Pook & Pook Holds Three Exciting Sales Over Impressive Americana Weekend By Karl Pass

P

ook & Pook Inc., of Downingtown, Pa., held three sales over the course of three days on April 24, 25, and 27. The first was a multi-consignor Americana and Fine Art sale of 337 lots, which was 93 percent sold, totaling $768,930 (including buyer’s premiums). The second was the dedicated 535-lot sale of the J. Jefferson and Anne Weiler Miller collection. It was 99 percent sold and totaled $1,222,350. And finally, the third auction was an online-only decorative arts sale consisting of 857 lots with a 100 percent sellthrough rate totaling $175,214. The April 24 sale started with a wide range of paintings and also included sculpture and an array of American and European decorative arts. A fine oil-on-canvas by Pennsylvania impressionist Edward Willis Redfield (1869-1965) sold for $132,000 (est. $40,000$80,000) and will appear in Dr. Thomas A rare North Carolina redware dish attributed to Solomon Loy of Alamance County sold for $18,000 (est. $5,000-$10,000). It sold to a collector in Tennessee bidding by phone.

Several fine examples of Jacob Maentel’s work sold. This watercolor and gouache portrait of Ephraim Share, b. 1804, having descended directly through the family of the subject, was one of the best in the sale. It realized $40,800 (est. $8,000-$12,000). “I thought the Maentels all did well,” said Jamie Shearer of Pook & Pook.

I liked the in situ photos showing how the Millers lived with the things in their home. It was presented very well,” continued Shearer. A Jacob Maentel fulllength portrait This circa 1880 4-inch-tall pine rooster attributed to Wilhelm Schimmel, surviving in very good condition, sold for $12,000 (est. $4,000$8,000). The April 27 online-only sale was handled through the bidding platform Bidsquare and offered a wide variety of art and antiques. Pook & Pook has held several onlineonly sales and plans to have more in the future. The catalogs and prices realized for all three sales are available at www.pookandpook.com and also wwwBidsquare.com. had been made to commemorate the wedding of the future King Edward VII. Condition, however, is a huge determinate in what is valuable. I was so happy with the discovery of the aforementioned salt-glaze pitcher that I neglected to notice that it was missing a pewter lid. The small holes for the lid confirmed that the piece was incomplete. Thus my prize was not nearly as rare and desirable as I had hoped. So for all you Anglophile readers, go get your royal commemorative china and celebrate the centuries old tradition of the British royal family.

which huge amounts of commemorative china was produced was the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana in 1981. The wedding was long anticipated and captured the attention of people around the world. As a result, huge numbers of commemoratives were produced for sale. I recall being in Canada during that time and seeing shelves and shelves of Charles and Diana china being offered for sale. My advice for collecting royal china is to have fun with it but don’t assume that most of it will become hugely valuable. Again, most items were made in huge quantities. Similarly, royalty buffs don’t usually collect one item but go after many pieces. Thus, if you find one, you will usually see lots more! A knowledge of history is important to collecting royal commemoratives. Sometimes such knowledge can help you find a real treasure. A favorite piece in my collection was an English salt-glaze pitcher that I owned because of its date registry stamp on the bottom. I was able to determine that it

I recently heard a news story about the economic benefit to the British economy surrounding the birth of Princess Charlotte to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The boom came from the production of millions of royal commemoratives and souvenirs. This is not a new phenomenon, as the production of such pieces has always been a hallmark of every major event in British royal life. I used to collect royal commemoratives, as did my mother before me. When we moved West, that collection could not travel well, and so it went off to auction. I got very little for the items at the auction, which, frankly, did not surprise me. Why? First and foremost, while the pieces were historically fascinating, they also were made in huge quantities. Thus, none were particularly

rare. Second, I did not buy the great examples by Wedgwood or Royal Doulton, but instead settled for the commemoratives made by mass production. Royal commemorative china has been around for centuries, and people have collected it with the same fevered energy in the past as they do today. Thus, one can find pieces into the 18th-and 19th-centuries that reflect the public’s fascination with the British Royals. In the 20th century, royal mania hit highs with the proposed coronation of Edward VIII, aka David Duke of Windsor, whose story and love affair with Wallis Warfield Simpson caught the American public’s imagination. Go to eBay today, and you will see dozens and dozens of Edward VIII commemoratives listed. Although he abdicated before being crowned, the commemorative china makers were producing wares in anticipation of the event, which were then sold, particularly to Americans, in large quantities. Conference Center is the largest, most technologically advanced facility between Baltimore and Boston. After several meetings, Kohler knew this was the perfect new home for this long-running and important antiques event. “This has been a long and challenging journey to

arrive here,” said Kohler. “The past couple of years have certainly tested my tenacity, but I was resolute, despite the venue issues, to ensure for the dealers and antiques collectors that this jewel of a show would sustain and continue to thrive.” Over the past few years, Kohler faced challenges with scheduling, and the facility itself at the Atlantic City Convention Center, which had been its home for so many years. In 2014, she was thrilled to have finally found what she thought would be the new permanent home for the show, the Mark Etess Arena at the Trump Taj Mahal. “This was a fabulous

venue for us, so when I received the news in October that the ‘Taj’ would be closing, I was devastated. But, I knew, with timing not on my side, I had to secure an alternate location for the spring 2015 show. So I made the decision to go back to the Convention Center even though the dates available were a bit later than I would have liked. I was determined to make it work,” said Kohler. The later April dates proved to be a problem for many of the dealers in the show. Scheduling conflicts with other events they had already booked would have

The Fall Antique Show held last October by the Historic Burlington Antique and Art Emporium was deemed so successful that the Burlington Emporium has decided to hold a Spring Antique Show on Sunday, May 31. Most of the shop’s 85 dealers will be present, and there will be over 20 dealers set up in front of the emporium and the adjacent parking lot located at 424 High St., Burlington City, N.J. The show will be free to the public, and selling will commence at 11 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. The unique emporium building was built by Edward Supper between 1917 and 1924 for the Nash dealership to repair and maintain automobiles. Today, the building is home to 65-plus antique dealers selling items from the early 1800s to the collectibles of today. The emporium also boasts a 40-foot courtyard. Every spring, the emporium dealers fill this space with gardens

made this event less than the caliber it has been. “I had to make one of the most difficult decisions in my career, to cancel the April 2015 show, but I didn’t have a choice. I knew that I had to keep my eye on the big picture for my dealers, the show and the industry overall. In my heart, I knew this was the right decision and that this short-term inconvenience would result in long-term benefits, said Kohler. “The antiques industry, and shows in particular, have faced challenges over the past several years. I know how frustrating this is for attendees and dealers to have events switched, cancelled; it can easily undermine the faith and confidence in a promoter. Quite honestly, there are probably promoters in the country who would have ‘thrown in the towel,’ but that is not who I am or what JMK Shows is about. The antiques industry is in my blood; it’s a passion for me, and event promotion is what I do, said Kohler. The Atlantic City Antiques Show has two upcoming events scheduled at the Waterfront Conference Center at Harrah’s. The first will be the fall 2015 event to be held Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 21 and 22, at the height of the fall antiquing season. The spring show is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, March 12 and 13, 2016. “With the movement of the November Pier Show to an earlier date, it gave us one of the biggest antique shopping weekends of the year to debut our fall event. And with the uncertainty surrounding the March Pier Show, dealers are already clamoring to sign on

for both shows. We’re home at last! Back to two shows, fall and spring, and in the most spectacular location possible, said Kohler. Allison Kohler and JMK Shows would like to express their sincere apologies to everyone that has been affected by this year’s turn of events. “It’s deeply affected all of us, but I look forward to opening the doors on Nov. 21 to a most amazing event at our new home. For more information, call Allison Kohler at JMK Shows and Events at 973927-2794 or 973-224-2797 or visit www.jmkshows.com.

that he gave her a kind of love that she had never experienced before. Her love for Bartoli was passionate, carnal, tender and maternal.” About José Bartoli, whom Herrera interviewed for her biography on Kahlo, she states, “Bartoli never lost his love for Frida. If you asked him about her, he would speak with great reverence, but also with restraint. All his life he treasured the little objects she gave him as tokens of her love and he kept all her letters.” Herrera continues, “Kahlo sometimes worries that Bartoli would find her letters to be childish, corny, and stupid. But, she tells him, love letters are never intelligent or stupid. Her letters are her ‘truth.’ She asks him to receive them ‘as if a little girl passing in the street gave you a flower without knowing why.’” The price includes the buyer’s premium. including her 1946 “Tree of Hope.” They also poignantly refer to an unknown possible pregnancy, her post-surgery relationship with her husband, personal and professional struggles, and her unwavering love for Bartoli. In a letter from October 1946, Kahlo states, “My Bartoli…I don’t know how to write love letters. But I wanted to tell you that my whole being opened for you. Since I fell in love with you everything is transformed and is full of beauty…love is like an aroma, like a current, like rain. You know, my sky, you rain on me and I, like the earth, receive you.” Acclaimed Frida Kahlo biographer Hayden Herrera has recently written an essay profiling these letters. The letters offer very personal revelations about Kahlo’s relationship with Rivera. Herrera states, “Although Kahlo was deeply attached to Rivera, these letters suggest that she would have left him in order to live with Bartoli. She told Bartoli

A group of love letters written by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo sold for $137,000 at Doyle New York on April 15. The 25 letters were written by Frida Kahlo to Jose Bartoli, a Catalán émigré artist whom she met in New York. Many of the letters include keepsakes inserted by Kahlo, among them drawings, photographs, pressed flowers and other mementos. The successful bidder was a private collector in New York, who is also an artist and admirer of Kahlo. These unpublished letters, dating from 1946 through 1949 and comprising more than 100 pages in Spanish, were secreted away and cherished by Bartoli until his death in 1995. They remained in the possession of Bartoli’s family, who made the decision to offer the letters at auction 20 years after his death. Frida Kahlo met José Bartoli in New York while she was recuperating from spinal surgery stemming from a bus accident in her youth. Their love affair continued after Kahlo returned to Mexico to her beloved home, La Casa Azul, and her husband, artist Diego Rivera. The clandestine correspondence lasted for three years, aided by friends and Kahlo’s sister, Cristina, who had introduced the pair. The letters provide new and unique insights into the life and career of one of the 20th century’s most important artists. Poetically composed with a touch of Kahlo’s characteristic surrealism, the letters offered illuminating information about some of her best-known paintings,

Ohio, banker and collector Andrew Emerine. The African-American-themed bank later passed to another legendary collector, Mosler Safe Company president and CEO Edwin H. Mosler Jr. After Mosler, the bank’s next owner, was the aforementioned Stanley P. Sax, whose collection was auctioned by Bertoia’s in 1998. Max Berry, who purchased it at the Sax auction, always regarded the bank as one of the greatest treasures in his collection. A well-known New York collector bidding from the floor paid $210,000 (estimate $125,000$175,000) to own a Santa-themed Zig-Zag bank, a possibly unique survivor made of cast iron, tin and cloth. “The Zig-Zag generated more interest and bids than any other item in the sale,” said Bertoia. “You could have heard a pin drop during the auctioning of all of the top three banks. People were very respectful of the amounts of money being spent for them.” Yet another collector from New York prevailed on a Charles A. Bailey lead bank,

Photographic items drew interest, such as an ambrotype photograph of Elisa Greenwell, resident of Philadelphia, runaway from the residence of William Edelen of Leonardtown, Md., in 1859, taken in the 1860s, selling for $37,500; M.H. The two top lots in Swann Galleries’ March 26 auction of Printed and Manuscript African Americana demonstrate the diversity of material in the sale. A nearly complete manuscript copy of the Qur’an, circa 1600 to 1700, from the Yattara family, one of Timbuktu’s founding families, brought $50,000, as did a small but exceptional archive of ragtime-related material, including manuscripts related to Scott Joplin, 1900-10s. An autograph letter signed by Frederick Douglass attesting to the character of Harriet Tubman, addressed to the treasurer of the Rochester Ladies Anti-Slavery Society, October 1864, brought $40,000, while a long and heartbreaking 1862 letter describing items needed by contrabands in Kansas, addressed to the Ladies’ Contraband Aid Association of Rochester, sold for $8,125. More scarce Douglass material included “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave,” written by himself, bound by Douglass, Rochester, 1848, $20,000, and “The North Star,” Volume I, No. XIV, Rochester, March 1848, $25,000.
