Frick Announces Gift Of Rare 18th-Century Du Paquier Porcelain

FRIDAY OCTOBER 21, 2016 • VOL. 47, NO. 43

Important Abraham Lincoln Auction Sets Records

The Frick Collection is delighted to announce a gift from Paul Sullivan and Trustee Melinda Martin Sullivan of porcelain produced by the Du Paquier Porcelain Manufactory in Vienna. The Sullivans generously permitted the Frick to choose 14 superb examples from their collection, considered to be the finest private collection in the world from this important early Western manufactory. The objects, dating from about 1720 to 1740, perfectly complement the museum’s porcelain holdings, which have grown since Henry Clay Frick’s day to represent in depth some of the best productions of this prized material. Mr. Frick focused his porcelain collecting on Sèvres, which accompanied beautifully the 18th-century

A Lincoln Signed Carte-de-Visite Sells For Record $175,000 The 1852 medal honoring Secretary of State Henry Clay – struck by the U.S. Mint in nearly 30 ounces of solid California gold and passed down through his family – sold for $346,000 to lead a recordsetting special auction of memorabilia relating to Abraham Lincoln at Heritage Auctions on Sept. 17. The event’s $2.4 million finale was a joint endeavor between Heritage Auctions and The Rail Splitter, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the respected publication for enthusiasts of Abraham Lincoln and related memorabilia. “This was indeed one of the most important Lincoln auctions of the last 50 years,” said Tom Slater, director of Americana Auctions at Heritage. “Never have I been so impressed and amazed at both the quality of the material and the passion of Lincoln collectors from all over the globe.” Top lot honors were claimed by the solid gold medal presented to Henry Clay, a leader Lincoln himself called “revered as a teacher and leader.” Bidding for the 3.5-inch diameter medal opened at the minimum of $75,000. The history behind the medal is as captivating as the design itself. In 1966, his collection of Chinese porcelain was augmented by some 200 pieces through the bequest of his son, Childs. The museum’s holdings were further extended by recent and promised gifts of Meissen porcelain from Henry Arnhold. Now, the Sullivan’s gift of Du Paquier porcelain adds to the Frick’s already strong assemblage, which illustrates the Western fascination with Eastern models and represents the brilliant and distinctive tradition of porcelain production in Europe. These stunning works are on view in the Frick’s Reception Hall, remaining there through March 2017. For more information, call 212-547-0710.

A perfectly signed carte-de-visite card image of a thoughtful Lincoln set a world record for an image of its type after seven bidders pushed the selling price to $175,000. The 1862 card carried an inscription on the back by Presidential Secretary John Hay certifying its authenticity. The most intimate of keepsakes, relics and memorabilia relating to Lincoln’s personal life and that of those closest to him also brought record-setting prices. One of the most highly anticipated lots was a love letter from Lincoln to his first fiancée, Mary Owens, which sold for $137,500. Mary Todd Lincoln’s jet Continued on page 2

The Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates Variety Auction, held Aug. 27, was a success by all accounts and generated strong prices in multiple categories. Bidding was intense throughout the long day, with nearly 3,000 registered bidders participating. Plan For Your Stuff It’s All About The Money

I talked last time about the importance of being honest with yourself about selling your collection and what your priorities are. For now, let’s ignore priority number four, or rather, the no-priority, “I don’t care folks. Over the next few columns, let’s focus on the other common priorities, and let’s begin with money. It’s perfectly acceptable to make your top priority to squeeze every last dime out of your collection, whether for

your own retirement or for the benefit of your heirs. If this is your goal, then you have a couple of hurdles to get over to give you the best chance of success. Firstly, as I mentioned last time, you have to emotionally divorce yourself from your antiques. No doubt you have many fond memories embedded in those objects, and the good news is that those memories are yours to keep forever. The objects, however, are now simply commodities, tangible goods you desire to sell in the manner that maximizes your return. It’s the cold, hard reality, and the sooner you get to that mental place, the better. Sometimes it’s not easy. If you’re having a particularly hard time, perhaps try packing up some of your favorite things and putting them in storage somewhere. Learn to live without them for a while, and then perhaps selling them will be easier. Next, your perception of the value of your collection needs to be appropriately

To put it another way, if the “best auction house in your collection category averages $5,000 per lot in their major auctions, but your collection would average $1,000 per lot, you might look someplace else. Instead, why not find an auction house that averages $700 per lot for your category, where your items can stand out? It’s okay to admit that your ego is involved here, but think of it this way - would you prefer that your collection be the “filler material in a big auction or the cornerstone of a smaller auction? Moreover, when it comes to negotiating terms, which house is likely to give you the best deal? If getting the highest return

There were 80,290 sold for domestic use and 21,198 units sold to foreign markets. This was the first appearance of the “round-fender Jeep that would eventually become the CJ5. The M38A1 was different from the CJ5, having a stronger

chassis and reversed front spring shackles, in addition to the military accoutrements such as standardized GI instruments and a 24 volt electrical system. The M38A1 lasted quite a while in military service. Even after it was replaced by the high-tech Ford M151, the M38A1 could be seen in OD green as late as the 1970s. In all, 101,488 units were produced, some of which went for export.

James D. Julia’s annual August sale truly was unquestionably the “Maine” auction event of the summer. Held Aug. 25 to 28, bidders were presented with almost 1,900 lots of fine and decorative arts, antiques, folk art, Asian articles, and historical buying opportunities. After the hammer fell for the last time, 68 lots realized $10,000 or above. Top lots included Edward Willis Redfield’s “River Decorations,” which realized $148,125; a pair of porcelain plaques by Wang Dafan, which realized $118,500 (more than six times their low estimate); and Fitz Henry Lane’s painting of “New Bedford Harbor,” which realized $296,250. This unsigned oil-on-canvas, housed in an Eli Wilner & Co. frame, will be included in the upcoming Fitz Henry Lane catalog raisonne published by the Cape Ann Museum. Day one of this sales event hit the ground running with over 600 lots of paintings and fine art selections, many featuring Maine artists and themes. Two works by Andrew Wyeth really caught the attention of buyers in this sale. His “River Greys” realized $66,953, and “By The Lower Dam” realized $79,988, nearly four times its low estimate. And Abbott Fuller Graves’ “A Hot Shoe” was another standout, standing tall at $41,475. Julia’s is well known for its leadership with Rockport School paintings, and this sale was no different. Three Emile Albert Gruppe works were the stars in this category. They included his “Gloucester Sunlit Cove-Rocky Neck,” which realized $22,515; “Mending the Nets,” which

Brock Jobe To Speak About Collecting American Antiques

Brock Jobe, American antiquities expert and professor emeritus at the Winterthur Museum, will be the next presenter at Old Sturbridge Village’s 2016 Speaker Series on Thursday, Oct. 27. Jobe, a native of Virginia, earned his undergraduate degree at

Wake Forest University and a master’s degree from the University of Delaware through the Winterthur Program, majoring in early American culture. Jobe is the 2014 recipient of the Award of Merit from the Antique Dealers’ Association of America Inc. Jobe began his career at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, where he assisted with a major conference on Boston furniture. He also held positions at Colonial Williamsburg and served as chief curator for Historic New England (formerly the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities). In 1993, Jobe returned to

Winterthur to serve as deputy director for collections and interpretation. In 2000, he became a professor of decorative arts in the Winterthur Program. The title of Jobe’s talk at Old Sturbridge Village on Oct. 27 is “The Time to Buy: Collecting American Antiques in 2016 and Beyond.” Jobe will provide a look at the antiques trade from the 1950s to the present. He will illustrate how the changes in the price of American antiques follow larger cultural shifts that have redefined this country. Jobe will identify what drives today’s marketplace, where the trade is headed, and why

Dietrich’s cultural collectibles exceeded expectations and soared above preauction estimates. The topselling ethnographic antiquity was a British Colombian Northwest Coast mask (Lot 8340) depicting a bear, which brought $2,800. A Native American carved polychrome Kachina doll (Lot 8341) sold for $2,400. The doll was a fine example of early Hopi ceremonial figures. The Dietrich collection was joined with 350-plus lots of other estate consignments, including an array of porcelain rarities. Fifteen lots of Meissen porcelain were offered. The top lot of the sale was a 28inch Meissen multi-part figural centerpiece (Lot 8251) depicting groupings of Neptune and Amphitrite with cherubs, maidens, and sea creatures. The piece attracted worldwide interest and had the entire staff overseeing phone bids. After a lively bidding bout, the hammer dropped at $43,000. Five pieces of Mintons pate-sur-pate porcelain were offered in the sale, two of which made it into the top ten lots of the evening. A pair of Minton’s Louis Solon decorated pate-sur-pate vases and covers (Lot 8266) were definitely one of the stars of the show. The vases had gilded wreath handles adorned with ribbons, dark blue ground with

white slip, and allegorical figures holding shields against Cupid’s arrows being fired by winged cherubs. The pair had a pre-auction estimate of $8,000–$16,000 and drew in $27,500 at the hammer. A second pair of Louis Solon patesur-pate vases (Lot 8267) sold for $17,000. The pair had looped handles, green ground with white slip, and depicted cherub figures building a playhouse. On the second vase, a chaotic scene showed the structure collapsing on the cherubs. Additional porcelain highlights included two Minton’s pate-sur-pate white on blue tiles ($6,000 and $5,500), a KPM (Königliche PorzellanManufaktur) plaque of “Jesus in the Temple” ($3,250), and an English enameled porcelain plaque decorated with Chinese pheasants ($3,750). A PCGS graded MS63 1907 St. Gauden’s high relief $20 gold coin (Lot 8025) brought $18,000 on Tuesday afternoon. Designed by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, it is considered by many to be among the most collectible of U.S coins. Spatterware china was full of surprises, with a blue and yellow rainbow Thistle pattern cup and saucer set (Lot 8112) selling for $,5,500. The color combination of blue and yellow rainbow is quite rare. A similar green and black rainbow Thistle pattern cup and saucer Lot 8113) brought $2,900. A red spatterware School House pattern plate (Lot 8116) rose above its $800 high estimate and sold for $2,000. Other unforeseen breadwinners included a lot of 15 small decorative articles (Lot 8305) that were estimated at $40-$80. The inclusion of a rare patinated-metal seated Buddha figurine led to fierce bidding competition, with bidders battling it out in the sales room and online until the lot sold for $2,000. Another stunner in the The carved polychrome Kachina doll Asian arts was a beautiful sold for $2,400.

Japanese Byobu six-panel painted screen (Lot 8354). The screen was ornately decorated with extensive detail, illustrating vivid battle scenes and sights of war. The piece stirred up extensive interest, closing at $4,250. To learn more, visit www.bunchauctions.com.

by Maxfield Parrish. Best known for his fantasy landscapes filled with attractive women, Parrish was one of the most in-demand commercial artists in the U.S. during the 1920s. His art appeared in children’s books, such as Eugene Field’s “Poems of Childhood”; magazines such as Life, Colliers, Century, Scribners, and Hearst’s; and ad campaigns for Colgate, Oneida Cutlery, and Wanamaker’s. His fantastical art was captured on posters and in calendars, often featuring the likenesses of Kitty Owen and Susan Lewin. From 1918 until 1934, he provided the illustrations for General Electric’s calendars. In the early 1930s, he decided it was time for a transition and began working diligently on landscape paintings. Parrish’s art was so meticulously colorful that the color Parrish Blue was named after him. He used glazing to achieve vibrant colors and

projected geometric prints onto his works to represent distortion and draping for the clothing of his characters. Parrish would also attach photographic images to his canvas and cover them with clear glaze to produce a threedimensional impression of the painting. Over 25 lots of Parrish collectibles will be in Hake’s Auction #219, including Edison Mazda calendars. Starting with the first one he created for General Electric’s Edison Mazda Lamps lightbulb division in 1918, most years through 1934 are included. Most have full calendar pads, and all of them have been professionally framed and French matted in wooden frames. Parrish’s art accompanying the calendars includes “Dawn and Night Has Fled” (1918), “Primitive Man” (1921), “Egypt” (1922), “The Lamp Seller of Bagdad” (1923), The Venetian Lamplighter” (1924),
