consider it’s a great privilege to .......penafewwordsasthepresident of the Anuradhapura Toastmasters Club to the April newsletter. Since it was a difficult period for the entire world due to the Corona pandemic and many issues, every sector faced criticalchallenges.
l turbulence in Sri Lanka made the situationworse.WhenitcomestoToastmastershavingthe physicalmeetingwasthebiggestchallenge.Butasleaders and innovative thinkers, toastmasters were able to cope with the situation boldly while introducing new ways of holdingavirtualmeetingwhichwasanovelexperiencefor the Sri Lankan community, furthermore, hybrid meetings helped to enhance the quality of meetings in a new dimension.
The next most difficult challenge was to maintain the member base in unimaginable financial issues. However, although a distance club with many difficulties we were abletomaintaintheclubmemberbasewithoutlosingany members. It is not because all members are financially stablebuteveryonebelievesinwhattheygetfromtheclub andshouldnotleavetheclubinthissituation.Inaddition, some senior members voluntarily come forward to pay others' dues and helped to maintain the member base of theclub. Without finding reasons or excuses for giving up whatwedo,ifwethinkdifferentlyandbelieveintheteam and their effort, even facing a difficult situation can be turned into a passion that takes us towards success and victoriesinourlife.

Conducting a Toastmasters meeting is one of the biggest ...........challenges among all other troubles as a Vice President Education. Refusing to do a role, especially a prepared speaker drawing out various reasons at the last moment was a really big stress I had. Though I circulated the annual speech plan early, it seemslessattentionpaid.Itwasahardshipforthesmooth-running clubmeetings.Therefore,Idecidedtopublishalistofspeakersand main role players like TMOD & Smart Talker two weeks before in ordertopreparation.
Furthermore,scheduledthemeetingagendaonSundaynight,whichmeansothermembers canreadyfortheirresponsibilities3daysinadvanceandIbelieveditwouldbeafairperiod tothem.There,ImentionedtheresponsibilitiesofTMODandGeneralEvaluator;tocheck andgetaconfirmationfromtheirteammembers.Itwasanaddedconvenienceforme.The mostimportantfactwastherejecterswereleftwiththeresponsibilityofreplacingsomeone elseontheirbehalfandIinsistedit.Throughthisprocedure,Iammanagingtheclub meetingseasilythanbefore.Toastmasterisacollectiveinitiativeandavoluntaryprogram builtforourownbetterment.Wecannotmakeprogresswithoutmakingtherightdecisions attherighttime.Wherefore,sometimestoughdecisionshadtobemade,butIfeelitworked tofairextent.

Toastmasters " is what literally made me a confident ............speaker.First,whenmyEnglishteacher,Mrs.Nirosha toldmethenameofthisclub,Iwassocurious.Ithoughtit wouldbesomethingaboutfood.So,itwasabig'yes'forme to join the club. When we started meeting sessions, I realized that this is a place with beautiful and creative peoplewhoarewillingtoimprovethemselveswhilehelping others. I would say, it was tastier than food! Through the Gavel club, I could learn how to perform in front of an audiencewithoutstagefear.
Itwasalsoagreatplatformtobuildupgoodleadershipskills.Moreover,Toastmasters helpedmetoorganizeaninterestingspeechthatcouldgrabtheaudiencequickly.It's not about the traditional speeches we hear every day. It's about jaw-dropping, extraordinary speeches for the audience. It was a place of happiness and fun. Theyear2018wasaremarkableyearfor Anuradhapura Central College. This was the year in which the
foundationfortheGavelClubwaslaid,underthesupervision oftheAnuradhapuraToastmastersClub.Asaresult,thefirst Gavel Club in Anuradhapura was formed in Central College with a starting number of 30 members, the club kept expanding up to today with daily recruits. The advantages gainedbythosestudentswereimmeasurable.Furthermore, the club has assisted in obtaining national-level places in oratory on English day competitions (D.M.Dewmi Pabasara2023AllIsland2ndplace).
ShewasafoundingmemberoftheGavelClubandwastrainedattheToastmastersYouth Leadership Program for Gavellians island-wide. Accordingly, many children have been masteringtheartofEnglishlanguagehandlingskillsundertheClub'sguidance.Duringthe Covid-19pandemic,thefrequentmeetingsoftheclubcametoapause.Althoughallthe healthguidelineswereimposed,thelowattendanceofthememberswasahugesetback. Amidst all these, most of the founding members ended their academic life in school resulting in a lack of engagement in club activities. Next came the island-wide fuel shortagewhicheventuallyledtoatemporaryshutdownofschools,wheretheGavelClub meetingsmettheirend.Butwiththeriseofanewyear,theGavelClubagainfounditsway backontrackwiththeimmensesupportofacertaingroupofveryspecialpeople.
Whoarethesesaviorswhohelpedusgetbackonourfeet?Whoaretheonesresponsible forthegreatresurrectionoftheGavelClub?Theyarenoneotherthantheprestigious Senior members of the Anuradhapura Toastmasters’ Club. From then till now the Toastmasters Club members have been keen on showing their endless support to the studentsofCentralCollege.I'mmakingthisanopportunitytoshowoursinceregratitude fortheirimmenseserviceonbehalfofAnuradhapuraCentralCollege.

Give the speaker your undivided attention. You can't give someone feedback on a speechunlessyouhearit.Whetheryou'reevaluatingaspeechforaclass,oryou'rehelping someone else prepare for a public speaking engagement, sit quietly and listen to the speechasitsgiven.Listencloselyandengagewiththespeaker.
Turnoffallelectronicdevicesandputawayanydistractions.Lookatthespeakerwhilethe speechisbeinggiven.Youshouldn'thaveanythinginyourhandsbutmaybeanotepadfor takingnotes.
Don'teverevaluateaspeechbasedonthetextalone.Inotherwords,don'treadthespeech andofferfeedback.Havethespeakerperformthespeech.Ifsomethingisdesignedtobe spoken,itneedstobeheardifitistobeappropriatelyevaluated.
Identifythemainideaofthespeech.Thefirstthingyouwanttopickuponinanyspeech is the main idea that's trying to be communicated. If you're listening to a persuasive speech,especially,learningthethesisorthemainideathatthespeakeristryingtoprove with the speech is the best place to start. It's the speaker's job to make the main idea obvious,soyoushouldbeabletorecognizethemainpointrelativelyquickly.
If you can't find the main idea of the speech, try to guess what you think the speaker is tryingtoprove.Writeitdown.Whenyou'reevaluatingthespeechlater,thiswillbehelpful feedback.
Forsomespeeches,likeatoast,atribute,orathankyou,themainideamightbeobvious, butplaydumb.Isthespeakergettingacrosstheideaclearly?Oristheoccasiondoingtoo muchofthework?Couldthespeakerdomoretomakethepointofthespeechobvious?
Trytofollowthesupportingargumentofthespeaker.Themainpointofthespeechis likeatabletop:it'suselessunlessit'sheldupbythetablelegsoftheexamples,supporting points, argument, logic, and any research that holds up the main idea. How does the speakerprovetotheaudiencethattheirmainpointistrue?
If you’re listening to a persuasive speech, try to come up with responses, questions, and retorts that you might use for feedback later. What was confusing? Were there any supportingpointsthatcouldbemadeclearer?Didyoufindanyholesintheargument? Ifyou’relisteningtoaninformalspeech,likeatoastoracongratulatoryspeech,focuson theorganizationoftheinformationthatwe’regetting.Doesitmakesense?Doesitfollow? Doesitseemtojumparound?
Be willing to be convinced. Going into a speech with a closed mind is a bad way to evaluateit.Evenifyou’regoingtolistentosomeonegiveaspeechattheFlatEarthSociety, try your best to go into it with an objective mind, willing to listen to the content and the presentation of anyone’s speech. If and when you disagree with it, you’ll be disagreeing withtheproduct,notlettingyourpreconceptionsofferyourcriticism.
Takenotes. Identify the key points and argument that the speaker is trying to make and keeptrackoftheminalist.Youdon'tneedtocomeoutofthespeechwithaformaloutline but keeping a short list of notes is an important way of generating material for feedback later.Takeclosenotesandyourevaluationwillbemucheasier.
Write down particularly memorable quotes or moments from the speech to praise. Write downanytimethespeakergetsagoodcrowdreaction,oranegativeresponse.
Evaluate the content of the speech. The most important part of the speech isn't the speaking style or the charisma of the speaker, it's the content of what is said. Giving a speechishardbecauseithasallthechallengesofwritinganessay,withtheaddeddifficulty ofhavingtomakeiteasytolistentooutloud.Themostimportantthingtofocusoninyour evaluationisthecontentofthespeech.Ifit'sapersuasivespeech,oranargumentspeech, thecontentwilllikelyincludealotofresearch,real-worldexamples,andmainpoints.Inan informalspeech,thecontentwilllikelyinvolveanecdotes,stories,andjokes.Whenyou're evaluating, keep in mind the following questions and answer them as a way of giving feedback.

Evaluatetheorganizationofthespeech.Tomakethecontentofaspeechclearandeasy to digest, it needs to be organized well. Formal or informal, public speaking needs to be easy to listen to. If the speech jumps around or moves from point to point like a tennis match, it might need to be reorganized. To help you evaluate the organization of the speech,keepinmindthefollowingquestionstogeneratefeedbackforthespeaker:

·Wasthespeecheasytofollow?Difficult?Why?
·Dothespeaker’spointsflowlogicallyfromonetothenext?

Evaluatethestyleofthespeech.Ifthecontentofthespeechreferstowhatisspoken,the stylereferstohowitisspoken.Agoodspeechshouldmatchthestyletothecontent:it's unlikely a serious paper about dolphin populations would involve "getting to know the audience"gamesoraudienceparticipation.Whetherornotaspeakerchoosestousejokes, how much the speaker engages with the audience, and other personal elements to the speechwillallplayintothestyle.Howaspeechiswrittenwillaffectthestyle,butalsohow itisperformed.Arethejokestoldliketheyarejokes?Isresearchpresentedaccuratelyand clearly?Keepinmindthefollowingquestions

Summarizethespeechasyouunderstoodit.Startingfeedbackwithasummaryofwhat youtookfromthespeechisthemosthelpfulwayoflettingthespeakerknowwhetherwhat they were trying to say was communicated accurately. Don't worry about whether your summaryisperfectlyaccurateornot.Ifyouwerelisteningcloselyandtryingyourbestto follow it, any failure on your part should be instructive for the speaker. That's something theyneedtomakeclearerinthespeech.

Trytofocusonnomorethanthreekeyareasofimprovement.Overburdeningsomeone with fifty different things to fix and work on can make the job seem hopeless. As an evaluator, it’s important to focus on three major areas of improvement and worry less aboutmoresecondarythings.
Focusfirstoncontentcorrections,theorganizationofthespeech,andthetonebeforeyou focus on anything else in the speech. These are the most important categories for improvement, and the best ways to quickly improve the speech. Think of these as the highestorderofconcern.
Worryaboutthespecificsofthedeliverylater.Whetherornotthetimingofthejokeatthe end of the speech works should be one of the last things a speaker worries about. If the speechisalreadyverygood,feelfreetomoveontothesesecondaryconcerns.

Smart Talk is something different and members can freely express their views by complyingtoToastmastersgroundrules.Inthefirstepisodeofthesession,thepresident of the club started off the session as the Smart Talker. He came up with the word and requested the audience to guess it. He gave chance to each member to ask three questionseachandguessit.Theaudienceparticipatedinthesessionfullofcuriosityand finally,nobodywasabletoguessit.Itreallywentwellandespeciallyforallthemembers involvedintheevent.Bylookingattheevent,Iwashappytoseethatthepurposeofthe eventisachieved.
Duringameeting,asmarttalkercamewithknownitemsonthescreenandrequestedthe memberstopickone.Membershadtotelltwousagesoftheitemapartfromtheintended useoftheitem.Forexample,iftheitemisapolythenebag,theintendeduseoftheitemis to carry goods. But the members had to tell two other ways the polythene bag can be used.Duringanotheroccasion,thesmarttalkercameupwiththenamesofsomeplaces in Anuradhapura and the members had to pick one. Members had to describe the direction to that place from the meeting location without mentioning the name of the place.Meanwhile,othersneedtoguessthenameoftheplace.Thatwasalsoafun-filling session.ThebestpartisAnuradhapuraToastmastersisconductingthesessioninalltheir meeting without fail.
