Horst Sells Clarke Hess Collection: Session One Two More Sales Slated, Along With Two Real Estate Auctions By Karl Pass A two-day sale on behalf of the Clarke E. Hess estate took place at Horst Auctioneers’ facility in Ephrata, Pa., on April 26 and 27. Hess, of Lititz, Pa., was among the preeminent collectors and historians of all things Lancaster County. His primary interests centered on Mennonite genealogy and decorative arts. Our community lost one of the giants Among the stars of the sale was this Lancaster County pieced when Hess passed sampler quilt, which brought $30,000. Hess’s 2002 book, “Mennonite Arts,” remains an authoritative reference on the subject. “Clarke had a genealogical mind,” mentioned Dr. Donald Herr. A passionate geneologist, Hess loved the cultural history and provenance of things and recorded an in-depth catalog of his collection, which numbered 5,560. Number 1 was acquired in October 1966, and #5,560 in October 2018. Some items had very little information, and some contained thorough family lineages. The auction catalog Horst produced was taken directly from Hess’s inventory and included as much information as possible. Some minor variations in spelling or terminology in the catalog represent changes and developments in Hess’s understanding of the items as the years went by. At the end of each description in the catalog was his inventory number in brackets. Antiques & Auction News — May 24, 2019 - - 3

By Shawn Surmick In my last article, I shared my top tips for collecting coins. In this article, I want to share my top tips for collecting United States paper money. I have always preferred the designs of classic United States paper money from the 19th and early 20th centuries to that of the coins produced during this same time frame. Collecting classic U.S. paper money has always been a passion of mine, and I even sold off some of my vintage video game collections to finance some of my more prominent purchases. That said, much like the complexity of coin collecting, the market for classic U.S. paper money can be daunting to the beginning collector. The tips listed below have served me well over the years, and I hope that should you begin this exciting journey, my advice will offer you success. 10. Go slow; time is on your side. Numismatics, whether coins or currency, is not something you want to rush into. Only a fool buys something just because it is available. Take your time and understand the market. In the classic U.S. paper money market, large size notes (notes printed up until the year 1923) are generally more popular than small size notes (present size notes produced from 1928 and up). That said, the market is

currently in a downtrend, and deals can be had. 9. Understand third-party grading and their vocabulary. Both PMG and PCGS are two of the leading third-party grading companies when it comes to paper money grading. Both have monikers used to describe the originality of the note in question. PMG notes Exceptional Paper Quality (or EPQ) on their grading label to indicate that the note being offered is in original condition and was not pressed or doctored. PCGS uses the moniker Premium Paper Quality (or PPQ) on their holders to designate the same thing. In the past, it was not uncommon for collectors and even dealers to press defects and creases out of notes in an attempt to increase their condition. This practice actually caused a lot of notes to lose their original embossing and paper quality. Hence, the absence of the monikers EPQ or PPQ on the grading label denotes this. Note that in certain circumstances notes without this moniker can have differing market values from those that do. 8. The best deals are usually at auction. At present time, both Heritage Auctions and Stacks & Bowers regularly hold both coin and currency auctions several times a year. It is here where you will find your best deals. Do not allow yourself to fall victim to frantic bidding. Take your time and stick

to a fair but set price that you are willing to pay for an item. Much like coins, you can research almost every item sold through Heritage Auctions just by being a member, and it costs nothing to join. 7. Understand the market. Currently, the U.S. paper money market has taken a back seat to coin collecting. Also know that coin collecting has lost some popularity since the 2008/09 financial crisis. This means that deals can be had, but it will take time for the numismatic market to recover, and there is a chance it may never recover fully. If buying for investment, know this going in and buy accordingly. 6. Research, research, research. Much like coin collecting, the patient buyer always wins. Coins tone, and this presents complex market conditions for the uneducated buyer. Paper money does not tone, but you can have two similar notes in the same grade with differing levels of eye appeal. Centering and the overall appeal of a note help determine its value. Use this to your advantage, and take your time at auction. 5. Understand how paper money is cataloged and numbered. Coins have a mint year and a mintmark to help identify them. Classic U.S. paper money, on the other hand, uses something called a Friedberg number (named after the individual who came up with the system) to identify

the notes in question. You can have two similar notes produced the same year that look exactly alike, but each with a different Friedberg number to help identify them, due to differing signatures on the notes themselves. Understand that certain Friedberg numbers are scarcer than others, and this can cause certain notes to be worth more. For instance, a Friedberg number 237 $1 large size silver certificate from 1923 can be had for about $200 in gem mint condition, but that same note in Friedberg number 239 jumps close to $1,000 or more due to the scarce signature combination presented on that note. 4. Buy the book before the money. One of my favorite books on United States currency is Kenneth Bressett’s “Official Whitman Guidebook to United States Currency.” The book is usually updated every year or two and contains a detailed listing on every issue from large size currency to small size currency and fractionals. It usually sells for less than $20 and is available at most large book stores or Amazon. It is a must buy for any paper money collector. 3. Specialize and focus. You cannot own it all. If you focus on large size notes in uncirculated condition or even gem mint, you will most likely have to pick an area to specialize in. Some of the most popular categories include silver certificates, gold certificates, legal tenders, and Federal Reserve bank notes. I advise

My Top Tips For Collecting Classic U.S. Paper Money

$1, $2, and $5 issues of notes in uncirculated or gem mint condition, you are looking at a collection that will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Remember, any kind of numismatic collecting should be considered a marathon and not a sprint. Collectors who come into the market and spend a lot of money right at the start of their journey tend to experience burnout and make poor buying decisions. Patience and time in this market are your best friends.

starting with silver certificates, as they are among the most popular of all the offerings in classic U.S. paper money. 2. Be careful with obsolete and confederate currency. Confederate currency is quite popular to collect, but beginning collectors fail to realize just how much of the most common issues are out there. Most of the common confederate notes are popular, but they were overprinted. As such, there is little investment potential in most of these notes even at high grade. Obsolete currency offers something of a mixed bag, as most mainstream collectors stick to currency issued and backed by the U.S. government and ignore most private issues. That said, there is value here, but when you go to sell, be prepared to be disappointed at auction unless you hold only the scarcest obsolete notes. Obsolete currency was paper money printed and backed by private banks. 1. Be realistic about your goals, and have fun. Much like coins, a complete typeset of every note produced by the United States government is a monumental task. Even if you limit yourself to just available

Horst Auctioneers Continued from page 2

have seen the “momento mori” memorial. Upon the death of a householder, the drawing is believed to have been tacked to the wall in the individual’s “cell,” as rooms were described. Of this type of fraktur from the Cloister, it is the only surviving example known. Horst, who also sells real estate via auction, will be offering the Hess Homestead on Thursday, May 23, at 6 p.m. In 1985, Clarke bought his ancestral homestead just outside of Lititz. The 18thcentury log mainhouse, frame tenent house, and stone spring house, among other buildings reside on four acres at 27 Lititz Run Road in Warwick Township. A 5.9-acre parcel with a period 2.5 story stone house at 700 E. Front St. in Lititz will also be offered for sale by Horst on Thursday, June 20, at 6 p.m. It is adjoined to the Warwick-to-Ephrata rail trail

A glazed chintz drawstring bag, ca. 1830, with homespun linen lining, ex. Wendy Christie, sold for $525. and a park. This property was also originally built by an ancestral relative and part of the main homestead, which interested Clarke, who purchased it in the mid-’90s. Lee Stoltzfus’s sister, was the longtime tenent. This stone house (700 E. Main St.) was built by Christian Hess (17571816). It has a carved 1778 gable datestone along with initials “C.H.” Christian, and wife, Anna, had a 100-acre farm and also ran the Hess mill that was built by his father Johannes.

This cast-iron stove plate dated “1755” from Elizabeth Furnace, a side plate for a five-plate jamb stove, sold for $6,200. This type and pattern/style of stove was originally on the Hess farm. It didn’t take long at the auction for the trade to realize they weren’t coming away with much. It was a retail crowd, and prices realized were overall strong. Amish and Mennonite attended hoping to buy items with family connections. Among highlights were a miniature wrought-iron tasting spoon that went for $5,400. It had a copper bowl and four tiny copper inlaid hearts on the handle. A related example is at Winterthur, but not with four hearts. An excellent Joseph Lehn (1798-1892) lidded sugar bucket sold for $5,600 to

central Pennsylvania collectors. It had a remarkably thorough family history. A green paint-decorated wooden slide-lid box attributed to Joseph Lehn and dated “1873,” illustrated in Herr’s booklet on Lehn, sold for $4,100. A John Long betty lamp engraved “Elizabeth Hershey March the 16th 1849, J. Long,” with replaced bird finial, brought $2,250. Master late-20th-century craftsman Larry Long made the bird finial. A very rare Peter Brubacher (1816-98) black painted wooden horse, roughly 12-by-12 inches, sold to Alice and Art Booth of New Jersey for $26,500. Brubacher lived very close to where Horst’s auction house is today.

A paint-decorated checkerboard brought $4,100. It was signed “HD Killheffer Millersville, PA Jan. 29, 89.” A Christian Alsdorff ca. 1790 vorschrift fraktur (writing sample) sold late in the Harry Killheffer (1857-1935) and wife sale to the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society for $15,500. It brought Amelia Grin (1858-1932) lived on the $2,970 at the Ray and Selma Mead sale at Conestoga Auction Co. on Oct. 4, corner of George and Charlotte streets This finely decorated show (hand) towel sold for $1,500. in Millersville. 2003.

Stiegel-type glass, decorated show (hand) towels, privy bags, pillow shams, pin cushions, toy animals, samplers, and much of the fraktur did well. The second antique sale will be Friday and Saturday, June 7 and 8, and a third (dateto-be-determined) sale will take place, mostly consisting of antique books. “Much of what I know about the PA German plain culture was disseminated from him (Hess),” said Wendy

Christie. “He always took time for questions.” The captions show a cross section of the material sold and for how much. Horst does not charge a buyer’s premium, and there was no sales tax for this sale. Online buyers were charged a buyer’s premium. The total gross was $583,715. For more information, readers may contact Horst Auctioneers at 717-738-3080 or visit www.horstauction.com.

Donegal Society To Host Dr. Larry Chottiner At Annual Meeting On June 13 The Rev. Dr. Larry Chottiner will speak at the annual meeting of the Donegal Society, an organization dedicated to preserving the history of Lancaster County’s Scots-Irish settlers. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday afternoon, June 13, followed by a dinner at Donegal Presbyterian Church outside of Mount Joy, Pa. Registration is at 2:30 p.m. Chottiner will be giving a talk titled “It Matters: Discerning the Times,” a look at history’s impact on our present day

world and and how it impacts the future. Chottiner was senior minister of the Highland Presbyterian Church in Lancaster and served many other congregations over the years. He is retired and a member of Donegal Presbytery. This program will also include a soloist and a bagpiper entertaining attendees on the beautiful grounds of the Donegal Presbyterian Church. For directions or registration information, call Theresa at 717-653-1943.

Palmer Museum Of Art Announces Major Gift Of The John Driscoll American Drawings Collection The Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State recently announced a transformational gift of 140 American works on paper, recently donated by Penn State alumnus Dr. John P. Driscoll. The expansive gift, one of the most important in the 47-year history of the university’s art museum, establishes a significant American drawings collection at the Palmer Museum of Art. The John Driscoll American Drawings Collection spans more than 150 years of American art history, from 1795 to 1950, and in many ways reflects the wide-ranging scholarly and collecting interests of its namesake. Highlights of the collection include a rare and early charcoal sketch by the neoclassical painter John

His involvement with Penn State’s university art museum dates back to the summer of 1972, when he began working at the museum as a graduate assistant. year, making it New York’s oldest art gallery. “My life in the world of aesthetic and scholarly concerns came into sharp focus while studying art history and working in the Museum of Art at Penn State,” said Driscoll. “I have always been appreciative of those experiences and the wonderful people with whom I had, and continue to have, the opportunity to work and grow. My wish is that my continuing association with the Palmer Museum of Art be an expression of my appreciation and that it will have a continuing beneficial effect for students and visitors to the university and the museum.” Driscoll’s philanthropy has taken many forms since his time at Penn State. His past gifts of art to the Palmer include major paintings by Benjamin West, Jacob Eichholtz, Tompkins Harrison Matteson, and Sanford Robinson Gifford; a large group of prints, drawings, and paintings by American modernist

Arthur B. Davies; contemporary works by Abe Ajay, Marylyn Dintenfass, Alan Gussow, Don Nice, and Jenny Morgan; and notable ceramics. Driscoll has written extensively on American art and has been the curator, co-curator, or a contributor to exhibitions that have traveled to more than 20 leading museums, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, National Academy of Design, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art. Driscoll serves on the advisory board of the Palmer Museum of Art, has twice been its chair, is a past member of the board and the council of the National Academy of Design and is currently on the Visiting Committee, Department of Drawings and Prints, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. LancasterHistory Receives $150,000 For Stevens And Smith Historic Site Local And Federal Grants To Be Used For Historic Site Planning Process

Public Auction

board chair, S. Dale High. “We’re proud to support the work of LancasterHistory, especially as they move toward the creation of a museum and historic site dedicated to sharing the legacy of these two remarkable Americans. It’s an exciting prospect to envision a new, high-caliber museum of history and civil rights in the heart of Lancaster City.” LancasterHistory will use the total awarded funds to plan for the creation of the Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith Historic Site, whose key components will be the interior restoration and interpretation of the law office of Congressman Thaddeus Stevens and the home he shared with Lydia Hamilton Smith, as well as a thorough reconsideration of the roles played by Thaddeus Stevens, Lydia Hamilton Smith, and the surrounding Lancaster community in the national network of freedom seekers known as the Underground Railroad. Also, new interpretive galleries examining the legacies of Stevens and Smith regarding the creation and passage of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the U.S. Constitution, the Civil Rights Movement of the 20th century, which was built upon those amendments, African American female entrepreneurship in 19th-century America, and the preservation of free public education in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are planned. These planning grants will support costs associated with the creation of an interpretive and master plan for the site, guided by both a community advisory council and a humanities advisory council. “We are thrilled to have the support of both the NEH and the High Foundation for this early stage of the project; it reflects both the national and local significance of the contributions of Stevens and Smith to the American story,” said LancasterHistory President and CEO Tom Ryan. “On a national level,

Congressman Thaddeus Stevens laid the foundation for the Civil Rights Movement of the 20th century by his role in the creation and passage of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. These were groundbreaking in that together they outlawed slavery, granted citizenship to all native born or naturalized individuals, provided equal protection under the law, and gave the vote to all African American adult males. Locally, the story of Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith is one of commitment to equality, freedom, and education. These are two Lancastrians of whom we can all be immensely proud.” LancasterHistory anticipates the planning phase of the Stevens and Smith Historic Site project to continue throughout 2019, followed by the launch of a capital campaign in 2020. “When LancasterHistory assumed responsibility for the site in 2010, we were in the middle of a major capital and endowment campaign and construction project,” says Ryan. “We committed then to begin the process of raising funds in 2020. We are right on track.” Ryan also noted, “The community should also be grateful for the past work of the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County for ensuring the survival of these buildings and restoring their exteriors.” About the Stevens and Smith Site The historic centerpiece of the Stevens and Smith Site is the 19th-century residence and law office of Thaddeus Stevens at 45 S. Queen St. in Lancaster. A subterranean area behind his home contains an excavated cistern and yard from which more than 100,000 archaeological items were recovered. Stevens purchased the property in 1843 when he moved to Lancaster to practice law. About Thaddeus Stevens Thaddeus Stevens (17921868), a powerful statesman, fought in Congress and in the courtroom for the abolition of

slavery and for the equality of Americans of African descent in the decades prior to and during the Civil War, and in the era of Reconstruction. His legacy is aligned with two of the great reforms of the 19th century: the establishment of free public education and the codification of the principle of equality before the law for all Americans, regardless of race. Recent research has confirmed the long-held conviction of Stevens’ active involvement in the Underground Railroad, assisting fugitive slaves by harboring them at his Lancaster, Pa., property at 45 S. Queen St. About Lydia Hamilton Smith An accomplished African American businesswoman in her own right, as Stevens’ house manager and confidant for 20 years, Lydia Hamilton Smith helped shape Stevens’ philosophy toward equal rights and strengthened his abhorrence of slavery. Smith worked with Stevens to help enslaved people escape to freedom

The 19th-century residence and law office of Thaddeus Stevens is at 45 South Queen Street in Lancaster, Pa. using the network of the Underground Railroad. Following Stevens’ death, she prospered as an entrepreneurial woman, an accomplishment made all the more remarkable by the fact that she was a black woman in a largely segregated society. Smith’s story provides a unique opportunity to explore the lives of women, especially enterprising black women, in 19thcentury America. LancasterHistory engages

and educates the public about the people, places, and events that shaped Lancaster County within the broader context of the history of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the United States of America. As custodians of a complex past, LancasterHistory collects, preserves, exhibits, and makes accessible materials chronicling Lancaster County’s past as they seek to engage audiences in multilayered stories of that past.

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) announced $28.6 million in prestigious grant awards for new humanities-based projects throughout the country. LancasterHistory’s project to plan for the future development of the Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith historic site was one of three planning grants awarded in the NEH Historic Places category. LancasterHistory will receive $75,000 to help offset costs associated with an extensive interpretive and master planning process that will ensure the successful completion of a future museum and history center at the Stevens and Smith Site. “In the museum field, the support of the NEH is akin to the ‘Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval,’” said LancasterHistory Vice President Robin Sarratt. “Receiving such a highly competitive grant is a ringing endorsement of the work we’re doing. Beyond the financial support, for which we’re deeply grateful, this grant carries the added weight of being from the largest federal entity dedicated to supporting cultural institutions across the nation.” LancasterHistory has additional cause for celebration. The Lancaster-based High Foundation awarded LancasterHistory an additional $75,000 grant for the site planning effort. Funds from both the High Foundation and the NEH will be instrumental in bringing together a topnotch advisory council of scholars, museum professionals, educators, and consultants from throughout the country to lay the interpretive framework for the historic site. Additionally, the planning process will include a community advisory council that will engage in a participatory process of linking the historic site closely with the surrounding neighborhoods in Lancaster City’s Southeast. “We are delighted to see the seeds for this project planted,” says High Foundation

The Three Pillars To All Antiques Shows “What’s It Worth” Antiques Minute By Mike Ivankovich Successful antique shows don’t just happen. They require good timing and a lot of hard work. In my opinion, there are three “pillars” to any successful antiques show, and all are required for a show to succeed. Promoter It takes a good promotor for an antiques show to succeed. Most promoters are business people who need to make a fair profit. If they fail to make a profit, they’ll stop running antiques shows. They charge an exhibitors’ fee for any antiques dealer to set up at the show, and they will charge an admission fee for the general public to attend the show (this is often called “the gate”). From exhibitor fees and the gate, promotors must pay facility rental fees, marketing and advertising, staffing and labor, and other show expenses, while still hoping to make a profit. A large exhibitor base and strong gate can lead to a profitable show. If either softens, the promoter will make little or no money. The promoter can’t succeed without exhibitors and the gate. Exhibitors Exhibitors (i.e. antiques dealers) pay the promoter an exhibition fee to set up at the show, with the hope that their show sales will exceed their exhibition fee and show expenses. Exhibitors must pack and unpack, pay travel

and overnight expenses, and they have their own marketing and administrative expenses. And yes, they must also purchase the antiques and collectibles that they hope to sell. Exhibitors’ show sales must exceed all of their show expenses and cost of goods sold to have a successful show. If not, they lose money, and will most likely not exhibit at that show again. The Gate Show attendees pay a fee to enter a show based upon the size, quality and reputation of the show. Both the promoter and the exhibitors need a good gate to succeed. If customers fail to attend a show, or

people are attending most antiques shows and/or spending serious money at them. This means that fewer antiques dealers are paying to exhibit at shows. And with fewer exhibitors and a declining gate, an increasing number of promoters are closing their shows. It’s a sad, but real cycle, but hopefully we are nearing the turning point. Because many people, like myself, really enjoy going to a good antiques show.

41st Museum Mile Festival Set For June 11 Free Museum Admission And Outdoor Art Activities For Children Part Of Annual Collaboration Now celebrating its 41st year, the annual Museum Mile Festival will take place rain or shine on Tuesday evening, June 11, from 6 to 9 p.m. Over 1.5 million people have taken part in this annual celebration since its inception. Festival attendees can walk the one mile on Fifth Avenue between 82nd Street and 105th Street while visiting seven of New York City’s finest cultural institutions, which will be open free to the public throughout the evening. The Museum Mile Festival’s opening ceremony takes place at 5:45 p.m., at El Museo del Barrio, 1230 Fifth Ave. at 105th Street. Traditionally, the Commissioner of Cultural Affairs and other city and state dignitaries open the festival. The seven institutions participating in this successful collaboration are the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Neue Galerie New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum;

the Jewish Museum; Museum of the City of New York; and El Museo del Barrio. Fifth Avenue is closed to traffic and becomes New York City’s biggest block party. There is something for everyone at each of the venues. Special exhibitions and works from permanent collections are on view inside the museums’ galleries, with live music and art-making workshops taking place on Fifth Avenue at selected museums. Exhibitions on view at each museum will include the following: The El Museo del Barrio, in celebration of its 50th anniversary, will present “Culture and the People: El Museo del Barrio, 1969-2019,” a two-part exhibition featuring selections from the permanent collection and a timeline contextualizing the history of the institution with related archival materials. Featuring over 80 artists, the exhibition will reflect on the

institution’s activist origins and pioneering role as an organization dedicated to presenting and preserving Puerto Rican, Latinx, and Latin American art and culture.

The Museum of the City of New York, in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, a watershed moment in the modern LGBTQ rights movement, will present “Pride = Power!” This series of exhibitions and events invites New Yorkers and visitors from around the world to discover and celebrate LGBTQ history and culture. The Jewish Museum’s

“Leonard Cohen: A Crack in Everything” is the first exhibition devoted to the imagination and legacy of the influential singer/songwriter, poet, and global icon from Montreal and will feature large-scale, immersive contemporary artworks inspired by Leonard Cohen’s life, work, and legacy. The exhibition also includes a video projection showcasing Cohen’s own drawings and an innovative multimedia gallery where visitors can hear covers of Cohen’s songs by various musicians. Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum’s “Nature—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial,” will feature over 60 innovative projects that highlight the ways designers are collaborating with scientists, engineers, farmers, environmentalists, and nature itself to design a more harmonious and regenerative future.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum will present “Artistic License: Six Takes on the Guggenheim Collection,” a celebration of the institution’s extensive 20th-century holdings through the intervention of six contemporary artists: Paul Chan, Cai Guo-Qiang, Jenny Holzer, Julie Mehretu, Richard Prince, and Carrie Mae Weems. “Implicit Tensions: Mapplethorpe Now” honors the legacy of the critically acclaimed, yet controversial American artist Robert Mapplethorpe. At the Neue Galerie New York, “The Self-Portrait, from Schiele to Beckmann” examines works primarily from Austria and Germany made between 1900 and 1945. Approximately 70 self-portraits by more than 30 artists, both well-known figures and others who deserve greater recognition, are united in the presentation, which is comprised of loans from public and private collections worldwide.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s “Play It Loud: Instruments of Rock & Roll” explores one of the most influential artistic movements of the 20th century through more than 130 instruments that made the music possible. The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) is a cultural partner for the Museum Mile Festival. The LMCC empowers artists by providing them with networks, resources, and support to create vibrant, sustainable communities in Manhattan and beyond and also presents the 18th Annual River to River Festival of free arts and culture. About the Museum Mile Festival Established in 1978 to increase public awareness of its member institutions and promote public support of the arts, the Museum Mile Festival serves as a model for similar events across the country. For details on the festival’s offerings, readers may visit www.MuseumMileFestival.org.

A Look At Model Trains early trains. Certainly they were not as sophisticated as Many people are familiar today’s model, but they with the saying that “the dif- served their purpose. In Europe during the ference between men and boys is the cost of their toys.” That is probably a very true statement. I am a model train collector, and I admire other peoples’ train sets when I have the opportunity to see them. Believe me, some toy trains can be very expensive, and others are quite reasonable. However, how much a person spends on their model trains, and how elaborate they want it to be, will largely depend on, literally, how many bells and whistles they Victorian era, there were model trains not only for the want their toys to have. Scott Antique Markets Reopens In Washington Court House It was a rainy beginning for the show at the Fayette County Fairgrounds, but the weather brightened up, and so did the shopping at Scott Antique Markets in Washington Court House, Ohio, on April 26 and 27. An incredible array of furniture filled many booths at the market. “Wardrobes are gaining popularity,” according to Tim Zoda, a vendor in the Sales Arena building. Zoda had antique tables and chairs, dressers with ornate mirrors, a large trunk, and a wooden stacking filing cabinet made in New York that sold on day one. Another vendor, Jake Decker, had a 1940s hideaway bar, complete with a hanging shelf for wine glasses, numerous glassware

holders and plenty of shelf space for bottles. Toys were in abundance at the show. Disney pieces from the 1920s-’50s lined shelves in the Mahan building, including

a model set of the Seven Dwarfs and a Jack-in-the-box featuring Donald Duck inside. A pre-electric pinball machine on display in John Johnson’s booth didn’t last long before a

buyer scooped it up. The Bingo Planet pinball machine, which had a $465 price, was encased in wood with a glass top and was made in 1932. Vendors with china, glassware, antique silverware, and linens talked to customers wanting to spruce up their dining tables. Longaberger baskets were pored over by a repeat shopper picking out a piece for

his daughter’s collection. Numerous customers enjoyed strolling through the fairgrounds from building to building over the weekend looking for pieces to take home and enjoy. One such customer left the grounds with a matching grey pot and kettle set in excellent condition to add to his wife’s collection. A good amount of antique tools were seen sold

as well. The Fayette County Fairgrounds held something for everyone to enjoy. Scott Antique Markets will host two more shows at the fairgrounds this season on Friday and Saturday, June 28 and 29, and Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28. For further information, readers may visit www.scottantiquemarkets.com.

MAGAZINES mass produced. However, as real trains began losing their dominant transporting role to cars and airplanes, the model trains were losing popularity as well and slowly their appeal to children declined. Model trains were mainly for the adult collectors. They are still very much alive. The emphasis is often on trains for the adult modeler, as well as on the collector, but they still also for children too. With all the trains that have been produced there are plenty of opportunities for the collector to enjoy not only vintage trains from the past but new productions as well. For example, a Lionel Mickey Mouse circus train set from 1935 sold for nearly $10,000 at a 2014 auction. Not only were train collectors attracted to the set but Mickey Mouse collectors as well. trains were being devised, and from the late 1890s, they were available to the model train fan. In fact, the U.S. manufactures Ives and Lionel clashed before Lionel and American Flyer became the dominant U.S. manufacturers especially from the 1920s forward. The Marx Company also had a share of the market. The popularity of model trains was high in the 1920s and ’30s. There were now modelers magazines, which emphasized home construction and ways to improve your train layout no matter what gauge train you had. In the United States, Lionel train sets were given as gifts. Some of these packaged sets have now been passed down from one generation to another. They can be worth thousands of dollars if they are in good running condition and if the original box is still in good shape. Of course, companies such as Lionel emphasized that model train collecting was a family hobby, and that people of all ages can enjoy it. Model railroading was popular, especially with HO scale trains, although smaller gauges often were used in areas that did not have a lot of room. Production slowed during World War II, but surged in the ’50s, and model trains were

The President’s Special sets are expensive, and depending on condition, can cost upwards of $20,000 or more. Another American Flyer set, the Mayflower, is also rare. No matter what price point the collector wants to be in, model train collecting can be a very rewarding and enjoyable hobby.
