Solar Power Plants

SOLAR POWER PLANTS Solar Power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, by directly using photo-voltaic (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP). Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaic convert light into an electric current using the photovoltaic effect.

ON-GRID SOLAR POWER PLANTS On-Grid Systems are solar PV systems that only generate power when the utility power grid is available. They must connect to the grid to function.

They can send excess power generated back to the grid when you are overproducing so you credit it for later use.

OFF-GRID SOLAR POWER PLANTS These systems allow you to store your solar power in batteries for use when the power grid goes down or if you are not on the grid. Hybrid systems provide power to offset the grid power whenever the sun is shining and will even send excess power to the grid for credit for later use.

HYBRID SOLAR POWER PLANTS A hybrid solar power system is combination of on grid solar system and off grid solar system. It has battery backup in it to store power and it also have the ability to feed surplus electricity into main grid.

INCENTIVES TO GO SOLAR Accelerated depriciation Section 85 of IT act provides Accelerated Depreciation of 40% of the invested capital to companies with tax liability. Solar Project Developers can set off their tax liability on the taxable income to the tune of 40% of solar project value in the 1st year, and subsequently 20% in the 2nd year.

Net metering Arrangement Net Metering allows the solar project owner to feed the excess solar power to grid when the load available is low, say, during weekends in office buildings. The excess power fed is offset against the electricity used from the grid in the electricity bill. This has been implemented in Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu till date.

Solar Water Heating System

SOLAR WATER HEATING SYSTEMS We are blessed with Solar Energy in abundance at no cost. One of the popular devices that harness the solar energy is Solar Water Heating Systems (SWHS). Solar water heaters are used to heat water globally where ROI is achieved within a time span of 2 years only.

FLAT PLATE COLLECTORS Covered on the top with 3.2 mm thick textured –toughened glass sheet. Inside flat plate collector systems are specially designed to meet every site and every industry condition. The solar radiation is absorbed by flat plate collectors which consist of an insulated outer aluminium box, there are blackened metallic absorber (selectively coated) sheets with built in channels or riser tubes made from copper to carry water. The absorber absorbs the solar radiation and transfers the heat to the flowing water. In Thermosyphon System Pump is not required for circulation; however a circulation pump is required in a forced flow system.

SOLAR WATER HEATING SYSTEMS They work well in climates where it rarely freezes. Pumps circulate a nonfreezing, heat-transfer fluid through the collectors and a heat exchanger.

This heats the water that then flows into the home. They are popular in climates prone to freezing temperatures.

EVACUATED TUBE COLLECTORS ETC works on a simple principle ‘Black body heat absorption principle’. Solar water heating systems using vacuum tubes made of borosilicate glass with special coating to absorb the solar energy. Air between the gaps of two glass tubes is evacuated. It results in high level of vacuum, which acts as the best insulation to minimize the heat loss from inner tube. The black coating on the inner tube absorbs the solar energy and transfers it to the water. The water on upper side of vacuum tube becomes hot and thus lighter, so it starts moving upwards in the tank. At the same time cold water, which is heavy, comes downward from the tank and is stored at the bottom.

SOLAR WATER HEAT PUMP AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP Air-to-water heat pump water heaters remove unwanted heat and humidity from the surrounding air and use it to heat water. Using free environmental heat from the air with heat pump technology for central heating and domestic hot water. The DRPL heat pump water heater is an integrated system that utilises the heat from air-to-water to heat the water. The DRPL heat pump technology provides more efficient way to heat water with electricity and it pulls heat from surrounding air then deposits the heat into the tank. The end result is very efficient production of hot water with cooler and dehumidified air. This technology is suitable for all domestic & light commercial applications.

WHY PUMP WATER HEATERS? It uses 70 less electricity compared to conventional water heating solutions. It uses electricity only to move heat from one place to another instead of using it to generate heat. This results in 70 less electricity consumption.

Heat pump waters heaters have a COP (Co-efficient of performance) of 3.6, meaning that the energy produced in the form of hot water is 3.6 times more than that is consumed. By comparison, electric water heaters have a COP of less than 1, resulting in heat pump waters giving an annual saving of approx. Rs. 9,300

Allows to select different modes by time setting.

For example, you can set your heater to work under rapid heating mode in the day and efficiency mode in the night.

This mode uses the heat pump for efficiency, but will use the electrical element for quick recovery following increased hot water usage.

During installation of DRPL heat pump, the minimum distance between the air outlet and the barrier should be 800mm. The DRPL heat pump electric water heater should be placed on a refractory base that is over 100mm of height. If the installed of DRPL heat pump in a confined space, the indoor space should not be less than 26 cubic metres.

External air is sucked inside the heat pump with the help of a fan.

The refrigerant then passes through an expansion valve where the pressure and the temperature is reduced further for the whole process to start again.

Since the refrigerant in the evaporator is kept at a lower temperature than the surrounding atmosphere, it absorbs heat from the basic surroundings and then evaporates.

The compressor compresses the gaseous refrigerant and raises the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant.

The heated refrigerant runs through the condenser coil wrapped around the storage tank, transferring the heat to the water stored there and its cools and condensates.

CASE STUDY OF FCP SYSTEM It is calculated by the Formula = M * S * T Where, M = Mass; S = Specific Heat; T = Difference in Temperature The mass of water for Solar Water Heating system is = 1,000 Litres The Specific heat of water is = 1 T is = 45 o C So, 1,000*1*45 = 45000 kcal One electrical unit = 860 kcal

But one electrical unit gives the efficiency of 90%, So, 860* 90/100 = 774 kcal

So, if you heat the required amount of water by electricity you will need 45,000 kcal amount of energy, i.e. = 45,000 / 774 = 58.13 kcal Electrical units will be consumed in heating 1000 LPD water per day.

So, the amount saved per year assuming the usage of 300 days in a year is = 300 * 58 * 8= Rs. 1, 39,200 per year.
