The button show will be held in the church’s separate education building. Admission will be $3 per adult. Any child 12 years or younger will enter free of charge. To encourage a lifelong love of political history and collecting, each child will receive assorted buttons, free of charge, to start his or her own personal collection. Free appraisals will be offered for all political items brought in by members of the public. Members of the public may also bring items for auction, with a commission rate of 10 percent of the overall sale. Breakfast and lunch, a wide selection of baked goods, and bottomless cups of hot coffee and tea will be offered for sale (with net proceeds from food sales to benefit the church’s programs). For the 12th year in a row, East Coast collectors of political buttons, badges, ribbons and related ephemera will meet in Titusville, N.J., on Saturday, May 16, to sell, trade and display memorabilia from the most recent campaigns, as well as from political campaigns throughout the centuries. This 12th annual gathering of political collectors is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Titusville United Methodist Church. Attendees from multiple states can expect to see a wide variety of political items, ranging from 2016 presidential campaign buttons promoting Chris Christie, Hillary Clinton and Rand Paul as candidates to items from such former presidents as Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. This gathering will be hosted by the local chapter of the American Political Items Collectors (APIC) national nonprofit hobbyist association, which is dedicated to preserving political history. “Our meetings offer a great opportunity for young and old alike to see and learn about real artifacts used by candidates throughout our nation’s many elections,” said Tony Lee, a Titusville resident and president of APIC’s Big Apple Chapter. “Most political items don’t survive the elections in which they were used, so to see an

Heritage Auctions Expands In New York City Additional Space At 455 Park Avenue Will Provide More Room For Public Displays Heritage Auctions (www.HA.com) again is expanding its New York City offices at 445 Park Ave. (at 57th St.). The addition of more office space on the building’s 15th floor will free up street-level floor space to expand public displays of historic collectibles from Heritage’s 39 different auction categories, including comic books and comic art, sports memorabilia, rare coins and paper money, entertainment and music memorabilia, books and manuscripts, wine, luxury handbags and fine and decorative art. “We opened our Manhattan gallery and offices in September 2010 and increased our space by 25 percent two years later. We’ve now signed a lease to expand our office space on the 15th floor by 50 percent. This brings the total square footage at our Park Avenue location to 10,232,” said Heritage Auctions president Greg Rohan. “To give you an idea of Heritage’s dedication to the New York market and to this office, the per-squarefoot rent on the new space is

Thousands of people pass by each day and enjoy eyecatching displays of selections from upcoming auctions,” said Kathleen Guzman, Heritage’s New York managing director. “After we move some of our ground floor offices to the new space on the 15th floor, we’ll significantly expand our lobby area exhibit space for collectors and the public to see even more displays of rare and historic collectibles and art,” explained Guzman. Dallas, Texas-based Heritage opened its New York City gallery and a Beverly Hills, Calif., gallery and salesroom five years ago at a time when many major auction firms were contracting during the economic recession. known for large, beautiful, luscious landscapes, and this was a still life. It was very far from his subject range, so far, in fact, that when the painting was eventually sold, it brought one-tenth of what his work would normally do. The lesson in antiquing, which I can never say often enough, is to study, research and study some more. Also, learn to be objective in your evaluation of things. It’s so easy to get excited about seeing something by a known artist, but if the work is atypical, then stop and pause. Even if the price seems to be a bargain, it may always be a bargain because it does not represent the best work of the artist.

concrete mixer and Barber Greene bucket loader. Following right along will be a Smith-Miller Silver Streak truck, Keystone express truck and several Buddy ‘L’ trucks: a Sit N Ride, Fast Freight and Express Line model. Also from the famed Moline, Ill., manufacturer Buddy ‘L’ comes a Model T flivver coupe. In the cast-iron section, there are horse-drawn carriages, tractors, a fire pumper and a sub-collection of toy cannons. Five arcade vehicles include a touring car, a Model A coupe, cars No. 116 and No. 113, a Fordson tractor and a contractor’s dump wagon. Dieterly’s Hubley

Indian police motorcycle with sidecar retains both the driver and passenger figures and teams up nicely with another consignor’s Indian bike in red with driver figure intact. Another nice addition is the Kilgore cast-iron Travel Air Mystery Plane. The railway station will be operating full steam at Stephenson’s, as a broad array of primarily American trains will be presented, from both Dieterly’s and other advanced collections. Highlights include two Ives train sets in original boxes, a set of cast-iron trains and many examples by Lionel, such as an Electric Train Set No. 8 (boxed) and a Rapid Transit motor and dummy. Among the later productions are trains by Lionel, Williams, K-Line and Rail King, many of them in their original boxes. There will be several coveted ride-on trains in the sale, led by a Buddy ‘L’ Outdoor Railroad engine, caboose and

The annual event was held at the Holiday Inn and Suites in Mesa, Ariz., outside of Phoenix, by Allard Auctions Inc., based in St. Ignatius, Mont. This year’s two-day event, held March 7 and 8, featured more than 900 lots of Native American and Western artifacts, art and related collectibles. Included were Anasazi pottery, Zuni bolo ties and concho belts, a collection of Katsina dolls, baskets (from California, the Southwest and the Northwest Coast), pottery, beadwork and jewelry, Navajo rugs, original art, bronzes and prehistoric items. The Sioux dentalium and trade cloth dress (with yoke) was in very good condition. It was a rare old 12-row, fully covered and removable dentalium shell yoke with canvas, having the original selvage trade cloth dress with ribbon and metallic sequin accents. A few of the dentalium shells were missing, not unusual considering its age. Larger dentalium shells were often used as money by the Native

Bidders also pushed the sale price of an 11-by-14-inch lobby card from the film to $40,630, making it the most valuable example of its kind from the movie. A prehistoric Anasazi pottery jar, a black-on-white water olla in as-found condition (in Tularosa, a village in Otero County, N.M.), 11.75inches tall, with some cracks but in remarkable condition for its age, sold for $2,185. A traditional hand-carved and painted Hopi cottonwood root “White Ogre” kachina doll from the Home Dance ceremony, 15-inches tall, brought $978. Baskets that fared better than expected included a Chemehuevi basket from the early 1900s, an outstanding oval-shaped tray with arrow and diamond figures. Estimated to bring $400$800, the basket went for $1,840. And a Papago (a tribe from south of Phoenix, known for their crude stitch baskets) large cylindrical storage basket, circa 1970s, (est. $200-$400) sold for $748. Other lots that exceeded expectations included a Navajo miniature, all-silver canteen from the 1960s or ’70s, with the edges and stopper set with square-cut turquoise stones. Estimated at $300-$600, the canteen brought $1,265. Also, a mid1900s hand-wrought, all-silver Navajo salt dish (or container) with matching spoon, expected to sell for $150$300, sold for $920.

This outstanding Shoshone woman’s sinew sewn flat and lazy stitch beaded white buckskin outfit, circa 1960s, small/medium, sold for $5,463.

Violette de Mazia Foundation And Barnes Foundation To Unify Their Educational Programs At The Barnes Affiliation Creates $8 Million Educational Endowment At The Barnes Foundation Bogutz. “Uniting our programs and housing them at the Barnes will expand their reach and secure their future as well as ensure permanent recognition for the important role Violette de Mazia played in education at the Barnes Foundation,” he said. The Barnes-de Mazia courses provide extraordinary access to the masterpieces in the Barnes Foundation. Students study art and aesthetics in rigorous programs based on the teachings of Albert C. Barnes, Violette de Mazia, and John Dewey, which encourage students to read art as an artist does and to study its formal elements. This method of teaching students the language of art makes art accessible wherever it is encountered. “The Barnes Foundation and the Violette de Mazia Foundation share a commitment to art appreciation and aesthetics, as well as to maintaining structured, multi-year education programs based on those methods jointly developed by Albert C. Barnes, Violette de Mazia and John Dewey,” said Neubauer. “The unification of the education programs of the Barnes Foundation and the Violette de Mazia Foundation will lead to an expansion of educational programming at the Barnes, and help to advance its mission through robust programming and outreach.” Barnes-de Mazia courses will begin in the autumn of 2015.

About the Barnes Foundation The Barnes Foundation (www.barnesfoundation.org) was established by Albert C. Barnes in 1922 to “promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts and horticulture.” The Barnes holds one of the finest collections of PostImpressionist and Early Modern paintings, Old Master paintings, important examples of African sculpture, Native American ceramics, jewelry, textiles, antiquities from the Mediterranean region and Asia, and Pennsylvania German decorative arts, among other things. The Barnes Foundation’s Art and Aesthetics programs engage diverse audiences. These programs, held at the Philadelphia campus, online, and in Philadelphia communities, advance the mission through progressive, experimental, and interdisciplinary teaching and learning.

Violette de Mazia came to Philadelphia in 1924 to teach French at Miss Sayward’s School, and in 1925 she began to tutor Dr. Barnes and executives at the A.C. Barnes Company in French, while at the same time enrolling in the Barnes courses in art appreciation and philosophy. Over the years, she collaborated on many projects and publications with Dr. Barnes and contributed significantly to the Barnes courses and the foundation’s philosophy of education. In 1950, Ms. de Mazia became Director of Education at the Barnes Foundation and served in that capacity until her retirement in 1987. Upon her death in 1988, the Violette de Mazia Trust was formed to support and perpetuate the educational program to which she had devoted so much of her life. The Violette de Mazia Trust became the Violette de Mazia Foundation in 2005.

About the Violette de Mazia Foundation The Violette de Mazia Foundation is an arts education institution that delivers and sponsors programs and activities that teach an objective approach to art appreciation and encourages students to use their senses to see the qualities that make a painting a work of art, rather than relying on written descriptions. The foundation is based on the belief that education is a lifelong activity of growth, development, and change; that life and art are inextricably linked; and that enriching this aspect of our lives is a prerequisite to developing an engaged society. Since its establishment in 2005, the Violette de Mazia Foundation has enrolled and reached out to students from all walks of life: from academics to senior citizens, young students, prison inmates, wounded veterans and individuals with special needs.

Before long, many more problematic aspects were discovered through further examinations, and the fraudster eventually confessed. This example of a masterfully-crafted forgery not only alerts us to such possibilities, but also gives us some authentication clues. When it comes to more contemporary hardcover books, buyers need to watch out for things like false aging. A couple of ways fraudsters have tried to make books appear to be rare or first editions is by carefully removing the page with publication and/or edition dates, which didn’t always appear on older books; they have also created authentic-looking inscriptions on the flyleaf with a date that supports the book’s purported age, even using pen types and writing styles of the period. (However, a few scammers were not so clever and the inscriptions were recognized as contemporary forgeries because a ballpoint pen was used on a pre-ballpoint era book.) Hardcovers have been made to look dusty by rubbing cornstarch into the cover or made to look worn with sandpaper. Look for aging that “makes sense” for its type and where it was supposedly kept. For example, if the seller claims the book was a former library copy, you’d

expect to see more signs of shelf wear versus a book that was cared for in a private collection. Another thing to watch for is incorrect typography or font. Many times the original font is used on later editions, but sometimes it’s changed to a more modern font. On some early editions, letters may actually be slightly impressed into the paper, while on modern editions they’d be flat. Paper is another giveaway, it’s changed many times through the decades, and a more contemporary paper would tell you that you’re not looking at an old first edition. Of course, paper can be aged using many different techniques, the most common being teabags. It’s not unknown for the pages of a later edition to be stained to mimic natural browning or even foxing (brown spots). Some books have even been soaked in water and then oven-dried if their provenance includes a shipwreck or flooding. It goes without saying that any author’s original signature inside a book should be authenticated and not assumed to be real. There are plenty of signature forgeries. Also, many people have been surprised to learn that the authors’ signatures found inside a number of old editions are actually printed along with the book and are not original signatures. This was certainly not meant to deceive, and it may seem like

watercolor illustrations purportedly done by Galileo himself (where other volumes had engravings), but also bore a Latin inscription that translates to “I, Galileo Galilei, made this.” However, the astute GSU professor and historian discovered several discrepancies: the library stamp didn’t match irrefutably legitimate stamps from the same Italian library of that time period but did match several dubious stamps; the library had no record of this particular vol-

basic knowledge to anyone who collects or sells old books, but I can’t tell you how many people have purchased books with printed signatures because they were convinced the book was signed by a famous author. One final note of interest. There is a thriving Chinese bootleg industry of fake Harry Potter books (others have been written in Russia and Canada; by the time of this publication, there may be even more). I’m not talking about unauthorized copies of J.K. Rowling’s work; these are true fakes. Rowling never wrote any of these books; they’re being written by Chinese authors and have titles like “Harry Potter and the Waterproof Pearl,” “Harry Potter and the Golden Armor,” and “Harry Potter and the Half-Blooded Relative Prince.” There are at least a dozen different titles in this fraudulent industry, some of which use the plot and text of the original book and just change the perspective to first person. Arguably one of the most brazen in this line is “Harry Potter and the Leopard Walk-Up-To Dragon,” where scenes from Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” are copied and Rowling’s characters’ names and places are substituted. Easy watch word: if it isn’t by Rowling, it isn’t

There’s no question that books originally outfitted with book jackets, or dust jackets, resell for a significantly higher price if they still have their jackets than those that have lost their “outerwear.” The difference in price can range in the thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the book. And, of course, the better the condition of the jacket, the higher the value. With money-making potential like that, it’s not hard to see why fraudsters would want to create book jackets to replace those that have been either lost or badly damaged over the years. Fortunately there are things you can check for to protect yourself from falling for this scam. Like with many other fakes and counterfeits, the process for creating reproduction book jackets gets better all the time, but there are enough counterfeits out there with clues that betray their identity. When a copy is made of an existing book jacket by using a copy machine, the flaws in the original jacket are copied onto the paper. Look closely at the edges of the book jacket for copies of rips, tears, and rough areas that were copied from the original jacket. Sometimes a scammer will trim those edges off, so if the jacket is smaller than it should be, either damage has been removed from an original cover or it’s a copy. Creases that form near the spine where the book is constantly opened can also appear on reproductions as photocopied lines, or they may be missing altogether. Since some people remove dust jackets before reading books to better preserve them, a missing spine crease alone is not a definitive answer. Older book jackets made before the days of ink jet printing (mid-1970s) were lithographed, so look for the telltale dots that ink jets create on jackets that should be lithographed (although lithographed covers may also have small dot patterns, they are different from ink jet dots). Also consider the condition of the jacket paper in comparison to the age of the book. It would be extremely rare to find a vintage book jacket in completely unused condition, so approach such a piece with caution and check it out thoroughly. What about books themselves? Rare old books are prime targets for fraudsters. Some can carry such a high value that it’s worth a scammer’s time to give a contemporary copy of a rare or antiquarian volume that “old book ambiance.” If a book has an old book smell coupled with an appearance of age, it creates its own hype and has, to an important degree, convinced the buyer’s mind that this is an authentic volume. In 2012, a Georgia State University professor of history discovered evidence that a supposed 1610 edition of Galileo’s “Sidereus Nuncius,” whose authentication by various experts several years earlier put its value at over $10 million, was actually a forgery. The volume was considered extremely rare and valuable because it not only had hand-painted

The sale, scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, will feature more than 170 firearm lots, other militaria, sporting art, decoys, hunting trophies, and Native American and Western art.
