EL ARTE DE HACER TANGIBLE ALGUNAS DE ENTRE LAS VARIAS FORMAS DE LO INDEFINIDO THE ART OF MAKING TANGIBLE SOME OF THE VARIOUS FORMS OF THE UNDEFINED

Luego de un primer año en Bogotá, Antonio Puri, artista nacido en Chandigarh, ciudad de la India, y educado en los Estados Unidos, decide exhibir la obra producida en este país en las instalaciones en donde esta ha sido realizada, durante ese mismo tiempo: un espacio de largos muros y techo bastante alto ubicado en el Barrio 7 de Agosto (zona comercial enfocada en la venta de partes automotrices, talleres de metal mecánica, bodegas de reciclaje y hasta bares populares y comercio sexual), muy cerca del Barrio San Felipe, que se ha convertido en los últimos cinco años en uno de los lugares que conglomera un efervescente circuito de galerías de arte, espacios independientes y talleres de artistas. Mientras San Felipe se ha consolidado como uno de los ejes culturales más activos de la ciudad, algunos de los amplios locales del barrio vecino (como el ocupado por Puri, que hace algunos años pertenecía a las instalaciones de una imprenta litográfica) empiezan a ser lentamente habitados por estudios de artistas que disponen así de un espacio privilegiado para producir y, como ocurre en su caso, también permitirse desplegar su obra.

After a first year in Bogotá, Antonio Puri, artist born in Chandigarh, India, who studied in the United States, decides to exhibit the work produced in this country in the facilities where it was made during that time period. Sin embargo, lo que a mi modo de ver constituye el vínculo intelectual más relevante es el producido a mediados de los años Noventa, cuando bajo el influjo de los pensadores de la India agrupados poco más de una década antes en torno al denominado Grupo de Estudios Subalternos (como Ranagit Guha, Gayatry Spivak, Dipesh Chakravarty, entre otros/ as) un muy distinto grupo de intelectuales locales consolidan para América Latina una vía de lectura de la cultura y la sociedad latinoamericanas que toma de allí el nombre de “poscolonial”, acuñado antes por estos pensadores de la India (que algunos/ as autores han hecho devenir hoy en la perspectiva decolonial). Se trata de un enfoque que daña las bases de una dominación epistemológica heredera de la mentalidad colonial desde la cual se ha construido la historia y las formas de conocimiento que han sido, en gran medida, las bases tanto emocionales y sociales de la imaginación política y estética así como de los discursos y las narratologías posibles: las relaciones desiguales de dominio y subordinación que articularon las supremacías de un

It deals with an approach that damages the basis of an epistemological domination inherited from colonial mentality from which history and forms of knowledge have been constructed. In great part the social and emotional foundations of political and aesthetic imagination, as well as discourse and possible narratologies. The unequal relations of domination and subordination that articulated the supremacy of a new order that, nonetheless, reproduces schemes from the previous one, in the imposition of an arbitrary and homogenizing singularity (as a visible aspect of the main contradiction between the colonizer and the colonized): a fruitful dialogue from South to South.

Sus propuestas pertenecen a una época en la que, luego de más de medio siglo de auge del arte contemporáneo, puede desplazarse por muchos medios y, aun cuando existe un fuerte nexo con la pintura (lo que eminentemente podría ser un rasgo moderno), existe en su trabajo una aproximación a ella que la hace híbrida y la contamina permanentemente de aspectos informalistas o extra-pictóricos (y en ocasiones, con asimilaciones que la llevan al terreno de la instalación o del arteacción) así como modos de hacer que no permiten clasificar su pintura tan fácilmente en ese género.

Antonio Puri belongs to an epoch that has these reflections as parameters that stake strongly for the nomadic, even if these have not converted either in dominant intellectual contexts. He embodies them in his own way through a gesture that based on a deep introspective component decides to also inhabit culture and produce discourses of enunciation in favor of the differential. His proposals belong to a time period in which, after over half a century of contemporary art boom, can move amongst many mediums and even if a strong bond with painting exists (which could be a predominantly modern feature), there is in his work a way of approaching it that makes it hybrid, and permanently contaminates it with informalist or extra-pictorial aspects (in occasions with assimilations that takes it into the fields of installation or action art), as well as ways of making that do not allow for an easy classification of his work in that genre.

From the title chosen for this first exhibition in Bogotá, Puri presents himself as an iconoclast: “UnReligare” is the negation (with the anglo prefix “un”) of a Latin term, basis of the word “religion” that signifies “unite strongly” or “link together”. Ese es un movimiento que hace un guiño a acciones previas en las que el artista restringe sus movimientos al ser amarrado en hilos y hebras que lo envuelven forzándolo a conectar con puntos de anclaje en los techos o madejas u ovillos gigantes, o bien dejándose maniatar y luego liberar (como la acción presentada en mayo de este año para su residencia en la Casa Tres Patios - C3P, de Medellín, perteneciente a su proyecto “AttachmenDetachment”, donde es capturado o apresado en un tramado que procede de un ovillo de yute que luego toma en sus manos y además enredado entre gruesas hebras de algodón que se encontraban suspendidas del techo, quedando inmóvil y fijo en

Antonio Puri nació en Chandigarh y creció en los Himalayas, donde asistió a internados ingleses e internacionales. Después asistió a la Academia de Artes de san Francisco y al Coe Collegue en Iowa para su pregrado en Artes y posteriormente recibe su título de abogado de la Universidad de Iowa. Ha expuesto su trabajo en exposiciones en solitario alrededor del mundo incluyendo Sundaram Tagore gallery en Singapur; Government Museum y Art gallery en Chandigarh, india; Art Depot, Austria; The Guild, Nueva York; Nu Art Gallery, Santa fe; Twelve gates y Philadelphia Art Alliance, Filadelfia; y una exhibición de dos artistas en Noyes Museum, Nueva Jersey.También ha participado en numerosas exhibiciones colectivas incluyendo espacios como Essl Museum, Austria; Hammond Museum, Queens Museum, Nueva York; Gallery Espace, Nueva Delhi; Edsviks Konsthall, Estocolmo; MOP Gallery, Sidney; Musee du Chateau, Francia; Corcoran Gallery, Washingtong DC y Minneapolis Institute of Arts, entre otras. Su trabajo hace parte de la colección de diferentes Museos; National Gallery of Modern Art, Mauritius, Noyes Museum y Bergen Museum of art and science en Nueva Jersey; Essl Museum en Austria; Musee du Chateau en Francia. Su trabajo ha sido reseñado en el new York Times, Washington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer, Indian Express, Art das Kunstmagazin, entre varias otras publicaciones. Ha hecho residencias en Hungria, Bulgaria, Suráfrica, Serbia, Mauritius, India, Dinamarca y Romania.

Antonio Puri was born in Chandigarh and raised in the Himalayas where he attended English and International boarding schools. Later he attended the Academy of Art in San Francisco and Coe College in Iowa for a bachelors degree in Art and later a JD degree from the University of Iowa. He has exhibited his work in solo exhibitions all over the world including Sundaram Tagore Gallery Singapore, Government Museum and Art gallery Chandigarh, India, Art Depot, Austria, The Guild, NY, Nu Art Gallery in Santa Fe, Twelve Gates, Philadelphia, Philadelphia Art Alliance, and a two person show at the Noyes Museum, NJ. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions worldwide including venues like Essl Museum, Austria, Hammond Museum, NY, Queens Museum, NY, Gallery Espace, New Delhi, Edsviks Konsthall, Stockholm, MOP Gallery, Sydney, Musee du Chateau, France, Corcoran Gallery in DC, and Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, among others. Museum collections include National Gallery of Modern Art, Mauritius, Noyes Museum, NJ, Essl Museum, Austria, Musee du Chateau, France, and Bergen Museum of Art and Science, NJ. His work has been reviewed in the New York Times, Washington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer, Indian Express, Art das Kunstmagazin, among several other periodicals. He has done residencies in Hungary, Bulgaria, South Africa, Serbia, Mauritius, India, Denmark, and Romania.
