The Dentzel rooster is considered to be among the rarest of carousel figures. Written documentation indicates that between four and six are known to exist. Carved by the Dentzel Company in Philadelphia circa 1895, they are thought to be among the earliest of the Dentzel operation. The particular rooster being sold at William Bunch Auctions and Appraisals hails from a fire company in Orange, Va. It was purchased in 1977 by Leon Perelman, who offered it to the city of Philadelphia. When the city declined, the original carousel was broken up, and Perelman kept only the rooster and one other figure until his death. This is the first time in roughly 25 years a Dentzel rooster has come to auction. A Dentzel rooster was sold at Sotheby’s in 1989 setting a world auction record at the time selling for $148,000. The second, sold in 1991, realized $145,000. Bunch’s original Dentzel rooster will be a feature item on day two of its Monday and Tuesday, April 25 and 26, catalog sale. Bidding will be

The Harbingers Of Spring Rock Island’s Regional Auction Sets New Marks Rock Island Auction Company’s (RIAC) Regional Firearms auction held Feb. 25 through 28 was the largest event to date for the company. With 9,000+ firearms and over 4,400 lots, they made it a four day sale. By the end, Rock Island had a new record for participation with nearly 22,000 sealed bids. The bids were only those received through the RIAC website. The number of lots and the total gross for a regional auction were also records. The total came out to 7.3 million. Winchesters, Colts, and Smith & Wessons were scooped up day one. By mid-day the excitement had not abated, with jump bids being hollered out in the auction, even for lots that typically do not enjoy such raucous enthusiasm. Several class III machine guns listed as “unserviceable” outperformed their estimates in dramatic fashion. Lot 547 housed a Steyr Schwartzlose Model 07/12 mounted on its tripod, with a $5,000 estimate sold for $14,950. Likewise, lot 546 was a DEWAT German MP3008 submachine gun, one of the “last ditch” weapons of the Third Reich, that retreated from its $4,000

numerous nations drew dozens of bids, never more clearly than in Lot 2,640, which contained SVT-38 and SVT-40 semi-automatic Soviet rifles. This remarkable pair drew 70 bids before the auction even started. They brought $4,600. A high number of Winchesters and

pre-Winchesters performed well on the third day, but there were plenty of other surprises to keep bidders guessing. One surprise was a framed UMC “bullet board” in Lot 4,007 that surpassed its $2,500 estimate en route to its $6,900 payday. Russian Model in Lot 4,595 outshone its $1,700 estimate to sell for $5,750. Day four was a day for the diehards. It had been a long weekend already, but dedicated collectors had stuck around for a chance at the variety available on the final day. Their perseverance was well-rewarded several times, as seen in Lot 6,134 with its two Civil war revolvers that whooped a $1,000 estimate to realize $5,750. Lot 6,822 was arguably the smallest of all lots with its scarce miniature flintlock pistol made by miniature master Stanley Blashak. Estimated at $850, its winning price was far from diminutive at $5,175. German handguns also got in on the act. Lot 6,287 were two scarce semi-autos estimated at $1,200 and realized $4,025. estimate before achieving $12,650. Civil War items were hotly contested on day two. Guns embellished in every way imaginable brought premium prices. Rare Henry and Winchester rifles were offered frequently in this sale. President Kevin Hogan began reminding those in attendance, “Don’t be fooled by the availability of these guns at this auction. We might get one or two of these a year, and right now we’re making something rare appear very available,” said Hogan. Colt revolvers were strong contenders on the day with Lot 2,290s Model 1871-1872 Open Top with an eagle carved grip that made quick work of its $1,500 estimate by bringing $5,750, while the tried and true, antique Single Action

all these sets. It is even worse on video game collecting sites with some speculators accusing Nintendo of unfair business practices all for re-releasing a popular video game that was supposed to be out of print. Never mind the countless amount of resellers who were adversely affected when Nintendo announced it would ramp up production of its popular Amiibo figurines to help meet demand. Did these same speculators buy the readily available stock before realizing that Nintendo would just

continue to make more? And make no mistake that is exactly what happened with more and more being hoarded and sitting in unopened condition no less. This all begs the question, what is wrong with a little bit of speculation? Given the greater financial risks and opportunity costs associated with these items in question, I would say that there is a lot wrong with speculation today, but make no mistake as I’ll answer that question and more in my next article. Until that time, thanks for reading.

attention the media has given to so-called “Lego investing” (just do an Internet search for an eye opening expose on the phenomenon) it is not uncommon to find potential resellers spending tens of thousands of dollars on product with all too proud amateur photos of their stash close at hand to serve as proof (just check out www.brickpicker.com and browse the online forums). Many of these would-be speculators join one of the many up and coming “investing” sites geared towards Lego or even Nintendo products. I have nothing against these sites as at the very least they provide an insightful look at just how much product is being bought and sitting in unopened condition. Ironically, this alone should give most would-be speculators pause, but they respond to most of this criticism by telling their critics that they need to go to a Lego brand store and see all the kids buying Lego. As if these same kid’s parents weren’t readily buying Beanie Babies in this same manner … and we all know how that turned out! Even more ironic is when a Lego set is retired and it fails to generate the type of returns on the secondary market that speculators have come to expect, not too many of these resellers begin to wonder if they have started to cannibalize the secondary Lego collector’s market through the hoarding of

different from other items being hoarded from the past, but take a look at the price. The cheapest Lego set has a price of about $12.99 and these are not the sets that speculators are hoarding. Even the $12.99 Nintendo Amiibo figurines that are being sold as quickly as they can be made are not the real issue. No, that award goes to the $59.99 Nintendo Wii U games and the $200-$400 Lego sets that speculators have now decided to invest in. The cost of speculation has risen exponentially as we are no longer talking about two-dollar comic books or six-dollar Beanie Babies. Speculation now has real consequences for those who undertake such a risk. After all, how many Beanie Babies can one buy for each $200 Lego set? It is no wonder that modern day speculators are risking their own retirements and financial futures on the objects they hoard and judging by recent questionable headlines on everything from “Lego investing” to the “Amiibo frenzy,” the media is nothing but supportive. My fiercest critics (and there are many) will no doubt criticize this article claiming that very few speculators are buying bulk quantities of mass produced toys and collectibles that cost hundreds of dollars in lieu of investing for their retirement, but online collecting forums tell a much different story. Thanks to all the

S923092

I am often asked on online collecting forums what issues facing the collectibles trade I am most concerned about in this day and age. In my humble opinion, one of the most pressing issues affecting this trade is speculation. To be fair, speculation has been an important part of the antiques and collectibles trade since its conception and a necessary evil as well. Long before the Beanie Baby came into existence both collectors and dealers were busy hoarding such items like advertising premiums, toys, comic books, and almost anything else that had a large following of likeminded collectors. Speculation is nothing new to the trade and there have even been times when speculators have appeared to be almost right. Just ask anyone who bought and hoarded comic books in the early to late 1970s with dreams of striking it rich. Some of those books hoarded en masse and in near mint condition that sold for 12 to 50 cents back then are now selling for thousands of dollars and their values are still rising. When I sold off part of my vintage comic book collection last year a lot of my key books from the 1970s (known as the “bronze age” in comic collecting lore) were bought from speculators. Today, I sure hope those same speculators were smart enough to hold on to those books and are now selling! An Amazing Spider-Man 129 (featuring the first appearance of the Punisher) published in 1974 with a 20 cent cover price for $1,600? Check. A copy of Giant Size X-Men 1 hoarded en masse and published in 1975 for $1,700? Check. Yes, the comic book speculators of the 1970s have appeared to have won the battle even after all other opportunity costs and inflation are taken into account. I know several older comic book collectors who made quite a bit of money because they bought and hoarded a lot of comic books from this era. Some of these collectors are enjoying their retirement from the money they made. Unfortunately, most speculators are not nearly as lucky. In

fact, I would venture to say almost all the speculators who choose to enter the collectibles trade post 2000 will eventually fail. Most don’t even break even. Just ask all those so called investors of Beanie Babies. Or how about all those comic book speculators who came into the market in 1989? You can count the amount of comic books published in the 1990s on both your hands that have any significant value over their original cover price. This all begs the question as to why then do I consider the subject of speculation to be one of the greatest threats to the modern day collectibles trade? The answer comes down to simple economics. The speculators of comic books in the 1970s were only paying at most 20 to 50 cents per comic book and were most certainly not going into debt to acquire their chosen objects of desire. Even in the early 1990s comic book speculators were only paying about one to two dollars per issue! That being said, one could argue that Beanie Baby collectors had it subsequently worse having to pay a whole six dollars for each Beanie Baby minted. Fast forward to today and the two most popular products that speculators love to hoard are licensed Lego sets (mostly from the Star Wars franchise) and Nintendo related toys and video games. On the surface this may not seem much

Antiques & Auction News — April 15, 2016 - - 5

After a long winter, April seems like an appropriate month to welcome back the winged friends who visit gardens, yards, and parks not only birds, but bugs and butterflies as well. All this month, the special display at the Haddon Heights Antiques Center will focus on those creatures and on gardens, too. Customers will find vintage ceramic birds, butterflies and dragonflies on costume jewelry, hummingbirds, bees, old garden implements, and an array of antiques with a floral motif. Spring is a great time to go antiquing, and the Haddon Heights Antiques

Center, still going strong after over 20 years, has much to offer both the serious collector and the casual shopper looking for a unique decorator piece. The shop’s generous discount policy makes almost everything amazingly affordable. It is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Fridays. The Haddon Heights Antiques Center is located just off the White Horse Pike and I-295 on Clements Bridge Road where Barrington and Haddon Heights meet at the railroad tracks. Rare Asian Offerings Soared At Clars Auction

Bidding on “Mallards on the River” by Jasper Francis Cropsey (American, 1823-1900) opened at $20,000 but quickly escalated to a final sale price of $44,625.

which brought $5,950. And finally in jewelry and timepieces, sapphires and diamonds reigned supreme. Two rings took top spot in this category. The first was a sapphire, diamond and platinum ring sporting a center shield cut

$5,355. A complete list of prices realized from this two-day sale is available at www.Clars.com. Clars Auction Gallery is based in Oakland, Calif. To learn more, email info@clars.com.

TWO TOY TRAIN AUCTIONS

This George III double fusee bracket clock by Ellicot, London, was offered for $4,000 to $6,000. It grabbed the attention of serious collectors, and spirited bidding drove the bidding well past estimate, finally chiming in at $35,700. back to America, by Will Sparks (1862-1937), his oilon-canvas titled “Palace of Fine Arts (San Francisco, Calif.)” sold for $14,280. Solid prices and some unexpected surprises fueled the excitement of the Decorative Art and Furnishings session. Topping this category was a George III double fusee bracket clock by Ellicot, London. Executed in the Chinoiserie taste, this clock was offered for $4,000 to $6,000. It grabbed the attention of serious collectors, and spirited bidding drove the bidding well past estimate, finally chiming in at $35,700. A number of highly desirable offerings came from the Birmingham Museum of Art. Among these was a late 19th-century Louis XV-style Chinese porcelain presse papiers that was expected to achieve $400$600 but quickly soared past to sell for $5,562. Also achieving well over estimate was an exquisite Continental cut crystal hanging candelabra that realized $8,925. Rounding out the highlights from the museum was a circa 1900 Mahal carpet, West Persia, that realized $6,454. The Modern furniture offerings attracted competitive bidding.
