Hartzell’s Auction Gallery Inc. To Offer Estate Of Jack Savitsky And Mary Lou & Jack Savitt On Saturday, June 28th O
n Saturday, June 28, at 10 a.m., Hartzell’s Auction Gallery Inc. will offer the estates of folk artist Jack Savitsky and of Camelot Gallery owners Mary Lou and Jack Savitt of Macungie, Pa. John “Jack” Savitsky (19101991) of Lansford, Pa., was a coal miner and later in life became a well-recognized artist. Jack Savitt was the son of Jack Savitsky and he exhibited his father’s works exclusively at Camelot Gallery. The auction will be held on-site at the 1730s Georgian style farmhouse and stone barn, which was the home and gallery of the Savit’s. Macungie is in Lehigh County and a suburb of Allentown. This outstanding auction will include a large selection of quality paintings, drawings, sculptures, rugs, furniture, clocks, sterling silver, jewelry, textiles, country smalls and folk art. Many original Savitsky paintings will be offered without reserve including a rare pair of early works from the 1920s depicting hunting scenes titled “The Hunter” and “Hunting the Wood Duck.” Another unusual painting titled “Three Musketeers” showing Savitsky, Sterling Strauser, and Justin McCarthy will also be sold. Over 20 additional Savitsky
works, ranging from oil and acrylics to colored pencil, crayon and pen drawings will be offered. Subjects include coal miners, Adam and Eve, George Washington, Uncle Sam, clowns, children, landscapes, trains, trolleys and more. Many paintings will be offered by various other artists as well. An important work by J u s t i n McCarthy illustrating G e o rg e Washington crossing the Delaware and several pieces by Sterling Strauser, Dorothy Strauser, and Robert Rasely are also included. There are six bronze sculptures and a wooden totem created by Klaus Ihlenfeld in the 1960s, along with G e o r g e Nakashima, and several chairs by Harry Bertoia and three Bertoia monographs in the sale. An interesting tabletop sonambient sculpture attributed to Val Bertoia will also be offered to the highest bidder. Other highlights include a copper molded eagle flag pole topper from
the Booton, N.J., courthouse; an American grandfather clock; an array of sterling silver; and much more. Selling will begin at 10:00 a.m. with quality lots of antiques, household, jewelry, collectibles and primitives. The 4.35 acres of real estate with house and barn will be offered at noon, followed by the catalogued portion of the sale of artwork and antiques that begins
