The Port Washington Chamber of Commerce and the Town of North Hempstead will be presenting the 24th annual HarborFest Dock Day and Craft Festival on Sunday, June 1. All events officially begin at 10AM at the Town Dock, Baxter Pond and lower Main Street. Admission is free and there will be free parking at the train station and Manorhaven Park. The Admiral Sponsor of HarborFest is Anton Community Newspapers. A juried Craft Show, sponsored by the Knickerbocker Bay Club, will feature approximately 100 quality craftspeople. The booths will be located along lower Main Street, near the Town Dock. Another attraction along Main Street is “Art In The Park” organized by The Art Guild. It features local artists displaying their work in Sunset Park, along the Manhasset Bay waterfront. They will also have a free Plein Air Workshop for adults at 1:30PM and a free Clay Workshop for children at 12PM. Button Making will be offered throughout the day. As soon as you enter the dock, look for the Chamber of Commerce booth and the Town of North Hempstead booth near the entrance. Both locations will be giving out free reusable shopping bags for all your HarborFest purchases and future shopping. The Chamber’s bags are sponsored by the Port Washington Water Taxi, and additional bags have been donated by King Kullen and Stop & Shop. Everyone is excited that the 80’ schooner SoundWaters will return to Manhasset Bay for HarborFest. On Saturday, May 31, the SoundWaters will depart the Town Dock for a Sunset Sail from 6 to 8 pm. PORT HARBORFEST GUIDE - ANTON COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS - MAY 21 - 27, 2014

Family Fun Day At HarborFest On June 1

The fun begins early for the 24th annual HarborFest Dock Day on Sunday, June 1. At 10:00 AM, the Parent Resource Center will open the Family Fun Park on the Town Dock, sponsored by Inform Fitness. There will be activities and entertainment all day, plus more fun at the Model Boat Regatta in Baxter’s Pond, and children’s workshops at Art in the Park in Sunset Park and along lower Main Street. The Parent Resource Center will have four fun inflatables as well as crafts and carnival games in the Fun Tent, all sponsored by Dr. Mindy Pediatric Dentistry, Frankie’s Carnival Time, NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation, Peter & Jeri Dejana Family Foundation, Petland Discounts and Port Pediatrics — Dr. Sania Wilkins. The Science Museum of Long Island will offer hands-on fun with a touch tank and other local organizations and businesses will have activities, sports and crafts so the kids will never get bored! The Fun Park also features free family entertainment all day on the Family Fun Stage. The children’s entertainment will kick off at 10:00AM with Mrs. Meltzer’s Kindergarten class saying the “Pledge of Allegiance” and

singing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and “America the Beautiful.” At 10:10 AM, Port’s own Hannah Ericsson and Sophia Schleibeler will sing “The Star Spangled Banner.” Then at 10:15, the much anticipated Talented Kids of Port Washington Show will begin. After the Talent Show, at 12:30PM, students from the Olga Berest Dance Studio will give a performance. At 2:00 PM, iSchool of Music & Art and Bach 2 Rock will present “The Bands of HarborFest.” The Family Fun

Stage is sponsored by Diane’s Place Hair Salon, Healthy Kids Pediatrics, Little Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, Roslyn Savings Bank — a Division of New York Community Bank, the Sands Point Center for Health and Rehabilitation and the Vincent Smith School. Adding to the excitement at HarborFest is the opening of the Treasure Chest. Children who participate in the two-week long HarborFest Treasure Hunt get chances to win

one of many prizes donated by local merchants. Of course, all children will be winners – even the consolation prizes are great! The Treasure Hunt is sponsored and organized by Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty with major sponsorship from Massage Envy and Uncle Giuseppe’s. (Kids — the secret words are: “One if by land, two if by sea, I’ll say ‘please’ for a chance for a key.”) One of the most exciting things for kids of all ages will be the demonstrations of the Port Washington Fire Department’s new Fire Boat. They will be in Manhasset Bay, near the Town dock, for the demonstrations. If you want a taste of nostalgia, the whole family can catch a free ride on the North Fork Trolley, sponsored by the Greater Port Washington BID. The Trolley will serve as one of the shuttles to take people between the train station and the Town Dock. The HarborFest Model Boat Regatta features pontoon-style boats made by third-graders from recycled materials. Registration will be at Baxter’s Pond and will begin at 9:30AM for Manorhaven and St. Peter’s, at 9:45AM for Sousa and

Benefactors are the Nautical Advisory Committee of the Port Washington Public Library and the Manhasset Bay Sailing Foundation. Major sponsors are the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club, North Shore Yacht Club, Port Sailing School and the Port Washington Yacht Club. Additional financial support is received from many Chamber of Commerce members. For the artistically inclined, Art In The Park will have a special free workshop for children called “Fun With Clay” beginning at 12PM. They will also have button making all day. Art In The Park is sponsored by The Art Guild. Kids and their families can take a cruise aboard the beautiful Charles II. This boat serves as Port Washington’s own Water Taxi and is offering special cruises around Manhasset Bay

throughout HarborFest. This year’s school environmental educational project is called “Birds of Port Washington” A special exhibit about the project will be on display in the Enviro-Expo. The project is sponsored by wit & whim. Children and their parents can pick up free reusable shopping bags at the Chamber of Commerce booth and the Town of North Hempstead’s booth near the dock entrance. The Port Washington Water Taxi sponsored the Chamber’s bags and King Kullen and Stop & Shop donated their own bags for the event. Port Views By PortViews Photo Exhibit at Tugboat Museum BY DEBBIE GRECO COHEN

editorial@antonnews.com

Whether from the shoreline or while on a boat, residents and visitors can’t help but appreciate the spectacular beauty of Port Washington and its magnificent bodies of water. While many take snapshots all around town, few capture details of Port’s nuances like Sandy Jo Hyman and Stan Strauss. Twelve of the thousands of their photographs of Port Washington will be on display in the “Port Views by PortViews” photo exhibit. Hyman has been fascinated with photography since high school. Born with visual challenges, her ability to capture intense and varied light and texture in her photographs compensates for her lack of depth perception. Hyman’s message to everyone is to never take visual acuity or surroundings for granted. Each is truly a gift. Share that gift with others every day. Hyman has been a member of multiple photography and artistic organizations, including TAG (The Art Guild), and Past President of PCLI (Photography Club of Long Island), both of which are based here in Port. Her images were selected for the covers of two recent editions of the Chamber of Commerce’s Try Port First. She has lived in Port Washington for 25 years and has displayed her photographs in many shows, including a recent one with Strauss at the Port Washington Public Library. Strauss has been seriously devoted to photography for over 40 years. He feels his approach to photography is best explained by renowned nature photographer Ansel Adams, “Photography is more than a medium for factual communication of ideas. It is a creative art.” And, “You don’t take a photograph, you make it.”

Strauss is also a member of many photography and art organizations, including TAG and PCLI. His attitude about his photographs is that they require no explanation and that subject matter, composition and use of light should provide all the information the viewer needs. As luck would have it, Hyman and Strauss met online through their mutual interest in photography about two years ago. Strauss moved to Port Washington when he and Hyman married on Mother’s Day, May 12, 2013. Selecting only 12 images of Port Washington to feature in the photo exhibit was a hard task. Hyman, in particular, has taken thousands of outstanding photos throughout the community over the past 25 years. Her PortViews Photography logo inspired the title of this exhibit. The Pride of Cow Bay Nautical Museum, which looks like a bright red tugboat located at the Town Dock, will present a selection of Hyman’s and Strauss’ photographs in the “Port Views by PortViews” photo exhibit. Sponsored by Sandata Technologies and The Training Station Athletic Club, the exhibit will be unveiled on June 1st as part of the 24th annual HarborFest celebration. Be sure to visit the exhibit while at HarborFest or afterwards. The exhibit will be on display until next year’s celebration and is always “open” since the photos are viewed through the museum’s portholes and rear windows. For details call Bobbie Polay 883-6566

PORT HARBORFEST GUIDE - ANTON COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS - MAY 21 - 27, 2014

Third Graders Build Sailboats for HarborFest Regatta

Don’t miss this year’s 18th annual HarborFest Model Sailboat Regatta for Third Graders on Sunday, June 1 at Baxter Pond in Port Washington! Race Day Registration times at Baxter Pond for participants are as follows: • Manorhaven & St. Peter’s, 9:30am • Sousa & Daly, 9:45am • Guggenheim & Salem, 10:00am The first elimination heat will take place at 10:15AM with the final heat slated for 11:30AM. The awards ceremony takes place shortly thereafter. The Regatta is an exciting part of the HarborFest 2014 celebration where third-graders make and sail their own pontoon-style boats made with recycled materials. All third-graders who register on race day morning will have a chance to win. The Regatta school instruction chairpeople are Arlene Kase and Marian Weissman. They, along with many capable volunteer instructors, will have met with over 400 third-graders at all of Port’s elementary schools to show them how to make their boats. Empty milk or juice cartons are transformed into

pontoons. Paper sails and plastic bags are turned into sails. Wooden dowels serve as masts and booms, and slats of wood act as keels to keep the boats sailing upright and straight.

Port Washington

Bill Palafox is the chairman of the race day committee. On June 1, the children will compete against other “skippers” from their schools, with the winners of these rounds racing against

other schools. Awards will be given for overall race winners as well as the Team Spirit Award to the school with the highest percent of participation in the Regatta. The first 200 children to register for the event will receive T-shirts, compliments of the Tepper Intergenerational Program of the Port Washington Public Library Foundation. Benefactors for the event are the Nautical Advisory Council of the Port Washington Public Library and the Manhasset Bay Sailing Foundation. Major sponsors are the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club, North Shore Yacht Club, Port Sailing Center and the Port Washington Yacht Club. Additional financial support is received from many Chamber of Commerce members. The Regatta was created to fire kids’ imaginations and give them the challenge of creating something themselves, seeing their creation in action, all while learning the principles of buoyancy and sailing. It is also a great way for them to begin to develop a lifelong appreciation for the water as well as helping them develop team spirit. Best of luck to all of the racers!
