John F. Long: Folk Painter Of Reinholds By Karl Pass

ohn F. Long (1894-1984) was a carpenter and house painter by trade but known for his reverse paintings on glass. Thanks to his grandson, Dennis Stephan, his artwork and life are well-documented. Long lived his entire life in the northern Lancaster County town of Reinholds, Pa. The rural Pennsylvania German enclave in West Cocalico Township was once refered to as Reinholds Station when the rail line first came to town in the 1860s. As a child, Long attended Vera Cruz School, a two-mile walk from his house. He married Anna Bouder on June 4, 1914, at age 20, and they raised five children at their home on Main Street. Long was a self-trained artist, producing in excess of 1,000 paintings over the course of roughly 66 years. He specialized in reverse painting on glass, a technique that typically begins with the artist sketching a scene on paper, then reversing the direction

which were often painted gold. In an interview conducted on Oct. 22, 1978, at age 84, Long talked about how he got started doing reverse painting on glass. Antiques dealer Hattie Brunner asked him to repair a painted glass tablet on a mantle clock door. “Hattie was influential in getting him started,” said Stephan. A lifelong hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed painting wildlife. He painted homesteads and local buildings, sometimes commissioned, scenes copied from postcards, and various prints, including Currier & Ives. His early work was not dated, according to Stephan. He signed his paintings “J. F. Long.” Most of his work was done in a studio on the second floor of his barn, located behind his house. The enclosed back porch on Long’s house was covered floor to ceiling with Here is John Long working in his second floor his work. His younger brother (by two years), Harry F. Long, worked at Eberly’s Hardware Store in Reinholds during the ’50s and ’60s and also spent time painting. He painted mainly local scenes using oil-on-masonite board. Harry also did cane-chair-seating and various woodworking, including making and painting children’s chairs. In the ’70s, the late New York City dealer John Gordon made trips to Brunner’s shop and bought work by Harry. It is not known whether he bought and sold John’s (Continued on page 2)

Hattie Brunner’s Antiques Shop was adjoined to her nephew William Heinsey’s General Store, which also served as a grocery. Heinsey commissioned Long for this painting. It is believed to be the only version.

He also did not do reverse painting on glass. He painted farm scenes on masonite and occasionally objects, such as stools, jugs, and, as seen here, children’s chairs. Harry made and painted these chairs.

paintings. The late Mary Snyder (1931-2011) was another well-known antiques dealer in Reinholds, who, along with Brunner, was influential in promoting Pennsylvania German folk art (both period and contemporary). In 1981, John Long moved into his daughter’s home, and a public sale was held at his house, where several hundred of his paintings sold. He died in 1984, and on Sept. 1 of that year, his estate sale was held. Approximately 500 paintings were sold. That sale took place at the Reamstown Fire Hall. Three Swamp UCC Church paintings sold for $44, $60, and $80. Two Black Horse Tavern paintings sold for $65 and $66; and two Reinholds Fire Hall paintings sold for $50 and $72. Long often painted buildings during different seasons and time periods, such as the

Ephrata Cloister Saal. He did several adaptations of the Black Horse Tavern after it was torn down in 1978. During his early childhood, the tavern had a long balcony and green shutters. He painted it again after the balcony was gone and it had been plastered/stuccoed. He lived down the road from the tavern on Main Street (Route 897) and salvaged lumber from the building to make frames for his tavern paintings. The Reinholds Station Trinity Chapel, a few doors down the road from Long, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Other local buildings he painted were the hotel (still standing), the firehouse, Hattie Brunner’s Antiques Shop with Heinsey’s General Store, and the old schoolhouse, which still stands at the intersection of Swamp Church Road and Galen Hall Road. In the late 1920s, the building was raised off its foundation, logs ™ were placed under the structure, and, with mule power, it was turned 180 degrees to face the opposite direction. P.O. monopolized the late 1990s. By 1995, Magic had already created a loyal and stable following, and with each subsequent expansion set released, more players were attracted to its addictive fantasy-based game play. By 1996, official tournaments were held that featured actual cash prizes for which players could compete. It was also at this same time that interest in the game started to attract media attention. Schools started taking necessary precautions to ban students from playing collectible cardbased games for fear that they contributed to addictive

years, and some of these sets contain highly sought-after cards as well. The game of Magic can best be described as a complicated role-playing game that relies on a player’s skill just as much as a player’s luck. It is generally described as a variant of the once popular Dungeons and Dragons game, except with collectible game cards being substituted for dice and paper and a pencil. The game is credited with giving rise to the collectible game card genre for which Nintendo helped corner the market upon its release of the Pokemon card game that

In 1993, a gifted mathematician by the name of Richard Garfield created a unique card game that would go on to become a worldwide phenomenon in just a few short years. It was first published by Wizards of the Coast, and his creation, “Magic: The Gathering” (known solely as “Magic” to enthusiasts and collectors), would be the first role-playing-based card game to ignite an entire industry in a quest to compete for consumers’ dollars. Ironically, when the first shipment of Magic cards hit

retailers in August of 1993, very little advertising accompanied its release. Sales of the now famous card game relied solely on the word of mouth of fellow consumers or recommendations from comic book and specialty retailers who chose to carry it. The first set of cards readily available at the time of release is now referred to as the Alpha series, which was quietly replaced by the Beta series of cards. Both of these sets of cards are extremely hard to find today and were quickly replaced by what is now known as the unlimited series of cards, which are still in general production today. A great deal of expansion sets were also created over the

As a researcher, he frequented local historical libraries and became active in historical organizations throughout Lancaster County, especially Wheatland and Rock Ford, and helped found the former Heritage Center of Lancaster County and the Historic Preservation Trust. The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society preserves and interprets the culture and context of Anabaptist-

related faith communities connected to Lancaster County, Pa. This exhibition was curated by Clarke E. Hess, of Lititz, Pa., the society’s museum committee chairman, and is open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The society is located at 2215 Millstream Road in Lancaster, Pa. Hess was a friend of Snyder and has devoted extensive time to researching family histories and the material culture surrounding these objects.

“The collection came to us as a surprise, but the pieces obviously belong here. We are deeply grateful for the way these items supplement and enrich our museum holdings, said society director Rolando Santiago. For directions or additional information, call 717-3939745 or visit www.lmhs.org.

a place in the hearts and minds of so many players and collectors alike. Even more astounding are some of the incredible prices being paid on the secondary market for vintage cards. Whether you love or loathe it, the importance of “Magic: The Gathering cannot be denied. Its effect on the overall collecting market has yet to be fully realized. Hopefully within the coming years, more auction houses and hobby-specific publications will pay further attention to this sector of the market.

give any player an unfair advantage and are highly sought after as a result. They consist of the following: Black Lotus, Ancestral Recall, Time Walk, Mox Pearl, Mox Sapphire, Mox Jet, Mox Ruby, Mox Emerald, and Timetwister. Most of these cards in nearmint condition or better and third party graded can sell for high four figures, and some easily enter the high five figures much like the now infamous “Black Lotus. Magic was released almost 23 years ago and still continues to attract new players. For a card-based game released in a world of increased interactive entertainment, it is quite surprising that it has managed to occupy

Grading Service (BGS) and the Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) offer grading services to collectors of Magic cards. This has become increasingly big business among collectors of vintage Alpha and Beta series of cards. Along with the reserve list of cards, many collectors and enthusiasts see a healthy market for most highly sought-after cards, with many experts insisting that we are on the cusp of a continued bull market. Believe it or not, but Magic does has its fair share of socalled blue chip investment grade cards. These are known solely as the “Power Nine and consist of nine of the most powerful cards ever created in the series. These cards

To this day, this official reserve list still exists, and the current publisher of the game takes its existence very seriously. This has caused some controversy among players due to the fact that one of the rarest cards ever created (known as the “Black Lotus) sold for over $25,000 in 2014 and was even featured on the reality television show “Storage Wars. Today, third party grading has become commonplace among serious Magic collectors. in the game had already soared to record heights, and an established secondary market was established to keep track of the growing value of now vintage cards. With both the original Alpha and Beta series well out of print for almost a decade, interest in acquiring these now defunct cards increased. Thanks in part to a clever marketing ploy from the game’s creators, certain vintage Magic cards were no longer allowed to be used in tournaments due to how powerful these cards were. It should come as no surprise that some of these now banned cards are also highly sought after. Making matters worse, the company created a

The Jewel Tea Man And Autumn Leaf Monthly Display Showcases Autumn Leaf Pattern Hall China It all began with an idea about coffee. In 1899, Frank Vernon Skiff, an employee of the India Tea Company in Chicago, Ill., was looking for a new way to get the coffee, tea, and spices to customers. Instead of beans, leaves, and grains languishing in the warehouse for months before making it to the grocers’ shelves, he decided he would bring the fresh, aromatic fare right to the door of the company’s best customers, housewives. So with nothing but a horse and wagon, he set out to make history. It wasn’t long before word spread about this phenomenon—fresh roasted coffee delivered right to the consumer’s door. In fact, Skiff became so popular that customers began asking if he could procure other merchandise for them as well. Business grew rapidly, and Skiff and his team of door-todoor salesmen, now known

as the “Jewel Tea Men,” began to expand their catalogs to include over 50 products, selling everything from laundry soap to toiletries. In 1933, after many requests for more durable goods, the Jewel Tea Company joined forces with the Hall China Company. To encourage sales, Hall China designed the Autumn Leaf pattern exclusively for Jewel Tea to use as a sales incentive. Now homemakers could look forward to getting a dinner plate or sugar dish with their purchases, and soon enough they had collected the whole set. Although they retired the business in 1981, many consumers still remember the days of the Jewel Tea Man bringing china to their door. This month, to celebrate autumn, the Grist Mill Antiques Center in Pemberton, N.J., has created a beautiful table display set

Burlington City Emporium Antique Show And Garden Market Planned The third biannual Burlington City Emporium Antique Show and Garden Market will take place on Sunday, Oct. 25, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Historic Burlington Antique and Art Emporium. The Emporium is located at 424 High St. in Burlington City, N.J. Emporium dealers will fill the front of the Emporium and the adjacent parking lot with great items, and the courtyard will be filled with mums and Halloween decorations. The month of October is traditionally known for the changing of the leaves, mums, and Halloween. Halloween is

celebrated in a number of countries worldwide on the 31st of October. Components of the holiday have origins with the celebration of All Saints Eve. This day is dedicated to remember the dead, including Saints and all the faithful departed believers. Of course, today,

Halloween activities include Trick-orTreating, attending costume parties, decorating, carving pumpkins, visiting haunted attractions, and telling scary stories. During the months of October and November, the Emporium will have display cases filled with vintage Halloween decorations. During the Antique Show and

Garden Market, auctioneer Chris Doerner and wife Elaine, of 21st Century Antiques, will provide free appraisals between noon and 2 p.m. (only three items per customer). Emporium dealer Pat Patricio will join them, giving evaluations on watercolors, oil paintings, and prints. The Emporium dealers refer to this show and market as a “Let’s make a deal day.” Dealers will be inside the co-op as well to answer questions and offer discounts. The Emporium is open seven days a week, with extended hours until 7 p.m. on Thursdays. To learn more, call 609-747-8333.

packed auction hall, two camera crews, and an incessantly buzzing phone bank made sure that the action simmered all day long. Even within the first hour of the auction, bids for firearms were soaring over their high estimates. Lot 48 was an antique Winchester Deluxe 1873 with a high estimate of $3,500 that sold for $10,350. At mid-day, Lot 303 came up for bid, a historic Cole Agee engraved and gold plated Colt Single Action Army revolver documented as being Roy Rogers’ holster gun. Love for the “King of the Cowboys” still runs strong as the fancy little revolver more than doubled its high estimate by selling for $57,500. Highend shotguns also saw a lot of activity that day. Browning Citori shotguns were consistently selling high, but a true overachiever was the engraved A.H. Fox XE Grade

The historic Cole Agee engraved and goldplated Colt Single Action Army revolver with pearl grips and documented as being Roy Rogers’ “holster gun” sold for $57,500. It came from the Roy Rogers Dale Evans museum.

Maybe it’s the hospitable Illinois weather this time of year or maybe the annual barbecue that follows the preview day with its live music, cold drinks, and smoky ribs from local favorite Jim’s Ribs. A rare Krieghoff Second Model FG-42 Fallschirmjaegergewehr paratrooper rifle, BATFE registered, fully transferrable machine gun with boxed ammunition, sold for $322,000.

early crescendo when Lot 1120 came across the block. It contained a Revolutionary War used Brown Bess flintlock musket with a virtual library of accompanying research as well as an authentic period diary. An advanced firearms collector paid $126,500 for it, well exceeding the $85,000 high estimate. A mere 15 lots later a harmonica rifle made by J. M. Browning, father of the prolific John Moses Browning, was offered to the public and inspired a spirited bidding battle. The bids marched upwards on Lot 1135 past its $100,000 high estimate, finally selling for $138,000. The highest achieved price of the auction took place when Lot 1621, a Krieghoff manufactured German FG-42 paratrooper rifle, proved that last year’s high sale price of an FG42 for $299,000 was no random spike. This

had never been seen before by collectors and was as “fresh” as it gets, though a near identical, consecutively serial numbered version does reside in the West Point Academy Museum. The bidding had barely begun, creeping quickly from the opening bid of $75,000 to $100,000, before a voice at the back of the room rang out, “One hundred and fifty thousand dollars.” The room went silent briefly before the auctioneers picked up again asking for the next bid of $160,000. Upon receiving it from a phone bidder, the voice cried out immediately, “Two hundred thousand!” More than a few looks were cast rearward to see the determined bidder, and the auctioneers continued, now seeking $220,000 for the alluring pistol. It too came from the phones, and no sooner had it (Continued on page 18)

This rare Revolutionary War used U.S. surcharged long land pattern Brown Bess flintlock musket with the Revolutionary War diary of Jonathan Conant sold for $126,500.

collection of the inventor, Bunji Hamada. A Japanese military enthusiast who recognized the significance of the lot willingly surpassed the $16,000 high estimate and won this assortment for $31,625. German military pieces would continue to be a strong performer. Exemplary prices on day three included a cased Model 1893 Borchardt in Lot 3575 that was won for $37,375, despite having a high estimate of $25,000, and a DWM Model

This documented U.S. Springfield Armory National Match 1959 M1 Garand semiautomatic rifle once belonging to U.S. Senator John F. Kennedy sold for a record $149,500.

Woodsman pistols consistently surpassed their high estimates and the red hot “snake guns” continued to enjoy their popularity and increased values. But various single lots throughout the day made their own commotion and continued to exemplify the incessant growth of the gun collecting hobby as a whole. Lot 3492 was a rare and documented Mauser Prototype Luger pistol. This pre-production test Luger easily passed its estimate of $5,000-$10,000 and achieved $23,000 from a collector. Another prototype also saw success in Lot 3552. It contained a scarce Japanese Hamada type two pistol prototype, serial number 33, and an impressive host of blueprints and design documents from the

Public Auction

1934 Turkish Contract Luger in Lot 3564 nearly doubled its $25,000 high estimate by earning a final selling price of $48,875. Five world class collections, enthusiasts from across the country, and even a visit from the director and senior curator of the NRA museum all came together to make a memorable and successful auction weekend. Old favorites showcased their staying power, some renewed interest showed up in some unexpected places, and all showed overall strength in the firearms market. Rock Island Auction done so than another bid was called from the back, “Two hundred fifty!” and audible gasps could be heard in the auction hall. That princely sum would turn out to be the nail in the coffin, and the gold washed Walther was sold for a realized price of $287,500. All the action even elicited a response from Rock Island owner and president Pat Hogan, who said from the podium, “I like the way you bid!” As if that weren’t enough, day two also saw president John F. Kennedy’s National Match M1 Garand in Lot 1807 trounce its high estimate by riding a wave of international publicity to a final price of $149,500. This is a world record price for an M1 Garand that broke the previous record that Rock Island had set less than five months earlier for the shop model M1 Garand bearing serial number “7.” Colts turned out to be the surprise of the day, as 1911 and

which cost $100. However, a best quality Vine Border would cost about $20,000 today, whereas the equivalent in a Snowball Hydrangea would be about $200,000. Obviously, the marketplace has decided what it would rather have,” said Macklowe. “Tiffany Glass: Painting with Color and Light,” which runs through Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016, at Winterthur, is comprised of five windows, 20 lamps, and 75 pieces of opalescent flat glass. Models illustrate how leadedglass shades are fabricated, and three Tiffany lamp forgeries explore issues of authenticity and connoisseurship. In his lecture, Macklowe will use examples from museums, auctions and the Macklowe

Gallery to explore trends (how Tiffany’s use of abstraction put him at the artistic helm of American Modernism), values (the evolution of the collectors’ market), and authenticity (how to evaluate authenticity and value, and where expertise plays a role). In addition, he will uncover how Tiffany’s artistic success was rooted in his mastery of color and exotic forms and why the Tiffany art glass and lamp markets have always been separate. Macklowe has appeared on television to discuss Tiffany lamps with Martha Stewart, lectured on the art glass of Emile Galle at the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati, and lectured on art nouveau jewelry at Christie’s auction house on multiple occasions. Three more lectures are planned at Winterthur to

accompany the Tiffany exhibition. At 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, Daphne Lingon, senior jewelry specialist at Christie’s auction house, will discuss “Tiffany & Company: The Allure of America’s Jeweler.” At 6 p.m. onTuesday, Nov. 3, Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen, curator of American Decorative Arts at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan, reviews Tiffany Studio works in “Unimaginable Splendors: The Art of Louis C. Tiffany.” At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2, Lindsy R. Parrott, director of the Neustadt collection of Tiffany Glass in New York City, explores Tiffany glass history and types in “Unimaginable Splendors of Color: Tiffany’s Opalescent Glass.” The Winterthur exhibition was organized by the Neustadt

collection. Tiffany used exotic motifs, extraordinary color, and abstracted forms in his lamps and art glass to change the vocabulary of American design. While the Tiffany Studios ceased production in 1933, the meticulous craftsmanship of every lamp and vase has turned each into its own timeless masterpiece. As a painter, Tiffany was captivated by the interplay of light and color, and this fascination found a spectacular expression in his glass “paintings.” With opalescent glass, he captured and manipulated light in color to achieve impressionistic effects. Using innovative techniques and materials, Tiffany Studios created leaded-glass windows and lamps in richly varied colors, patterns, textures, and opacities. Visit www.winterthur.org.
