operated the coin grading firm NGC (Numismatics Guaranty Corporation), ensuring the company had instant credibility directly from day one. Ironically, CGC would have somewhat humble beginnings, and it would take several years for the concept to permeate through the full collecting community, but by 2003 it was an inevitable juggernaut in the comic book grading field. It was also around this time that collectors started paying what could best be described as insane amounts of money for certain comic books in a high grade that were believed to be scarce. Much like most other third party grading companies, CGC uses a census that shows how many copies were graded and encapsulated within each grade. Since comic books are graded on a ten point scale with the higher number meaning the higher the condition, collectors could see just how many copies of each comic book were graded and recorded. This meant that a speculator market was beginning to appear for any kind of key issue comic book believed to be in a high grade and possibly scarce. The more and more

Regular readers of my column will note that my last two articles were on the subject of third party grading and its impact on the collectibles market. In my first article, titled “Third Party Grading Part I: The Need Arises,” I discussed how the need for third party grading transformed not only the coin collecting field, but branched out into other collecting markets and brought immediate change. In my second article on the topic, titled “Third Party Grading Part II: Exploring the Myths,” I ventured into controversial territory and worked to dispel some of the top myths surrounding third party grading. In this final article in my series I provide an actual account of third party grading from the perspective of the comic book collecting field and discuss some of the positive and negative aspects of its presence. While it should be known that I firmly support the need for third party grading in most collectibles markets there are

opposing opinions just as strong. It is my sincere hope that some of those who oppose its practice will gain useful insight from this series and others new to its discovery will be better informed. With that being noted we begin our journey sometime at the start of this century. Sometime in the year 2000 a unique concept was being launched with surprisingly little fanfare that would change the comic book collecting market forever. It was at this time that the Certified Collectibles Group (a major third party grading company) was beginning to certify and grade comic books. Literally within months of the company’s launch, comic books graded by the Comics Guaranty Corporation (or CGC as it is commonly known) would start to show up for sale on eBay and other online auction sites. With little advertising and a unique concept, CGC was instrumental in proving that the concept of third party grading could be applied to other kinds of collectibles beyond simple objects like coins and sports cards, but the company was also owned by the same company who

Authentic parts are sometimes harvested from otherwise unsalvageable toys or purchased as spare parts and used in an important area (like the windup key or signature sections) to make a piece appear authentic. There are businesses that supply these parts to help collectors make repairs to old toys, but some fraudsters use them to give a fake piece an air of authenticity or to replace

be no question in your mind as to which is which. There are many things to look for in a reproduction, including incorrect measurements of individual parts (including the on/off switch) and the size of the entire piece. Also, the eyes, dial or mouth may be embossed or raised rather than recessed, the three arm joints may each have silver rivets rather than only one at the shoulder, the logo may be parts that should have logos incorrect, the country of or other important informa(Continued on page 7) tion that may be more difficult to reproduce. For this reason, you need to investigate beyond the mark or the key. Lilliput Robots are another very collectible tin toy; some originals can sell for thousands of dollars. Experts say that once you see the difference between an original and a reproduction, there will

S845815

Who can resist smiling when they see antique or vintage tin toys from a bygone time when playthings were simple and didn’t require an Internet connection or complicated instructions? Whether they bring back memories or just evoke an appreciation for the simplicity of yesteryear’s childhood, tin toys are collectible on so many levels. Colorfully lithography and a high “fun factor are two of the things that made tin toys so desirable in their day and such a desirable collectible now. Unlike cast iron toys that were also being made in the early 1900s, tin toys were lighter weight, easier to play with, and easier to carry around. There are far more reproductions being represented as authentic vintage toys today than there were even 10 years ago. When a collectible can bring anywhere from hundreds of dollars to over a thousand dollars, fakes and reproductions are bound to become a fact of life. One well-known vintage toy company whose toys are highly sought after is Lehmann. Just after the turn of the new millennium, some experts had said that unauthorized reproductions and fakes of this company’s toys weren’t an issue, but today reproductions with the original Lehmann mark are being made in China. Somewhat less challenging to buyers are counterfeits being made in Russia because they don’t sport the Lehmann mark, but buyers uneducated in what to look for could still fall prey to them. One thing to look for on an authentic Lehman windup toy is a key attached to the wind-up mechanism; this was done so it couldn’t be lost or separated from the toy. Newer reproductions typically have a separate key. Toys with front wheels can yield another clue, original Lehmann front wheels are metal, whereas Chinese copies are mostly made from plastic. However, a Russian reproduction could have a metal wheel that’s virtually indistinguishable from an original.

without some controversy. By the year 2003 some members of the collecting community became skeptical of comic book grading in general because of the rising number of collectors attempting to profit off the system. It was by this time that “pressing became a very controversial subject within the collecting community. Collectors of other paper based collectibles will note that pressing involves the use of extreme heat and moisture to “press out any defects a collectible may exhibit in order to obtain a higher grade and thus be valued at a higher dollar amount. Since a third party grading company cannot ascertain if a comic book had been pressed or not, it is not noted on the grading label and the item is not listed as restored even in instances where it may be obvious that pressing had occurred. Flash forward to the present day - CGC’s parent company now operates a subsidy that conserves paper collectibles through the use of pressing, along with other services. The overall collecting market has since moved on from this controversial topic, in some ways due to the fact that CGC continues to dominate the marketplace and collector confidence ensues. Still, this topic does still exist in some context and is still seen as controversial in nature by some collectors and enthusiasts. With pressing in full swing,

with a leap of faith, can lead to a success. Since the time of its adoption other companies have entered the third party grading market and started to grade collectibles once thought to be too unconventional for certification. Action figures, toys, and video games are all items that can now be certified and graded by various third party grading companies. These companies owe a high level of gratitude to CGC for breaking through the conventional wisdom that only simple objects like coins, stamps, and sports cards can be graded. In conclusion, whether you are for or against third party grading, one cannot deny the impact it has had on the market. Certified collectibles from across all aspects of the collecting world are setting new records each and every day. Whether it be a rare high grade copy of Detective Comics #27 or a scarce Star Wars prototype, third party grading is here to stay!

it became common for speculators to look for comic books already graded that had the potential to be pressed and resubmitted for grading in hopes of achieving a higher grade. On certain key issue comic books a bump of just one grade level can mean the difference in price of thousands to tens of thousands of dollars in profit. At the same time there is no guarantee that the comic book will be regraded even at the same grade it originally was let alone a higher grade. This has caused naysayers to point out that grading is much more an art than it is a science. Even with the potential for loss there are a growing number of speculators who attempt this feat, and no one can account for any damage that may occur between the original buyers before the item gets to the intended grading company for review. Today, the CGC serves as a prime example as to how an excellent business plan, along

Collector Anecdotes And Antics comic books without having to worry if the book in question was restored. While not completely foolproof, CGC employed some of the industry’s most respected experts at the time and the restoration check was one of the best services the company had to offer. If a restored comic book was noted it would be placed in a separate color coded holder with all restoration clearly noted on the label. This gave collectors confidence that the comic book they were buying was in fact genuine. Unfortunately, comic book grading has its fair share of critics. Unlike a coin, a stamp, or a sports card, a comic book is a three dimensional item meant for reading. Opponents of comic book grading assert that once the comic book is encased in any form of tamper evident holder, which is needed to retain certification, it loses all functionality as a comic book and becomes a commodity whose sole purpose is to be bought and sold. Proponents of comic book grading state that anyone can easily open the tamper evident case without damaging the item inside should they so desire. To this day this debate rages on. With well over two and a half million comic books already certified by CGC at present time, it should be obvious that third party grading is here to stay. Unfortunately, getting to this point was not

CONCEPTS 1 AUCTION HOUSE SELLS FORGOTTEN SHOESHINE BOX FOR $3,390 As relayed to Karl Pass by Lynne Atkins

Lynne and Herb Atkins of Concepts 1 Auction House in Point Pleasant, N.J., sold a one-of-a-kind folk art decorated shoeshine box on May 10 for $3,390. The piece arrived at the auction house with an interesting history: “A man came to us a few days before our May 10 auction. He wanted to get rid of

the boxes his wife had been storing for years. These boxes apparently almost ended up on the curb. They were from the woman’s grandfather, Joe Milone, whose birth name was Giovanni Indelicato. Milone had emigrated from Sicily. He had been a shirt presser in a laundry and also worked as a shoeshine man in the 1940s on the Lower East Side of New York City. He bejeweled and painted a shoeshine stand, a chair and two end tables to draw the attention of potential customers. “During that time period, the artist Louise Nevelson would walk past his place on the way to her studio. She loved the pieces and introduced him to the director of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Milone was part of a show in 1942. He was written up in various New York newspapers, including The Times, The Sun, and The Herald Tribune, as well as in Time Magazine and Harper’s Bazaar.

origin (Japan) may be missing, and the font of the toy name may be of the wrong size or spaced incorrectly. Reproductions boxes are also being produced in large quantities. Many of these are advertised as having the exact size specifications as the originals, as well as sporting the exact graphics, colors and card stock quality. I tried

contacting several of these suppliers to ask if the boxes contained any print stating either the year they were made, the company making them, or anything else to indicate that they’re reproductions, but none of them responded. Literally tens of thousands of these boxes have been sold worldwide. In their advertising, most of these companies/individuals

Right before the hammer came down, Pat bid on the piece and got it! Within a month, she had found a museum to buy it. The Fenimore Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y., purchased the showbox and the accompanying stand and chair. It was reported that the

purchase price was $10,000. The museum will be exhibiting the material beginning on Saturday, Aug. 9.” For further information, interested individuals may call Concepts 1 Auction House at 732-892-6040 or visit www.concepts1 auction.com.

“We had copies of all kinds of great paperwork to give the person who bought this wonderful piece of folk art. It included a handwritten letter by Louise Nevelson and the original press release from MoMA. Also, there was a letter from Mr. Ripley’s Believe It or Not, which stated, ‘Should Mr. Ripley open an Odditorium in the future similar to those he had on Broadway or at the World’s Fair a year or two ago, there would be only very limited

space for the display of oddities other than those owned by Mr. Ripley, but yours has been selected as one of the few suitable for exhibition.’ “I was able to find Queens College writer and folklorist Joseph Sciorra, who had once written about the material. The pieces were thought to have disappeared. The family had moved out of Brooklyn and now the granddaughter lives in Point Pleasant. She was the one who told her husband to try and sell it. “Point Pleasant is a town filled with antique shops. The husband walked into one and spoke with a couple of women who told him, ‘You should probably take it down the road to Concepts 1 Auction House.’ And that is what he did. “On the day of the auction, the granddaughter and her husband, as well as Sciorra, were all there. The woman who had sent him our way, local dealer Pat O’Shea, came to watch it sell, too.

state that their boxes can be used to complete toy displays, which is a good thing, but an unscrupulous reseller can falsely age and/or fade the colors on some of these boxes to make them appear old. It’s always important to network with more knowledgeable collectors and read reliable references to become educated in distinguishing authentic pieces from reproductions and fakes. That

holds true in any field of collecting, but with tin toys, it’s an absolute must. Only through hands-on learning, reading, and talking to experts can you lessen the potential for being fooled by a fake. All photos via Wikipedia. At A Glance: Signs of a reproduction: 1. Small parts, such as wheels, made of plastic instead of metal. 2. Phillips head screws on

early toys. 3. Boxes with bright colors and no signs of age should raise caution. 4. Wrong eye or arm construction on Lilliput Robots. 5. Incorrect or missing logo or country of origin (Japan) on Lilliput Robots. Reference books, websites, and collecting groups are the best ways to keep from being fooled by fakes. The Eighth Annual June Festival Of Antiques In Mullica Hill, N.J. The eighth annual June Festival of Antiques at the Gloucester County Fairgrounds held on June 14 in Mullica Hill, N.J., was once again hosted by The Yellow Garage Antiques. Benefiting the Harrison Township Historical Society, the indoor/outdoor show is held on the second Saturday in June every year. This year’s show featured 62 dealers set-up under the four open-air pavilions, plus 14 additional dealers were outside on the lawn. Showgoers at the 9:00 a.m. opening were greeted with sunny skies, mild temperatures, and a gentle breeze. Attendees were treated to a wide variety of goods from dealers who drove in from as far as Indiana, New York state and Virginia. The show had a good percentage of country Americana, including a vast selection of furniture, fraktur, stoneware, needlework samplers, early lighting, quilts, baskets,

of Royal Port Antiques of Salem, N.J.; Todd Kibler of Country Antiques Two of Mullica Hill, N.J.; Gring’s Antiques of Ocean City, N.J.; and Joan and Larry Frankel of Margate, N.J. Denton, Md. Nancy stated she had a good show, selling from her inventory of folk art, furniture, wallpaper boxes, stoneware and signs. Dealers from Oley, Pa., were well-represented at this year’s event. A 1917 Baccarat Egyptian Perfume Bottle Sells For $38,400 At 26th Annual International Perfume Bottle Association Convention Auction

A 1917 Baccarat, Monne Toute I’Egypte perfume bottle, with cover and inner stopper, clear/frost crystal molded label and black patina, sold for $38,400.

perfume bottles, compacts and other rare vanity items. One of the consignors was the Maharajah of Indore, whose extremely rare 1922 Rosine bottle, Antinea ou au Fond de la Mer or “bottom of the sea,” sold for $18,000. Included among the lots was a very special 1930s Czechoslovakian blue crystal bottle with an Egyptian motif, which sold for $12,000. The biggest highlight, however, was the $38,400 selling price for an exquisite 1917 Baccarat Egyptian bottle presentation. “Even though many of the bottles sold in the thousands of dollars, there were plenty of beautiful items selling in a much lower category,” said Jeffrey Sanfilippo, IPBA presiA 1922 Rosine Antinea ou au Fond de la Mer “bottom of the sea” perfume bottle in silver metal flask form, side rungs strung with red cord, stopper of two-color Bakelite and mother of pearl inset, with cork plug paper labels, sold for $18,000.

Perfume bottle dealers came from as far away as Switzer-land just for the e v e n t . “Walking into the showroom is a magnificent amount of sensory overload with the beauty and charm of these vintage perfume bottles and ephemera,” stated Deborah Washington, IPBA conventions chair. “To have access to this kind of quality and variety of items available for sale is This circa 1930 Czechoslovakian perfume bottle and stopper, blue crystal, dauber, with jeweled and enameled metalwork at neck and all around, sold for $12,000.

a perfume bottle collector’s fantasy come true. We named the convention ‘Bottles that Steele Your Heart’ because we came to Pittsburgh, and here in the showroom and at the convention there were certainly many bottles that did steal your heart.” Other events included a Keynote presentation by local celebrity Anne Madarasz, author of “Glass Shattering Notions” and the Heinz History Museum’s division director. A

fireside chat with Annette Green, one of America’s leading fragrance authorities and co-author of “Secrets of Aromatic Jewelry,” was also offered. Green is currently working on her memoirs,

“Perfume in my Veins.” Marti DeGraff and Toby Mack gave a presentation called “DeVilbiss - Beyond the Catalogs.” Marti and Toby’s book “DeVilbiss Perfume Bottles: 1907 to
