“[I love this record] because every song was so well-crafted and well-arranged. There was science fiction, and it was decadent sexuality, glitter and edgy.”

The New York Dolls—New York Dolls (Mercury) [1973]

“The first Dolls album [is a glam rock classic because of songs like] ‘Jet Boy,’ ‘Trash’ and ‘Personality Crisis.’ The Dolls took the glammiest bit of the Stones and made something new of it.”

Duran Duran’s John Taylor: Glam Rock Greats Duran Duran may have been defined as a New Romantic/New Wave band early on in its existence with a predilection for Chic, but certainly for bassist John Taylor, glam rock was the rock and roll bug he got bit by at an early age. While he was too young to go see David Bowie when his Ziggy Stardust/Aladdin Sane tour pulled into Taylor’s hometown of Birmingham, England, in 1973, Taylor wouldn’t miss his chance a year later when Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson came to town behind a tour for his solo debut Slaughter on 10th Avenue. It was

a show Taylor went to with future Duran Duran bandmate (who was going by his then birth name of Nicholas James Bates). Still a major music fan, Taylor is currently caught up in watching the HBO series Vinyl about the 1970s New York City rock scene, geeking out long enough to critique the rig the fictional Johnny Thunders used while playing with the New York Dolls in one episode. Having declared “All the Young Dudes” to be “...the greatest glam rock song of all time,” Taylor also stopped long enough to share with Long Island Weekly his top glam rock albums. BOOK REVIEW

Grabbing You By The Legal Thriller Lapels BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

There’s something to be said about lawyers turned writers able to churn out gripping legal thrillers. It’s a feat well-known authors like Scott Turow and John Grisham have done with aplomb. With A Stirring in the North Fork, Mark Torres might be on that track if his debut novel is any indication. The novice scribe has been general counsel for Local 810 for nearly seven years, a fact that served as a fount of rich source material when he decided to take a stab at writing fiction. Main character Savoy Graves is a blue collar laborer who decides to enroll in law school later in life (like Torres), and, after being wined and dined by a number of white shoe law firms, Graves winds up getting hired by one of these potential

employers. Here, he diligently works before being unceremoniously shown the door when billable hours start taking a downturn. As Graves is reassessing his life, he stumbles across an unsolved murder featured in an old article he found in a pile of newspapers sitting in his apartment building’s laundry room. With nothing but free time on his hands, the unemployed attorney starts an impromptu investigation into an incident that took place four decades prior. While Torres never took part in solving a murder, he used parts of his own back story, in terms of being an older law student and

coming from a labor background as part of Graves’ own personal history. Likewise, the author pulled cultural references from his own Puerto Rican background to inform the makeup of victim Maria Cruz and her own family history. While the book opens with the details of how Cruz is murdered, there is nothing gratuitous about how Torres sets the stage. With the story predominantly taking place in Greenport, the Floral Park scribe introduce facets of class disparity particularly endemic to the Long Island’s East End. And while the narrative may jump back and forth between the past and present, Torres does it in a

way that is easy to follow. Clocking in at 190 pages, A Stirring in the North Fork maintains a fast pace that makes it hard to put down. The author does a stellar job fleshing out the backgrounds of people like retired detective John Conte, and as a frequent visitor to the North Fork, Torres’ details paint a sharply delineated picture in the reader’s mind. His legal background also buffs up the authenticity of the case’s proceedings once federal jurisdiction and its affiliated players are introduced into the story. In the end, A Stirring in the North Fork winds up leaving you wanting more and asking when this labor lawyer turned fiction writer will be back with a follow-up. Visit www.longislandweekly.com to read a full feature on Mark Torres.

DINING IN HUNTINGTON

Taste A Village

F.H. Riley’s

epending on the route, driving northeast toward Huntington takes travelers through tree-lined streets and serene waterfront properties. With sparse storefronts on the way, it’s easy to forget the destination cradles one of Long Island’s finest food hubs. Split north to south by New York Avenue and sliced east to west by Main Street, Huntington Village is home to dozens of restaurants and bars, eclectic businesses, The Paramount and, at times, a desperate search for parking. The town is crowded for a reason—for years, downtown Huntington has staked its claim as the culinary haven on the island’s north shore. It is a town worth touring and eating through—from a cold cheese slice at Little Vincent’s and beyond.

400 New York Ave. 631-271-7600 www.fhrileys.com A stalwart eatery on New York Avenue for 11 years, F.H. Riley’s exudes comfort from doorway to dining room. The bar, helmed by an affable staff, offers an ever-rotating menu of craft and classic beers, fitting perfectly into Huntington’s saloon scene. It’s the eating that brings true ease at F.H. Riley’s. Owner Brett Hughes conceived the menu with fresh ingredients that are handled with skill and prepared to customers’ taste. The appetizer menu features crackling calamari, which is tempura battered and tossed with cilantro Szechuan soy and lime, with a side of sesame ginger aioli. The real standout is the crunchy chicken spring rolls, with buffalo chicken, extra sharp cheddar, scallions and served

VILLAGE from page 6A the mellow coolness crucial to buffalo-style flavors. At Riley’s, the salads are far more than mere side dishes. The restaurant offers 11 specialty chopped salads with 11 housemade dressings. The most popular salads are the autumn harvest and California crunch. The latter has mixed greens, crisp Romaine, endive, golden raisins, toasted pecans, goat cheese, shaved apples and pears and a side of an outstanding buttermilk peppercorn ranch dressing. For an entrée, customers love the herb crusted salmon and chicken Gorgonzola, but the show stopper is the meatloaf au gratin—a veal, pork and sirloin meatloaf wrapped in bacon and baked with blanket of melted swiss provolone and served with chili basting sauce, cream-whipped potatoes, steamed vegetables and Riley’s take on onion rings, Tabasco onion fritz. It’s easy to see why Riley’s remains a popular downtown spot—and why the restaurant has plans to expand to Northport.

French onion sliders go well beyond the typical burger, with Gruyere cheese, caramelized onions and a perfectly unique thyme-roasted garlic aioli. The starter menu boasts free range chicken wings with a sriracha lime BBQ sauce (along with a vegan version), classic poutine with house-cut fries, cheddar curds, green onions and gravy and a decadent mac and cheese. But it’s Vauxhall’s burgers that bring in the crowd. These halfpound custom burgers include the Villager, with tomato jam, bacon and cheddar on a brioche bun; Breakfast Binge, with bacon, cheddar and a sunny side egg; and Evil Sal, with spicy ghost pepper marmalade, onion ring and pepper jack on a pretzel bun. Then there’s the Ramen Burger, with pork belly, napa slaw and spicy yuzu ketchup. go to heaven.’” The Masters is a long course with wide fairways. Currently measuring 7,435 yards, it has, throughout the years, always favored the heavy hitters. And so, the top winners have been Jimmy Demaret, Sammy Snead, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. The tournament came of age once the final rounds were televised and once the charismatic Arnold Palmer began winning titles. In 1960, Palmer birdied the final two holes to win his second Masters crown. The swashbuckler from Latrobe, PA, had single-handedly transformed golf from a

gentleman’s game to one now popular among the rising middle class. But just as Palmer established himself as the game’s top draw, a young Ohioan named Jack Nicklaus came along to surpass even Palmer’s most heroic exploits. Golf’s greatest rivalry saw some of its most dramatic moments at the Masters. The fans loved Palmer, especially when he won his fourth Masters in 1964, but the next year Nicklaus shattered the course record with a jaw-dropping 271 score. It would be another decade before another player dominated the tournament in similar fashion. In 1995, a young amateur named

Tiger Woods was invited by Palmer and Nicklaus to join them in a practice round. In 1997, Woods promptly broke Nicklaus’s 1965 record en route to the first of his four Masters titles. Younger players, armed with superior technology and advanced training, keep coming along. Last year, Jordan Spieth tied Woods’ record and even these numbers will one day be toppled by younger phenoms. One thing that won’t change is the constant pleasure that comes from watching the game’s greatest players perform on the most storied golf course in the world. The Masters is the one constant in an ever-changing world of sports.

very year, the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) holds its legendary Grand Slam of four major tournaments, barometers of who are the finest golfers in the world. And every year, the U.S. Open, the British Open and the PGA Open are played at different sites. Only one tournament, the Masters, is played at the same course every year. There is only one Augusta National Golf Club. Located in a west Georgia town of that same name and purchased in 1931 by Peach State native and golf legend Bobby Jones and his partner, Clifford Roberts, this former indigo plantation, starting in 1934, became the home of the Masters. When he first saw the layout, Jones reportedly exclaimed: “Perfect! And to think this ground has been lying here all these years waiting for someone to come along and lay a golf course upon it.” Which is what happened. The Masters is an invitational tournament that kicks off the Grand Slam schedule every April. And with spring in full bloom, the golf course—with azelas and dogwoods and immaculate fairways and greens—has never ceased to hold the imagination of both players and fans worldwide. Indeed, an invitation to The Masters remains the most prized possession any young golfer any receive. “All of it—the nostalgia, beauty, serenity, history and hospitality—created a mystique around the Masters,” wrote Gil Capps. “When you say ‘the Masters’ to players, they don’t think of an answer, they emote one. Those feelings elevated the Masters to a pedestal of importance explained best by Dave Marr: ‘At my first Masters, I got the feeling that if I didn’t play well, I wouldn’t
