Rago Auctions’ Open House The First Annual On Oct. 16 To Feature A Talk Kempton Antique On Wharton Esherick Show Will Be Held Sculptor And Furniture Oct. 25 Designer Mark Sfirri The Rago Arts and Auction Center will host an open house on Thursday, Oct. 16. It will feature the sculptor and furniture designer Mark Sfirri speaking on “Wharton Esherick: The Reluctant Woodworker” at 6 p.m. The talk will take place during the preview week for Rago’s 20th-Century Decorative Arts and Design Auctions. Wharton Esherick was born in 1887 in Philadelphia and died in 1970 in Paoli, Pa. He was a furniture maker and sculptor who mainly used wood as his medium. In addition to his career as a woodworker, he was a painter, illustrator, block print artist, and architect. His pursuits were inspired in part by his friends, who were involved in the visual and performing arts. Esherick was the unknowing founder of the Studio Furniture Movement in the United States. His influence endures. “Wharton Esherick: The Reluctant Woodworker” will explore the life and work of Esherick as it relates to the development of the studio

furniture movement in the United States. Sfirri will touch on the variety of work that Esherick produced beyond furniture and sculpture, as well as the stylistic changes during his career. Sfirri designs and constructs furniture and sculpture, mostly in wood, incorporating latheturned forms on multiple axes. He studied furniture design under Tage Frid at Rhode Island School of Design, where he received a BFA and MFA. He has lectured and demonstrated his techniques throughout North America and Europe, as well as in Australia and New Zealand. He has written 18 articles on design, technique, and history for a number of craft publications. Sfirri has run the Fine Woodworking Program at Bucks County Community College in Newtown, Pa., since 1981. He has received two national awards: the Distinguished Educator Award in 2010 from the

Renwick Alliance of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institutions and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 by the Collectors of Wood Art. His work is included in 27 public collections, including The Museum of Arts & Design in Manhattan, Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, The Renwick Gallery, The Minneapolis Institute of Art, and The Los Angeles County Museum of Art,

The Haddon Heights Antiques Center To Celebrate Autumn During October The warm, burnished colors of autumn are one of the reasons people love about this season. Fall decorations featuring pumpkins and gourds, scarecrows and cornstalks, as well as spooky witches and ghosts, are always popular. But tastefully decorating with beautiful antiques and vintage items in shades of rust, red, orange, brown, yellow, and green is very artistically satisfying, too. To help and inspire decorators and artists throughout the region, the Haddon Heights Antiques Center in Barrington, N.J., has put together a visual fall feast

In 2011 and 2012, Sfirri presented lectures on Esherick in Fairhope, Ala., where Esherick lived for several influential years early in his career. Earlier this year, he spoke on Esherick at a symposium that was part of the Paul Evans Retrospective at the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pa. constantly have to outbid fellow enthusiasts with deep pockets to own any kind of high grade coin from the birth of this great nation. The same can be said for U.S. currency and related ephemera. These kinds of antiques do not seem to be out of style in the current marketplace. In reality, I think many dealers in the traditional antiques trade have a marketing problem coupled with an identity problem. The lack of any valid definition in regards to the words used is a reflection of this and not the cause. It is unfortunate but one thing I have noticed about older collectors is that they tend to focus on a particular field or kind of collectible and related collectibles. This is the same generation that gave rise to the “super collector. This is why I have the joy of sitting through such high profile auctions composed of

S789447

Speculation reasons aside, can collectors help it if the back of their favorite toy tells them to collect all 12 items contained in the series? Are these mass-produced items any less of a collectible than similar items released 10 years ago and no longer in production? If so, who gets to decide and why? Should the retail value of the item come into question as a result? These are all relevant questions. Furthermore, there are many great categories of antiques right now that are experiencing a revival and influx of new collectors. Can one argue that bottle collecting is no longer a popular hobby? As a fellow antique bottle enthusiast I can assure you that I can think of no previous time in history that I have encountered such high prices on pristine bitter bottles from the early to late 1800s. Even as a collector of classic U.S. coins, I

S688720

Recently there has been an awful lot of talk in the trade about the overall strength of the antiques market. Some have even suggested that the very definition of the word “antique needs to be redefined. I find this interesting since a mutually accepted definition of the term does not seem to exist. Sure we have all come across the traditional definition defined by U.S. Customs that states an antique is generally defined as an object 100 years or older. Then there is the purist’s definition that an antique is any item made before 1830, since that year marked the start of mass production in America. This latter definition was also implied by U.S. Customs in the Tariff Act of 1930. Adding even more confusion to this issue are terms like classic, retro, vintage, and collectible, which have no formal definitions in the field. If we are attempting to redefine what an antique is shouldn’t we at the very least

define what a collectible is? Harry Rinker once defined a collectible as an item made before 1980, but is this definition still valid in an age where Pokemon game card collectors as young as five years old are encouraged to “collect them all? What about creating agreed upon definitions for terms like classic, retro, and vintage? As a lover of midcentury modern furniture I often wonder if these items can be considered retro or vintage. Would classic not apply as well? I can find no true definition of these terms that has been widely accepted by the antiques and collectibles trade. Even I am to blame. I routinely use terms like antique, classic, collectible, retro, and vintage while offering no true definition as to what I am trying to convey. Meanwhile collectors and speculators of modern-day, mass-produced items have long argued that the items they collect should have no less validity than that of items that happen to be older. After all isn’t today’s hip new toy tomorrow’s sought after antique (or is it just classic, retro, or vintage)?

New Book Features Nearly 180 Quilts FromThe Colonial Williamsburg Foundation the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, one of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, will offer an exhibition, “A Celebration of American Quilts, featuring 12 examples that are the best of their type and, as a whole, represent the breadth of the American quilts in the Colonial Williamsburg collection. The exhibition, which will officially open to coincide with the book’s publication, will be on view through May of 2016. The authors, in their closing remarks to the book, comment: “Through the study of quilts, we learn about the evolution of styles and fashion; social, political and economic issues of particular times and places; and the importance of family and community ties. Perhaps their quote from Mensie Lee Pettway, a 20th-century African American quilt

The quilts in the Colonial Williamsburg collection featured in “Four Centuries Of Quilts range from late-16th-century works made in India and the Mediterranean for export to the West to quilts made by widely varying religious and cultural groups in 18th- and 19th-century continental Europe, the United Kingdom, Colonial America and, later, the United States. These latter examples from the 18th- to 20th-century America reflect the multicultural nature of American society and were made by Anglo-American, Amish, Mennonite, Pennsylvania German, African American and Hawaiian quilt makers; they

include boldly colored and patterned worsteds and brilliant pieced and appliquĂŠd works of art and pristine white bedcovers. Exploring such topics as “What is a Quilt?,â€? “Quilt Names,â€? and “Quilting and Society,â€? the book showcases exquisite examples of not only works from the various geographic regions but also of popular designs, including the Mariner’s Compass and Star, as well as pieces in pure white and those in the classic red-and-white motif. Album quilts, “make doâ€? utilitarian styles and quilts made for “show and admirationâ€? (rather than for practical use), are all examined. The book also offers fascinating information about some of the people who created these hand-made cloth masterpieces. The book is 368 pages with 320 color and 54 blackand-white illustrations. The publication of “Four Centuries of Quiltsâ€? was made possible by a generous grant from Mary and Clinton Gilliland and the TurnerGilliland Family Fund of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. To accompany the book,

Destined to be one of the most useful and visually stunning references on quilts and quilting with more than 300 color images, “ Four Centuries Of Quilts: The Colonial Williamsburg Collectionâ€? by noted scholars Linda Baumgarten and Kimberly Smith Ivey with a foreword by Ronald L. Hurst, will be published by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in association with Yale University Press on Tuesday, Oct. 28 ($75). AUCTION SALE BILLS

Thomas Hart Benton’s Epic Mural “America Today” Is On View At The Metropolitan Museum Of Art The exhibition “Thomas Hart Benton’s America Today Mural Rediscovered” celebrates the gift of Thomas Hart Benton’s epic mural “America Today” from AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in December 2012. Missouri native Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) painted the tenpanel mural cycle in 1930-31 for New York’s New School for Social Research to adorn the boardroom of its International Style modernist building on West 12th Street. It was commissioned by the New School’s director, Alvin

Johnson, who had fashioned the school as a center for progressive thought and education in Greenwich Village. Depicting a sweeping panorama of American life during the 1920s, “America Today” ranks among Benton’s most renowned works and is one of the most significant accomplishments in American art of the period. “This exhibition is the culmination of an extraordinary partnership between the Metropolitan and AXA, which donated the mural to the museum and also serves as the exhibition’s sponsor. For this, we are tremendously

grateful,” stated Thomas P. Campbell, director and CEO of the Metropolitan Museum. “The Metropolitan’s presentation of Benton’s great mural will shed new light on this visually and intellectually stimulating landmark in American art of the early 1930s, especially as the museum will display the mural as the artist originally intended it to be seen. Positioning the mural’s new home in the context of the Metropolitan’s diverse collections, the exhibition also tells a unique story rooted in New York’s own cultural history.”

“The Department of Modern and Contemporary Art is thrilled to debut AXA’s great gift of Benton’s remarkable “America Today” mural in the American Wing, where the artist’s expansive vision of life in the United States will resonate deeply with John Vanderlyn’s grand panorama, 19th-century genre painting, and Thomas Cole’s philosophical (Continued on page 18)

The mural “America Today” is by Thomas Hart Benton (American, 1889-1975). Depicted here are city activities with a dancehall from “America Today.” The 1930-31 mural consists of ten panels in total. Image courtesy The Metropolitan Museum of Art, gift of AXA Equitable, 2012.

landscapes, among other treasures,” said Sheena Wagstaff, the museum’s Leonard A. Lauder chairman of Modern and Contemporary Art. “The exhibition will also remind visitors that the key themes of Benton’s mural - the heroic proletariat and modern industry - were greatly significant for artists in a contemporary international context, not only in the United States, but also in Mexico and in France between the World Wars.” “America Today” was Benton’s first major mural commission and the most ambitious he ever executed in New York City. The exhibition demonstrates how the work not only marked a

turning point in Benton’s career as a painter, elevating his stature among his peers and critics, but in hindsight stands out even more as a singular achievement of American art of the period, one that, among other effects, served to legitimize modern mural painting as part of the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Arts Project in the 1930s. Stylistically bold, “America Today” stands midway between the artist’s early experiments in abstraction, signs of which are still evident in the mural, and the expressive figurative style for which he is best known today. Thematically, the mural evokes the ebullient belief in American progress that was characteristic of the 1920s, even as it acknowledges the

onset of economic distress that would characterize life in the following decade. The commissioning of “America Today” also marked an important episode in international modernism; the great Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco was commissioned to paint a mural in the New School at the same time, and the two artists worked on their projects concurrently. The mural went on view on Sept. 30 in the museum’s Erving and Joyce Wolf Gallery in the American Wing, with the exhibition organized into three sections. The first features a large selection of Benton’s studies for the mural, the second presents the mural installed in a facsimile of its original space at the New School, and the

third features related works by other artists, all from the museum’s collection. “America Today” Rediscovered. The keystone of the exhibition, the mural is installed in a reconstruction of the 30by-22-foot boardroom as it existed at the New School in 1931, allowing viewers to experience the mural cycle as Benton conceived it. A highlight of this extraordinary opportunity to view the reconstructed mural in its nearly original setting is the incorporation of elements that were part of the architect

Joseph Urban’s modernist aesthetic for the New School building, such as the black and red color scheme he used for the room. Among the mural’s most distinctive features are the aluminum-leaf wooden moldings, which not only frame the mural but also create inventive spatial breaks within each large panel. When the mural was installed at the New School, these moldings echoed the Art Deco details of Urban’s building design. The ten panels, most of which loom to a height of 7.5 feet, depict a panoramic

sweep of rural and urban life on the eve of the Great Depression. They capture the tension of early modern America, with allusions to race relations and social values, while simultaneously celebrating the themes of industry, progress, and urban life. An array of preDepression types - flappers, farmers, steel workers, stock market tycoons, and others representing a cross section of American life - surround visitors in the mural space and can be further explored in the adjacent galleries, (Continued on page 27)

Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers’Antique And Vintage Paintings Sale Is Scheduled For Oct. 23 Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers will hold an antique and vintage paintings sale on Thursday, Oct. 23, in the firm’s gallery located at 354 Woodmont Road in Milford, Conn., starting at 6 p.m. Eastern Time. The auction will feature 250 works of fine art, spanning many genres. Online bidding will be provided by

Invaluable.com. Offered will be original paintings, sculptures, drawings and fine prints. An expected top lot of the auction is an original work by the noted painter Irving Ramsey Wiles (1861-1948). Titled “The Loiterers,” the painting should realize $150,000-$250,000. Wiles was the primary student of

the master Impressionist William Merritt Chase. “The art market is going through a resurgence and is on its way to a full-blown recovery after the economic downslide of 2008,” said Gene Shannon of Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers. “At every price level, prices are

strong. For example, in our last auction we enjoyed very strong activity in the $2,000$10,000 range. There’s a buoyant optimism out there, and a rising tide lifts all boats.”

Historically, Shannon’s has specialized in American and European art executed between 1840 and 1940. In recent years the firm has expanded more into post-war modern and pop art. “We

have a track record of attracting works that have not been previously on the market in recent history and will continue in that tradition,” said Shannon. (Continued on page 21)

AUCTION SALE BILLS Shannon’s Fine Art (Continued from page 20)

Another strong candidate for top lot honors will be a recently discovered work by Theodore Robinson (185296), an artist who was born in Vermont, raised in Wisconsin, became one of the pioneers of Impressionism in America and spent eight years working and studying in Paris. His rendering of a young girl in a pink dress sitting beneath a tree should make $50,000$75,000.

This original painting by Thomas Waterman Wood (1823-1903) titled “The Kitten” is estimated at $40,000-$60,000.

The sale will feature three paintings by the photorealist Richard Estes (b. 1932), including one of the Brooklyn Bridge that’s expected to fetch $25,000-$35,000. Estes was born in Illinois and studied at the Art Institute in Chicago (1952-56). He then spent 10 years in publishing and advertising in New York and Spain. His work has been exhibited, solo, at the Met in New York City. A painting by Thomas Waterman Wood (18231903), titled “The Kitten,” carries a pre-sale estimate of

$40,000-$60,000. Wood, who was born in Vermont and worked in New York City, is probably best known as one of America’s first artists to find the African American male a suitable subject for portrait and genre painting and to portray African Americans in general with dignity during the Civil War era. A work by Charles Sprague Pearce (1851-1914), titled “Woman With Grapes,” should command $40,000$60.000. Pearce, best known for his portraits and genre scenes, was born in Boston. Mass., and on the advice of William Morris Hunt, the early American Impressionist, moved to Paris to study at the Leon Bonnat School. There, he became friends with John Singer Sargent and other ex-pats. John Leslie Breck’s “The Dragon in Winter” has a presale estimate of $25,000$35,000. Born at sea on a clipper ship in the South Pacific, Breck (1860-99) grew up in the Boston, Mass., area but received his art training in Germany and France. He was an early exponent of the “new painting” avantgarde style of 19th-century Impressionism. A rendering of Venice by the Illinois-born painter Jane Peterson (born Jennie Christine, 1876-1965) should reach $40,000-$60,000. Peterson became famous for a wide range of works, from landscapes to still-lifes. These blended Impressionist and Expressionist movements. Peterson’s life was much more independent and

Garth’s Auctioneers & Appraisers Announces Its Third Annual National Writing Contest writing contest for kids of all ages. The idea grabbed the attention of Jeffers while assisting her daughter with a school assignment. “I remember entering writing contests as a kid and really enjoying it,” explained Jeffers. “And our company is always looking for ways to interest younger generations in the history of material culture. One of the ways we promote collecting to younger audiences is by engaging them in the stories of the objects we sell.” Garth’s staff modified the project into con-

test form with an emphasis not only on the history and research of the objects, but on a creative spirit and embracing an interest in historical objects and storytelling. With a wealth of information related to material culture available on the Internet, in libraries, and in trade publications such as the ones produced by contest sponsors, the contest is a chance to emphasize the importance of heritage, reading, and research, as well as the great fun of doing a writing project. “As the website says,

Don’t miss getting the best bids for any ephemera items you may be auctioning for your clients.

‘The only thing more fascinating than the things we sell are the stories you write about them!,” continued Amelia. “Last year over 300 entries were received from all over the United States, and we even had a few from Europe.” Garth’s encourages folks to visit the site and read the winners work from last year’s contest. They range from an extraordinary piece about a painting, “Portrait of a Young Girl by Martha Walter,” to “The Fateful Flight of the USS Shenandoah ZR1.”

PACM™ gets the word out to ephemera and country store collectors.

Back by popular demand, Garth’s third annual Biography of an Object Writing Contest kicked off on Oct. 1. “The entries last year were tremendous,” commented contest sponsor and founder Amelia Jeffers, president of Garth’s Auctioneers in Delaware, Ohio. With shows like “American Pickers,” “Storage Wars,” and “Pawn Stars” proving that the hunt for rare and special objects appeals to every generation, several leaders in the art and antiques trade have joined together over the last few years to sponsor this

body used, showcasing incompatible patterns or pieces from different periods. These can be easier to spot. Other times you may find that hallmarks aren’t where they’re supposed to be for the piece that’s been created. For example, an early 19th-century sugar bowl would normally have its hallmarks on the side, but a teapot would have them underneath. If a sugar bowl has been converted into a teapot, the marks will either still be on the side or will have been removed, and you could see the difference in patina and wear on that spot. This is one of the reasons why it’s important to know where marks were placed on different types of pieces during different periods. You may also find cases where common plates have been turned into hard-to-find bowl types, like a strawberry bowl. Giveaways are stretched hallmarks and edges that are too thin. Similarly, ordinary, low-value teaspoons are commonly converted into more sought-after types, like fruit spoons or condiment spoons. If a pierced serving spoon has been converted from an ordinary solid serving spoon, it may have rough or sharp edges around the piercings. Removal of engraved initials is another type of alteration that’s pretty common, since some collectors don’t want pieces engraved with a previous owner’s initials. If S862532

Of course, there are always exceptions. A silversmith may have used a creative handle on a mug or cann that normally wouldn’t be used; if authentic, this could make the piece quite collectible. It’s easy to see why a fraudster would want to make a piece give this impression, so it’s important to check with experts who know about the maker and/or pieces of the time period. Hollowware isn’t the only type of silver that can become the victim of such alterations, flatware is also a target. Flatware can be altered in a couple of different ways: a period handle can be put on a later knife blade or other utensil or an authentic, common piece can be changed into a more valuable, rarer piece. An example of the latter case could be a common serving fork with its central tine removed and outer tines twisted, making it appear to be a baked potato fork. A common spoon can be made into an ice cream fork by simply cutting out portions of the bowl. There are many such variations on this theme when it comes to flatware. Help with identification and authentication is available in reputable reference books and online forums. Old manufacturers’ catalogs are also a great way to see if your piece was made in its particular pattern or if it was ever made at all. All photos are property of the author. At a Glance: Signs of altered silver: 1. Proper decoration and shape for the period. 2. Thin edges on bowl or plate. 3. Stretched hallmarks. 4. Added provenance engravings. 5. Piercings with sharp or unfinished edges. Reference books, websites, and collecting groups are the best ways to keep from being fooled by fakes. Here are a few: “The Book of Old Silver: English, American, Foreign by Seymour B. Wyler, Silver-Collector [silver forum] (http://www.silver-collector.com), and “Starting to Collect Antique Silver by Ian Pickford.

Fooled By Fakes you see a slightly flattened spot in an area where engraved initials would typically be, it’s highly likely that a monogram has been removed (along with a bit of silver). You’ll also find the opposite type of alteration, added engravings. Sometimes this could be the addition of a year to an existing engraving so the piece appears older than it is. Other times a desirable coat of arms, crest, or other type of distinguishing mark is added that ties the piece to an important family, elevating its status and giving it provenance - and therefore, a higher value. However, sometimes these changes were made during an earlier period, which means the addition has had time to develop a patina and proper wear. A simple early piece of flatware may have been enhanced with

THREE LOTS FROM TIFFANY STUDIOS BRING A COMBINED $188,300 AT COTTONE AUCTIONS

Three early-20th-century lots from Tiffany Studios, a memorial stained glass window titled “Angel of

Resurrection,” a gorgeous Poppy lamp and a pair of unusual turtleback leaded glass hanging domes sold for a combined $188,300 at Cottone Auctions’ big annual Fall Fine Art & Antiques Auction on Sept. 26 and 27 in the firm’s modern Geneseo, N.Y., gallery. The memorial window was the top lot of the auction, fetching a robust $71,300. The window came directly

from the Church of the Redeemer in Newark, N.J., where it had been originally installed as the “Allison Memorial Window.” Following close behind was the Poppy lamp, which lit up the room for $69,000. The

lamp, 24 inches tall, had an overlay filigree shade, 17 inches in diameter. In third place, but no less impressive than the other two lots, was the pair of leaded glass hanging domes. They changed hands for $48,000. These prices were within

estimates. Much of what was produced by the Tiffany Studios in New York from 1878 to 1933 is today highly sought after by collectors. In total, around 800 quality lots came under the gavel over the course of the two days. In addition to examples by Tiffany, the auction was packed with mid-century modern pieces by major designers in the field, original oil paintings and other works of art, fine art glass creations, sterling silver, lamps and lighting, old clocks and decorative accessories. “We had a nice, broad mix of merchandise for bidders to consider, from modern to folk art and with con-

temporary art glass pieces that ranged from 15 years old to the 18th century,” said Matt Cottone of Cottone Auctions. “We basically stuck to our formula, which is to aggressively seek out the best merchandise from prominent estates and collections, items bidders will really want.” The following are additional highlights from the auction. All prices quoted include the 15 percent buyer’s premium. Internet bidding was facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com and Invaluable.com. Staying in the art glass (Continued on page 26)

Quality Consignment always Accepted

Although participants may select an object from their own interests, local museum, or personal collection, the suggested objects picked by Garth’s staff for 2014 are a pair of George III silver candlesticks, a mid20th-century lounge chair and ottoman by Eames, an 18th-century Sino-Tibetan gilt Buddha figure, a 19thcentury cast iron “Uncle Sam” mechanical bank, a 20th-century Tiffany & Co. scarab bracelet, a 19th-century American painted parcheesi game board, a 1989 “Clenet Coachworks Cabriolet,” and a painting of women making lace by A.G. Warshawsky. Contest sponsors were once again very enthusiastic this year, and new sponsors have been added, which should increase awareness of the contest. Signing on to promote and support the contest this year are four of the top trade newspapers in the country: “Antiques & the Arts Weekly,” “AntiqueWeek,” “Maine Antique Digest,” and “Antiques & Auction News.”

“We are very happy to have their continued involvement, and we are looking forward to the array of entries the contest is sure to produce this year. This is a terrific way to reach a broad audience and hopefully ignite that same passion in others,” commented Jeff Jeffers, principal auctioneer and CEO of Garth’s Auctions. The “Biography of an Object” Writing Contest is open for entries through Monday, Dec. 1, in three divisions: Child (age 12 and under), Teen (ages 13 to 19), and Adult (age 20 and over). Contestants in each age group will vie for a first-prize package valued at over $1,000, which includes a Kindle Fire, an Amazon gift card, and subscriptions to the nation’s top antiques and fine art trade papers. The entries will be judged by an independent panel. For more information about the contest guidelines, prizes, or to obtain a registration form, visit www.garths.com/contest or call 740-362-4771.

which present many of the studies Benton made during his travels around the United States in the 1920s and to which he referred for the mural project. The Mural Studies. The second section of the exhibition, featuring Benton’s studies for “America Today,” illuminates the deliberative nature of his working process. Besides the impressions Benton captured during his travels around the U.S. in the 1920s, the studies on view include character studies in pencil for figures that appear in the mural, as well as painted compositional studies for individual mural panels. Related Works. The final section of the exhibition includes works that relate to Benton’s “America

Today” drawn from the Metropolitan Museum’s Departments of Modern and Contemporary Art, Photographs, and European Paintings. Highlights of this section are other works by Benton; renowned photographs by Walker Evans, Berenice Abbott, and Lewis Hine; and, of particular interest, Jackson Pollock’s “Pasiphaë” (1943). During the time Benton was painting “America Today,” Pollock was his student and served as a model for his teacher’s mural. The inclusion of Pollock’s abstract painting in the exhibition provides opportunities to consider the complex personal and artistic relationship between the two artists.
