The Historic East Berlin Show Annual Event Kicks Off Local Anniversary Celebration By Karl Pass

he East Berlin Historical Preservation Society (EBHPS) hosted its annual antiques show on May 1 to 3 in the town’s community center. Founded on May 8, 1764, the small Adams County, Pa., town of East Berlin celebrated its 250th anniversary with a series of events during the first week of May, and the antique show kicked off the celebration. A parade down Main Street featuring the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps from Washington, D.C., took place following the show’s closing on Saturday. Several history tours, presentations, an oldtime carnival, and a community dinner also took place throughout the week. Along with the town’s Colonial Day street fair, the Historic East Berlin Antique Show is a fundraiser for EBHPS. The hours were better than they had been in the past. Radio ads were done with the Harrisburg WITF public radio station, lectures were held, and gift bags given out to all dealers. On Friday, a lecture on Chinese ceramics and the China trade was given by volunteer show manager Michael Hrinyak. On Saturday, re-enactor Richard Fox as Benjamin Franklin spoke about circa1764 events, politics, culture, and the arts.
