftentimes, the events that produce the debris are long forgotten though the artifacts remain for a long time. Throughout a city’s history, many such events emerge that produce a debris field in an urban landscape. We’re interested in Los Angeles’ unique debris field.

What’s difficult about studying the debris field is that the debris largely remains invisible and unconscious because they exist outside of the public narratives of a city. It requires a bit of detective work. Oil wells, crime scenes, crypts and tombs, military and scientific instruments, weird hidden sports facilities, haunted houses, 133

social media backdrops, and miniature monuments are scattered throughout the city. Long forgotten, deliberately hidden, or simply too absurd to discuss, the debris field escapes attention and exists in a neglected state.

But what if these neglected objects of the built environment tell a more accurate, or least, a more interesting story of Los Angeles? Because there is so little known about these leftovers of previous urban histories, we decided to work as urban detectives to document these objects and reconstruct these forgotten histories. We’ve organized this strange collection in five chapters. This is not so much intended to be a complete collection, but more a consistency that seemed obvious as we gathered the evidence.

3_Selfie Space [Non-Virtual Backgrounds for Virtual Backgrounds]

6 October in 2010, this is the historic moment that Instagram made Earth become square. In the same place, people use the network of Instagram to create shared collective memories. The existence of such emergent need to share memory triggers the birth of a building type having no regard for the so-called concept of ‘place’.

These spaces don’t necessarily have programming purposes but have to be instagrammable places for people to take selfies. But what makes these places abandoned?

1_Architectural Cosplay [Camouflage, Misdirection, and Fantasy]

Just like people, architecture also engages in cosplay. Architecture puts on disguises, misdirections, and hides, or engages in fantasy. In this chapter, we are documenting those buildings or sites that are very different from what they seem to be. In other cases, they are buildings that are deliberately hidden.

4_Weird Icons [Optical Black Holes and Accidental Monuments]

Have you seen people living in a boat on the street?

Or have you ever driven into the huge donut? Maybe the best ballerina you have seen was a clown on your head? These weird icons have many stories and legends, but which are true no one knows. As deeper, we try to understand how creepy they are.

2_Evil Sites

[Dead Zones, and Haunted Spaces]

The city is our living place, but it also is our place to die. If we compare the murder cases in New York and Los Angeles, we will find that a large percent of the cases in Los Angeles happened in the house rather than in the park-like New York. Hotels and houses, streets and graves, what makes them so haunted and what can we learn from it?

The buildings remained the Cold War memories are like specimens in the amber, from time to time, they become history in the artwork. Those cold remnants of the Cold War are currently displayed in Los Angeles as conceptual artwork. War turns into an art piece.

Professional Work: Urbanlab [urbanlab.am] Location: Sevan, Armenia Project Team: Anush Harutyunyan, Sarhat Petrosyan Art Critic and Curator: Ruben Arevshatyan Between 1932 and 1965 during Soviet rule, a picturesque retreat for the Writers’ Union of Armenia was built on the sprawling shore of Lake Sevan outside the nearby capital of Yerevan. The two buildings that form the Sevan Writers’ Resort the guest house (19321935) and the lounge (1963-1965) were designed with strikingly divergent aesthetics, but share the same architect. The markedly different sty­listic choices are the result of Armenia’s close, but often fraught relationship with the Soviet Union. The guest house, designed by Gevorg Kochar (1901-1973) and Mikael Mazmanyan (1899-1971), is a model of early Soviet avant-garde ideals, utilizing abstract forms to represent social topianism and creat­ing a functional, progressive and egalitarian space that exemplified the ideals of the revolution.

Two years after the completion of the guest house, the archi­tects fell victim to the Stalinist regime; they were arrested and exiled to Siberia for 15 years. Rehabilitated after Stalin’s death, Kochar was commis­sioned to add the lounge and reconstruct the guest house in 1963. Emulating the international style, the new building com­plemented the guest house and harmonized the ensemble with the natural landscape, incorporating the view of medieval monastic churches located at the end of the peninsula.

To this day, the site contin­ues to be used by Armenian authors for rest and contem­plation.

Armenia was established as an independent state in 1991 af­ter the fall of the Soviet Union.

Today, many of the great ar­chitectural icons of the Soviet period are under threat or have already been demolished.
