Silver Jubilee Collectibles Find Favor With Collectors On Both Sides Of The Pond

By Amy Gale lizabeth II has been Queen of England for 60 years. Here’s a fact to put that number in perspective: the commemoratives for the Silver Jubilee in 1977 are making their way into antiques and collectibles venues. The plates and cups picked up a few years ago - or, as it turns out, 35 years ago - are now as much a part of the commemoratives market as those made early in her reign, for the Coronation in 1953, and the Prince of Wales’ investiture in 1969. The silver jubilee commemorated the twenty-fifth anniver-

older is not always more valuable. It typically sells for more than the banal coronation model that was made in an edition of 1,000. Coalport also drew on tradition to honor their reserved and dependable sovereign. Their jubilee line included a white and gold covered vase decorated with a view of

sary of the queen’s accession to the throne, in 1952. It was the royal celebration of the decade. There had been minor events - the queen and Prince Philip had celebrated their silver wedding anniversary in 1972, and their daughter, Princess Anne, was married in 1973 but the jubilee was the big one. It was also the last important royal event before the Prince of Wales’ marriage to Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. The jubilee was not, however, merely a practice run for the St. Paul’s show. For commemorative makers, it was the biggest thing to happen since preWorld War II days. Postwar rationing was in effect when Elizabeth and Philip married in 1947. Things were not really back to normal at the time of the coronation six years later. The jubilee gave a boost to the British potteries and other manufacturers, who were, with few exceptions, in the dumps. Commemoratives began showing up at British trade shows the year before the big event. Rare was the firm that did not produce at least one jubilee piece. David Rodgers, a specialist in royal commemoratives, was sarcastic about the slew of jubilee aprons, lighters, and crystal cameos. There was even a jubilee Bible. His remarks were published in the “jubilee

eggs” (the trade term) includes one for the queen’s jubilee: a textured gilt shell opens up to reveal a crown mounted on a prong. Serious collectors, take note: There is also a silver version. Many of the best designs relate to drinking. Regal crown-shaped bottle coasters by Mappin and Webb occasionally pass through the saleroom. To toast Her Majesty’s long reign, Aurum (another English silversmith) made a goblet with a lion-form stem; a pair sold a few years ago for $698. The late 1970s w e r e

“Among the big attractions for Americans was Jubilee England,” reported the New York Times at the end of the summer. The big-ticket pieces will, surely, start to circulate through American salerooms in the coming years. So far, though, the home market is dominated by the easily portable. The millefiore paperweight by Whitefriars is characteristic of the sort of thing tourists were hauling home in their hard-shell Samsonite suitcases. The paperweight is made of hand-cut class and ornamented with a crown surmounting the letters “E” and “R” and the dates “1952” and “1977.” Another national market trait: Wedgwood Jasperware. The American taste for white basrelief decoration on blue stoneware is evident in the many group lots of small dishes and boxes. Judging by online listings, though, what Americans bought in great numbers were the mugs.

at a time when causes for celebration were not numerous. The pre-Diana royal family was less sensational. The tabloids had to make due with small scandals, like the parking tickets of the younger royals. In this light, the old-fashioned commemoratives seemed the most appropriate to create. The production of Royal Doulton is representative. For Elizabeth’s jubilee, they made a loving cup, in an edition of 250, that was closely inspired by the 1930s models. The price was $435. The jubilee loving cup is proof that

Sandringham, the queen’s Norfolk house. It was made in an edition of 200. There are, to be sure, some jubilee curiosities floating around the market. Wedgwood, usually a sure hand at this sort of thing, released a line of amethyst glass wares embellished with jasper discs. At auction, they sell - when they do sell - for less than $50. No less eccentric is the contribution of Stuart Devlin, the Australian silversmith. His repertoire of “surprise

Manufacturers were, no doubt, counting on the Americans to come through. The Aurum goblets, for example, were made in an edition of 750 - a number that presumed a vital foreign market. They were expecting us. “You’ve had your celebration, America. Now it’s our turn” was the promotional slogan for British Airways in the postBicentennial year of 1977. With the dollar less weak, Americans traveled abroad in increased numbers.

There are dozens for sale. With prices rarely surpassing the tendollar mark, never buy anything in less than pristine condition. They are so inexpensive that the cost of shipping can exceed the price. The mass-market mugs typically have a portrait of the queen, together with the royal standard and coat of arms. There are also coin boxes. Because it was a time of rampant inflation they can be classed with the ornamental wares. Especially striking is the Adams model, which has a hexagonal form and bold red and blue decoration. The following year, in 1978, manufacturers sought to repeat their success by issuing new commemoratives for the 25th coronation anniversary. The wares are recognizable by the dates 1953 and 1978, and the coronation coach motif. This follow-up silver jubilee reflects the increased number of royal events and anniversaries that are observed, officially and commercially. In fact, Elizabeth II is only the second English monarch to celebrate a silver jubilee, although many more have reigned for at least 25 years. Her grandfather George V was the first to mark the milestone in 1935.

SHOPS & CENTERS COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: It’s All About The Magic! did at twelve. But I still have great fun with them. Collecting magic tricks is not a new fad in the antiques world. Some of the great magicians of the 1940s and 1950s collected tricks used by older vaudeville magicians. Some of it was, of course, to acquire a new trick that could be included in their acts -

never gets tried out is simply unthinkable. It begs to be tested and studied and learned and then tried out on the family - or at least my three-year-old. Sources for vintage magic tricks are more varied that you might think. I haunt used and antique bookstores, as frequently only manuals and guides

chased the leftover stock from an old store. Finally, the specialized dealers and Internet are fertile grounds for searching out those specialized tricks. Unlike other areas of collecting where I emphasize the fine and formal,

here I suggest you get the ones that work and look great. As I said, magic trick collecting is about practicing the tricks - not just hanging the kit on the wall. Or, in my case, it’s sometimes about getting a threeyear-old to eat her carrots!

The other night at dinner, three-year old Mary was refusing to eat. (Sigh…the joys of parenting are never-ending.) So I fell back upon a little slight of hand. Remembering my days of doing amateur magic shows (Seibert the Great) when I was 12 years old, I began by using the famed “French drop” and palming the carrots in order to make them disappear and then re-appear in Mary’s ears, nose, arm, etc. She ate every one, as daddy made it magically disappear and reappear. I remember growing up in the 1970s how important the stage magic was. As a kid, I studied the FAO Schwarz catalogs intently, looking at the boxed up

magic sets the firm sold and dreaming of how I could afford color-changing scarves or a professional set of linking rings. Doug Henning, the young Canadian magician who combined beautiful sleight of hand with rock and roll, was starring in The Magic Show on Broadway in New York City. David Copperfield would come along a few years later to bring illusions to TV. It was a golden age of stage magic. Some months back up at Adamstown, Pennsylvania, I stumbled upon a magician’s kit that probably belonged to a talented amateur magician. It contained numerous small stage illusions. There was a small set of linking rings, a dove pan, and lots more. Naturally, it had to come home with me. Now in my forties, I have to confess to not remembering all the tricks, and getting frustrated when my hands don’t move as easily as they

The auction catalog showed a top assessed value of $125,000 for a soda fountain from 1893. But, as all collectors know, in an auction anything can happen. And it did... When bidding stopped, the price was $4.5 million! “I’m stunned, said Larry Schmidt, organizer of the auction held by the Schmidt Museum of CocaCola Memorabilia of Elizabethtown, Kentucky. “We thought that maybe it could go for as high as $1 million. But this is incredible. Who’s to say what a piece of history is worth? The soda fountain was built for the Columbian Exhibition at the World’s Fair in Chicago. Less than ten of these rare rifles are known to exist. Another exceedingly rare Winchester to be featured is the Model 1876 “Centennial” revolver ($90,000 to $150,000). with an estimate of $125,00 to $175,000. The Colt single action is one of the most widely recognized firearms ever, and this April the highest condition example known to exist will be up for sale. A U.S. inspected Model 1883 Gatling gun with field carriage and caisson is sure to turn some heads during the three-day sale and is expected to bring $200,000 to $350,000. Colts are far from the only noteworthy pieces in this auction. The auction features exceedingly rare milestones in the evolution of Winchester. The first “true” Winchester, a Briggs Patent Henry Rifle is estimated to bring $180,000 to $275,000. This rifle represents the first attempt of Oliver Winchester to improve upon the Henry rifle from the dissolved New Haven Arms Company, but was quickly outdated by the Kings patent improvement making the Briggs patent rifles obsolete.

As many are thinking of holiday preparations, the staff at James D. Julia was immersed in an auction event that showcased an outstanding array of quality antiques to contemporary objects d’art. Combining the efforts of Julia’s advertising, toy and doll division head Andrew Truman and glass and lamp department head Dudley Browne, bidders were excited by the prospect of a bargain and the anticipation of the frenzied bidding battles that often ensue. The vast assortment of treasures this time around was a feast of over 1,400 lots. A two-day session of antique and contemporary paperweights, lamps, rare art glass, English and French cameo followed a diverse array of American and European toys, mechanical banks, fine French and German dolls, antique advertising, salesman samples, coinoperated machines, music boxes, and other fine items the day prior for a final tally of over $2.5 million! In the glass auction, once again, Tiffany lamps and accessories performed admirably. A stunning Nasturtium leaded lamp with

OUTSTANDING ESTATE AUCTION SAT., APRIL 28 AT 10:00 A.M. THE WEST END FIREHALL

BRODHEADSVILLE, PA 18322

From the Dorothy-Lee Jones collection was a lot of two glass decanters, one a clear example with carved floral design and an amber cut glass example in the daisy and button pattern. In a seemingly endless bidding battle well beyond its $200 to $400 estimate, the lot ultimately sold for a phenomenal $22,425.

Prior to an elaborate window being created, Tiffany artists would sketch and paint their ideas in plotting out how the finished product would look. These sketches rarely hit the market and are quite sought after by the collector who has everything. One watercolor of a garden scene depicting a woman standing at a fountain in the setting sun far exceeded a presale estimate of $2,000 to $3,000 to finish up at $18,400.

original presentation box went out at $12,650. Other highlights from his collection included a Clichy millefiori newel post with a variety of flowers in a range of hues. Estimated for $6,000 to $10,000, it sold for $10,350. His Clichy millefiori paperweight with a close pack of exquisitely crafted flowers went out at $9,200 against a $2,000 to $3,000 estimate. From other collections came examples such as an antique St. Louis dahlia with a yellow central stamen surrounded by five tiers of blue striped petals. This exceptional piece brought $16,100, just over its estimate. Miscellaneous highlights included a selection (Continued on page 25)
