Heishman’s Mill is a historic water power mill along the Conodoguinet Creek in Cumberland County listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Operated by Friends of Historic Heishman’s Mill (FHHM), this Pennsylvania 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation
is committed to increasing public access to the Conodoguinet Creek Water Trail at the mill and insuring the ongoing preservation of the mill and dam through educational programs. On Saturday, June 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the FHHM is hosting a “Spirit of Schimmel” history day. The free event will take place at the mill, located at 1206 Creek Road, Carlisle, Pa.
Billed as the “Spirit of Schimmel Wood Carving Expo” the mission of the event is to educate the public on the legacy of Wilhelm Schimmel, one of the nation’s most renowned folk artists. Schimmel (1817-1890) was a German speaking immigrant who spent over 20 years in Cumberland County roughly between 1869 and 1890.
In the 1870s, the mill was owned and operated by John

Telephone Collectors International Will Hold Annual Gathering On June 14
The Telephone Collectors International (TCI), a nonprofit educational and historical association that is the largest of its kind in the U.S., will hold its annual meeting this year in Lancaster, Pa., on Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14. The annual meeting brings together telephone hobbyists from across North America. Attendees bring items from their collections for demonstrations and learn from each other about telephone history and about how to restore and maintain telephone equipment produced since the telephone’s invention in 1876.
The TCI annual meeting is open to the public on June 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The location is the Farm & Home Center at 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, Pa. More information can be found by visiting the group’s website at www. telephonecollectors.org under “Shows & Events.”
One emerging area in keeping old telephones alive is adapting them to the internet age with voice over IP (VoIP). Part of the exhibit space will be dedicated to “Switchers Corner,” where members will demonstrate various communications and dialing techniques among equipment from different eras, all interconnected with VoIP. Exhibitors will also be able to call TCI members around the country and the world, who have set up antique equipment with compatible adapters on the internet over a virtual private network.
There have been some historic Corvettes and Corvette dignitaries who have found their way to the Carlisle Fairgrounds in Carlisle, Pa., as part of Corvettes at Carlisle. The father of the Corvette, Zora Duntov has graced the grounds, and thousands of his Corvette creations have done the same over the years, but for 2025, his firstborn, a 1953 C1 (Engineering Car #3950), has been confirmed to be at the show, taking place Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Aug. 21 to 23. Each year, around 5,000 Corvettes attend Corvettes at Carlisle.
They span all eras and generations of production and come from across the country. Cars and car owners come from far and wide, but never before has one literally served as the springboard for an entire lineage of vehicles thereafter. This Corvette is considered to be the very first one to ever roll off the Corvette assembly line, but how did it find its way to Carlisle?
For decades, automotive historians believed the first two production 1953 Corvettes had been destroyed shortly after their manufacture, a narrative long accepted

A major activity at the meeting is buying and selling telephone equipment, parts, and related material to build collections and keep them running. The public can talk to experts and learn how to add old phones at home, fix ones they have, and connect them to their modern wideband or cellular phone service.
The members who attend
Morphy’s April 30 to May 3 Coin-Op and Antique Advertising Auction held in Las Vegas, Nev., offered collectors nearly 2,000 lots of high-quality arcade, music and gambling machines, as well as exceptional antique signs from businesses and products of a bygone era. The lively, well-attended sale totaled more than $3.5 million, inclusive of buyer’s premium.
The king of the jungle also became the king of Las Vegas during the highlight-packed
third day of the series, as a ca. 1904 Mills “Lion Lung Tester” made its formidable appearance on the auction block. Standing 103 inches tall, the iconic coin-op machine distinguished by its deeply-carved three-dimensional image of a lion with a fearsome expression and mouth agape was well known to collectors. Twenty-four years ago, it was chosen to grace the front cover of the inaugural issue (March 2001) of the “Coin Operated Collectors Association’s COCA Times”
magazine.
The machine’s action is thrilling to watch. When a penny is deposited, the giant cat’s eyes illuminate, and when a patron blows into the tester, the beast emits a spine-tingling roar. A continuously-running clock displays how many seconds each player can keep the lion roaring, hence an assessment of how strong their lungs are. The auction example is believed to be one of only two surviving machines of its type, with a line of documented ownership going back more than 50 years. It made its auction debut in fine style, selling within its lofty

estimate range for $184,500. A rare ca. 1900 Mills Novelty Co. Violano Vir tuoso was described in the auction catalog as one of fewer than 20 known to exist. Presented in its quartered-oak cabinet with fine tiger-striping and an Art Nouveau bow-front window, this musically-gifted entertainer had been fully restored at some point in its past. It conveyed with all of its keys and six musical rolls, selling within its estimate range for $79,950. Anyone who has ever vis ited Chicago’s bustling central business district would have been amused by an outstanding ca. 1900 reversepainted glass sign advertising C.P. Kimball & Co., Carriage Builders, Michigan Avenue. It featured a large, impressive graphic of a quaint, early horse-drawn coach with well-dressed passengers, and additional depictions of the company’s manufacturing facilities. It was graded a condition 9.0 and sold for $54,120 against an estimate of $4,000-$10,000.
The Yuengling’s Beer, Ale & Porter single-sided self-framed tin sign, ca. 1900, Pottsville, Pa., depicting an eagle graphic at center and measuring 23.5 inches diameter, condition 8.0, sold above high estimate for $15,990.

the most outstanding signs in the sale was the ca. 1910 advertisement for Kemp & Burpee’s (Syracuse, N.Y.) Success Manure Spreader. The main image depicted the farm implement in use, adorned by

Mm-mm good! The product that would single-handedly launch the pop art movement, Campbell’s Tomato Soup, was colorfully presented in a 12-inchhigh, single-sided porcelain thermometer that had survived many decades in working order and outstanding condition. An all-American advertising piece that was AGSgraded 93 and certified #11976, it served up a winning bid of $45,510 against an estimate of $20,000-$30,000.
A ca. 1900 Yuengling’s Beer, Ale & Porter single-sided self-framed round tin sign was a classic representation of the famed Pottsville, Pa., brewery. The artwork at its center depicted a mighty eagle atop a rocky summit, protecting a barrel of Yuengling’s brew. Measuring nearly two feet in diameter and graded a condition 8.0, it surpassed its high estimate to settle at $15,990. Another popular entry was a ca. 1900 embossed tin sign advertising Kabo Corsets with the phrase “Kabo Corsets Have

About once a year, I end up writing a column about staffing problems at antiques malls. Most antique mall operators rely upon sweat equity from the vendors in order to be open regularly. Every dealer in the mall is expected to take a turn working the counter one or more days a week.
The issue with this approach is how they are trained. In retail, a well trained staff is a primary
goal. Customer service is what turns the dime. All of us can reflect upon a great store employee who perhaps coaxed us to buy something above and beyond what we were thinking. The flip side is the poorly trained employee who has no clue about their job and especially about how to handle the public. The results can be disastrous and, more to the point, can reputationally hurt a mall.
My two stories, no names given, are both true and were witnessed by me in the last two months. First was the mall in southern New Jersey, where two employees (both male) stood at the counter and started playing with and talking loudly about items that customers had brought up to set there while they were still shopping. One item, an electric light, they actually set up and plugged in while the unknowing customer continued to look around. The mall was full and while no one was at the counter at that moment, I would respectfully suggest that having someone
on the floor offering to help guests would have been a better use of their time. No damage was done, but folks... it’s bad manners to play with someone’s stuff. I am not sure they would have liked two grocery store employees coming up and picking up their loaf of bread out of the cart and playing with and talking about it before checking out.
The second story is a bit more insidious and one that sets my teeth on edge every time it happens. Our family was visiting a small co-op in Lancaster County, Pa., and we were the only people in the mall. Two employees were working that day, and they both followed us, never speaking, through our visit. They were not subtle as they stood in other booths with arms crossed staring at us. They followed us through the empty mall until we made our purchases. To add insult to injury, another mall dealer came in while we were waiting to leave and proceeded to grill my youngest daughter as
to what she was doing there-tacky, unneeded and clearly the result of an owner or manager whose paranoia has infected the mall.
I certainly respect the need by mall owners to protect against theft, but this was over the top. If the mall wants to welcome younger buyers, perhaps it needs to stop assuming they are all crooks. And, as an aside, I would be incredibly curious to know what the mall’s security protocol was if they actually saw someone stealing. Were they going to go physically tackle the offender? I somehow doubt that was covered.
So here is my spring rant to the antiques mall owners. Train and supervise your staff. It’s your name and reputation that is at stake!

The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently announced a landmark gift of the René Balcer and Carolyn Hsu-Balcer Inuit Print Collection, which features over 500 relief prints by renowned Inuit printmakers from multiple regions across Nunavut and Nunavik, the semiautonomous Arctic homeland of Canada’s Inuit population. This important collection, gifted to The Met by René Balcer and Carolyn HsuBalcer, is among the strongest examples of Inuit graphic art in the United States. With works ranging from the mid1940s to the present day, it includes major works by some
of the most influential Indigenous women artists in history and will significantly enhance The Met’s collections of Inuit objects. The Balcer Collection represents diverse Inuit printmaking methods, including sealskin and paper stencils; monoprints; and carved stone, or stone-cuts, on paper, and features imagery of birds, animals, Inuit peoples, transformative figures, dreams, cosmologies, and hunting scenes.
“We are deeply grateful to René Balcer and Carolyn Hsu-Balcer for this extraordinary gift, which is a leading collection of Inuit masterworks in a U.S. museum,”
said Max Hollein, The Met’s Marina Kellen French Director and Chief Executive Officer. “Mr. and Mrs. Balcer’s dedication to the support of Inuit artists is evident in this magnificent and comprehensive collection that celebrates the remarkable artistry of Native and Indigenous individuals and communities, and we are thrilled to be able to share these prints with visitors in our American Wing galleries.”
René Balcer began collecting Inuit art in Montreal, Canada, in the late 1970s. The Ren√© Balcer and Carolyn Hsu-Balcer Inuit Print Collection highlights the famous artists’ collective and printmaking studio at Baffin Island’s Cape Dorset, the source of Inuit printmaking that was established in the 1950s. The original artists working at Cape Dorset collectively identified as the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative, and in 1960 they released their first official catalogued collection of 41 prints to great critical acclaim. The René Balcer and Carolyn Hsu-Balcer Inuit Print Collection includes some of the most celebrated Inuit artists associated with
the collective, such as Jessie Oonark (1906-85) and Kenojuak Ashevak (1927-2013), whose print “The Enchanted Owl” (1960) was featured on a commemorative Canadian postal stamp in 1970 and was on view in The Met exhibition “A Decade on Paper: Recent Acquisitions, 2014-2024” (Aug. 26, 2024-Feb. 23, 2025). Looking ahead, select works in the Balcer Collection will be included as part of ongoing annual rotations in the Art of Native America installation in the museum’s American Wing.
“This is an aesthetically and culturally significant gift, and it has been an absolute pleasure to work with René Balcer and Carolyn HsuBalcer in our mutual goal to more strongly represent Inuit artists in The Met collection,” said Patricia Marroquin Norby (P’ urhépecha), associate curator of Native American Art in the American Wing.
“The arrival of this beautifully curated collection aligns with our departmental vision to prioritize previously underrepresented artists and the presence, voices, and experiences of peoples and communities

Acclaimed American artist Minnie Evans (1892-1987) once described her drawings, filled with human, botanical and animal forms, as coming from “the lost world,” referring to “the nations destroyed before the Flood.” After her grandmother died in 1934 and the visions she had been experiencing since childhood became stronger, Evans went on to produce a large and celebrated body of work and in 1975 became one of the first Black
artists to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. Though she was lauded in her lifetime, she has not been the subject of a major exhibition since the 1990s. Inspired by its growing collection of her work, the High Museum of Art is organizing “The Lost World: The Art of Minnie Evans,” a nationally touring retrospective that brings together more than 100 of her fantastical drawings and puts them in the larger context
of her extraordinary life. After premiering in Atlanta, Ga., this fall, the exhibition will travel to the Whitney in 2026.
“The High is blessed with an unparalleled collection of Southern, self-taught art; including what is likely the foremost public collection of Evan’s work. Given that, we’re uniquely positioned to organize this tour and bring renewed attention to her important legacy,” said the High’s director Rand Suffolk. “Her work is captivating, layered with symbolism, and striking in its detail. Atlanta shouldn’t miss this retrospective and the opportunity to learn more about her fascinating life.”
Presented chronologically, “The Lost World” will begin with Evans’ spare, line-driven compositions of the 1930s and continue through to her colorful, complex compositions and lush, utopian mandalas of the 1960s. The exhibition will be accompanied by a multi-authored catalogue that convenes a range of perspectives on Evans and includes full color illustrations of her work, making it the first such major record of her accomplishments. Both the catalogue and the exhibition will explore how the forms and motifs in Evans’ drawings stem from not only Christian iconography, ancient mythology and visionary creativity, but also her Caribbean heritage and her work as gatekeeper of Airlie Gardens in Wilmington, N.C. In addition to her drawings, the exhibition will present historical photographs of Airlie Gardens and other archival material, including footage of Evans speaking about her work. The exhibition will thus broaden Evans’ “lost world” to include not only the fantastic revelations from her visions but also the constellation of social and historical circumstances that shaped her into the remarkable artist she became.
“The number of deserving self-taught artists who merit serious exhibitions is overwhelming,” said Katherine Jentleson, senior curator of
American art and Merrie and Dan Boone curator of folk and self-taught art, “but Evans rose to the top of list for me because of the way that the work has been appearing in larger American, modern and contemporary art exhibitions, especially those reappraising legacies of Surrealism through feminist and Afro Diasporic lenses. There needed to be a standalone Evans show that will give her expanding audience an appreciation of the true scope of her brilliance and relevance today.”
“The Lost World: The Art of Minnie Evans” will be presented in the Special Exhibition Galleries on the second level of the High’s Stent Family Wing.
“The Lost World: The Art of Minnie Evans” is organized by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. This exhibition is made
Minnie Evans (American, 1892–1987) titled this work “Dream— Nov. 1968,” 1980; it is an oil, pencil and crayon on paper from the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, purchase and gift of Carl and Marian Mullis.

By Karl Pass Open to visitation one day per year, the Sacred Oak in Oley, Pa., will be available to be seen on Saturday, June 7. A chinkapin oak of unknown precise age, yet widely believed to be 500-plus years old, and over 20 feet in girth is among the most famous trees in the state and stands on private land off Friedensburg Road in Oley Township, Berks Co.
Representing a success story in how public and private partnerships can work, the tree, with ropedoff trunk to avoid human contact, is only available for the public to visit, present day, on one designated day a year by the township. The public hours will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine. To learn more, the public is encouraged to contact the Oley Township office.
On May 16, Heritage Auctions continued to prove its strength in the American Art category with back-to-back curated events that together netted $12.18 million. The American Art auction, anchored by significant works by Norman Rockwell, Maurice Sendak and Ernie Barnes, saw just over 40 lots go before nearly 500 bidders to land at $5.105 million. Just following it, Heritage’s second session of property from the BSA Settlement Trust, led by works by Rockwell, Dean Cornwell and Joseph Csatari, saw just over 180 lots hit the block in front of 663 bidders to bring $7.08 million. The first saw new auction records for Charles Wysocki, Auldwin Schomberg, Peter Fillerup, James Lewicki, Bill Morrison and Jeff Segler. A high profile record was set for a work by Maurice Sendak, for his original and first drawing for 1963’s “Where the Wild Things Are,” which sold for nearly twice Sendak’s previous record and hit $625,000. The two sessions also saw the solid sales of 13 important Norman Rockwell paintings, including his 1932 “Saturday Evening Post” cover art “Marionettes,” which sold for $906,250; his 1972 painting
for a Brown & Bigelow calendar painting “Can’t Wait,” sold for $1.310 million; and his 1958 Brown & Bigelow artwork “Mighty Proud,” realized $1.125 million. A spectacular

Norman Rockwell’s original 1972 painting for a Brown & Bigelow calendar painting “Can’t Wait” sold for $1.310 million.
1935 “Saturday Evening Post” cover by Rockwell’s peer Joseph Christian Leyendecker titled “Diving In” sold for $325,000.
“The energy was undeniable from the moment the first lot opened,” said Aviva Lehmann, Heritage’s senior vice president of American Art. “What we saw on Friday was genuine enthusiasm from bidders who were deeply engaged, well-informed and ready to compete. The strong results across both auctions reflect not just the strength of this category for Heritage but also a real passion for the stories these works tell. It was a thrilling day for American Art.”
Works by painting master and former professional athlete Ernie Barnes did well with the sale of seven of his prime paintings and drawings, including a handful from the sports-themed collection of John Mecom Jr., the one-time
city lot, sold for $450,000; his “Opening Ceremonies” (1984), with its panorama of communal elation at the start of the Olympic Summer Games, sold for $237,500; and his “Anchor Leg” (1983), which captures the moment of a group of relay-race sprinters’ last explosive burst across the line, sold for $225,000.
Aside from the new Sendak record, the artist records set included Peter Fillerup’s 1984 bronze figure

The open portion of the TCI meeting is a family event to learn about old crank phones, rotary dial phones, no-dial phones that connected directly to switchboards, and payphones.

Greider who also had a sawmill, a very likely source of scrap material for carvings. Schimmel is known to have spent time in the summer kitchen across the road from the mill and in the covered bridge a short distance downstream from the mill. Schimmel created mostly animals, such as roosters and eagles. Through 19th-century published newspaper accounts and arrest reports, it is known he was an itinerant tramp who was routinely involved in altercations. Far from a glamorous figure, it is not the lifestyle or man himself under a microscope, but his lasting wooden carved and painted creatures left behind. With his life upended by alcohol abuse, he died in the county almshouse in 1890. Never signed, hundreds of folk carvings attributed to Schimmel have survived. Countless more have been destroyed or lost through generations. Today, every major American
art museum has an example of an attributed Schimmel carving, including the Cumberland County Historical Society.
A great grandson of the last operating miller, Randy Heishman purchased the mill in 2019 from Preservation Pennsylvania. A Schimmel enthusiast, Heishman hopes the event will become an annual tradition. Craftspeople who will be set up displaying and selling their work will include Paul Hoch of Carlisle, Jim and Joan Hiser of Carlisle Springs, Andy Van Brookhoven of Lititz, and Dan Strawser Jr. of Tennessee, among others. A food truck will be on-site. A display of numerous contemporary Schimmel-influenced carving will be available for purchase. These will include folk carving by Rodney Boyer, Carl Snavely, Jonathan Bastian, Walter and June Gottshall, Phil Gottshall, Dierwechter, and others.

as fact. However, following a dedicated 20-year search by enthusiasts Corey Peterson and John Amgwert, this long-standing myth has been definitively shattered.
Peterson and Amgwert began their investigation after identifying inconsistencies in the official historical record. Convinced that these early Corvettes may still exist, their research spanned over two decades and multiple states. In 2023, their perseverance culminated in a landmark discovery: a vehicle stored in an Oklahoma restoration shop, initially suspected to be the second Corvette ever built.
Subsequent meticulous research and documentation
confirmed something even more extraordinary; the car in question was not the second, but in fact the very first production 1953 Corvette ever assembled. The find instantly rewrote Corvette history, offering new insights into the genesis of America’s iconic sports car.
“We always believed the cars were out there somewhere,” said Corey Peterson. “Confirming that we had located Corvette #3950, the very first production model, is beyond what we could have imagined. We are thrilled to share this incredible discovery with the Corvette community at Carlisle.”
Throughout Corvettes at Carlisle weekend, attendees will have the rare opportunity to view the car up close. In addition, Peterson and
Amgwert will be on hand to discuss the details of their discovery, offering presentations and Q&A sessions that chronicle their two-decade search and the research that led to this historic moment.
Don’t miss this unparalleled celebration of America’s sports car. It’ll be centrally located for all to review: parked on the stage, adjacent
to the Midway and grandstand. Gates open at 7 a.m. daily, kids 12 and under are free of charge, and students and military (with valid in-person ID) are eligible for discounted admission too.
