Foreword

A warm welcome to all our audience and a slightly belated Happy New Year 2023. It is a joyous occasion to have you gracing the exhibition.

We herald the opening of the art scene with the lifted restrictions of COVID-19 as we navigate through life, albeit not the same as pre-pandemic. Indeed, baby steps are taken to ensure public interaction become plausible, with a sense of unease of what life has to offer ahead of us. It is through design where ideas are shared and solutions are conjured. Presenting a thrilling selection of exemplary design-based insights from budding designers, we advocate design as an avenue to encourage public discourse, and this exhibition becomes one of the methods to make it accessible and engaging for the people, in time with the much-anticipated Singapore Art Week (SAW) 2023.

In sync to this year’s SAW, we expanded from the existing theme and contextualize our exhibition into “Play & Participate in Design”, where cross-disciplinary collaborations are pollinated to produce an interdisciplinary body of works.

To put the record straight, the works presented here are not an end in itself, but a means to an end We hope that the design solutions speak to the heart of the people, allowing a fragment of the lingering impression to stimulate a chain reaction of quality thoughts and inspire future actionable plans, through design

Thank you sponsors, partners, supporters and you, our audience We hope you have a good time joining us around the space as well as taking part in the activities

Visitors will be exposed to various types of artworks starting from posters, video documentation, jewellery, and even a 360degree VR experience. Each artwork presents an interesting narrative that is inspired from animated film, architectural style, symptoms, traditions, and landmarks. The purpose of the exhibition is to expand the potential of art-making through interactive and 'play'-able artworks In addition, there are plenty of fun interactive arts and enthralling visual displays to complement the gallery experience

Bringing this exhibition together is about sharing impactful messages, sorting out distractions, while offering a humble message from each design to the world What we hope beyond this showcase, is a beacon of hard-earned insight to inspire the future as a stepping stone, to solve issues that will be relevant in their era

Curator's Message

Play as a theme is rather whimsical and may seem childish in a hindsight. Where seriousness takes place, play is not so much a necessity, but a wishful act. Play is provocative, and yet, necessary as an act of seeking balance in life. Where social issues are getting more and more complex, so is the need to rethink our approach in design. Not only in terms of producing a radical outcome, but also a different set of minds, skill sets and ultimately, ideas that inspire actions.

True to that, "Play & Participate in Design" is held as an avenue to inquire the state of our tumultous society and how design responds to social-based issues at hand. Each of the seven artworks here, produced by 10 emerging design practitioners, is individually insightful, and collectively vibrant, in response to their definition of play.

About the Exhibition

Gather round, as we visualize ideas from invited artists to define their definition of play in their artistic practice as a visual repertoire of interaction Each artists' works is immersive, narrative, playful in their rights, and most importantly, cohesive in the overall viewing experience.

Through the theme, "Play and Participate in Design", each artist provides a teaser of their multi-faceted thoughts, messages, skills and awareness of things/issues around them Collectively, the entire space becomes a treasure trove for a multisensory experience, with a cross-disciplinary collaboration and interdisciplinary spirit.

The works displayed here are a testament of diversity in the design industry, which closely mimics life itself. Some of the works are tactile, while there are also digital and a little mixture of both After some thoughts, it is the word ‘exuberant’ that came out as a singular point to describe this overall showcase, this labour born out of love and grit

In addition to the exhibition, there are several artist sharing sessions and also hands-on workshops available to provide development opportunities for budding art practitioners, cultural enthusiasts and entrepreneurs in the creative industry
