Sixty Years And Counting - Fabulous 1952 By Donald-Brian Johnson he Wheel of Fortune goes “ spinning around; Will the arrow point my way? Will this be the day?” “Wheel of Fortune” Bennie Benjamin & George Weiss, 1952 For the first wave of baby boomers - those making their debut in the early 1950s - that arrow on life’s “Wheel of Fortune” was definitely pointing in the right direction. Optimistic new trends emerged that, during the previous years of selfdenial would never have seen the light of day. The fabulous 1950s had arrived...and consumers were ready to celebrate! Just for fun, let’s take a single year in the early 1950s, and journey back for a look at what was happening then. We’ll set our time machine dial for...well...how about 60 years ago? Seat belts fastened? All right, then: next stop, 1952! Setting The Scene In 1952, adults could look forward to living “Alpacas and Machu Picchu” a 15-tile just over 68 years, depiction by Harris Strong. 1960, 24 inch by and the average 36 inch. $600 to $700. However, the Higgins found their conjoined careers coming into focus, thanks to participation in well-received exhibitions, a flattering promotional campaign by Hedrich-Blessing, and the inherent, timeless beauty of their “modern miracles with everyday glass”. • Moss Lamps. By 1952, the “lamps that spin” brightened many a forward-thinking household. The brainchild of Thelma Moss, these Plexiglas products of San Francisco’s Moss Mfg. were distinguished by the inclusion of revolving ceramic figurines. For the more adventurous, there were Moss lamps that served dual purposes: Moss bars, radios, clocks, intercoms, fountains, and even aquariums! • Sascha Brastoff. Sascha’s skill at self-promotion, (he was billed as “the modern Cellini”), at times threatened to outshine his equally prodigious design skills. beauties such as Ava Gardner were winning new fans (Ava also won Frank Sinatra). In sports, those “damn Yankees” were once again the World Series champs. It’s hard to believe, but it was also 60 years ago that perennially youthful Dick Clark first brought us American Bandstand, launching a pop music hosting career that lasted until 2012. Crooners still ruled the music charts, and 1952’s top-sellers included Kay Starr’s “Wheel of Fortune,” Jo S t a ff o r d ’s “You Belong To Me,” and E d d i e F i s h e r ’s rendition of “Wish You W e r e Here”. More energetic music, however, was just a hip-swivel away: in 1952, DJ Alan Freed p u t

It was “out with the old, in with the new,” as the new broom of postwar culture swept aside staid and dusty conventions of artistic expression. Up-to-theminute interpretations took center stage, combining the best techniques of the past with the best visions of the future. Here are a dozen design “names” of 1952 that still resonate with today’s collectors:

in colorful ceramics which laced theatricality with whimsy, Brastoff churned out over 400 different designs annually. In 1952, work on his massive 35,0000-foot Los Angeles studio was nearing completion. • Marc Bellaire. By 1952, this talented Brastoff protégé was developing his own style of ceramic decoration. Although obviously influenced by his mentor in terms of object shape and decorative placement, Bellaire’s designs are less ethereal than Brastoff’s, and embrace darker, more exotic themes. Out on his own, Bellaire became known as “the crown prince of ceramics”. • Roselane. The Pasadena ceramics venture headed by Doc & Georgia Fields capitalized on the early 1950s fascination with “Asiatic” motifs. Less showy than Brastoff and Bellaire, Roselane is best defined by its use of broad sculptural strokes and soft glazes. Roselane’s soft-edged “boneless” shapes took the edge off Modernism’s starkness. • (Continued on page 2)

Today, collectors continue to be captivated by the Haeger lineup, from “panther” TV lamps to chomping-at-the-bit statuary of rearing wild horses and snorting bulls. • Harris Strong. People traveled from near and far to this year’s Appraisal Day event at Gratz Gallery & Conservation Studio in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, with paintings and frames in tow, to get guidance on the value of their prized works of art and fine frames. A sizeable group of people left the gallery delighted with their discoveries. While some were disappointed with dampened expectation, all were good-spirited about the essential purpose of the day: Over $1,000 in donations was raised in support of A Woman’s Place (AWP). A Woman’s Place is the only domestic violence community benefit organization in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. AWP has provided free, private, confidential, and comprehensive shelter, service, support, advocacy, outreach, training, and education to victims of domestic abuse and violence

Laura Sperber, co-owner of Dan Morphy, co-owner of Julie Abrams, president of Legend-Morphy Coins LLC. Legend-Morphy Coins LLC. Legend-Morphy Coins LLC.

“I think collectors will react very enthusiastically to our new venture because we’re a fresh enterprise that’s approaching the auction business from a collector’s point of view,” said Sperber, who operates at the highest echelons of the numismatic hobby. Over the years, Sperber’s New Jersey-based Legend Numismatics has owned some of the rarest United States coins in existence and has brokered a number of monumental private-treaty deals, including the $36 million private sale of a single intact collection. Sperber said the concept behind Legend-Morphy has been brewing for several years. “Dan has had a long involvement with coins. He started collecting them as a boy, and by the time he was 12, he was already actively buying and selling coins and other types of antiques and collectibles. He and I collaborated on a few coin sales in the past, and they were very successful, but we knew that in order for our collaboration to be a long-term venture, we needed additional staff and more gallery space,” Sperber said. “Morphy’s has since doubled both its gallery size and staff, and has built a phenomenal customer base of more than 350,000 collectors worldwide. With those points checked off our list, Dan and I felt there was only one item of unfinished business to attend to - signing on Julie Abrams, the person whose Internet coin-trading experience and executive abilities would ensure our success.” Abrams described the joint venture between Morphy and Sperber as “a meeting of the minds…on

one hand you have one of the country’s top auction houses wanting to start a coin division, and on the other hand, the top coin dealer wanting to start an auction division. It’s two fabulous companies joining forces at the right time, and I’m incredibly excited that they asked me to spearhead the venture for them.” In addition to working with Sperber and Morphy on consignments, publicity and marketing, Abrams will be representing LegendMorphy at all major coin shows and conventions. Like Sperber, Abrams is impressively credentialed and is a member of the ANA and other prestigious numismatic organizations. Legend-Morphy Rare

Coin Auctions will launch its new operation with a September 27 sale at Morphy’s gallery. Already, several stellar coins have been confirmed for consignment to the event. A preview selection will be on display August 7 to 11 at the ANA Convention in Philadelphia, and at several other coin shows. Legend-Morphy will have a presence at the booth 55, the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Expo, June 28 to 30 at the Baltimore Convention Center. The company’s web site, www.legendmorphy.com, is expected to go live in late June. To inquire about consigning, call (717) 335-3435 or e-mail juliea@legend morphy.com.

Two of the country’s most influential and respected collectibles experts, auction house owner Dan Morphy and antique coin authority Laura Sperber, have joined forces to establish LegendMorphy Rare Coin Auctions. The new firm, which will produce a minimum of two rare coin auctions per year, represents a powerful merger of numismatic knowledge and auction-management experience. Morphy is the dynamic CEO and owner of Morphy Auctions in Denver, Pennsylvania, while Sperber is a renowned United States coin expert and founding owner of Legend Numismatics Inc. The third key player behind the new operation is Julie Abrams, who co-founded the groundbreaking digitized coin-auction company Teletrade in 1986, long before Internet auctions existed. Abrams will serve as president of LegendMorphy, overseeing all executive matters and day-to-day operations. Morphy said the new company will take an innovative approach to numismatic sales. “As I see it, the coin auction world has always been about business and numbers. What it has lacked is personalized service at both ends of a transaction for the customer who is buying just as much as for the consignor who is selling. Morphy-Legend will certainly be run like a world-class rare coin business if Laura and Julie are involved. They’re consummate professionals, both in their business acumen and knowledge of coins. But the three of us are also committed to injecting excitement and passion into the process of buying and selling fine coins. Morphy’s has an enthusiastic support team on board to help us make that vision a reality,” Morphy said. Legend-Morphy’s auctions will be conducted live at Morphy’s southeastern Pennsylvania gallery and other venues, with some of the auction dates and locations chosen specifically to coincide with major coin shows. All forms of bidding will be available at the company’s sales, including absentee, phone and live via the Internet. Morphy’s staff will handle pre- and post-event duties, catalog production and shipping.

Noted dental historian and founding director of the National Museum of Dentistry, Dr. Ben Z. Swanson, says, “Dr. Gary Lemen’s collection of dental instruments is probably the finest and most important in the United States and possibly the best in the world.” Dr. Lemen’s was pictured extensively in the only book ever published on dental instruments, Antique Dental Instruments by Elisabeth Bennion, published in August 1986. The Lemen collection was carefully and aggressively assembled over almost 38 years of collecting. Dr. Lemen traveled the United States in his truck to gather instruments, books, and equipment for many years, using a unique method to contact early dental practices. He used dentist directories from the 1890s and he checked current dental directories (at the time) to determine practices that were still in existence by descendants. He located many, many of these multi-generational practices and bought their holdings of early dental antiques.

results, and so was Dick Claus, who was in the audience watching the sale, and beaming. It was fun to watch his expressions as each toy was sold.” Bertoia said European bidders had come forearmed with the knowledge that they might have to pay a steep price to acquire the rare and exceptional boats Claus had favored throughout his collecting years. “There was so much anticipation in the room. It was like a huge club had gathered, and everyone was eager to buy,” Bertoia said. “They were happy to win and, in a sportsmanlike way, they were also happy for those who had outbid them. It was all part of the magic of the day, and afterward everyone said they couldn’t wait for Part II (November 10).” Well before the introduction of the first lot, more than 100 registered bidders staked a claim to their reserved seats at Bertoia’s gallery, while scores of others waited patiently either by their phones or computers to bid online through LiveAuctioneers. “It’s not unusual at any of our auctions for bidders to ask to be seated in a particular seat or row. The Convention will celebrate the popularity of CAS across America in cities large and small, as well as the allAmerican themes of many Studio releases. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on August 25th, Convention attendees will take in the Wisconsin Pottery Association Show & Sale at the Alliant Energy Center. Later, all will gather at Madison’s Howard Johnson Plaza for the Convention festivities, with activities and dĂŠcor centered around a funfilled “summer vacationâ€? theme. There’ll be “car bingoâ€?, vacation photos, road maps, postcards—even a souvenir stand! In short, everything that made those summer vacations of long ago so unforgettable. Getting the evening underway will be a social hour, and the popular “CAS On Display Contestâ€?; all in attendance are invited to submit entries. A buffet dinner and membership meeting will be followed by the club’s annual auction, featuring professional auctioneer Shirley Baumann. Events will conclude with door prizes, and presentation of the 2012

Strong sales continued well into the middle of the afternoon, peaking with the presentation of Lot. 363, an Oscar Bach bronze and wrought iron curved bench having a central figural cartouche and dolphin decorated back panel circa 1910.
